User CALs for server 2012

We are planning to buy a license windows server 2012 to be used as a server of our database application system (HMIS) in our LAN to be accessed by approximately 90 users/computers. We were asked by the vendor what CAL are we going to buy. I would like to
know if it is obligatory to buy CAL or optional only in our case.
We are going to buy essentials or datacenter version.
Thanks

CAL is an issue of Standard and Datacenter editions. No CALs are needed for Foundation and Essentials as these are bound to 15 and 25 clients, respectively. (Read about the limits in Technet.)
Whenever you as a client use server processes, you will need at least one CAL. For RDS you will need additional license for remote access. (Two administrative remote accesses are free exception.)
You do not need CAL for web (however there are exceptions)
There are at least two approaches to license policy which depend on how server(s) are used. Generally this means that you can use licensing per server or per user.
Read please corresponding articles in Technet and download licensing guides. There may be differences for retail, OEM,...etc
Take this short explanation as the starting point for your study. I cannot describe all aspects of licensing as this takes larger space than forum is to be used.

Thanks. But can we use server 2012 essentials/datacenter without buying CAL?

  • How to specify RD USER cal for particular session host server on a licensing server.

    Hello,
I have 25 user cal license which I want to deploy to my 5 session host servers (5 user cal for each host)
I got 1 licensing server, where I have installed these licenses and pointed all other servers to it.
but I dont see any option to reserve 5 for each host. (4 win  2008R2, 1 win 2003 separate to each other no session host)
    Thanks

I would always have two licence servers for resilience.

  • Need help with recomendations on licenses for Server 2012 Std R2

I have a client who wants to purchase a server from me. I can buy the parts and assemble the system no problem. But I'm a newbie when it comes to user CALs or device CALs. The company will be having about 50 computers connecting to it. I'm assuming they'll
just be using the standard user/password domain login.
What else would I need to purchase in addition to the OS?
What kind of features does the vanilla server OS give you? Can 50 computers connect to just the OS alone? I've seen places that have a 1 user CAL for $36. Do I need 50 of these? If I don't purchase them right away, could my client still connect their computers
    to the server?
    mr.t

    Hello,
Licensing Windows Server 2012 comes in four different flavours foundation, essentials, standard and datacenter.
Your client is wanting connect 50 users which really does rule out two of those flavours.
Essentials is ruled out because it is an OEM operating system and only supports up to 15 users and has limited functionality
Foundation is rules out because it only supports up to 25 users and has limited functionality
This leaves us with two Windows Server 2012 flavours you can purchase Standard or Datacenter.  They both have exactly the same functionality; the difference is the virtualisation
rights.  With standard one license covers two physical processors and supports two virtual machines, if you need more virtual machines then you would have to buy another standard license and giving the right to four virtual machines for example.  Then
for datacenter license covers two physical processors and covers you for an unlimited amount of virtual operating systems.
    To make this hopefully easier:
    1 x standard license covers = 2 x physical processors – 2 x virtual operating systems environments
1x datacenter license covers = 2 x physical processors – unlimited virtual operating environments
Both Standard and Datacenter come with Full functionality
Meaning standard licensing is really for no or very limited virtual environments, then if you are looking in to a virtual environment Datacenter is the way to go.
On regards to CALS are required for every user or device accessing the server.  They/you will need to decide whether or not you go for Device or user CALs.  User CAL
is more expensive but it gives companies a lot more flexible if the users are running more than one device for example if they support a bring your own device strategy.  Although there are different types of CALS depending on what the customer will be
    looking to use and access.
Also can your user still connect to the server: technically speaking yes, CALS are not like license keys you cannot activate them it is effectively a piece of
paper to say you have purchased X amount CALS and your compliant to allow your users to connect. So you can connect with out purchasing but you will not be compliant from a licensing standpoint.
Hope this helps to some degree!
    Cheers,
    Harry

  • Coldfusion support for Server 2012

When are installers going to be made avaliable for Server 2012 for Cold Fusion?.
Adobe have offically said that installers for windows 8 are 3-5  months away as of September 22nd, 2012 but we havent heard anything about Server 2012?
Server 2012 was released to MSDN on the 4th of Sepetember. 4 Months seems a long time to wait with no word on installers or support for CF on Server 2012. Are you telling me Adobe doesnt have a MSDN account and only got access to Server 2012 at the same time as the generaly public?

Unfortunately we are all paying the price for Oracle deferring the end of life of Java 6 from November to Feb. It sounded like Adobe were going roll all this stuff into their patch to add Java 7 support to CF9 and CF10, which they would have needed to get done by Nov. However now it seems they've slacked off and have left it to the last minute. I guess the good news is that this should all be done within the next month or so. The bad news is... it won't give us much chance to test the new release between when Adobe patch CF and before the Java 6 EOL.

  • MS Security Essentials for Server 2012 R2

I've had MS Security Essentials installed on my Server 2008 R2 Foundation, but now that I've upgraded to 2012 R2 Foundation, MS Security Essentials won't install. It gives an error message saying that it won't run on this computer.
I've searched for a replacement, but my searches yield ONLY results for Server 2012 R2 Essentials, and NOT Security Essentials.  Is there a replacement for MS Security Essentials, and if so, how/where can I find it???

    Hi,
I agree with Ed that Microsoft Security Essentials is designed for client machines.
I have seen forum threads that indicating it is running well on Windows 2008 machines, still, it is not supported.

  • Use one profile for all user profiles in Server 2012 R2

    Hi
I am setting up an Windows Server 2012 R2 Template on VMware.
I will do som changes with the local admin user, and want all user that will log in to servers made from this Template, get the user profile I have set up for the admin account.
    How to I do that?
    Regards
    StigKSand

the way I used to do this was to create a new profile the way I wanted with any shortcuts applications etc installed. then I would create another user account on the PC and make it an admin.
reboot the pc to ensure it hasn't got the pre-configured profile loaded and login with your newly created admin account.
then right click This PC in windows explorer and select properties, then select advanced system settings, and select user profiles on the advanced tab. You can then select the profile you made all the configuration to, and click copy and then select default
    profile.
this should then mean any new users who login get this default profile on this server.
hopefully that is what you were referring to.

  • How can I know if my CAL license is valid for server 2012

    Hi everyone,
I have a domain where all the server are  Windows Server 2008R2, Due to certain progams that are about to enter the organization I have to deploy several new servers that will run server 2012R2 and possibly upgrade a few existing ones to 2012R2 as well.
That is however not the problem.
I recently found out the remote desktop servers that run the RD licensing role, Don't serve windows server 2012, but if I deploy a new RDS with server 2012 R2 it can serve both my old 2008 R2 servers and my new 2012 R2 servers. First I'd like to know if
it's correct and if any of you have tried that in the past. Furtner, I need to know if the CAL license that's installed on my 2008 R2 server is valid for 2012R2 servers as well, is there a way to find that out?
    Hoping for a quick response.

    Hi David,
You are correct, a 2012 R2 server can license your 2008 R2 servers, but your 2008 R2 CALs will not work to license connections to 2012 R2. A good wiki here...

  • Licensing options for Server 2012 Standard Edition

    I am working a proposal to a new client. Currently they have a single physical server, and 15 workstations, connected to AD;
Server 2012 standard running hyper-V - evaluation (and not attached to the domain)
On it are two virtual machines -
Domain Controller 2008 32bit - license is activated.
    2nd server 2008 R2 64bit - evaluation  (attached to the domain)
If they purchase a 2012 Server Standard license, with 15 user cals, I should be able to activate the two unlicensed servers?
Mark Smed, NPA Network Support Technician [email protected] Northern Computer l Your trusted partner. Ph: 250.762.7753 Ext. 1803 www.northerncomputer.ca

...  If you make the host a domain controller and run Hyper-V you lose your "free" VM instances...
It is my understanding that you lose one of your VM instances, not both. I was led to believe that the purpose of this restriction is to prevent someone from getting a three-for-two deal on licenses, not to lock them out of guest privileges entirely.
but in you instance the host is not licensed and one of the vm's are not licensed so you still need to get a license for the host however you go about it.
This is not quite true as worded. It's true that you have to get a license for the host in general, because Windows Server licenses always apply to a specific piece of hardware, never to a virtual machine. However, it's not necessarily true that you have
to license the management operating system (I think the licensing document calls this the physical OSE, or something like that).
If you have purchased one license of Windows Server Standard 2012 or 2012 R2 non-OEM, then you are licensed to run a maximum of two virtual instances of that same server operating system version/edition or lower on a single host with up to 2 physical CPUs.
You are also allowed to run that same operating system version/edition or lower as the management operating system without purchasing an additional license as long as it runs nothing but Hyper-V Server and services needed manage/maintain its own virtual machines.
If you do anything else in the management OS that provides services to other systems (like ADDS), then one of the guest licensing privileges is lost to cover the management OS. Any OEM licensing may have its own restrictions.
For licensing questions, it is always best to contact an authorized Microsoft reseller and ask to speak to a licensing expert. They go through training specifically for this. The call is usually free. The fines for license violations most
certainly are not. "Read it on a forum" is not good audit defense.

  • Moving user profiles from Server 2012 with RDS services to User profile disks Server 2012R2

Hello i have a question about moving my C:\users profiles.
My current settings on the servers are:
    AD-Server 2012
    SQL-Server 2012
TS- server with RDS roles (RDwebacces, RDs broker, RD session host) 2012
everything about user profiles is now in C:\Users
My new settings for the server will be:
    AD-ActiveDirectory - server
    SQL-Server
TS1- RDS (RDwebacces, broker, RDS server group management) 2012R2 (I have enabeld userProfileDisks to Filesistem server)
    TS2- RDS(Session host) load balance 2012R2
TS3- RDS (Session host) load balance 2012
FileSistem - server ( here i will have on E: partition the new functionality UserProfileDisks) 2012R2
So is there a way to move profiles from TS - C:\Users to FileSistem - E:\UserProfileDisks
I am new to this so any idea wil be helpful.

    Hi,
If the UPD is configured on the server which holds existing user profiles, just select the option:
store all user settings and data inside the profile disk.
Since you are moving user profiles between different servers, then user profile contents need to be migrated manually.

I have boot, efi, sources, support, autorun, bootmgr, bootmgr.edi, and setup.
I have confirmed that the sxs folder is there.
I also just added WindowsSource=%DeployRoot%\Operating Systems\Windows Server 2012 R2 SERVERSTANDARDCORE x64\sources\sxs to my customsettings and updated the boot iso.  I am still receiving the errors.
One last bit of information I am able to get to the deployment share with the sxs folder in it from the reference machine I am creating but when I manually try to install .net 3.5 from roles and features to the share it fails. But if I copy the files local
    they work fine.
I seem to have permission issues with other subfolders also.

  • Getting Client Name in Remote Desktop Manager for Server 2012 R2

Remote Desktop Manager appears to have been replaced or moved in Server 2012 to Server Manager. It doesn't really matter to me where this is located, however I don't seem to have all of the features that were in Remote Desktop Manager (2008 R2). The biggest
one that I need is to be able to tell what computer each RDS user is logged in from. We use this quite often so we can remote into that users computer for troubleshooting.
Does anybody know how to obtain this information in Server 2012 R2? If it's not possible in Server Manager, can it be done with Powershell? A 3rd party application?
So far the only way I have been able to do this is if there is still a 2008 R2 server on the network. I can log into it and use Remote Desktop Manager to connect to the 2012 R2 server. Since a 2008 server can still obtain this information for a 2012 server
there must be a way to achieve this.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
In addition, the PSTerminalServices PowerShell Module might help.

You can run Get-TSSession in PowerShell.

As you see, the mbn command is added from the "WWANCFG.DLL" , there is a command "netsh add helper <dll name>"
I couldn't find the WWANCFG.dll on my windows server 2012 R2 box, how can I add/download/install/register this dll?
What are the dependencies of the WWANCFG.dll? are there any other dlls that need to e registered?
    Thanks for your help

  • Azure backup options for Server 2012 R2 Essentials

    Hello,
I have configured a new on-prem HP server for a very small (5 users) non-profit client. This is a single server environment, and they use Office 365 for email. I have already configured AD Sync between the two with dirsync. I have installed the Azure agent,
and imported the certificate, and I am ready to create a backup set.
This is my first experience with Cloud based server backup - I'm used to products like Backup Exec and tape media. What are my options for backing up this server? Can I only do file/folder backup, as it appears?
What would be best practice in this situation, as I need to back up the systems state as well? And then, how to restore it?
All I can think of would be to use Windows Server backup to create a backup of the server, then back that up - but it's so messy, I must be missing something.
    Thank you in advance!!

    Hi,
You may refer the following link for clear step-by-step procedure on Azure backup:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2014/05/01/configuring-microsoft-azure-online-backup-on-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials.aspx
As of now, you can only backup File & folders(Even entire drive) but you cannot perform System State backups with Azure Backup.
For System State backup, as you mentioned about using WSB and then backing it up to Azure Backup vault may be the only work-around as of now. However, you may vote and provide feedback for this feature in
    here.
