User accounts corrupted - how to fix
So my Mac locked up the other day when the babysitter decided to put it to sleep. The fan was on full and it was unresponsive. I force-powered it off and then on again. When it came back, almost everything was fine except for my wife's account. It had switched to sort of my son's account. What I mean is that my son is running the restricted finder, and when my wife logged in, it was using the restricted finder and the "My Applications" folders, etc. were pointing to my son's directories. Everything else was normal, so when you select full finder, it's running from my wife's account (has her desktop files, etc.), but the dock was still the messed up one. Going into Accounts as me, it shows her as an admin and doesn't show that she is running the restricted finder.
I'm quite comfortable with Unix sys admin activities, but OS-X doesn't run things the same way as normal Unix systems. Can anybody help me figure out what's gotten messed up and how to fix?
Thanks.
Andrew
With a full or otherwise marginalized hard disk drive with possible damages
to files or directory (or corruption, lost data, or files lost due to meddling) the
advice to make a full backup of the computer's contents to an external HDD
in a suitable enclosure for use with your computer, is the best first step to
not loose any more data. Clone utilities help do this while retaining what is
left of the correct and original file structure which would be otherwise lost.
For other ideas about user accounts and their place in OS X systems, you
can take a look at how they work and how the topic is addressed in these
selected web page links. User accounts are the basis of keeping a system
secure and help keep the contents organized and protected. If someone
who has no business in an Admin account had this access, they could be
responsible for a considerable degree of damage. And the blame does not
necessarily fall on the last person to unknowingly mess it up. The owner
has to be accountable for learning how to best protect their investment and
the contents of the computer, and other users, from loss or harm.

To take charge of security and account management when more than one
person uses a computer (or even just one admin-owner account user) is a
preventative action. The later OS X systems are even more elaborately made
and there are some very in-depth articles and documents for management of
system accounts, user access, security and so on, for Leopard. These are
often pro-level documents and some of them are 3MB downloads.
In the meantime, damage control requires a different path be taken to recover
from the problems at hand; while looking into how to prevent them.

Application crashes, but not in new user account. How to fix?
Like many others on the forum, I have experienced frequent crashes in SL in Mail, Safari, Powerpoint, and other applications, particularly when adding an attachment to an email message or inserting an image file in a presentation slide. Did all the usual maintenance things such as verifying and repairing permissions, reinstalling SL, trashing virus protection apps, etc. Crashes persisted. However, I created a new user account and when working in that account the crashes do not occur.
What does this suggest about the nature of the problem and how do I resolve it, preferably without migrating all my files over to the new user account.
Many thanks.Open Directory Utility. You will find it in Applications/Utilities.
Click the lock to make changes and enter your admin password.
Go to the menu bar: Edit > Enable root user.
Follow the instuctions to create the System Administrator (Root) user.
Do not use the same password that a regular user already has. Do not use a trivial password.
Log out the current user.
In the log in window, enter root as the user name.
Enter the password that you just created.
You now have access to all User accounts, folders and files. Move the files you need from the old account to the working one. For example move the contents of your old Documents folder to the new Documents folder. This is easiest if you open two Finder windows and place them side by side. repeat this for the other folders in your old user space with one exception. *Do not* copy the contents of the Library folder.
There are a couple of things in the Library folder that you probably do want. To retrieve your email, copy the contents of the Mail folder. If you have installed fonts in your user space copy those too.
Let your new Library manage itself from then on. Your apps will place preference files etc in the appropriate folders as they are launched.
You should also give the working account admin priviliges. (System Preferences > Accounts)
Be very careful whilst logged in as root. The main Library and System folders are no longer protected and nothing requires a further password entry. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
When you are finished log back in to the working account and open Directory Utility once more.
Go to Edit > Disable root user.
Keep the old user account on the drive for a while until you are sure everything is working correctly and nothing is missing. -

User Account corruption? fix?
MBP 2.16, 15", 2G RAM, Leopard
I added iWorks '08 and had the same problems that others had. An Apple Software Update came out early this morning. Updated but iW 08 still does not work. I uninstalled iW with AppZapper and re-installed but same problem - starts and "unexpectedly quits before it opens.
SWITCHED ACCOUNTS and it Works on the other account. This tells me that there is a problem with my main user account.
Any idea on where to look or what to do User account. This is a user account that I have used since 10.2 and have lots of email as well as secure web accounts that I don't wish to start changing or moving.I don't know what Dreamhost is, but it might be your keychain item is bad for that site. User Account corrupted by Snow Leopard install?
I installed Snow Leopard on my 24-inch iMac last evening from a Family Pack DVD.
Within three minutes of starting the install, my computer locked up. Waited about an hour to make sure it was really crashed vs. working slow. Finally admitted defeat and restarted the computer. At that time, the screen told me it found an install in progress -- did I want to recover it? My setting etc. would not be affected. I said yes.
The install completed seemingly like a dream.
However, the computer now takes an average of three minutes to complete any task. And by "complete any task" I mean even getting a pulldown menu to appear. It's as if the computer freezes up for three minutes, then unfreezes for five seconds, then freezes again.
What I have tried: I saw a tip somewhere that I should determine whether the whole system/computer is affected or only a specific user account. My computer has only one user account -- mine -- with all the admin privileges, etc. I was able to log on as a guest and everything seems to work beautifully and quickly. Of course, I can't access any of my files or settings from the guest account.
So, it APPEARS that my user account is corrupted somehow. It's hard to imagine trying to work on that from inside the account itself, since it operates in extreme slow motion and is de facto frozen.
What should I do? Do I create a new user account that is admin and delete the old? How do I access my files, settings, etc.?
I don't THINK I need to uninstall Snow Leopard or reinstall it because the guest account seems completely fine.
One other bit of info that may help a knowledgeable person puzzle through this with me: During the Snow Leopard installation, it gave me some pop-up questions concerning duplicate files -- maybe 30 or so -- that were all photos inside iPhoto. (I knew I had a couple dozen photos that I had inadvertently put on the computer twice, but they have resided there for a long time without creating problems. It asked me if I wanted to keep the duplicates or replace them with the originals, and I said "replace" -- it asked me that for each photo. Once the install was finished, there was a stack of photo icons on my desktop screen, piled on top of each other like a deck of cards -- they are the duplicate photos. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem or not. Again, it's pretty much impossible to work inside that user account at this point so I'm not sure that's relevant.
Anyway, I am not a technical person and would sure appreciate advice.
By the way, because of these problems, I have not tried to install my family pack upgrade on my other iMac -- it is running "old" Leopard and I think I'll definitely leave it as is. Would you folks agree that's wise at this stage?
Thanks again.hpaton wrote:
R C-R, thanks, I did start up in safe mode and went back into my old user account, the one that is giving me all the trouble. It was very slightly faster. I was able to start up a couple programs and when inside those programs the computer seemed to run pretty fast. However, anything on the desktop or the dock still operates in the frozen-for-three-minutes-OK-for-five-seconds-frozen-for-three-minutes pattern.
In any case, HOLY COW I THINK I FOUND A PROBLEM. Remember that stack of photo icons I told you got placed on my desktop after Snow Leopard installation? I thought it was perhaps 30 photos ... wrong! It is a card stack of all 2,900 photos I have on my computer. (I was able to see this by going into the hard drive icon then drilling down on the desktop, and there was just an endless ocean of photo files on display there.) I presume this is what is crippling my desktop/finder function?
yes, definitely. as I said, having a lot of pics on the desktop will make finder keel over because it has to render all of them. you should try moving them to a separate folder.
log into your account, start terminal and run the following command 9copy and paste please)
mkdir ~/pics; mv ~/desktop/* ~/pics
wait for it to finish. it will move everything from your desktop folder to the folder pics at the top level of your home directory. nothing will be deleted by this so if something is really missing from iphoto you should be able to recover it later.
Presuming this is THE problem, what do I do? I can't tell whether I should try to delete all of those photos off of the desktop or do something else. I WAS able to open iPhoto and it looked like all my photos were still in there, BUT if I double click on any of them to enlarge them or try to edit them, I can't. That's all I know at this point -- don't know if that represents the entire problem, but there is no doubt I have a major issue around iPhoto and my photo files. How do I resolve that without losing my pics?

OS 10.4.2 User account corrupt?
G5 dual 2.7 Ghz - OS 10.4.2
We had a power supply die during use.
The supply has been replaced and I'm testing the mac now.
The user account ( user A ) that was open when the Mac died will not log in.
The other pre existing accounts log in fine.
When I try to login to "user A"
- Enter name and password.
- The login screen disappears and all I see is the desktop background.
No Menus, No dock, No hard drive icon.
I'm unable to do anything at this point but force a shut down with the power button.
1) I deleted the "user A" account and chose to save its home folder info to the deleted users folder.
2) I created a new "user A" account, same name and password as before.
- but the same login issue occurs.
3) I can create a new user account with a different name and all is well.
Any suggestions on how I can create User A's account as it was before?Welcome To Discussions BRieg!
Do you want to recover files from the corrupt deleted account?
Instructions here Mac OS X: How to recover a home folder (directory).
But there is always the possibility, that you may reintroduce whatever is corrupt, so be very selective in what you retrieve.
After you have the new account configured to your liking, you can then change the Short Name of the Home folder, with this Change Shortname - The Easy Way.
Good Luck!

Apple mail crashes on start-up: user account corrupt?

I have installed all the latest software updates, but my Mail keeps crashing. I have cleaned (reset) plist and emptied and cleaned the address book, but the problem persists. I have created a new user account and Mail works fine for that account. I think that I have a corrupt user account. Is there anyway to clean a user account without losing all my doc's etc?

OKHi CSTav
Thank you for your question.
By my understand, you delete a user account and his mailbox, now you want to restore it. If that, you can refer to the following step;
You download a tool which is ADRecycleBin.exe
In Powershell ,you can use Import-Module ActiveDirectory import AD module.
You can use Get-ADForest –Current loggedonuser to check forest function level whether it is 2008R2 or higher, if not ,please use
Set-ADForestMode to promote forest function level .
Then you can use Enable-ADOptionalFeature ‘Recycle Bin Feature’ –Scope ForestConfigurationSet -Target abc.com(abc.com is domain name) then you can choose
Yes to start Recycle Bin Feature function.
Run ADRecycleBin.exe with administrator permission, then you choose “Users and Computers” and “Groups” .then you click “Load Deleted Objects”.
In ADRecycleBin by Overall Solution Inc. you will find some uses who was deleted on the left, you can choose some users you want to restore ,then you can click “Restore checked Objects”
When Restore Summary remind “success restored ”,you can check your AD user accounts and mailbox account.

hi im a pretty new mac user been using for maybe 3 months now and so far not so good
I think i have now come to terms that my main user accout is so corrupted its becoming really irritating trying to use
Things like
Im creating a new website and when i view it in safari (on main user account) its like the CSS sheet is all wrong, yet on every other computer and on my other account its totally fine
Things I've downloaded in safari keep randomly deleting themselves from the list (although it deletes back to a certain date, this could be the date it became corrupt)
Textedit no longer opens (but opens fine on other account)
Preview no longer opens (but opens fine on other account)
I called Apple a while back and someone told me to re-install Lion which i did, but it never worked i then awaited a phone call back which i never got that was about 4 weeks ago i tried to let it go but more and more faults keep appearing .
Am i out of luck and will have to stop using that account or is their anyway to "restore" it without loosing all my files. I suppose if the worst came to the worst i could just kee it for my files and use a new user account, or would that eventually become corrupt too ?

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up. Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?
This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
Mac style = Volname:foldername: -
Crash on startup - limited to user account, but how?
Hello,
I've set up a new user account on my MacBook (OS 10.4.11) by importing the user folder from another computer using Migration Assistant. This computer has iPhoto 6 installed and it works fine in the other user accounts. However, in this new user account it "quits unexpectedly" about two seconds after it finishes its startup routine. I'll paste a crash report below.
Since the problem is limited to this user account, I immediately deleted the iPhoto preference file, but that didn't help; then I temporarily removed the entire Preferences folder; then the entire Library folder; and just for the heck of it, the entire Documents folder. I also removed the Pictures folder and let iPhoto create a new library, but it still crashes in the same way. I've also repaired disk permissions and reinstalled iPhoto from the system CD that came with the computer.
After all of this, I created another new user account, without importing any data, and iPhoto works fine there. So the problem still seems to be limited to this account, even though I've systematically eliminated everything I could think of that would cause the problem. Do you have any ideas?
Thanks,
-Arlo

Xperia Z2: 10 Problems Users Have, and How to Fix Them
10 annoying issues with the Sony Xperia Z2, and how to fix them
http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/xperia-z2-problems/
I found this article by @digitaltrends on Twitter as I'm researching the Sony Xperia Z2. I hope these issues have been address, especially WiFi dropping. I'm interested in the Z2 because of the Noise Canceling feature, now I will have to do more research to find out which phone is more stable (even though it's a software thing).
Can anyone with xperince with Z1, Z2, Z3 which they feel is the most stable for daily usage and heavy videoing projects? Realiability being the key?I have the Z1 and have no issues at all - I find that article a load of tosh, How can something be an issue if the owner hasn't read the manual and as an example turned on Tap to wake or are using a 3rd party charger and wonder why charging takes a long time - These are not issues with the phone merely issues with the owner
