User Account Image Replaced Without My OK

Today I was using a wireless network at a car dealer while my car was getting fixed. Before connecting to this new network, I turned all my sharing options off.
When I came home, I noticed that the image on my user account had been changed, and not by me. How is this possible? I certainly didn't click on anything and there were no interface messages that appeared while I was connected. There's nothing in the Console logs that relates. I'm kind of worried about security now.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I'm running 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro and all my software is up-to-date.

What was your image and what did it change to? Where did the new image show up? I was able to find another situation that sounds similar.

  • Checking Computer AND User Account against AD without TLS

    Hi Folks,
i am working on a customer site with 5500/ACS5.2/AD/WZC. The Customer looks for a good Authentication Scenario but decides against TLS. So we tested PEAP with checking the AD for a valid Computer Account and User Auth. But, if i use a Laptop with no Domain Computer Account but a valid User Account, i  can gain Access. Is it possible that the ACS can check for a valid Computer AND User Account and successes the Client only if both Accounts are available and valid?
    Regards, Michael

Hi Nicolas, thx for this Hint. I did  today the Host Lookup and "was machin auth" thing, but anyway, my own Laptop
that is not in the Domain can connect with a Domain User ID to the Network. Any Hint or Trick? I saw on other Discussions you referred to that some Users did an AD Rejoin, what do you think?

  • How to disable a local user account ?

    Does someone know that ?
    Thanks in advance,
    p.a

Hey p.a., thanks for the info. I did a little research myself and found two documents by Apple which deal, besides others, with this. Just want to share these info for future reference: 1) [Mac OS X Server User Management|http://images.apple.com/euro/server/macosx/docs/UserManagementv10.5.mnl.pdf] and 2) [Mac OS X Server Command-Line Administration|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/CommandLine_Adminv10.5.pdf].
I quote from the first (p.60).
    *Disabling a User Account*
To disable a user account, you can:
--> Deselect the “User can access account” option in the Basic pane in Workgroup Manager.
    --> Delete the account.
--> Change the user’s password to an unknown value.
--> Set password options to disable login. This applies to user accounts with the password type Open Directory or Shadow Password.
    From the Command Line
You can also disable a user account using the dscl and pwpolicy commands in Terminal. For more information, see the users and groups chapter of Command-Line Administration.
I prefer the method via Workgroup Manager as part of the [Server Admin Tools|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/serveradmintools1053.html]. There was some disagreement on whether the Workgroup Manager works on a client version machine some time ago, but I can confirm that it works really well on clients, too. (Hint: To start the Workgroup Manager for a local computer, type "localhost" as address - without the quotation marks.)
And again, the guide for Command-Line Administration states (p.106):
*Preventing a User from Logging In*
Sometimes it is necessary to revoke a user’s ability to access the computer. This involves preventing the user from logging in and then terminating the user’s processes. The latter can be done by forcing the user to log out and then killing remaining processes, or by just killing the user’s processes.
To prevent a user from logging in:
Disable the user account by entering the following command:
    $ pwpolicy -a diradmin -u ajohnson -setpolicy “isDisabled=1”
Replace ajohnson with the short name of the user account and replace diradmin with the short name of your domain administrator account.
Note: The pwpolicy command only works for LDAP/Password server users. For a local user, use Workgroup Manager or the Accounts pane of System Preferences.

  • How to transfer all songs from a user account to another

On the same Windows Vista computer, how to transfer / copy all music from one user account to another without using another computer or home sharing?
(Please also consider that the iPad will also sync with the new user account without losing any songs.)
Note: iTunes for Windows version 11.0.4.4

    Yes, that would work too.
The iPad backups will not be transferred, am I right?
Hmm, I think you are right. If I recall the backup exists in the user profile, so that would be the case.
Is it sure that the iPad will be synced with User 2 without losing any songs?
Yes, but to be safe, backup and sync the device with user 2 before deleting user 1.
You should also maintain a separate backup.

  • ITunes will not open in Windows 7 for one User. All I get is the Licence Agreement pane and when I click YES nothing further happens. I have set up a second user and iTunes opens without problem in that User window.

Clearly something is blocking the main user(administrator) from opening the iTunes programme and I cannot find a solution.

Many thanks for your reply. Yes I carried out the suggested procedure in safe mode , which did not resolve the issue and so this is what led me to set up a second User account. iTunes opened without problem in this second account and so I looked at the User-specific troubleshooting but I just could not locate the iTunes Preference files no matter how much searching I did.
I also tried uninstalling and re-installing but the problem persists. Would be very grateful for any further advice.

  • Mail not delivering to new user account

    Hi,
Whilst troubleshooting what seemed like a user account problem, we created a new user account to replace the old user account. The new user account has a new shortname in WM. The old user account was deleted in WM. The new user account has the OLD shortname and email alias mapped to it in WM.
Email gets delivered to the NEW mailbox if its sent to [email protected] Email to [email protected] and [email protected] still gets delivered to the OLD mailbox.
How on earth can this be? Where are the email aliases mapped?
    Cheers,
    Stu

Used "dscl localhost -read '/Search/Users/[oldusername]'" to search for records with the username and found a stale directory entry. Used "dscl localhost -delete '/Search/Users/[oldusername]'" which deleted the stale record and everything started working.

  • Computer rebuild due to virus, now itunes does not recognize user account

My computer was infected and had a computer guru clean and restore computer.  When he name the computer I guess he named it differently or something.  I receive the error message, and I can't figure out how to save the window as a picture, message says,
The information on the iPhone "iphone name" is synced with another user account.  Do you want to sync this iPhone with the information from this user account instead?
"Merge Info" merges the information on this iPhone with the information from this user account.
"Replace Info" replaces the information on this iPhone with the information from this user account.
Okay, I'm already freaking out because the first message that I cancelled was
"The iPhone "iphone name" is synced with another iTunes library on "pc name".  Do you want to earse this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
So, my question is this, I do NOT want to risk losing my photos, or things like that, to include, since the rebuild my Outlook .pst was not saved, so I just noticed that there are no contacts on my computer.
What should I do?  I have been able to back up my iPhone the best I can tell according to iTunes, but when I try to sync that is when I get the above messages.
    Thank you,
    Miam

iCloud Backup is for your iPad, not for your computer.
Whatever you bought from iTunes is yours forever and can be downloaded as many times as you want. This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Here is the procedure for your reference.
On a computer, launch iTunes. Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
"Sign in" using the Apple ID used to purchase your songs, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
Whatever you have that did not originate from iTunes will have to be obtained from whatever means you used to obtain it in the past.

  • Disappearing User Account WGM

    Hi Everyone,
First post here for me! I have never seen something quite as odd as what happened to me this morning, and thus I feel I need some help to discover the cause of this event.
I logged in to Workgroup Manager, creating a new open directory account for a user, and logged out.
A few mins. later I learn that one of our other users was no longer able to access their mail. I logged back into WGM to look up the account for the person that could not log in, and to my surprise, it was GONE!
I could find no trace of this account. So after retrieving a tarball of all the previous mail for this account, I remade the account with the same UID and then I could, of course, access all the mail again.
The question is this has anyone ever seen a user account just disappear without intentionally deleting it? I know that I did not delete this account carelessly or something like that. It just stopped showing up in WGM and the user was no longer able to log in.
I'd love to hear if anyone else has run into this before or if you might have an idea as to the cause.
    Thanks!!!
    G3,4,&,5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   this was on a Xserve Running 10.4.6

When an account is deleted in WGM, the user's DB entry remains in the cyrus DB. Did you check to see if the DB entry was still there (cyradm or SirAdmin).
The reason I ask... if the DB entry was there, then the account definitely existed on the server but if the DB entry did not exist then the account 'may' have existed in WGM but never received mail and or was never checked with a client. But you did say that you had pulled old mail from a tarball...
If the account was gone in WGM and the /var/spool/imap user folder was gone, BUT the Cyrus DB entry was g one- then it sounds like a normal WGM delete which deletes the user, their imap folder, but leaves the DB entry.

  • Problem to change account image when firmware password is enabled.

Someone else is having trouble to change the user account image when the firmware password is enabled on a Macbook Pro mid-2009 with OS X 10.7.2 and 10.7.3?

Yep, another one of those 10 million threads on WiFi...
I have a feeling you are using WEP encryption. You can either stick with this, or if your router allows it, switch to the better, more secure encryption methods WPA or WPA2.
The touch with WEP encryption is a little finicky. To get it to work reliably, I suggest you do the following:
    1. set your encryption level to 128 bit.
    2. enter your password into the router and write down the resulting hex key
    3. on your touch, tap on the blue > next to the network name and then tap on Forget Network
    4. tap on Other Network, enter your network name, tap on security settings and make sure you have WEP checked off
    5. on the Enter your Password screen, type in your hex key
    6. you should be connected to your network. Tap the blue > again to make sure you have an IP address other than 169.x.x.x.
Or, setup WPA or WPA2 encryption (select the PSK, personal, serverless edition on your router) and choose a suitably complex 8 character or more password. You can include capitals, special characters, and numbers. You can then use this password with all of your other wireless devices.

  • Running Win7 and ITunes 10.6 - loaded all my old CD's in one user acct. I want to share these with all other users on the machine without reloading the CD's and without having to make copies of their disk images, if possible. Also, want them on my WinXP

Running ITunes 10.6, on a Win7 Home Premium SP1. Just loaded about thirty of my favorite CD's on my user account.
I would like to be able to make all of them available to my other family members in their accounts on my machine, without needing to reload them all and without having to store their disk images multiple times. Can this be done, and if so, how?
And can I copy the contents of a folder across to my wife's WinXP SP3 machine, and have them made available to each of us in our login accts on that machine?
(There are three of us, plus an admin and a backup admin account, on each.)
I will be really grateful if someone can help me do this for my family members, as we have shared the music on these CD's over the years, and I would like to make them available on the desktop for each of us.
Also, I'd like to be able to load them, or a subset of them, to my wife and son's IPods. Any Tips, Traps or Tweaks for that process, as well?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Not sure about the OS level for the IPods. I am doing this for my wife and son, using an account here created for my son, which he shares with me for support purposes. But I do know they both have IPods, and our PC's and their OS's were described above.

You can move the iTunes folder to a separate drive on your pc an then configure each account to use this drive / folder as iTunes library ... The problem is, that iTunes by default stores everything in your personal music folder which is separate for each user account in windows (and by default is on "C" drive).
I create a separate partition on every pc/laptop (and map a drive name) where I store music, videos and other mass data. This will also keep the "C" drive small, which is backed up from time to time and so my backup is also small.

  • Restore a user account backed up by time machine to a replacement macbook?

I've searched the forum without finding an answer to this situation, so here's my question:
I setup Time Machine to only backup a teacher's user account on her MacBook because the capacity of the external drive used for her backup was not very large. I excluded all files on the drive, with the exception of her user's home directory. *Her laptop was stolen.*
I just received a replacement laptop, which is the same model, but it is running 10.6.2. The stolen MacBook was running 10.5.8. During initial setup, I attached the drive and attempted to "Restore from TIme Machine backup," but it would not recognize the time machine backup on the attached drive. I also tried renaming the computer to match the name of the stolen MacBook, and tried restoring using the Migration Assistant, which was also unsuccessful.
*Is there anyway that I will be able to restore her user account from the Time Machine backup to her new MacBook?* It doesn't matter if reinstalling 10.5 is the answer, or if I need some 3rd-party software. Is there detailed Time Machine documentation that covers this type of scenario? If there is, I haven't been able to find it.
I also considered allowing the new MacBook to consider the external drive that has the stolen MacBook's backup as its own Time Machine backup (as automatically prompted when plugging the drive into the new MacBook), but I didn't want to futz around and mess things up.
Thank you in advance for helpful replies!

this is because you excluded all the other things from backups. this precludes any kind of automated migration.
*Is there anyway that I will be able to restore her user account from the Time Machine backup to her new MacBook?*
yes, it's possible but you'll have to do it manually. First, make sure that there is no account by the same name already exists on the new mac. this is important.
next, control-click on TM in the dock and select "browse other TM disks". this will let you browse the old TM backups. in the backups select the old home directory in /Users. click on the "gears" action button in the toolbar and select "restore to". choose to restore to the folder /users on your main hard drive. once the restore is complete go to system preferences->accounts and create an account with the same short user name as the name of the home directory you just restored. it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes".

  • Remove user account and archive as disk image error

Hi guys, I'm having some troubles removing a user from a MacBook running 10.6.6. I want to remove the user and archive their home folder as a disk image (in case I ever need to get access to some of their files in the future). I know it's a fairly straightforward process, I've done it before. I log in as admin, go to system preferences, accounts and then select the account and press the "-" button to remove it. I select the "Save home folder in a disk image" option, and click okay, but all I get is the following error message -
"Unable to delete the user account xxxxx
An error occurred while backing up the user's home folder."
No details as to the error, but the console logs give me this info:
    7/02/11 5:28:46 PM [0x0-0x52052].com.apple.systempreferences[756]
    2011-02-07 17:28:46.418 writeconfig[763:903] DIHLDiskImageCreate failed: 999 (options:{
I've done this many times before, without a hitch - this one is really giving me grief, so any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Matt

Does Disk Utility give your hard drive a clean bill of health?
In any case, I wouldn't try to archive a user's data this way anyway. Far too often I have seen disk images fail to mount with the "no mountable filesystems" error, leaving all the data inside of them irretrievable. It's a much better idea to archive the data into a disk image, and then test that the image correctly mounts, before deleting the user account.
This Terminal command will make a disk image of the user john's home folder and save it in /Users/Shared:
sudo hdiutil create -srcfolder ~john /Users/Shared/john.dmg

  • I have two libraries on the same computer but different logins, there is my user account for the computer and then there is my grandma's, how do i get my music without having to resync on both libraries?

this computer has two logins, my grandma's (which is the administrator) and mine, itunes is on both logins but on my login i have some music there and hers i have my other music.. i want to be able to redownload my music on my ipod touch with out having to resync back and forth between libraries.. how do i combine the libraries because if i go with one or the other i lose my music i have purchased, on both libaries the music belongs to me not my grandma,
Also, a few weeks ago, I loaned the IPOD to somebody and they told me that evidently the IPOD had been hacked and that it had lost all the music.  When I got it back, I re-synced it and got some of the music back.  After talking to other people, I now suspect that my "friend" tried to do something he wasn't suppose to to and the IPOD shut down or that he was trying to create an Apple ID of his own without paying for it.  Now that I have it back, I just want to get the music back that I paid for that is already associated with my ID and that is in my two libraries.  I can see them in there (on the computer), I just can't access them to download  them on the IPOD.  Can you help?

There are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above:
Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. If you've had no success with this you can have a look through the guide on this page: Loading songs onto iPod automatically
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
You can read about Windows user accounts here: Using Windows XP User Accounts

  • How to use migration assistant without creating dual user accounts

I want to use migration assistant to transfer apps, software & files on my macbook pro to my new macbook air. How can I do this without creating two user accounts for myself on the m-book air -- my account from the m-book pro & the one that the air makes me create as soon as I do start-up? Can I just use the same name & password for both? or will that make things go badly awry?
    Thanks!

If you have not booted the MBA for the first time and gone through the Setup Assistant, then I would use the Setup Assistant to make the transfer before you even create another user account. However, if you've already created the new user account on the MBA, then create a new admine one with a different username than the account you will migrate. Log into this new account, delete the first account you made, then use Migration Assistant to transfer your account from the MBP.

  • How do i delete the old users account on my second hand imac g5 without the origonal disc

im new to imacs and not sure how to delete the old users account without the origonal disc

First of all, you need to make sure your current user account (the one you intend to keep) is an administrator account (not standard).
Go to System Preferences Accounts pane.  Click the lock, if it's locked, and enter your authorization, to unlock.
In the sidebar, you will see the list of user accounts.  To delete a user account, select it on the list and click the minus sign.
