Used Macbook Air- How to wipe clean

I just got a used Macbook Air and I want to clean the computer so that there is nothing left over from the person who gave it to me. Can I do this myself or should I just take it to the apple store and let them clean it off for me? If I can do it myself please walk me through the steps.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • I am using macbook air; how to install tata photon plus

bought a new macbook air, using with open office right now. Unable to install tata photon plus.

Those two icons on the Desktop were probably the application, iPhoto.app and Preview.app.  You will have to reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on originally.  If it was included on the Air when you bought it then look on the disks that came with it.  It might look like one of these:
To get Preview download and reapply the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update.  That should reinsatll Preview.  If it doesn't use Pacifist on the combo updater to extract and install Preview.

No computer can do a thing without using memory. 1.5 GB is very little. It's normal.
3 or so hours from a full charge may also be normal, for what you are doing. As batteries age, they don't last as long on a full charge as they did when they were new. All batteries eventually wear out, and are easily replaceable.

Unfortunately, as recommended by the lady from CA, as long as the Mac is still associated with the Apple ID of the original owner, you can't even buy those iLife apps with that Mac. You will always get the alert to download them with the original owner's Apple ID.
As suggested by the chavo from España, you need the original owner to contact Apple Care* and request that the OS and the iLife apps be disassociated from his Apple ID. Then you should be free to OS X Recovery to resinstall the most recent version of OS X that shipped with the Mac and install the iLife apps. Afterward, before using any of the iLife apps you need to open the Mac App Store (MAS) to the Purchases pane and Accept these apps into your MAS account's Apple ID. If you use any of the iLife apps before you have accepted them into your account, as per the app's Terms of Use, they all become one-trick-ponies that can not be downloaded onto another Mac or updated.

*If you bought the Mac from a 2nd hand shop and don't have access to the original owner, you may need to provide Apple a purchase receipt to offer proof of sale.

  • I Just purchased a used MacBook Air but it has no OS, how can I re-load the OS?

I Just purchased a used MacBook Air but it has no OS, how can I re-load the OS?

It depends on which operating system was on it when it was released.  Older MBAs need disks or a special thumb drive to boot for OS recovery.
Let’s assume it is new enough that it has a recovery partition built in.  You can try this and see if it works and if it doesn’t work then it is old enough to need he aforementioned recovery media.
It is simple.  First you format the system disk and then you install OS X.
You will need to be in an area with a good wireless Internet signal.
    Boot in Recovery Mode:
Power it on and when you hear the bong hold down the Command and R keys simultaneously.
    Format the system disk:
    > Disk Utility
    > Select your system drive.
    > Partition
    > Partition Layout: 1 Partiton
    > Options...
    > GUID Partition Table
    > OK
    > Name: Macintosh HD
    > Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    > Apply
    > Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility
    Install OS X:
    > Click on Install OS X and follow the instructions.

  • How can I know if the used macbook air I want to buy has been stolen?

    Hi!
I'm looking to buy a used MacBook Air 11 inch - mid 2013. I have the serial number, but I can't find the date of purchase. The seller is not the first owner, he doesn't have the bill or any papers, he doesn't know when the original owner bought it, and he doesn't how to reach him either. When I try to look at the infos on https://selfsolve.apple.com/RegisterProduct.do?productRegister=Y&country=FRA&id= C02M5570F5N7, the site gives me the model and it ask me to confirm de date of purchase. LIke this:
Is it safe to buy this computer or not?
    Thank you!

    I concur with Barry Hemphill.
In the USA, if the property is determined to have been stolen, it must be surrendered by the individual in possession of it with no compensation.
The circumstances you describe are too suspicious.
    Ciao.

System is MacBook Air 11-inch Mid 2011
1.6 Ghz Intel Core i5 processor
    Memory 2GB
Graphics Intel HD 3000 288 MB
    Software OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

You have to erase the drive and reinstall under your ID etc.

Unless you bought those programs under your account they are not yours and you have no rights to use them, you will also be unable to upgrade or reinstall them.

  • Used MacBook Air 11" erased the hard drive in attempt to reinstall the OSX

    Hello all,
So I have a new "used" MacBook Air 11" that I bought off Kijiji.
It came with a seemingly fresh install of OS X, but I decided to wipe out the hard drive and reinstall a fresh version anyway (because I like a challenge, sigh).
Now, went into Recovery (Command+Option+R) and tried to reinstall Lion using Internet Recovery (it said something about the item not being available etc).
So I decided to do it the old-fashioned way - and I erased the hard drive using Disk Utility (quite a stupid move I realise now).
So, at this point it doesn't boot, it shows something like apple.com/support -1006F with an exclamation mark across the globe and doesn't go any further.
It didn't come with anything but charger, so I don't have anything to restore it with... Did I brick it? Can I restore it from a USB or something (keep in mind I don't have anything supplied. Can I make one using Recovery Disk Assistant from my MacBook Pro, which is thankfully functioning well?).
How do I put an operating system on it now?

Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.

Use the Flash Drive that came with your computer it has Snow Leopard installed on it. If you lost it or cannot find it then call Apple and they will replace it for you, I don't know how much they will charge.
BTW when installing MS Windows please follow the directions whether you are using Boot Camp or a vitualialization solution (Parallels, Fusion, etc.) had  you done this you would not have had any issues.

  • I accidentally deleted safari from a macbook air. how do i get it back

    please help ......
I accidentally deleted my safari web browser from a macbook air . how do i get it back

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HT4906 I deleted iphoto on Macbook Air, how do i get it back?

I deleted iphoto on Macbook Air, how do i get it back?

    Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Used MacBook Air came with admin password that I cannot change.

I bought a used MacBook Air that came with an administrator password, and someone's name in the upper right corner, and I cannot change it. He didn't have the password either.

Here's how to reset the password.  Once in, I would reload Lion and start fresh.
