Hello! Im working for a small company as Java programmer. I have 2 years in the field and have some knowledge of certains tools to use in a small entreprise.
As a non-official system admin of the company, I have been testing many tools that help the company alot.
I would like to know if any of you know of other useful programs that might be good to use for a small company. But first, here's my list:
JGoodies Framework: A great framework for java programming, alot of things that you can use like Look and feel, form, text animations, etc.
CVS : Open Source Version Control
Smart-CVS : Clients to use cvs
Cruise Control: Build automations
Neatbeans: Java IDE of course
Dot-project: a system to manage things like documentations, time card for the employes, project management, etc
Mantis: Bug report programs
Xoops: a CMS that we use to build our website , very powerful.

Setting up bridge as photo database for a small company

My company is using a quite large collection of stock photos. Those photos are currently saved in appropiately named folders, however it's quite hard to find a specific type of photo this way. That's why we want to start using bridge for the management of our stock photos.
I searched the internet for tips on how to do it, however most of the threads are really old (we are using CS 5.1) or not very helpful.
That's why I hope the adobe community can give me some advice on how to set up bridge for a small company network (~20 people).
What we want to achieve:
Bridge uses the stock photo folder located on our server
All photos have tags, if someone changes a tag the other users also see the changed tag
If a new photo is added to the server, it shows up in the bridge of all users
Not everyone in the company is using macs -> everything should work cross-platform, also for the windows users
Not essential but would be pretty helpful: Since 90% of our photos are from iStock, a way to read the tags from iStock and insert them into our photos.
I know that there are other programs which are better suited for the management of photos, however we want to rely on an Adobe product for it and since Lightroom does not seem to be a good choice, we look forward to using Bridge.
Maybe someone else in here also uses bridge for the photo management in their company or knows how to set it up for a network. If so, I would be very grateful for an answer!

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer? ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents. I do not have an iphone, ipad or laptop. Just an iMac. Nothing to share the data with.
Now I am unable to access some of my documents on my computer and saving documents is cumbersome because it always wants to save it in iCloud, not my computer. The documents I am unable to open are my old MS-Word. One is a macro enabled word doc. I am using os x mountain lion.
After over an hour chat with apple care, the issue is not resolved. I did not have more time to resolve the issue today and it will be continued next week. Per apple care, I do not have any documents in the iCloud however I am almost at the free capacity with contacts and documents.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud. Would I preserve my data? Has anyone tried this? I am open to suggestions.

Not really. You can store "Documents in the Cloud" but this applies only to documents created by Pages, Numbers, Preview, Keynote, and Microsoft Office documents created on your computer stored in iCloud's "iWork". Within that limited purpose, iCloud works very well.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "purchase backup from a cloud provider" but if you're considering a service such as Carbonite, I don't advocate any of them. To back up your Mac, use your own backup device - Time Capsule or an external hard disk. It's inexpensive and reliable: two elements essential for a backup strategy, that no subscription service can offer.

Skype for a small company.

Hello.
We are a small company with 5 employees.
We have 2 requirements.
1) Our phonenumber continues (the one to our previosly cellphone.)
2) Our employees can forward the call to another employee
We do only use the phone for outgoing calls inside Denmark to both mobile and landlines.
Is it possible, and what would unlimited outgoing calls to denmark (landline and mobile) cost?

I am no expert on Skype, but i am pretty sure that you cannot move your phone number from a mobile phone operator into Skype.
I am currently working from Ukraine with an office in Denmark, and i have a danish phone number. What we do is the following:
- We bought a Skype number (http://www.skype.com/intl/da/features/allfeatures/online-number/)
- We are routing the call from the danish phone to the Skype number (A setting your danish phone operator can help you with)
This now means that, when somone call my danish phone number, it will actually call you on Skype.
What i then also did, was forward my call on Skype to my Ukrainian phone number. Which means if i am not at work, or don't pick up on Skype, then i will get the call on my Ukrainian phone!

Bulk HTML E-mail for a small company

I'm looking for a software program that will allow me to send e-mails to my customers. Not just text but include (HTML) graphics. We are small company and would only be sending our 50 or 100 e-mails at a time. Does such a program exist?

Can i use iCloud for my small business

I have a small business with 50 employees and want to know if iCloud could be used as an alternative to 365?

iCloud is designed for single person use, and isn't intended for business use. Some business do use it, but there is limited support in the event of problems. If you were thinking of using the @icloud.com email service I would advise against it - apart from lack of support it shows that you are using a free service which doesn't give a good impression. You would be better off with an email service tailored to business users, with proper support and a guaranteed uptime, and getting your own domain for the address,
As to the syncing and other facilities provided by iCloud, though a small number of people might be able to use them I'm not sure that it would cope with 50. I've an idea there is a limit to the number of devices. iCloud drive, due in the autumn with Yosemite and iOS8, may or may not handle this - we don't know yet; but I still think that for any size of business iCloud is a dubious proposition.

Opinion on using properties for your app.

I have a small application which uses a properties file. I want these properties to be global to my application. Throughout the code I may need to refer to the properties.
I created a singleton class which loads the properties file, and then I created a method for each property. So I access the properties through methods, which return the type I want, such as a String, int, boolean...

The only problem I thought I saw with doing something like:
MyProps.getInt("age");
Would be that you have all of these hardcoded strings throughout your code. Also, if you make a typo it could create a few run-time bugs. I considered making a static variable and using it like this:
MyProps.getInt(MyProps.AGE);
If I needed to also make a small tweak to the actual property name, I only have to change it in one place.

I guess this really is only useful if you anticipate you may change some of the wording, which probably isn't that common.

What are useful tools for users with sensory issues?

I have multiple sensory issues, and bright lights, flashing lights, loud noises, high-pitched noises, etc. can be very painful and sometimes incapacitating for me. I worry backup beepers will get me killed.
A lot of websites *including this support website* use flashing animation, noise, etc., triggered automatically, using autoplay, or triggered by trying to scroll past.
I have separate tools to disable autoplay, to disable animated gifs, etc. I can't understand why (a) Firefox enables these misfeatures and (b) Firefox doesn't include one built-in tool to disable these.

I have sensory issues involving bright lights, flashing lights, loud noises, high-pitched noises, proprioception, and some other stuff. I don't have colorblindness.
I also have a fix to use bigger font sizes to reduce eyestrain. I tried using zoom, but too many websites broke with zoom, it kept reverting, etc. If nosquint does zoom better than the default, nosquint might help with that.
But... I still have sensory issues involving bright lights, flashing lights, loud noises, high-pitched noises, and a lot of other stuff everywhere and online, and I still need fixes ...and I also need people to stop beating me to the ground, but that's beyond Firefox.

I have been using Acrobat 9 Pro.
I have also tried acrobat.com and after reading the help file I tried to login to www.formscentral.com but can't.
I have a simple form (pdf) that calculates the hours worked in a 2 week period.
Most of our employees who are not computer savy have to be able to fill it out from any computer and click the send button.

Today it stopped working with a notice of Network resource not found.
So I redid the form with the wizard and put a new link back up. Is it going to stop working again after so many responses?

I am a bit concerned about the content. If it is private data (tend to think it is), then forms central is OK I think. George posted a link to the secure aspects in another discussion. The alternative is to create a web script on your own server (prefer to be secure for such info) and submit the info there. You would have a bit more control that way and could easily add the submitted data to a database. I am not saying I am good at creating such a setup, but it is more of the ideal.

But your script is not outputing the result of the query. So how do we view the returned resultset.

Useful tool for running essbase as a service

Essbase as a service makes it difficult to control single applications. If you use 'Process Explorer' by Sysinternals.com (a kind of task manager) you are able to identify your application in the list of running essbase processes. You need to add the column 'Command Line' and get full information including the App Name as a tooltip when pointing on this column.

I don't really have a question but I was looking for somewhere to give feedback on this product as I have just finished a project where the Adobe PDF Test Toolkit enabled us to develop scripts to test for regression when creating a new version of the solution.
This in turn saved hundreds of hours and meant that we where able to deliver the solution on time.

Which License is good OEM, OLP or Volume Licensing for small company

Actually I am setting up a lab for a small company with 25 users. Confused which license to purchase. Vendor sent us quotation in which he mentions we have to purchase "HP Server DL-380 -G8 Intel Xeon 2.5GHZ " in order to install windows server
2008 R2 OEM Edition CD. Actually I just want to know. Can't we purchase a assembled computer/Machine and purchase Windows Server 2008 R2 OEM CD for successful implementation?. Now, My question to you is. What is this OLP and OEM. Does OLP mean
we can install Windows Server in assemebled computer or machine and OEM means only dedicate company machine is capable to install OEM edition, Just confused, Please let me know. It is just a small company with 25 users. What do you recommend. Thank you for

Couple of things to remember as well
OEM licences comes with the machine probably you have seen laptops and desktop has a windows key sticker that's an OEM license. Only limitation with OEM is you can't use OEM license anywhere else then the machine you have bought it with. If an OEM license
machine dies license will die as well.
With volume license you have the freedom to move around the license. If you have only one license on one machine at one time.
Also when you buy a windows server license it comes with 5 user CALs. So that's why you have to buy 20 more.
Now if you want to know what are the CALs, so CAL is a Client Access License require for a
user/device to access windows server. For example if you have a user and he wants to access share files or printer from the server you will require a user CAL. So if 25 users will access the Server you will require 25 CALs.
Best thing to do is to speak with your account Manager from Dell or HP regarding the license side as normally they are really good in helping.

Please tell me you can use pan/zoom tool for photo slideshow with photos not cropped to screen?

I'm new to Mac and Premiere Elements (former PC/Sony Vegas Movie user), and am trying to do a Ken Burns type photo slideshow wherein my photos are left in their normal cropped state. Right now it seems all photos get cropped to fill the screen size (i.e. 16:9). I saw where you could uncheck the scale photo size to media (or something to that effect) under the general setting in preferences, but using the pan/zool tool still shows photos cropped to fill screen. I realize conflicting aspect ratio will result in black bars top/bottom or left/right of frame, and that's ok/what I want. I'm hoping this is doable? Thanks, Jim

The primary question that I have is what is the end product...DVD-VIDEO Standard on DVD disc, DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on DVD disc or other?
Let us assume for now DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on DVD disc. The next question that falls into line is the one relating to what you describe as an assortment of photos going into this project...what are the pixel dimensions (what range of...) and aspect ratio. For aspect ratio, are we talking 4:3 or 16:9. How many of these photos are landscape oriented or how many portrait oriented.
In generalities at this point, I would ask you to look at:
a. bringing your photos appropriately sized into a Premiere Elements project with an appropriate project preset.
b. leaving Edit Menu/Preferences/General with its Default Scale to Frame Size with a check mark.
c. in the workspace, scaling the photos to just fill the space in the Edit Mode Monitor
d. then one by one pan and zoom a photo with the Pan and Zoom Tool.
If you use this Tool, you should get good results. One consideration is that the process results in the Timeline photo having a much larger duration AFTER than BEFORE. If you see any pros in using this tool for your purposes, then you might want to explore the technique that I described for applying a pan and zoom effect from this Tool to more than one photo at a time.

You also might want to explore fxEffects/Presets for horizontal and vertical pans or zoom. The catch in the presets is that you can apply a pan OR zoom, not a pan AND zoom to each photo.
Keyframing of Scale (for Zoom) and Position (for Pan) should be explored under Applied Effects/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded/Scale and Position properties.
With more details from you, we could go step by step in any of the above.
