Used super user mode - after reboot, cannot log in as before

Hi. I wanted to gain admin access, so I went into the single-user mode by holding command-S. First I ran */sbin/fsck -fy* It said there was an issue, but that it fixed it. Then I ran */sbin/mount -uw /*
Then the *sh /ect/rc* command. I then ran *passwd root* command so that i could be an administrator on my work computer and subsequently change the KEYCHAIN ACCESS so that I can use it.
Then I typed reboot.
Reboot it did. _Now I am only able to log into my computer as a root user._ As a root user I can see all the users set up on this computer, including myself... and get to all my files.
I need to put this back the way I found it never ever to think I can hack into my work computer again.
Can anyone please oh please help me??
Thanks much for anything you can do!!

Hi Mel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Did you run Keychain First Aid in Keychain Access?
Have you tried going to the Accounts Pref Pane and changing the others' Passwords there?
Or making a new account for a test?

  • How do I reset Tiger Mac OS X 10.4 admin password by using single-user mode

bought a used PowerBook G4 on Ebay. The administrator's password was locked. The Powerbook still can run to the normal screen. However, I am unable to update and install software without a password.
I don't have the original install CD either the second mac for firmware reset. So I wonder if anyone knows how to reset the password by using single user mode or any other methods to do so?
Any input will be greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

This morning we lost power and my iMac G5 (10.4) system got messed up. Specifically, when it restarted, all text in all Finder and application menus were blank (e.g. Click the Apple menu and a long empty white box stretching to the bottom of the screen would appear with no text. The whole box turns blue when you click in it. Ditto for all other finder menus and dialog boxes. Event the User menu was empty. The Disk Utility application shows only icons and empty buttons--no text.)
Restarting in Safe Mode was no better.
I then connected the G5 as a target disk to my iMac G4, and ran the OS X install that came with the G5 (10.3.2). It told me that in order to install an earlier OS X version, I must select certain options: I checked "Archive and Install" and "Preserve Users and Network Settings" (I have 4 accounts set up in addition to my onw admin account) and proceeded with the installation.
At the end of installation, the G4 started (G5 is still in target disk mode) with the G5 as the startup disk. It presented the User Login screen (although it normally does auto-login on my account) but the password for each of the 5 accounts was rejected. The original hints still appear, but it seems that all passwords have been changed.
I then tried the G5 on its own (not as a Target disk) but when it starts up the grey Apple turns into a grey "do not enter" (circle/slash) icon and goes no further.
Can you suggest what I should do now?

  • Help needed: Lion boots only in single user mode after a kasperksy unsuccefull installation

    Hello everyboby,
I used to be a Sun Solaris sysadmin with root privileges, but I can't fix the Macbook of my girlfriend...
    WHAT I WISHED:
I wished I could restore the boot INI/config files of a MacBook (the old one, made of white plastic, not the pro, made of "steel"), so that Lion started at boot, like it used to do, before a "fatal" kasperky installation.
    WHAT HAPPENS:
the macbook plays the chord, shows the Apple logo, seems to load the OS (Lion) and then switches to graphic mode, BUT the desktop (is "desktop" the name of the screen of the operating system, once it's fully started, like on a PC?) doesn't appear, only a grey screen, then nothing happens.
I guess that probably Lion is fully running under the grey screen, but without the screen/video been correctly setup, I cannot interact with the notebook.
I CAN boot in single user mode, mount the file system in writing mode and read and write the disk.
    WHAT HAPPENED:
my girlfriend upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard and used the notebook for a while (one month?), then she decided to upgrade kaspersky, but the installation failed somehow and now the notebook is stuck.
    WHAT I TRIED TO DO:
    - I read this: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSystem Startup/Chapters/CustomLogin.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/10000172i-SW10-BAJCGEGG
    - and that: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man5/launchd.conf.5.html#//apple_ref/doc/man/5/launchd.conf
    - and removed from the disk all the folders and files dealing with startup items AND kaspersky, but nothing changed: at boot the grey screen appears and Lion's interface is not loaded (or if it is, it's not shown).
    - then I looked for some logs, found the kernel's one and found something that looks like an error message dealing with video inizialization... So, it really seems something is not working at video level.
    WHAT I AM ASKING YOU:
some help, please... : is there anybody that can give me some specific advice on how the boot is done on a macbook with Lion? Are there some INI files I can copy into the macbook, so that it starts in grphic mode?
    whatever...
    thank you in advance!
    Dario

I didn't: it's my girlfriend's notebook and she not using a timemachine external disk. She did all by herself

  • MacMini update - after restart cannot log in anymore!!!!

I had my MacMini running unattended for a week or more and today when I returned to it I got a popup requesting me to restart in order to "update" something. So I allowed it to do this. Bad choice!!!
Now when I reach the logon screen and after I have entered my password, there are a circular succession of pop-ups like this:
"talagent wants to use the "Local Items" keychain.
    Please enter the keychain password."
There are 6 different identifiers like talagent, for example CalendarAgent and AddreeBookSourceSync on successive dialog boxes.
I have tried re-entering my account login password and my AppleID password but these do not work. So I use the Cancel button instead and then the dialogs just cycle around incessantly. There is absolutely no way to get out of this as far as I can see....
I cannot even dissmiss the dialog and use some other item on the logon screen!
I have absolutely no idea what this keychain password could be and I have not been asked for it previously either, not even when I upgraded from Lion to Maverick back in November.
    What is going on here?????
I have found other threads here about the keychain login proble , but they all refer to things happening while logged on, but in this case I am stopped entirely from even logging on! And my account on the MacMini is an admin account if that matters.

Boot in safe mode and try to log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
If you can log in, see below.

  • Kernel panic on MacPro in Single-User mode after memtest.

I've had about 7 kernel panics in about 7 days on a new MacPro. 2 gigs of RAM (Apple Installed). Fresh install of OSX (no user import). While going through the troubleshooting process I ran memtest in single user mode. Ran it all night no errors.
So in the morning I typed ctrl-c and then exit (i think)... it seemed to start the process of booting and I got another kernal panic. I've actually done this three times now.
I checked panic.log and all the error messages but 1 were the same. Including the ones I got in single-user mode (copied below).
Should I be able to gracefully exit out of single-user mode without a kernel panic?
Does this point to a RAM error even though memtest and AHD for that matter ran all night without finding anything?
I'm all set to try again (taking careful notes this time) to see if I can reproduce but I was hoping for some feedback first.
    Thanks,
    Craig

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes, your memory or memory slot, or memory seating is bad or off. "Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected. ferr = 20000000 , nerr == 00000000, fErrFat = 20000000 nErrFat == 00000000"
Clearly a memory related issue. It may also be that memtest doesn't know how to diagnose the new kind of memory and is reporting that back to the logs. Take it in to a service center to have all the boards replaced to make sure the issue isn't reproduceable with new memory. If it is, then I'd consider the slots on the logicboard a problem.

  • Photos are dark and cannot be used in slideshow mode.  Also cannot move photos in a sequence.  Also photos will not move from grid to add to another collection.

Lightroom 4, photos are dark when in slideshow mode.  Therefore, cannot create a slideshow.  Cannot move photos from grid to add to another collection.  Also cannot change sequence of photos.  Have searched multiple  times for troubleshooting help online with no resolution available.

Just to clarify my problem with the "dark photos"....when in slideshow mode, photos are dark and state "no photo selected"  I've created multiple slideshows and this was never an issue.  Just downloaded updates as well for Lightroom 4 and this didn't seem to help either.

  • After restart cannot log into Workgroup Manager

Ugh - after a restart (Leopard Srvr 10.5.4 on Quad core Xeon) I am unable to access any user info in Workgroup Mgr, it's just devoid of information. I do see "Viewing Directory: /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1. Not authenticated" along the top of the window. Clicking the lock to authenticate brings up the login screens, but I cannot login.
Seeing some errors in LDAP Log related to slapd(40), but I don't know if these are related to what's going on.
Any assistance you guys could provide would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.

Turns out for some reason our mail server software (Communigate Pro) was set to use the LDAP port that is normally used by Open Directory. CGP was grabbing the port first, and this was screwing up Open Dir. Not sure why this suddenly started happening, the server has been rebooted several times in the past and the config has not changed. Very odd, just glad we got it figured out.

  • AD Users auth Ok but cannot log into AFP Home dirs

    Hello,
I have a problem that has been driving me nuts for around 6 weeks so wondering if someone can help me out.
I have an XServe that has been bound to the AD Server. This server holds the users only. The Xserve is connected to an XRAID. I recently rebuilt The XRAID to be a 0+1 (2 stripes, 1 mirroring the 2nd). I then configured the Home Dirs on the Xserve to reside on the XRAID. I created a folder called UserHomes and then shared this using AFP and SMB. I removed guest access for both protocols. I Added the AD users groups to the ACLs to allow them access. I added the AD admin with full control rights to all folders, and the AD Staff group with read only access to that folder only.
I then used a script that would use dscl to extract the AD users into a list, created a folder for their Home dir, copied the Default template into their home dirs and then chowned the homedir to the AD user and chmodded the homedir 700.
Now, when i try to log in as an AD user, they get authenticated correctly as would be expected but then the login window disappears and the user is left with the desktop picture and a spinning coloured ball. This stays like this until the machine is hard-reset or the loginwindow is quit remotely.
I have tried using mobile accounts for the same user and this results in the user logging in, synching and even having full access to their home dir from the doc as well as all shares available to them, showing that kerberos seems to be working. But this started to do the same as full network accounts as well, ie the spinning ball after login.
I have rebuilt the OD server, the clients and even swapped out the switches and cabling. Same result. I have run tcpdump which seems to suggest things are as they should be (although i don't really know what i am looking for) But AFP logs show the client opening and closing forks but never logging in).
    DNS is resolving successfully also.
Any ideas on what could be the problem

I synchronize the clocks of both the OS X Server and OS X Client with the AD Server. The user gets authenticated fine and the login window disappears, but thats as far as it gets the users then starts to load (open and close forks according to the AFP Log) their profile but it never turns up. No dock, no Finder. I can see that it is trying to load though because if i manage the wallpaper setting using WGM, the background of the logging in user changes. Just doesn't do anything else

  • Mavericks use super high memory after upgraded from 2008 early

I suffered this pain after I upgraded from 10.7 to 10.9 on my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
Just as image shown above, I don't know what reason will cause this problem. It usually gets high with unknown operation.
I only get 4G memory. After I start 10.9, its kernel process and finder process consume almost 2/3 memory, it is so reduclous.
Is there any way I can reduse the memory usage of finder or prevent it eats memory so high ?

    arthur, thank you,
I do worry about it, because 4G is not enough any more for these memory monster =.=
They together eat almost 3.99 GB memory, so that Mac becomes slow and shows SBBOD a lot and not responsive for many many seconds. It slow down my daily work a lot.

  • HT4314 Can someone elaborate on if w have multiple people using the same account.  I cannot log in to my gamecenter account. How do I get into mine and not my brothers

My two brothers and I share a apple account (as is reccomended by apple).  I updated m iPod touch to ios 5.1.1. When I came back I had been logged out of my gamecenter account. This is no problem but when I went to log in. I couldn't get into my account. I kept logging in to my brother gamecenter account. I have a lot of time invested into some of the games and I'd really like to play them but cant without a gamecenter account. If someone would help it would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Tracy,
I don't suspect Malware yet, Id guess Disk corruption or failing Hard Drive with Files not found.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • HT1338 I forgot my administrative password and login. I do not have the CD and every time i try to use single user mode it does not work either.  Is their anything i can do to reset this? I don't care about losing the information.

Please help me ive been trying to do this all day by googling it and using apple.  HELP PLEASE

Hello, is it an admin Login, or possibly a Firmware Protection Password???
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Force Removing Password Protection
    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.
    2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

  • How to move files using Single User Mode

I messed up this one task that i didn't read all the way through and messed up. I Moved SecurityAgent.app (not SystemAgent.app my bad) and instead i moved my desktop to the CoreServices folder and renamed it SecurityAgent.app
How do i put the Desktop Back and put SystemAgents back into the CoreServices. Actually just the CoreServices. I have more than one account on my comp. so i will just fix my Desktop using that account.
    Message was edited by: Connor.K

    Run the following commands:
    mount -uw /
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/
    mv SecurityAgent.app Desktop
    mv Desktop/SecurityAgent.app SecurityAgent.app
    exit

  • After updating Firefox to 3.6.14 it will not start, not even in safe mode after rebooting. Task Manager shows no Firefox running. I tried uninstalling Firefox & then reinstalling it. Stll won't start.

I get only an error message: " XULRunner-
Error: Platform version 1.9.2.13 is not compatible with minVersion >=1.9.2.14
    maxVersion<=1.9.2.14 "
    My system: Windows XP
I've tried the tips on the Firefox help pages.

I withdraw my 'I have this problem too'. My error was different, but a restart fixed whatever it was.
