User-accessible memory...144-pin vs. 200-pin

Hello Ladies and Gents,
I currently have only the factory installed 256 MB of memory. I want to improve my iMac's performance by increasing the amount of RAM. I have checked around the Apple website and boards. The following is an excerpt from Apple Support article 88298 (last updated 2/27/04).
+"This document explains what type and speed RAM is used in iMac (Flat Panel) computers.+
+iMac (Flat Panel) computers only work with PC133 SDRAM. The maximum installed RAM that can be used is 1 GB. RAM modules of 128 MB, 256 MB, and 512 MB sizes can be used in both slots.+
+There are two RAM slots in the iMac (Flat Panel) computers. They are:+
+* A user-accessible 144-pin SO-DIMM slot.+
+* An internal (factory-installed) 168-pin DIMM slot+
+The Apple System Profiler will show the two different types of slots and what amount of RAM is installed there.+
+The user-accessible slot requires PC133 speed RAM. PC100 RAM is not to be used with iMac (Flat Panel) computers and may create performance and reliability issues."+
Unless I've misunderstood, there have been some postings on the board that state otherwise. For example, the article says 1 GB is the max and to use a 144-pin module. However, there have been posts saying the max is 2 GB and that a 200-pin module can be used.
I would appreciate any guidance you might provide.
Thank you!
Shawn

Hello Shawn,
The iMac G4 (USB2.0) 15" 1GHz uses PC2700 RAM. The maximum is 2GB (1GB 200pin SODIMM & 1GB 184pin DIMM). Your current 256MB will be installed in the 184pin DIMM slot. I recommend that you install a 1GB 200pin SODIMM in the user-accesible slot for a 1280MB total. IMHO it's not worth the cost or complexity to go any higher on this older Mac:

Will 512MB PC133 144-PIN SDRAM SODIMM LAPTOP RAM be suitable for my iMac G4 800? The spec seems to meet the requirements as specified in other posts. It is available on e-Bay at less than £25.00
Thanks in advance of your help

Well that is the correct specification, but as always buyer beware on ebay. Is that seller going to replace the module or accept a return if the module doesn't work? Having had trouble with cheap (and even branded) RAM in the past I only buy from reputable Mac-friendly suppliers now and happily pay the extra for the piece of mind:Crucial

  • Why is Src and Dst memory not pinned?

I just completed my first video filter that is CUDA accelerated using the Premiere Pro SDK for CS6 and CC7.  If suitable CUDA hardware is available, it use it, but if not then it uses a multithreaded software implementation.  Both work extremely well.  However, the CUDA implementation could be a lot faster if the source and destination memory buffers were "pinned" memory.  Since they are not, I must copy the source and destination memory to a pinned buffer, and then asynchronously copy that to CUDA device memory and back.  The overhead to copy from the source/destination memory to pinned memory is significant.  Without the copy to pinned memory the CUDA on my laptop is fast enought to process 130 fps for a 1920 by 1080 HD video.  However with the pinned memory I only get about 45 fps.
If I do the exact same filter in DirectShow, the source and destination buffer pools are always pinned and the filter runs much faster than it does on Premiere Pro.  I noticed that the new GPU filter example uses and AE interface, but it does allow access to pinned memory.  However, I have not mastered the AE interface, and I am reluctant to giving up 13 years of learning curve on the Premiere SDK.
Is there any good reason why the source and destination buffer pool in the Premiere Pro SDK is not pinned memory?
    Gene

    Steve,
That is my whole point.  To copy from the PC host memory to the CUDA device memory asynchronously, the host memory must be pinned.  Hence, the source and destination memory should be pinned.  Otherwise, I must copy the source memory to pinned memory I have allocated on the PC, copy it asynchronously to the CUDA device memory, process it on the CUDA device, asynchronously copy it back to the PC pinned memory, and then copy it to the destination memory.
If you copy synchronously, it is slow as Christmas!  Therefore, you must copy the memory asynchronously, or you should not use CUDA and GPU acceleration.
My question still stands.  Why is the source and destination memory on the PC used by Premiere Pro not pinned memory?

  • Does the iMac with Retina 5K Display have "user accessible" SO-DIMM slots or not?

The Apple Site "http://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/" for the iMac with Retina 5K Display states for memory that it has "four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible".  What does that really mean?  Contact with Apple support indicates that the newest iMac is sealed, therefore I MUST order it with all of the memory I need, or I would have to break the seal (tear it apart) to upgrade the memory later to get to the memory slots...there is no access door as there was in earlier iMacs.  Is the memory in slots or soldered in?  How can that be interpreted as "user accessible"?  This seems very misleading, or Apple support has it wrong.
Sorry if this seems like a rant, but it sort of is.  Does anyone know the facts on this?

The previous 27 inch iMacs had the same statement. It means that the user can access the memory slots and add or change ram. There is an access panel on the iMac. On 21 inch iMacs there is no door and the ram is not user accessible.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 mid 2010 motherboard memory module pins damaged

    Hi everyone,
This morning, after another computer crash I've decided to get rid of the dust inside of the tower.
When I put back the bottom, memory bodule I've noticed that it wasn't going in very smoothly - to realise that I've damanged some pins connecting the module to the motherboard (image attached).
I'm now trying to figure out what to do with it - is just the pin part replacable on the motherboard or do I have to replace the whole motherboard?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

That is a remarkable amount of damage. Did you capture a foreign object between the connectors? Check the mating connector.
I have used a pen-knife (very small flat blade) or screwdriver to push similar pins back into position.
If you cannot straighten them enough, or if any pin breaks off, the backplane board (that holds that connector) would have to be replaced. A used backplane board should not be expensive, as there is not much failure-prone stuff on it, so they should be plentiful on the Used market. Note that the Processors are on the slide-out shelf -- do not order the processor board by mistake.

  • Help how do i retrieve files hidden due to deletion of user? memory still shows they are they're on HD?

    Hi,
It all started when I changed the name of the user and wanted to change the user/folder to have the same name. I manged to do this following a site tutuorial which required you to make a secon user, when I deleted this user I must of clicked the wrong setting as my dock changed, most programs/apps are still here but it now displays no files in documents etc? The hard drive shows the memory is still being used so the files must be hidden to me now?
Only one Apple ID has ever been used.
    Thanks

    Hello TomGreat86,
I would recommend this article named Mac OS X: How to recover a home folder (directory) found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2258
Recovering a deleted user account or user's files from the same computer
If you just want to recover certain files from a deleted user, skip to step 5. If you want to resurrect everything from a deleted user account, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    Click Accounts.
Create a new administrator account (select the "Allow user to administer this computer" checkbox). You can use the same short name as the former user's account if you wish—this account will essentially replace the former one.
Note: If you don't want this account to have long-term administrator access, deselect the "Allow user to administer this computer" checkbox after completing the rest of these steps.
Log out of your account, then log in as the new user account.
Go to /Users/Deleted Users, then double-click the deleted_user.dmg file (where deleted_user is the name of the deleted account) to mount the disk image on the desktop.
Note: If the Home folder was protected by FileVault, you'll need to enter the former user account's password to proceed. In general, make it a point to turn off FileVault before deleting a user to avoid this situation.
If you only want certain items, drag those files onto your desktop to copy them. If you want to resurrect the deleted account, copy everything from the disk image to the same locations in your (new user's) Home folder.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • DB error - Ran out of memory retrieving results - (Code: 200,302) (Code: 209,879)

I am encountering an error while running a big job of about 2.5million records running thru the EDQ cleansing/match process.
Process failed: A database error has occurred : Ran out of memory retrieving query results.. (Code: 200,302) (Code: 209,879)
The server has 8gb memory with 3gb allocated to Java for processing. I could not see any PostgreSQL configuration files to tune any parameters. Need some help with configuring the PostgreSQL database I guess. Appreciate any suggestions!!

    Hi,
This sounds very much like a known issue with the latest maintenance releases of EDQ (9.0.7 and 9.0.8) where the PostgreSQL driver that we ship with EDQ was updated to support later versions of PostgreSQL but has been seen to use huge amounts more memory.
The way to resolve this is to change the PostgreSQL driver that ships with EDQ to the conventional PostgreSQL version:
    1. Go here PostgreSQL JDBC Download and download the JDBC4 Postgresql Driver, Version 9.1-902.
    2. Put this into the  tomcat/webapps/dndirector/WEB-INF/lib folder
    3. Remove/rename the existing postgresql.jar from the same location
    4. Rename the newly downloaded driver postgresql.jar
    5. Restart the 3 services in the following order: Director database, Results database, Application Server)
With this version of the driver, the memory issues have not been seen.
Note that there are two reasons why we do not ship this driver as standard, so you may wish to be aware of the impact of these if you use the standard driver:
    a. Drilldown performance from some of the results views from the Parse processor may be a little slower.
    b. There is a slim possibility of hitting deadlocks in the database when attempting to insert very wide columns.

    Tim,
    Are you compiling the client?
We experienced what sounds like it could be the same scenario...that even if
we weren't doing anything...that memory was still being eaten up...(we
created a simple window that repeatedly polled the OS for the memory usage)...
As soon as we compiled the client....presto...no more memory leaks. We never
did find the exact cause of the leaks...

The Forte runtime is millions of lines of compiled C++ code, packaged into
shared libraries (DLL's) which are a number of megabytes in size. The
space is taken by the application binary, plus the loaded DLL's, plus
whatever the current size of garbage collected memory is.
Forte allocates a garbage-collected heap that must be bigger than the size
of the allocated objects. So if you start with an 8MB heap, you will always
have at least 8MB allocated, no matter what objects you actually
instantiate. See "Memory Issues" in the Forte System Management Guide.

    performance, memory use etc)?
We seem to see a lot of the memory is taken by the Forte client apps (seen
    in the Task Manager
of NT) in respect to the other native Window apps. For example an
executable of approx 4Mb takes up to
15Mb of memory. When I look at the objects retained in memory after
    garbage collection, these are about
2Mb. Where do the other Mb's come from?

    Hello,
I know I know - this is another ram thread...
But I read the others (6-7 of them) and when I go to
Crucial RAM install guide I only get the option to
buy either 256 og 512 blocks.
That's because the computer uses two different kinds of memory modules. Most online configuration systems only know how to work with systems that take a single type of memory.
    I have a 1.2 Ghz 20" iMac USB2 version and I would
like to max it out at 2GB ram if it is possible.
Sure. No problem. You just need the right modules:
    1. Where do I buy the two blocks ?
Get them from Other World Computing. They know Macs, they will make sure you get the right modules for your needs, and they stand behind their recommendations.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with them.
I looked-up your system manually, and here's what you need:
    For the factory memory slot:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/2700DDR1024/
    For the user-accessible slot:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/2700DDRS1GBA/
And, of course, call them to double-check my recommendations. They may have a cheaper module available. I just picked the first ones that matched-up right. They can help you locate exactly what you need and get the best-priced brand for your needs.
    2. Does anyone have a install manual for the
    manufacturer block ?
Try looking over the 17 MB manual for the 17-inch iMac G4 on this page:
    http://www.baconeggs.co.uk/manuals/index.htm
    3. My current iMac has 768 mb ram - 256 mb in
DIMM1/j20 and 512 in DIMM0/J22 ... Which is the one
the user can reach ? if I have 512 in the
manufacturer slot I only need 1 GB for my user-slot.
Can't really say for sure. But, DIMM0 usually is the factory DIMM. But, it could vary by system.
If you want to know for sure, just remove the user-accessible memory and then see how much memory the system says it has.
I know you allready helped a lot others with ram
questions but I really tried, and I really hope you
    can help me too!!

All HP replacement part numbers end in -001, the replacement part number is normally located by the end user accessible memory slot on the bottom of the laptop.  I believe this is your machine:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01311536.pdf
I looked at the system boards, there are 5 part numbers, but if you don't live in Germany, that gets rid of two, if it is not a AMD processor that gets rid of one, now you just need to find out the size of the video RAM 256 or 512 and you'll have narrowed it down.  Hope this helps, if it does, kindly give me some Kudos!
