Used Rebuild and Lost Mail

I USED REBUILD ON ONE OF MY EMAIL ACCOUNTS AND NOW ONLY HAVE SIX EMAILS SHOWING UP OUT OF OVER 300 THAT WAS THERE.
IS THERE A WAY TO RETRIEVE THEM?
I HAVE A POP EMAIL ACCOUNT RUNNING TIGER 10.4.7.
THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Larry,
Unfortunately, this can get a bit tedious, and detailed, but it is very likely all the messages are still there, it is merely an indexing problem. However, issues following conversion from an earlier version of Mail, can complicate working to get Mail to reindex.
Since you have converted from an earlier version of Mail, you probably have issues arising out of leftover files, and conversion to Tiger and Mail 2.x. Also, the mbox file is not used in Mail 2.x, and any found is a leftover file.
I want you to read the article at the link below, and then perhaps get back to me with some observations, before attempting any changes:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301315
This issue of leftover files applies not only to mailboxes you have previously created (which are in the Mailboxes folder the article mentioned) but will also apply to those mailboxes in account folders created prior to the upgrade to Tiger.
In a pre-conversion to Tiger mailbox, the only file that really mattered, in regard to message content, was the file "mbox". In a mailbox properly created and established in Tiger, the only thing that really matters is the folder named Messages.
Thus, if you are able to compare the size of both the mbox file and the Messages folder, at the time of conversion (a mailbox trying to have it both ways), and they are approximately the same size, then you can reasonably conclude everything was converted. There are some very minor exceptions to this comparative analysis, but it basically holds.
The path to the Mail folder is Home/Library/Mail -- within the Mail folder are one or more account folders and the Mailboxes folder.
There are numerous topics about issues surrounding conversion of mailboxes to Tiger and Mail 2.x, from earlier versions. One of them -- the lengthy topic at the link below -- may also be of assistance, and deals with the Envelope Index to some extent:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=413196
Let me know any questions, and if needed, post back for specific instructions, and help after you have thoroughly investigated your Mail folder, and mailboxes, and the degree of conversion that may not have been completed. If you think you have all messages displaying, that you expect to (except for the search issue), then simply removing all unneeded files may the route to go.
Once all leftover files are removed, the at the root level of the original Mail folder, locate the Envelope Index file, and delete it -- if more than one file has Envelope in the name, delete those as well.
Relaunch Mail, which will announce that it is ready to import your mailboxes -- allow this to continue, and in your case, it will really only be reindexing all your mailboxes, and not importing any.
This will refresh this all-encompassing index file, and I think the the disappearing messages will be resolved.

    Try resetting your preferences.
Hold down Ctrl Shift Alt keys, then start Photoshop. You should get a reset dialog.
If that somehow doesn't work, use Windows System Restore to go back to an earlier system state before this happened.

  • Using Thunderbird and not Mail App

I was wondering which app does a Mac use when opening jpegs, gif's etc in the Mail app ? I want to use Thunderbird as my mail reader, but do not know which app that will allow me to open the same files in TB. I am using OSX 10.5. Thanks in advance.

Mail doesn't use anything special. It does it on its own. I would assume Thunderbird would do the same.
Perhaps there is a preference setting to turn on inline images.

  • Webmail timeouts and lost mail

I have seen several topics here  with people complaining that Webmail times out when they are composing outgoing mail, and lose it when they hit send. However, none of these existing posts seem to have valid fixes or responses, and they all seem to be locked down to prevent new comments, so here is my two cents:
    1. I have absolutely experienced the same thing. I've finally gotten into the habit of composing e-mail in an external editor, because I am sick and tired of wasting time recomposing lost e-mail.
    2. The Verizon FAQ states two, contradictory policies, both of which are inaccurate:
    http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/Email/Setup+And+Use/QuestionsOne/121965.htm:
    Does Webmail time me out?
Webmail does not timeout due to inactivity.
    http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/Email/Setup%20And%20Use/QuestionsOne/123344.htm
    Does Webmail time out?
Due to security reasons, Webmail Basic does timeout after 20 minutes of inactivity. However, messages that were being composed before your session timed out will be saved in the DRAFTS folder.
The first one is outright wrong. Webmail absolutely, positively DOES time out.
The second one is wrong, at least in some circumstances. I have no doubt that this is their desired policy, but like many other customers, I'm here to tell you that under at least some circumstances, Webmai-l times out in as little as 5 minutes, and in these same circumstances, IT DOES NOT SAVE YOUR COMPOSED E-MAIL TO THE DRAFTS FOLDER. It simplay takes you to the log in screen, and when you log back in, your text is irretrievably gone. Verizon Webmail has not auto-saved anything for me in at least a year.
    3. I have a theory as to what is going on here, and I am testing it today. Maybe one or two other folks can try this, too. I will report back whatever I find:
I access Webmail through an old bookmark which is defined as http://netmail.verizon.net/webmail/driver?nimlet=deggetfolder
However, I notice that if I login fresh from www.verizon.net and navigate to Webmail, I GET DIFFERENT SESSION COOKIES THAN I DO FROM THE ABOVE BOOKMARK. For example, I get a cookie called -_WL_AUTHCOOKIE_VZCSESSIONID which is not present when I log in using the old bookmark.. There are a couple of other variations, but this seems the most suspicious.
So, my theory is that those of us who often lose composed e-mail after ridiculously short time outs, are logging in from old bookmarks, and that things changed underneath us at some point during a Verizon Webmail update. I am going to try  usng Webmail today from a fresh login, after first clearing out all my existing Verizon cookies, and see if this results in longer sessions without timing out, and saved messages when it does time out.

Oh, and don't even get me started on SEARCH for text within a message. This has never worked, from Day One.
All I ever get is "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again." SEARCH on header text, like Sender and Subject works fine, but apparently Verizon QA has never tested the other options on large mail inboxes.
I'm pretty forgiving and undersrtanding of minor glitches and shortcomings in software, but Verizon Webmail is one of the most unreliable utilities that I've ever encountered from a large company with a huge customer base.

  • Changed computers and lost mail!

    Hi,
I have recently updated from an Intel Imac to a Mac Pro . I used the Migration assistant app too move everything across, and mail on the Mac Pro shows that there are emails available (i.e. the red circle with the number appears on the Mail app icon) but there are no emails visible in mail.app itself.
    Help!!!

    Hi neals61.
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If IMAP or .Mac, try disabling any custom rules you may have and rebuilding the mailbox, i.e. select it in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • After 10.4.9 Update I have duplicate mailboxes! Deleted one and lost mail!

    Hello,
Mail is giving me problems after the 10.4.9 update. I have duplicate mailboxes for each of my four accounts. After deleting the duplicate, I have lost all mail in that mailbox. It seems that although the mailboxes appear to be duplicates, they are not and deleting one deletes contents in the other. I'd like to know whether there is any way I could get back the mail I lost. Thank you in advance to those of you who could offer suggestions.

    You’re welcome.
Yes, solving this problem will probably require re-creating com.apple.mail.plist. I’d like to know what the situation really is before proceeding, though.
How many accounts do you see in Mail > Preferences > Accounts and what type are they (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and lost mail in several Smart Mailboxes

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8. Several of my Smart Mail Boxes lost all email content but others remained in tact. Now the ones that lost content don't accept emails that meet the criteria for the Smart Box.
Anyone have that experience? Any ideas on recapturing? I didn't back up my mail prior to upgrade.

    Welcome to the Discussion,
Smart Mailboxes are only virtual mailboxes, and contain nothing -- they are the product of a search list, and messages must stay in their original mailboxes. All the messages will still in the originating mailboxes, unless something else you did impacted those actual mailboxes, so you should be able to rewrite the definitions for these Smart Mailboxes.

  • How to download selected previously downloaded (and lost) mail - Mavericks?

Due to manual mail filtering under Mavericks deleting some mails when attempting a "copy & delete", I want to re-download selected previously downloaded POP mail.  How can I do that?
The "copy & delete" was tried as manual "move" copies and does not move mail when using filters.
    Thank you!

  • Just installed new OS (mavericks) and lost mail folders. any advice?

I had set up several mail folders. When I installed the new Mavericks OS they all disappeared. Left with Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and Junk. Is there a way of recovering the lost folders? Some very important info in them.

  • Set up rule and lost mail!

I thought I was doing a 'good' thing when I set up a rule in Mail that said if the email address does not contain my exact email address, please move it to the junk folder. I set it up for both my cable company's email address and for my Mac address. Went back into Mail- all messages gone from both accounts!! Wiped out. So I went back into Rules and removed both rules. The Mac mail reappeared but my cable company emails did NOT reappear. Now I can probably recover them cuz I back up every morning but since the backup this morning, of course I have gotten some emails which did not get backed up. What happened?! Where did they go? Can I get them back? Ugh! Judy

I tried rebuilding the mailbox and that didn't help. Judy

  • Upgrade to Lion and lost Mail folder but app still works?

have upgraded to Lion but have lost my MAIL folder, have checked the new place of course but nothing there
also missing the com.apple.mail.plist as well ?
any suggestions on how to get these back as Mail is still running but playing at all sorts of weird games
    thank you,
    Gordie

Why do you say you have lost the Mail folder?  Is that because you are unable to find the Library folder that it resides in?  If so, that folder is now invisible.  Hold down option and click the Go menu in the Finder, then choose the Library item that appears there.

  • Did reset and lost mail app

I reset my touch.  Now I don't have mail, and a couple apps that came pre installed.

With iOS 1.1.5 you can't add apps.  To add aps you need iOS 2 or later,  It appears you hve a 1G iPod. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#ipodtouch
It may be that the Mail app did not come with 1.1.5 . A 1G can be updated as far as 3.1.3 that you get here:
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
