Useing my Sawtooth  on a TV

Hi,all.New here, and new to Sawtooth's. I just bought my first one(400mhz,DVD,120 gb hard drive,256mb ram[for now]),and was wondering if there was a video card that would allow me to hook it up to my HDTV.I have s-video,composite and HDMI inputs. Thanks ahead of time for the help!!

Hi
My flashed Radeon 9700 card has a socket at the back which connects to a composite cable. Saying this I have never used it so I am unsure of the quality.

  • Freezing after updating with a Sonnet 1.35 GHz card on a Sawtooth

yesterday I’ve installed (quickly & easily) a Sonnet Encore ST (1.35 GHz) card in my G4 Sawtooth (400 MHz). The Power Mac booted with no apparent problem as soon as the Mac was closed and switched on, with everything... from the OS to my usual programs running much faster and better.
However, since then it has also started to freeze at random, it happened once on Saturday and then 3 times today... the first time my wife was opening a couple of .doc files with Open Office, and then it was while browsing with either Safari or SeaMonkey, also always with Folding@home on and the last couple of time with Temperature Monitor open... and the temperature (of the hd only, od course) was either 33 or 34° C in both cases, meaning (I guess) the problem is neither overheating nor me running programs too demanding. And apart from these 3 freezings the Mac has been on and working most of the day without any other problem...
The card is used, but the previous owner told me he never had such problems... however he has been using the card first on a Power Mac G4 Digital Audio and later on a Quicksilver... maybe it’s the different bus speed of the Sawtooth causing these freezing problems?
However both in the instructions and on the case it’s clearly stated the cpu can be used on Sawtooth too...
When the Power Mac freezes I can only restart pushing the button on the tower... both the mouse and the keyboard are dead... and then it restarts incredibly fast and I can start working again... it takes a couple of minutes in all, but of course it’s still rather annoying, and I’d like to fix it.
The chap who gave me the card told me I should possibly reset the motherboard... any idea if it will work, and if yes, how can I do it?!?

is it safe (for the cpu, I mean) opening the Power Mac when it's on? Or I should boot with leaving the door open?!? However I have just powered the Mac on, left it alone for 20 min with only Folding@home running, come back, open 2 windows on SeaMonkey... and the computer froze when closing down one window, and it took 3 restarts to boot this time: first time it just stuck at the grey screen with the darker shade of grey apple in the middle (with a strange grey horizontal line just over and left from the apple), 2nd restart it booted up to the desktop view, the mouse was working but I couldn't do anything apart from moving it around the screen, 3rd time is now... I don't think it's overheating (but still...). Thanks for the help.

  • Problems getting Sawtooth to boot

First off, I am a newbie when it comes to setting up an OS X installation. I've been working in OS 10.3 for a while, currently OS 10.3.9, and have familiarity with the environment. What I'm not familiar with is getting started, as that's why I'm asking for guidance here.
We bought a used G4 Sawtooth, which just arrived today. I hooked it up and everything looked fine. On booting up, got the chimes and then a welcome to the Mac video and the create an ID part. Walked through this part until I got to the create a .mac account. I don't want to create one, so I left everything blank and tried to go to the next page. Instead it started going through the boot-up. Software Update came up and then crashed. Right now, the system keeps going through a partial bootup (blue aqua background), then the menu bar blinks out, comes back and the cursor keeps going back and forth between normal and an endless spinning beachball. I think it's stuck somewhere in the boot-up cycle. I tried doing a safe boot, but got the same results.
I've never gone through the create an account part before -- other people have done it for our previous and current machines. I think I may have done something wrong. Or maybe something's loose from shipping. Do I need to reinstall and start over? I'd sure appreciate some pointers on how to get this G4 up and running properly.

    EmDeeH, welcome to Apple Discussions.
What CD/DVD with the OS X install software are you using? Is it a universal/reatil version? If it is one that came with another Mac, it won't work.
If the Mac's HD was wiped clean when you got it, use the Disk Utility to wipe it clean again & try a reinstall.
Another possibility. The Mac may not have been plugged in to AC power for a while & the internal memory battery is weak/discharged & may need to be replaced. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • PowerPC G4 Sawtooth 500Mhz and 5 Hard Drives

I just bought a used G4 Sawtooth and I am going to add a total of 5 drives to the machine. There is not enough power plugs so I will need a splitter. Has anyone done this without any power issues? Any issues with heat and these drives chugging in there? Did anyone add extra fans?

... or invest in a docking device and swap them at will on a moment's notice.
I use this one and swap & mount drives in less than 30 seconds via FW. There are other docking device options at the Wiebetech site as well...
Just my two cents, but I'd personally shy from putting five internals in my own Mac (QS), even with a higher capacity PSU than the Sawtooth. Drives may not consume much power, but they sure do generate a lot of heat... Some folks do have configurations such as proposed, though, running the drives with power splitters, an additional card, and/or the use of the optical drive bus; but I'm in agreement with Tom on this.

  • Setting up Analog Output in PCI6025E

I have a PCI6025E board that I would like to setup such that it outputs a sawtooth data.
I used a Sawtooth function signal generator (range 0-4V), which I connected to AO Continuous Gen. I want to output this to pin DAC0Out, which I set up in MAX as a channel called test.
For testing, I also set up an analog input channel, using Differential mode (using ACH0 and ACH8). I connected the pin from DAC0Out to ACH0 and AOGND to ACH8.
When I tested the results using MAX, I couldn't get a signal, and MAX shows constant 5 V output. When I use a Probe on the waveform data, it shows the sawtooth signal.
Can anyone give me a suggestion how to fix this problem? I have tried the Labview example Continuous Sine Generation and set it
up to test, but I can't get any results out of it as well.
I'm using this setup because I needed a signal generator capable of outputting a sawtooth signal, as well as trying to measure any possible losses through cables and the DAQ board.
    Thanks in advance
    elton

    Hello elton,
At first glace it looks like you have everything set up correctly. To replicate your situation, I modified the Simul AIAO Buffer(E-Series).vi example with a 0-4 v sawtooth signal. I am including copies of this modified example both with and without the input line. They both ran fine, and the copy without the input line tested great with a virtual channel in MAX. If these files dont address your particular situation, or if you have any other questions, feel free to post a copy of your program and I would be happy to take a look.
    Have a nice day!

  • Getting support on installation of server 1.2v3

Hello. In addition to my MDD mac which I use everyday, I am planning on using my sawtooth G4 500 as a server machine. I just purchased a whole box set of the Mac OS X Server 1.2v3(looks like mac os 9 or 8). I am having extreme trouble installing this thing. Although, the copyright date of the program is from 2001, for a fee, would Apple SOS support be able to assist me in getting this thing to work? I tried to follow in good faith the directions for getting this thing to work, but to no avail. I keep getting an error: ROOT DEVICE? when I boot from the cd once I have partitioned my drive with mac os extended + reserved some space for the server install. Can someone please shed some light on if Apple can assist me in getting past ROOT DEVICE error? and finally getting to the set up screen?

I agree completely with Camelot: don't even go there.
Server 1.2v3 has nothing to do with any current version of OS X, server or client.
You would do better to put (Yellow Dog) Linux on there, at least you'd be learning
something relevant - re: Linux, KDE, bash, X11, etc.
    http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/hardware/
If you want it to be OS X Server, then yah, take that box back and save yourself really a waste of time and tremendous headaches that will largely lead you to what are now complete dead-ends for that product. Get 10.3 server, but even better, maybe think about a way (in your setup) to run server on your MDD: 10.4 server will run on a MDD G4 just fine, I was doing that for the past couple of years. Put enough RAM in it, and put new hard drives in it, and you'll have an enjoyable experience instead of... pointless pain.

  • Help! OS 10.3 looping in bootup process

First off, I am a newbie when it comes to setting up an OS X installation. I've been working in OS 10.3 for a while, currently using OS 10.3.9 at work, and have familiarity with the environment. What I'm not familiar with is getting started, and that's why I'm asking for guidance here.
We bought a used G4 Sawtooth, which just arrived a couple of days ago. I hooked it up and everything looked fine. On booting up, got the chimes and then a welcome to the Mac video and the create an ID part. Walked through this part until I got to the create a .mac account. I think it's stuck somewhere in the boot-up cycle. I tried doing a safe boot and got the same results.
I've been scouring the Mac forums since for some ideas. I have gone into single user mode and repaired the login preferences. Now I get the login window and it lets me in. Then I get the blue screen with the blinking menu bar and the cursor/beachball combo all over again. I never get to see an icon of the hard drive or the dock. I can't even figure out what's on the machine... I also tried booting from the Panther CD and using Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions (which it happily did). No difference. Also resetting the PRAM -- now I'm getting kernel panics on some restarts.
So, do I need to reinstall Panther? The disks I have are 10.3.2, but it's supposedly running 10.3.9. I have no idea if OS 9.2 is installed separately. (I'm trying to contact the previous owner re some of that info, but haven't heard back yet.) I would really like to set this baby up so it can boot up in both 9.2 and 10.3. I'm going to have to apply all the updates again if I reinstall, right? Also, what about the firmware? What can I do about that, when I can't even get to a point in the bootup process where I can log onto the Internet -- should I order an update CD?
The machine has two PCI cards. One is a SCSI card, the other has two extra USB ports. Do I need to hunt down drivers for these, as well?
I'd appreciate it very much if the Mac community here can get me pointed in the right direction. I'd really like to get this machine up and running. Thanks!

EmDeeH, welcome, Boot up from your install CD (C key down) and when you reach the screen to select a destination drive, click on the drive once, then click on the Option button. Select the Erase and Install option, click on OK.
Also it is a good idea at this point to select Zero all data, this can be a very time consuming feature depending on the size of your HD, but believe me it is well worth it. You should now be ale to proceed with the install.
If you are suspect of the Software Updater then cancel when asked and just download the 10.3.9 Combo Update here.

  • Want to stream music help!

I have an iMac 17" 1ghz (older ima) with an airport card in it.
Right now I have the iMac streaming music to our stereo with in
    Airport Express.
I am currently using my Sawtooth as a music machine, so right now to
get my iTunes to play to the stereo I have to
    1) Start Sawtooth/itunes
    2) Start iMac/iTunes
    3) Select shared library on the iMac from the Sawtooth, then stream.
Can I just switch the airport card out?????? Or can I stream via the Netgear wireless router.
Both computers are connected to the router via ethernet
    Thanks Laura

Can I just switch the airport card out?
No. The 1 GHz iMac G4 uses the AirPort Extreme card which is NOT compatible with the Sawtooth Power Mac G4.
Or can I stream via the Netgear wireless router.
    No
But you could connect the AirPort Express (AX) via Ethernet to the Netgear and then stream directly from the Sawtooth to the AX.

  • Microphone - no sound

    I am using a sawtooth G4 with sys 10.3.9.
I am using a Radio Shack Brand microphone. The audio-in works because I can see the levels move in system prefs and I can record the sound. However, I cannot hear the sound while I am recording it. I can onlyhear it on playback.
LineIn didn't work for me...it just hung on me. Using OSX 10.3.9. The webpage said 10.3.9 is supported... so LineIn isn't a viable option.
    Any help?

  • FORCED uprage to iTunes 7?

OK so I am running iTunes 7 on my iBook and QS.
Nice but let's face it, its a RAM hog and you should only use it if you have new enough hardware to support all the new features.
My sister called me to let me know she tried to buy a song today and she got a message saying"Please upgrade to iTunes 7 to continue using the iTunes Store"
That's BS! She's using a Sawtooth 450 with 768Mb pf physical RAM and a 32Mb video card that would be slowed to a crawl if she had to use iTunes 7 along with any other programs she normally uses at the same time. I purposely kept her on iTunes 4.9 to keep the bloat from newer versions from affecting her computer's performance.
The newest quicktime is installed so i fail to see why there is a forced need to upgrade as even DRM changes could be made through an update there. Is there any work around or way I can avoid upgrading her to itunes 7 but would allow her to keep buying her songs?

No, iTunes remembers the info from when it was burned.
Insert the CD on the original computer.
iTunes menu Advanced -> Submit CD track names.
When you insert it in iTunes on another computer, it should look up the info at Gracenote.

  • Fuzzy Metronome Sound is leaking into Speakers.  However, not recording?!

    Hello,
I am using a Sawtooth 450 with 700+ ram. My audio input is through a USB Divice and I am playing audio out through the internal speaker of the computer.
I am recording audio through a mixer from a Mini Disc player. One Vocal Track.
Before I go fitzing and futzing, is there a quick reason why I'm hearing this..... I did not hear this on my G3 iMac 700.
    Oh, I'm running GB 2.0.2
    Thanks.

The metronome will not record unless a mic picks it up coming out of speakers. You say it is "fuzzy"? As in distorted? Does other audio also sound distorted? Or do you merely not want to hear the metronome? If that's the case, you can simply turn it off in the Control Menu. It's handy when you need it, and annoying when you don't. Perhaps we need a little more detail on your setup and description of the problem.

  • Apple Customer Support ROCKS!

I ordered a BTO octuplet core with an upgraded graphics card and hard drive. I got a ship date of just under a month. About 3 days later, the apple online store for the same configuration said 3-5 days. So a week goes by expecting to get an email that my ship date had changed... nope. I'm ten days into the wait for a machine that the online apple store says takes a max of 5 days to ship. I call up Apple and get a live person in less then a minute.... they not only get me a machine on my doorstep within a week, but give me a few upgrades for free (a second superdrive and a wireless card). Seriously, no one compares to Apple when it comes to customer care. One better, you can always take it to any local Apple store and get your needs met equally well. If that was Dell, you'd be on hold for an hour, followed by an awkward conversation with someone in India reading from a script, and with absolutely no resolution after your time invested. I just love Apple and it's the reason I will never voluntarily buy another win pc again.

Johhny Apple Seed, is that your real name ?
Apple sold me some great mac's over the years, We still use a Sawtooth and a Mirror door 1.25, My latest Quadie died twice since New purchase 17months ago, so I sold it very recently after apple repaired it again under warranty. Now I wait patiently for My new Macpro. These newer machines don't have the Longevity that the older units did, BUT, they certainly perform Better, just not for as long. My second ever mac was a Quadra 950,it was a grunter in it's day.
I've also had, and still have some good windows boxes, they are cheap to Buy & fix, when you can pinpoint the problem/s. I believe what kills a windows box is having it connected to the Net.

  • Track Grouping and accurate control of track/group volumes

    Hi,
Newbie to Garageband so bear with me...
Firstly, is there a way of grouping tracks together and apply effects to the group as a whole (independantly of whatever effects are applied to the tracks within that group)? and...
Secondly, is there a way of having precise control over the volume of a given track/group of tracks?
What I am trying to do is create a dance track in which there a section which you would imagine playing with a strobe light going off, ie the volume is max followed by min straight away, max, min, max, min etc., with the min parts cutting sound completely.
Thing is, all I can see in Garageband is the ability to add points to a line (creating a sawtooth look). What's more, it seems that if, using this sawtooth, a note plays when at sawtooth is at max then it doesn't cut the volume when the sawtooth is then at min.
    Any suggestions?

Not that I know of. However, there is a Master Track that applies effects to all tracks (i.e. all tracks grouped together on the stereo mix), but no ability to create groups of only some tracks and apply effects to them. So as far as I know, in GB, it's either 1 track or all tracks.

You can mimic a square wave by adding dots and dragging a dot until it is almost directly under the other dot, and then having a dot to the right of it (still at the bottom) and adding a dot almost right above it, and then another dot to the right of it at the same volume... basically draw a square wave using dots, so the audio flashes on and off. And if you do this on the Master Track, it will apply to all tracks.
However, to make it work well, you'd want to zoom in all the way to be able to get the dots as close to vertical as possible. You do this by sliding the zoom slider on the lower left all the way to the right. If your automation track is open, you can see that little differences become big differences. Zoomed in all the way, you can make adjustments that will snap to the next one so fast, it should sound like a square wave. You can see where the threshold is... if you slide a dot directly over another one, it eats it up, but slightly to the side, it coexists. It won't be a perfect square wave, but it should be close enough to sound like one.

  • G3 B&W and Sawtooth use different memory?

Hi. I tried to add some memory modules to my new-to-me Sawtooth that were pulled from my older B&W. They didn't seem to work.
Am I correct in surmising that the memory is a different type in these two machines, and hence incompatible?

PowerBook Titanium G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   Also PowerBook G3, eMac, and misc elderly models

A quick way to tell - if there are only three RAM slots, it is a Digital Audio model and needs PC133 RAM; if there are four slots, it is a GE, AGP, or PCI model and can use PC100 RAM.
This necessitates a physical look - Apple System Profiler usually reports four slots for a DA, even though it actually has three.

  • Can I use G4 Gigabite motthrboard for G4 Sawtooth?

My G4 Sawtooth built-in Firewire ports were burned. I want to replace the motherboard, Can I use a Gigabite motherboard to replace the Sawtooth's?
    Thanks.
    Robert

Just come back to make sure that you meant that to use a QS 2002 motherboard for replacing my G4 Sawtooth motherboard, right?
No, I meant get an entire machine.
The Sawtooth PSU can only power/connect to a Sawtooth logic board.
Though the GE board will fit the Sawtooth case and I/O panel (back wall of case), the GE PSU is also needed.
A Digital Audio uses the same PSU as the GE, but the I/O ports are different, so the Sawtooth case door needs replaced with a DA case door.
The Quicksilver board not only needs a Quicksilver PSU, but also needs a Quicksilver case door, this due to the I/O ports being different.
The case door can be changed by drilling out the rivets on the hinge, and reattaching the new door, but if one buys an entire machine for parts, why not just use that machine?
I understand your attachment to the Sawtooth.
I used mine for 10+ years, but have since moved all compatible parts to a Quicksilver machine.
I documented the Sawtooth upgrades here:
