User accounts disappeared from Mac Server
My company uses a Mac Server OS X v10.7.5 which we store all our files on and staff connect to it using a mapped drive (B:). This afternoon we stopped being able to connect, we rebooted the server like we normally do, however, when it came back online all of the user accounts have disappeared leaving only our admin account!
All of our files and folders are still there, it's just the user accounts used for accessing these folders that seem to have disappeared.
Coincidently, the + sign under the Users section is greyed out in server.app so I'm having to use Workgroup Manager to add new users. I've tried doing this for myself and given my user account access to the folders that I need however, when I try to map the B: it doesn't recognise my server credentials any more.
Basically, at the moment, no one can access any files or folders so I'm really hoping that someone has an answer on how to either restore the missing user accounts (if that's possible) or how to set up the user accounts so that we can access the files again.

From what I found out it was to do with corrupted Open Directory file, if you've previously archived the Open Directory (through Server Admin) you can restore a previous version or, as we had to do, copied all the server files to an external hard drive and restore from Time Machine, we did it for a point a week ago when it was working and all the user profiles came back.
If you don't already know how to do that, restart the server but hold down the cmd and R (command key and R key) at the same time until it gives you a screen with a list of restore options, select Restore from Time Machine Backup and select a date from a few days ago or whenever you knew it was working fine, depending on the size of the files on your server it can take a couple of hours to do this. Then copy the files from the hard drive back on to the server so youy have the latest versions again.
After it had done this all the user profiles were restored with passwords and groups etc..., if you do remove and restore the files then you may need to re-do any file access permissions but other than that it should be back to how it was before.

.mac account disappears from Mac mail
Often I will go to my Mail app and the .Mac Account is no longer displayed. If I quit mail and reopen, it and its folders stored there at .Mac will be displayed.
My wife has a sub-account on our MM family pack subscription and had this issue: occasionally mail on her iPhone would appear briefly in the iPhone inbox, then disappear from the list. It never showed up in Mail.app at all. (I have the master account on this family pack and haven't had this issue… knock on wood.)
I was also a recipient on some of those mails -- but if I forwarded them to her she still didn't get them. I had to copy the text out of the messages and paste into a new mail. That worked. So it seems there's something in the mail header (perhaps?) that causes this… yet the mails have not all been from the same person / address. In fact, mail from person "A" might do this disappearing thing today, yet mail from the same person "A" might work fine tomorrow. It's that sort of multi-variable, intermittent problem that's very hard to pin down.
I tried changing her password -- to guarantee that only her known clients were logging in (no lurking POP mail readers that she'd forgotten about). No effect. Then I tried turning off her junk filters, both local and online at MobileMe (thinking maybe some rule was out of control -- deleting random messages, rather than filing them as junk). No effect (other than a lot of complaints from her about junk in her inbox, of course).
Finally, she suggested that maybe it had to do with MM push services -- since it only happens on the iPhone, not on her Mac. We turned off push on her iPhone and voila! It seems to have fixed the issue.
I haven't found anyone else who's connected this with data push on the iPhone. I'd be interested if other folks who try this as a solution would see if it works for them and post results here. -
How do I transfer files from one user account on the mac mini to another user account?
I had to set up a new user account for my son. I need to transfer files from his old user account and from my user account to his new user account on the mac mini. How do I do this?
Move them to /Users/Shared/ and then into the new account.

.mac account disappeared from my iPhone
Two odd things happened this past week - maybe at the same time, although I can't be sure.
1) My .mac account disappeared from my iPhone. My POP3 account remains.
2) On my laptop, in Apple Mail, three new mailboxes for the .mac account suddenly appeared under "On My Mac": Deleted, Junk and Sent. They never used to be under "On My Mac", so I'm wondering if this is somehow related to the .mac account disappearing from my iPhone.
I still get mail to the .mac account on my laptop, and it still shows up online when I go to the .mac website.
Should I just go ahead and try to add the .mac account back onto my iPhone or is this likely something more complicated?Hello, did you resolve this? It's happening to my .Mac/ iPhone now. I've only recently set up my .mac account, and it's now disappeared off the iPhone twice in the 2 days I've had the email account.

Email disappeared from Mac Mail.
Hello. Email has disappeared from Mac Mail. Running last updated Mavericks. I went back in the time machine settings to revert to the day before the mail disappeared, and each time I go in there, I can see the mail showing up. Except, when I go to revert, nothing transfers back into the account. Any advice on what is going on and how to fix it? Years of mail are now "gone."
Okay, there is definitely an error message coming up in the log. I only selected a few messages from 2008 to restore. I selected just one of the error log messages I received (essentially one for each email it tried to restore). Thanks for all your help. As an aside, if it helps you to respond, I've just started a computer science degree, so I'm starting to feel my way around this stuff, but have a good cursory understanding. Not to say that your directions aren't just succinct and perfectly laid out!

Exchange Archive folder disappears from Mac Mail (Mavericks)
My Exchange 2013 Archive mailbox folder keeps disappearing from Mac Mail (Mavericks). When it does, the mailbox/folder shows 0 messages and 0 size in the Account info box. To temporarily solve the problem, I disable the account, quit mail, and reenable the account. Then the Archive folder/mailbox reappears. This happens several times per day. By the way, the folder is still visible on Outlook Web Access and through the Outlook client. It is simply invisible to Mac Mail. Does anyone know how to solve that?
Well, somehow, it disappeared after 10.8.2. and the following fixes which had no numbers.
Mail startet and told me, that Mailbox is somehow adapted and now everything works fine.

Switching iCloud User accounts on same MAC
When I go to sign out of current iCloud user account it states "Do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud contacts on this MAC?" then it states "If you dont keep a copy, iCloud contacts will be deleted from this MAC but still be available on other devices using iCloud.
My question/concern would be, since we have multiple user accounts on this MAC, it shows that my wife is signed in and the contacts list is from her devices, if I sign her out to sign in with my Apple ID, when she goes to her user account, will her contacts be deleted? If they are deleted, can then she sign out then sign in to have her stuff re-synched to her account with out showing on my account?... , if I sign her out to sign in with my Apple ID, when she goes to her user account, will her contacts be deleted?
They will remain in iCloud, and will be restored when she signs in again.
You can erase them from the Mac any time, but it's a good idea to retain your own copy should iCloud become inaccessible for whatever reason. -
How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive? Time Machine was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.
Thanks. I will try going through TM. Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive. Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means. It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility. Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it. Will look into

I have several user accounts on the mac, I would suspect that when I open a terminal window I can drill down to /usr/bin/passwd. I tried cat passwd, I saw a lot of gibberish, I tried emacs same results, Does mac os 10.6 store it's user accounts in the passwd file?
No. They're in /var/db/dslocal/indices/Default/index. What you found is an UNIX executable for setting account passwords, not a storage location.

Calendars and accounts disappeared from ical
All of my calendars and accounts disappeared from the calendar app on my macbook pro. They still exist because I can see them on my phone (icloud calendar) but not on my macbook pro. The app wont even let me add back in my icloud account. Any ideas?

ICloud account disappears from Mail preferences
In Mail preferences my iCloud account didn't seem to be working so I deleted it, logged into iCloud, selected 'Mail and Notes' and the Mail account was recreated. After signing out of iCloud the account disappeared from Mail preferences. Why?
So, then, do you recommend that I remain "signed in" to iCloud all the time on both my desktop and my laptop so that the iCloud account always appears in the Mail application? Or should I "sign in" to iCloud periodically to see if I have mail in my iCloud account or, alternatively, access mail in the iCloud account through iCloud.com?
The old MobileMe mail account was always present in the Mail application unlike the iCloud mail account. -

Yes, just plug it in to the computer, when iTunes is open in the second user account and you will be asked if you want to change the the sync settings on your mobile device. -
