Used Mac OS X server no name or password

Hello! I had purchased a used MAc OS X server, and it did not come with the Name or password. Any way to change or bypass?

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1. If you don't own another Mac
a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
3. Partition and install OS X
a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
4. Other issues
a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • Can I remove all but the last "Mac OS X Server certificate management" application password from my System Keychain?

I am slowly nursing a broken Montain Lion Server back to health. The problems started with a name change days ago then went sour, probably because of some stuff in the keychain that tripped the commands up.
I have now a trusted Root CA in my System Keychain which has signed my wildcard Certificate for my domain and all my services are protected by this wildcard certificate. Creating and installing that certificate helped me back (slowly) but there are still problems to solve
I also have set the com.apple.servermgrd identity preference to this (now trusted) wildcard certificate a few minutes ago
I am busy cleaning as much as possibe of junk from my Keychains to improve stability, of course without damaging things (I hope)
There are 19 "Mac OS X Server certificate management" application passwords in my System Keychain.
12 are from 9 days ago when I installed this clean OS X Mountain Lion Server for the first time, created within a minute during server install.
1 from 6 minutes later, maybe when I turned on a Service
2 are from that day, but 2 and 3 hours later (also probably because of something I did in Server.app, like enabling a service)
1 from 2 days later (probably when I tried to change the server name/domain)
1 from again 5 days later (probably when I tried to change the server name/domain again)
1 from yesterday, when I changed the servername
1 from today, when I changed the server name again.
What are these application passwords for and can I safely remove all but the last one? What are they for?

I went ahead and remove them a month ago. So far, there don't seem to be any issues. As long as you double-triple-check that the hash-number in those "Mac OS X Server certificate management" keychains _aren't_ in the filename of any of the *.pem files in the /etc/certificates folder, you can delete those orphan keychains.

my mac is not accepting my name and password for login because it is in arabic how am i suppose to login? how do i type Mark Yap in arabic, im typing it in pressing the actual letters on the keyboard but wint accept  it?

I am assuming that you are trying to log in with the English language. If this is the case (or any other language for that matter), see if there is a button on the login screen that allows you to change your language.

  • Using .mac as outgoing server

I would like to use the .mac as an outgoing server for times when I can't use my comcast server (like when I am on the road). This is for an email address that is NOT a .mac address. I do have a .mac account.
I could have sworn that I had this working at some point in the past, but now it always rejects the outgoing message with the alert:
The SMTP server "smtp.mac.com" rejected the password for the user...
Can someone tell me if it is possible to configure this way? If so, what settings do I use exactly?
Does .mac offer any telephone support? It is very frustrating trying to find out this information.
    Peter

    Hello Peter.
I don't believe you had this working in the past since Apple has always prevented using the .Mac SMTP server for a non-.Mac email account.
I don't believe .Mac provides telephone support.
You can't use Comcast's SMTP server for this email account? Comcast has telephone support but being able to use either Comcast's SMTP server with your Comcast account or the .Mac SMTP server with a .Mac account depends on the ISP used for connecting to the internet when on the road.
If doing so at a hotel, you need to check with the hotel or hotel's ISP for the required SMTP server settings to send mail from an email account outside of the ISP's network.

  • Using Mac Mini as server

I was thinking about buying a Mac Mini, intending to be using it as a server/entertainment center, mainly to store my quite extensive CD/DVD collection electronically. The choice fell on Mac Mini because it looks good, which is important since I am intending to place the Mac in my living room, connecting it with my TV.
Though, I have a question I hope some of you can reply. How will sound/picture be when I connect the Mac Mini to my TV (intending to watch DVD's of it)? I have a brand new HD compatible LG 32' LCD Panel.

Depending on what is available as input connectors on the back of your Television set most people are using the digital DVI connector and getting an appropriate cable that matches both the DVI connector on the back of the mini and the DVI connector on the back of their modern TV set.
If not you are looking at getting another box inbetween the two that will convert computer signals (usually these accept an analog VGA input so you will likely use the included DVI-2-VGA adapter that came with the mini to interface) and depending on the box its outputs will vary, you have to match the box you buy with the best quality input on the back of your TV in common with both.
Sound is standard and comes out of the mini on a DIN connector like audio headphones. You can get a stereo DIN to RCA cable from a local electronics store so you can plug it into your sound system. Be warned that its not line level but amplified so hook it up accordingly to the system you use and be cognisant of this when adjusting volume on the mini and/or the system.
You can see a crazy example of what you want to do with an older television here:
Crazy Mini Entertainment System... some people even put them in cars or embed them into the house as in a kitchen bench.

  • Mac OS X server keeps prompting for passwords on all devices.

    Hi,
I'm running an Mac OS X Server (10.6.8) with iCal, Address Book and Mail enabled. My issue is that the clients (iCal and Calendar in iOS) keeps asking for passwords on strange intervals, and it usually results in it not accepting the right password until you restart the client. It can run smoothly for days and some times it just goes completely bananas. It makes no difference if its a regular user or a Open Directory user.
This happens to all the services mentioned above but iCal is the worst.

Wait do you mean you are running 10.6.7 server right?
When did you upgrade to this version? Was it ok before the upgrade?

  • Can I use Mac Mini Lion server and Time Machine 2Tb together?

I have TM already and am looking to add a Mac Mini running O XS server soon. I use TM to back up my iMac and MacBook Pro laptop at present. My existing setup also includes a PC running windows which is backed up by an HP media smart server. I want to replace the PC with a Macmini running parallels and windows 7 to run my windows program's and want the TM to back this up also.  I would like the MM server to run my iTunes library to all Apple devices and need to access the files stored on the MM server from my iPad. Is this solution workable?

The only differences between the current Mac Mini Server
and the other Mini versions is that it has the quad core i7,
comes with dual drives, and has the "Server app" installed.
So, you could install Lion by itself as the server software
is now a seperate "app" in Lion as opposed to being an
    integral part of the OS.
BTW, what is the problem you are having?
I am running a 2011 Mini Server as a desktop and simply
just did not enable any of the server features when I first
set up and have not had any issues using it as a desktop.

  • Can i use MAC OS X SERVER for few web sites?!

    Can i?!

Here is the OS X Server web page.  That and the pages it links to will be of interest to you.
As Strontium90 indicates, yes, you can host via the provided Apache, and Apache supports so-called multiple virtual hosts.
Though some of the Apple pages indicate that no IT department is required, you will need an understanding of Apache and potentially (probably eventually) its configuration files, of setting up and troubleshooting IP networking and Network Address Translation (NAT) and port forwarding, and of setting up DNS.  You will need to set up DNS services locally, on your NAT'd network.  You will need port forwarding.
To serve these web sites and web pages publicly, you'll also need either a static IP connection from your ISP or minimally an account that does not block TCP port 80 (HTTP) and TCO port 443 (HTTPS) as some ISPs do block those from residential accounts, and you'll probably also want public DNS as folks don't like entering IP addresses.  You'll also need enough network bandwidth for whatever you're doing, and a network gateway-firewall-router device that'll let you port-forward TCP 80 and TCP 443 through to your new server.

  • RADIUS Capabilities in Mac OS X Server (10.6 specifically)

We are building a WiFi Network to support 100 users. Our building is about a city block by a half a city block, so we will be using a lot of Airports (Airport Extreme 802.11n dual). Since we are concerned about security, we will be using Mac OS X Server's (10.6) Radius server.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to record logs of user1 when to siteX at this date and time? I am concerned that if something bad goes down, we can track who did what & when.
Any info on this is appreciated.

If you enable the extended logging using the following commands you will get all the details you are after in the radius log.
$ sudo radiusconfig -setconfig log_auth yes
$ sudo radiusconfig -setconfig logauthgoodpass yes
$ sudo radiusconfig -setconfig logauthbadpass yes
In the log you will then see entries like this
Auth: Login OK: [002500xxxxxx/password] (from client Airport BaseStation port 0 cli 00-25-00-xx-xx-xx)
where 'Airport BaseStation' will be the name of your access point as defined in the RADIUS server admin section.

  • Mac Mini file server with 10.5.8 and folder permissions

Our office has a Mac Mini we use as a file server.  We each connect over our network with a common user.  All of the folders we use are on the root.  When one creates a subfolder, the permissions on the new folder are read only.  One has to go on to the mini and reset the permissions rw- for 'everyone' then all is well.  Is there a way to create a user which we would use to connect from our own mac that will be allowed to create folders with rw- permissions?

If you are using the Go menu "Connect to Server" and logging in with a generic Server User-name and password, the permissions of any files you create should be those of the Server User with which you logged in.
If you are just clicking on a sidebar item and using the Finder WITHOUT logging in as a unique User on the Server, the files you create will be owned by the Creator (not the generic Server User) and follow the Creator's permissions.
I find I am sometimes already connected as a guest, and the login dialog does not come up. If I want specific permissions on the Server, I need to eject the Server drive and Connect to Server again. This time I get the login dialog and can enter the username I desire.

  • Mac OS X Server, File Sharing, Permission

    Hi All,
I’m trying to use Mac os X server Maverick in a small team within my
organization. I was able to successfully install and setup the server, which
resides in a local network. I did the following setup:
         1 )  Open Directory Setup
2 )  File Sharing ,  /Users , available for home directory over AFP
3 )  Created Network users with home folder pointing to /Users
4 )  Bound Clients to the server
5 )  XCode Server Setup with git repository
Users now can login using their own account and their home folder
is loaded from the server. Unfortunately there  are issues. Clients are having permission issues,
which we have never encountered on local machines before we switched to using XCode Server.
Here is a list of some of the issues so far
          Xcode issues on client computer:
               a)   When creating a XCode project, it reports the error “Couldn’t not find build module Drawin” when clicking create
button.I found online a workaround fix that supposedly works, which is to set "Enable Modules (C and Objective C)"
to No. But we didn’t have to do this before using XCode server.
b )  When committing to git repo , the following error happens “fatal: Repository has been updated ,
but unable to write to new_index. Check the disk is not full or quota is not exceeded ,
and then "git reset HEAD"   to recover”  Another work around we found online is to do on the client,
cp index backup ; mv backup index
We don’t want to have to do this every time we create a project, what could be wrong with the setup?

You need to run Server Admin and click on the File Sharing icon at the top. Then click on Share Points, and Browse. You then browse to the folder you want to set the permissions on.
You will see in the bottom half of the window the current permissions. While in theory you can use just POSIX permissions, Snow Leopard prefers using ACL permissions. So as an example to set a folder to be only accessible by members of a specific group and to deny access to everyone else you would do the following.
Click on the + symbol at the bottom
A window will open listing all your users and groups, click on groups at the top
Find the special 'Everyone' group and drag it to the ACL section
Find the group you want to give access to and also drag that to the ACL section but make sure it is above the Everyone group as higher setting override lower settings
Set the Everyone group to Deny Read permission, this will prevent them being able to access this folder
Set the group you do want to have access to Allow Read or Allow Read/Write, the first would let them only be able to read, the second also allows them to create files or modify files.
Now click on the Save button in the bottom right.
You might also want to click on the gear wheel symbol and choose 'Propagate permissions' if you want to apply these permissions to all the files and folders within this folder.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 firewall question

    Hello,
I'm a network administrator in a company, and we use Mac OS X server 10.5.8, with Mac clients.
I have a problem with the adaptative firewall : when someone wants to connect to the server (by using the finder, and "connect as"), if the password is not correct, the adaptative firewall just cut the access of the client for all (It's a DHCP and DNS server, so there is no access anymore to the LAN and the web).
I would like to know if there is a way to make the client blacklisted after 3 bad login attempts, not just only one. I used the afctl command, but it's apparently not possible to manage this problem with that (just the time of blacklisting).
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I don't have a solution for you. But I do remember reading about this one. Apparently what happens is that beneath the surface, the connection attempt is repeated on failure, using differnet authentication protocols. And so one user login attempt with a bad password, leads to three attempts beneath the surface, and "the boot". But unfortunately I don't remember what the solution is, as I was researching for a completely different issue when I read this.

  • Mac OS X Server, Network Home Directories & Time Machine

    hi,
I am using mac os x server to manage a small workgroup using open directory and network home directories, the server is backed up using time machine. From what I understand, time machine does work on network home directories.
However, as I am backing up my server using Time Machine, it is already backing up the user directories. Is there any way of getting a client to access the server time machine backup to access the backups of the user directories?
Of course, it would be easy to restore files by logging onto the server as the user and restoring from there. I am just wondering if there is a more elegant solution available to do this from a client machine.
    any thoughts?
    thx!

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same exact thing and find that it is best to do this locally (for now). Not only is the network way slower, but it seems to make things worse. For example, things backed up via the client machine are routed from the FTP server/volume mount and different permission wise. When you try to restore them locally, it should work, but the folder had different permissions because they were initially created in root (for me).
