Used Apple Studio Display, Possibly Ruined

Hello all,
I purchased a used Apple Studio Display a few days ago and thought nothing of it at the time (I was picking up some used Macs for friends, and it was an afterthought). I figured, what the h*ll.
So anyway, I finally hooked it up, and was very impressed with the color calibration and overall usefulness of the monitor. The problem was it was very dirty and covered with scratches.
So, not knowing any better, I proceeded to use some glass cleaner on it, and this got a lot of black residue off the screen, which made things look noticeably cleaner. The bad news was that this was a lot of work, and I was looking for a more "quick and dirty" (poor choice of words, I suppose) method of getting it cleaned up. So I pulled out the "Goo Gone," a commercial product that smells a bit like oranges but which also has some petroleum distillates in it.
Anyway, long story short: Although the window cleaner and the craptastic miracle cleaner did a bang-up job insofar as the removal of the black matter, there are a few areas of the screen where I was a little too vigorous and have buffed the shine away, leaving a blurred image underneath. Who knew that the screen had a protective plastic coating? Not me, I suppose.
So I've googled around for some kits to repair the mistake I have made, and I'm coming up empty. I see multitudinous products for cleaning the monitor, and of course I wish I had found them before I endeavored to clean this monitor (it was disgusting, I tell you! Even with the blurring, it's still an improvement!). I still can't find a product to make this puppy shine like it's supposed to.
There remain a few noticeable scratches on the monitor, and of course I would like to buff those out if possible, but most importantly, I'd like to be able to get back the clarity I thought I was heading for (before I cleaned a little too hard!).
Responses chiding me for my overzealous cleaning behavior are discouraged, as I am primarily interested in climbing out of the hole I'm in, not in getting shoved further down it.
Thanks in advance,
Art

Well, I'm going to go ahead and answer my own question.
I attempted to take apart the monitor to take out the smudged glare screen. I was unsuccessful; it's glued directly to the glass in such a way that its removal would have made things much worse.
When I put it all back together, the monitor no longer worked!
Oh well, easy come, easy go.

  • My 11 year old Apple studio display died. what is best connection with new monitor

The lCD light finally quit after 12 years. So I bought a very cheap acer /led widescreenS200HQL 19 inch as a cheap quick replacement for my monitor on my  quicksilver G4 933. Question is it is connected to the second display port VGA... Is it worth buying a connector so it can be connected to the larger DVI port(where the apple studio display was connected?) will that make any difference??? Things seem fine but was curious as to the difference???

Many of the Studio displays were ADC. Are you sure that other port is really DVI and not ADC?
My 2004 MDD vid card has one DVI and one ADC connector. I have it connected to a Viewsonic display from about 2007 with both VGA and DVI ports. When I connect the DVI port directly to the DVI port on the G4, the native res looks good but it too small to read (old, tired eyes). If I change the desktop res to make things a little bigger, the image looks like carp--fuzzy and possibly some distortion.
If I use the DVI-to-VGA adapter on the computer and connect it to the monitor. the image is shape and proper at any support desktop res I select.
    You mileage may vary.

  • Wall mounting Apple Studio Display 17" M7649

I have a recording booth and am using the Apple Studio Display 17" M7649  as a display for copy. Currently is sits on a shelf. I need to get rid of the shelf due to echoing.
Is it possible to wall mount this monitor...if so ...How?
    Thanks,
    Antny

Sometimes those ports just die. Wouldn't be the first time.
Other times, it is the ADC connector that is the issue.
    Try replugging the ADC connector.

  • Dual ADC Apple Studio Displays (clear acrylic) with Mac Mini

I currently have the old school Apple Studio Display ADC monitor hooked up to my Mac Mini using the ADC to DVI adapter. I have a second Studio ADC Display and another ADC to DVI adapter to run Dual Displays. I just bought a SEE 2 XTREME DVI to USB which is used for adding multiple monitors. I have it all hooked up. Its just basic plug and play after installing the Mac driver. My second monitor power light just flashes and wont turn on...Any suggestions? I already made sure both monitors and both ADC to DVI adapters worked, and they do. Please Help!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

yea, I checked that out about the light flashes. I have tried both monitors seperately and they both work fine...just not with this DVI to USB dual monitor adapter. Also, when I had them hooked up individually, I made sure the resolution was set the same in the system preferences > displays.

  • DVI to ADC Adapter a 12" Powerbook and an Apple Studio Display 15"

    hello,
i am trying to hook up a 12" powerbook with a DVI to ADC adapter to an Apple Studio Display 15".
i´m just about to buy a used 15" display on ebay.
i was wondering if this is working out together. in the apple store there are two DVI to ADC adapters at different prices and displays supported?
so if anybody could help me out please let me know!!!!
    thank you very much
    regards, g.

    Hi
unfortunately I think the Apple store have sold you the wrong item.
I'm almost certain the DVI to ADC adapter only works with ADC based flat panel displays. DVI ports can output digital or analogue signals (or a combination of the two). The adapter seems to provide digital, which is why it works with the LCD displays, but not analogue, which is why it doesn't work with the CRT displays.
Confusingly Apple did a 17" Studio display both as a CRT and LCD.
Dr. Bott do a similar adapter but they explicitly state it's not compatible with the 17" CRT.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there's a solution, as the display has an ADC connector yet I'm not aware of any adapters available that will work.

  • Boot Camp - Windows 7 (64 bit) - Apple Studio Display - Driver

Used Bootcamp to add Windows 7 to my Mac Pro running 10.6.4
Works great but the Apple Studio Display becomes too dim on start-up of Windows 7 & I cannot control the brightness by using the Display's control.
As well, there is no software control.
Any idea where I can obtain a Driver for this Display for the 64 bit version of Windows 7?
    Many thanks!
    ...John

From what I've found, it comes from some driver introduced in the boot camp update 2.1.
    Some workarounds:
    - install winACD, but it doesn't work on 64 bits systems, so no luck for us
    - boot in OSX, set the brightness as you want, disconnect the USB from the ADC adapter, then boot in windows. But you lose the USB ports of the display, you have to reconnect it when you use OSX if you want to enjoy your display, and you have to reboot 2 times if you want to change the brightness in windows...
Some person said that it was caused by "KbdMgr.exe", but I couldn't find it.
A real solution, like a boot camp driver update would be great...

  • 15" Apple Studio Display Shutting Off

My Apple Studio Display (LCD 15", purchased 2000) visual display is intermittently shutting off. Audio remains functional, and I can still type while the display is absent and when it comes back what I typed (ie, on a word doc) is there. The screen saver does not come on during the loss of visual display - the screen just goes black. When I move the mouse around or hit the keyboard repeatedly, the visual will come back. There are not problems with the display when it is visualized. Here's what i've tried so far:
    1. All connections are secure on the ADC cable.
    2. Tried restarting computer several times - no avail
    3. Checked the display settings in system prefs - energy saver is @ 15min.
I'm wondering if the problem is the monitor or something with the computer. I read somewhere in discussions that PRAM batteries can be a problem (mine has never been changed and I don't know how to reset).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really hope to continue to use my monitor!!

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • Mighty Mouse/ OS Tiger and Apple Studio Display

Not really sure that this topic should go here or in the studio area, but here goes. A few months back I updated my G5 to apple OS X 10.4.x. Up until that point, I had a USB mightly mouse plugged into my 17" apple studio display and could restart my system with no issues.
After updating to 10.4.x, when I boot my system, the USB mightly mouse acts only as a USB mouse and is very sensitive to movement. When I move the mouse a small amount, the point zips across the entire screen.
Once the system is up - if I unplug the mouse from the display and replug it in, then it works correctly and is not sensitive - that is, it acts like it should with the settings I have setup for "speed" in the control panel.
I have searched high and low for others with the same issue and have come up empty. Anyone with any ideas?
    Thanks
    Brian

To clarify, upon restarting, the system sees the mouse as a two button USB mouse. Once the system is up, when I unplug the mouse and plug it bak in, the keyboard/mouse control panel, switches to reflect that this is a USB mightly mouse with all the various options.
This same behavior occurs when I use the USB port on the front of the G5's case.
Currently under the System Information ( apple in the upper left corner of the screen ), the system lists the mouse as an Apple Opticl Mouse, version 1.08
    Thanks

  • 15" Apple Studio Display problems

I have an old 15" Apple Studio Display (Blueberry) that I'm using with my MacPro. Every once and awhile it will flicker. It acts like it turns off and then on. The screen never goes black. I can still see whatever is on the screen. In fact, it gets larger for a split second.
The connection is good. No loose cables.
I am sharing the monitor with the Blue and White G3 using a Belkin Flip.
    Any ideas?

  • MacBookPro 3.1 display is negative mode, Apple Studio Display is positive

When I have the laptop hooked up to the Apple Studio Display 17", all of a sudden, the 'polarity' switched on the display. That is to say it displayed the opposite color mode from the laptop.
I can switch back and forth from positive(regular) to negative using the universal access preference control panel. How do I get the monitor and the laptop to agree?

Hi, the problem is a combination of Boot Camp 2.1 and the ADC->DVI box. I've described a solution here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7211956&#7211956
    Basically:
    [1] Plug everything in normally
[2] Boot into Mac OS X
[3] Set brightness to what you want (eg. in System Prefs, or via keyboard)
[4] Unplug the USB cable belonging to the ADC->DVI adaptor (this means anything plugged into the monitor now won't work, so you may need to also move peripherals from the monitor to the mac, or to a USB hub)
[5] Boot into Windows (XP SP2 or SP3 in my case)
[6] cue "I can see clearly now the rain has gone"
    The disadvantages to this are:
[1] You're a USB socket down on the deal (the display gave you 2 but took up 1, now you only have the 1 that it was being plugged into)
[2] To readjust brightness (if you find yourself doing this regularly... I don't) you need to go Mac OS X-> plug cable back in -> adjust brightness -> remove cable -> reboot into XP.
For me (2007 Mac Pro, 23" stripey Apple Cinema Display with ADC->DVI adaptor) it was happening under an ATI 1900XT and also under an Nvidia 8800GT, each time I'd tried reformatting the Windows partition, reinstalling Windows XP etc. Whenever it was Boot Camp 2.0.x it was fine, but adding Boot Camp 2.1 to the party wrecked the brightness. XP SP3 made no difference whatsoever.
Of note, if you'd rather not sacrifice the USB port (it didn't bother me, as 2.1 also made my 802.11n network finally usable under XP, which was more important to me than losing a USB socket), the original poster in the above linked article suggested reinstalling the Boot Camp 2.0 drivers (from the Leopard disc) as an alternative fix (seemingly they'll overwrite anything Boot Camp 2.1 installed, thus "rewinding"). As I say, for me I needed the wireless network so didn't want to go back, but it might work for you as a 2nd route.
I've filed a bug on this, so let's hope the Boot Camp team knock out a fix soon,
    Ken

  • Help M4868 21" Apple Studio Display software needed

Hi all. I know this post is a little out of category but I need to find out where I can get a Manual and any software required to use an M4868 21" Apple Studio Display with my G5 Powermac. Can anyone help me on this one please...
    Cheers. Derek.

You will need a VGA adapter for your graphics card. You don't need any software. Manuals:

  • Can you use Apple Studio Dislpay with MBP?

Thinking about getting the new MBP. I have a 17" Apple Studio Display that I got with my Power Mac years ago. Since the MBP's now have a miniDVI port, can I still use this monitor with it?

If it's an LCD display, use this adapter as well as a mini-DVI to DVI adapter. If it's a CRT display, you can't.
