Used Mavericks DNS Flush Commands with 10.8.5

Mid 2011 Mac Book Air OS 10.8.5. In Terminal, I mistakenly used Maverick's DNS Flush commands dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
I note that 10.8.5 only requires the second command.
Any problems with this blunder? Tks.

Lex,
Hmm, flushing DNS cache. With Safari on all of my Mac devices, I started having difficulty, initially on my iPad, accessing Zite and an internet radio, Tunein Radio Pro. After googling the error message "....cannot find the server", I put in the two 208....DNS numbers. I will now add the others you suggest. at some stage I read an article about flushing DNS caches, it suggesting using the Apple Store app. It seemed a good idea... The app is https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clean-dns-cache-english/id628459184?mt=12. As a precaution I have loaded it only on my Mac Book Air, which is due for a clean install of Mavericks 10.9.2 when it is finalised. The app had a good review, and it would have been nice to have used it instead of using terminal, but I take your point that DNS caches are best left alone. Particularly for tyros! I will delete the app in due course. Thank you for the time and thought you have put in.
Cheers

  • Disk repair using the format - repair command with a mounted partition

I was going to repair some bad blocks on a disk by using the format command with the repair option. When I entered the block number to be fixed it came back withthe question of:
"Repair is in a mounted partition, continue?"
Will I hurt anything on my system if I answer yes to continue or should the partition be unmounted before I do this?
    Thanks

    Did you have any answer?

  • Using perf stat on command with ssh piping?

Does anyone familiar with perf tools in kernel?
    https://perf.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Tutorial
I want to use perf stat to get hardware events data from a command that sends data from home to a remote device.
    For example:
    cat file > ssh user@ipaddress "cat > newlocation/file"
perf stat cat file > ssh user@ipaddress "cat > newlocation/file"
Do you know how can I ensure that perf tools will record hardware event data during delays (over networks)... What I am worried is that perf will only measure upto pipe symbol and ignore anything else (I had this esperiance with /usr/bin/time (after which I switched to use shell time).
I could not find any information on how perf stat is working when there is a pipe in the middle of that command it will measure.
Would it be better to put command below into a sh file and then call perf stat command.sh?
    cat file > ssh user@ipaddress "cat > newlocation/file"

The other command that I trying to use is actually using compression over network..
like gzip -fc file | ssh user@host "cat > /dev/null"
I guess its a better example that what I posted on the first post.... using cat
    @falconindy
I could convert  gzip -fc file | ssh user@host "cat > /dev/null" similar to your example without using a pipe too?
ssh user@host 'cat > /dev/null' < gzip -fc file  ? or it would not work?
    ====
Would putting a command into cmd.sh file create overhead? (of reading a file.. etc)

  • My blind Mom can't find her Audiobooks when using the simplest of commands with SIRI?

I am experiencing problems with SIRI playing an audiobook for my blind Mom. What are the best routes to use this feature? Put all audiobooks in Music or can SIRI find audiobooks anywhere on my IPAD with the right voice commands and formatting. This is an experimental quest I am on the enable her to enjoy books without having to press a lot of buttons! For example, I have an audiobook of Jack London's White Fang but whenever I ask SIRI to play it, it comes back with White Thing!! pronounced Thang ?? Do I need to load a different dictionary of English and I enunciate the word FANG very clearly in English. HELP and Mom thanks you in advance.

  • Why wont dns flush in mac os 10.6.8 using sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Use the following Terminal command to reset the DNS cache I put in sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and clicked return
it asks for the password then enter it tells me
    sudo: dscasheutil: command not found
    What am I doing wrong?
My email provider changed servers and now 2 of my macs can not get to the new dns.

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and my device is doing the same. You would think with the high prices the consumers pay for these prducts, the least that can be done is Apple fixing this ****. This has been an ongoing ordeal for me since ab out mid October of last year. Firewall on, firewall off, it doesn't matter. The **** won't work. Tsk tsk tsk apple.

  • I just updated my 15" macbook pro from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and it's saying Photo booth needs to be updated to be used. Since it comes with the machine I'm assuming I need to buy Mountain Lion or something? Help??

Many apps I would like to download were out of reach because they needed the latest software download to work. I was extrememly excited to hear that the newest update was completely free and knew that it would help some of my problems. I was told that Mavericks could be installed straight from Snow Leopard, but I'm guessing a few updates have been missed on the way? How am I supposed to update my apps like Photo Booth when I am a student with low income and can't afford to buy things like Mountain Lion?
Is there anyway to update my apps without downsizing my software???

First, I see from the screenshot that you have applications on your desktop - how did they wind up there? Any app should be installed in the Applications folder since that is where Software Update expects them to be when it searches for updates. So you might want to move your apps there. Do that, restart, and run Software Update again. If that does not update your very old version of Photo Booth, then I have only one suggestion: use recovery (hold down Command + R keys while restarting or rebooting) to re-download and install Mavericks again over the top of what you have.

  • My external hard drive (1TB WD My Book Essential) suddenly has no room to backup with Time Machine! I am using Maverick OS and wondered if it is because of a bug in the system software.

My external hard drive (1TB WD My Book Essential) suddenly has no room to backup with Time Machine! I am using Maverick OS and wondered if it is because of a bug in the system software. I purchased a new external drive with 3 TB and wonder if I will run into a problem installing it. I don't know how to transfer my files from the previous HD to the New one. I was told to use a cable, but how do I do it? Do I connect them both to the computer and drag the old into the new? How is it done?  Why did this happen, the overloading of the Time Machine?

Why has the TimeMachine drive run out of space?
With the limited amount of information you've provided it is hard to answer this question. TimeMachine should continue making backups until the drive is full and then it should erase the oldest backup(s) to retrieve enough space for the next backup. Unless your computer's hard drive has close to 1TB of space on it, you shouldn't see a message saying TM cannot backup because it is full. However if you do have more than 500GB (1/2 a TB) then I can see how that message might occur. Also, if you are using the TM drive for double duty (backing up more than one computer or storing data other than TM) you could get that message.
Will you have this problem with a 3TB drive?
I always recommend that people look at how much they'll be backing up in total, add a bit extra for the future, and then multiply that by at least 1.5 and even better to double it. That indicates how large the TM backup drive should be. The TM drive should only be used for TM backups. It is ok to use one drive to back up  more than one computer but if doing so, add up the contents of all the computer drives, adjust for the future and then double it.
    Moving Forward
Disconnect the old TM drive for now. Connect the new drive and let TM do its job. I don't recommend that you try to transfer the TM backup from the old drive to the new one. Keep the old drive around for a couple months just in case you find you need it and then after a few months, if you like, you can erase it and use it for something else.

  • Using a dynamic file path with the import command

In one of the BI Publisher blog entries it was mentioned that the curly braces tell the parser that it needs to evaluate this value first before executing the import statement. The example provided was using the built-in parameter CURRENT_SERVER_URL, but it also mentioned that this could be done with any parameter.
I am trying to import a subtemplate using a parameter that will hold the relative path. I am using the following import command in my report template:
    <?import:file:///{$P_SERVERPATH}/Report Path/Subtemplate.rtf?>
as well as the following declaration statement:
    <?param@begin:P_SERVERPATH?>
It appears that the P_SERVERPATH parameter is not being evaluated before the import statement. Am I missing anything?
Any help is greatly appreciated, we are a little over a week from migrating to a new environment and I need to nail down a solution ASAP.
    Thanks,
    John

I believe that you cannot have a dynamic path in the import statement as it is not allowed by xsl.

  • Have iMac mid 2007 using Mavericks . . . will not function with new 2nd display?

Sys Prefs setup with 2nd display using Mavericks . . . the new functions of Mav won't come in with LG display even though same display works with my other Macs. Any like experiences or advise would be more than appreciated?   bumdiago

    Shawn:
One thing that caused the refresh to stop working is when you have error or bad settings in your report. Expand your upper right control panel or EVDRE area and see if everything is good. For instance, an EVDRE usually gives an error message rather than displaying (EVDRE OK) at upper right.
Also, did your input template refresh the data properly every time after you sent your data? If so, you may convert your input template to a report, and see if that will solve your problem.
    Hope my 2 cents helps...

THE use of the apple support is a mess also.
I want to be able to use my MAC fully and easily like I used to with Snow Leopard.
What is wrong with this maverick OS?

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • When using Mavericks, how can I automatically replace 'i' with 'I' when typing?

When using Mavericks, how can I automatically replace 'i' with 'I' when typing?
It was easy to do prior to mavericks using system preferences (language and text), but now I can only submit a 2 letter word to replace, not a 1 letter word. I have tried using a space but it doesn't allow that. I would assume that most people would love to be able to type quickly without having to make uppercase I all the time (first world problem i know), so I can't understand why apple have removed this feature.

There is the shift key, or text replacement approach, providing you have enabled two things:
    Edit > Substitution > √ Text Replacement
System Preferences > Keyboard > TextClick + to add a replacement
    Replaceii[spacebar]
    With
    I[spacebar]
    Press return
    Quit System Preferences
Now, when you type ii, you will see a pop-up offering I.
In the OS X App Store, search for WordService. This free collection of Services will enable you to just type your content, select it, and then choose the Service item, “Initial Caps of Sentences.” It does what it says.

  • Each time I start up my MacBook Air a document appears on the desk top -calendarlogging.txt  I'm synching my calendar with iCloud.  Using Mavericks, but the same file was appearing using Lion.  Any thoughts.  Thanks

Each time I start up my MacBook Air a text file appears on the desk top (calendarlogging, txt) the file/document contains lines of code.  I'm using iCloud to synch my calendar to multiple other devices - iMac, iPad and iPhone.  Using Maverick on both my iMac and my MacBook Air.  The file was also showing up on the desktop when I was using Lion.  Any thoughts?

    Hi everyone,
To anyone who might read this, I ended up re-installing with the original install disc and was able to get back on to Mac, though I lost all of the previous data that I had not backed up. Unsure still if it will continue to let me access the HDD in this, but it kind of confirms that installing Lion probably put too much stress on the computer this last year.

  • TS3988 I can't sync my iCloud with my mack using Mavericks, what can I do?

Hi I'm trying to sync my power book with the iCloud, I'm using Mavericks 10.9.4 and is just not working!

In the settings in itunes, Info > Advanced all the small "boxes" should be unmarked. Then it should sync both ways.
