User created folders that default to read and write for everyone
Greetings,
We're running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5. We've had trouble with people trying to put files into folders that were created by a colleague because the folder created by the colleague is just read accessible to everyone else. Is there any way to make it so that folders created by certain employees default to read&write for everyone?
I would normally just reset everything so that all folders were r&w accessible to everyone, but we have some private data folders that cannot be made public.

Not trying to be smug, just that there is a hierarchy of privileges, how they take precedence over each other, and how they are inherited.
Also, if you post how exactly your shares are set up, who has access to what folders and shares, and what ACLS are set in addition to standard unix settings, that would help.

I cannot update from OS X 10.9.4 t0 10.9.5> Whenever I try I get the following message: File couldn't be installed error (513) and something about not having the proper permission. Under the Macintosh HD sharing and permissions settings I have customized the settings so that (Me) has read and write permission followed by the system with read and write permission, wheel and everyone have Read permissions.
I have no problems updating apps such as Adobe CC or iTunes but cannot update the operating system, can someone help me? Thanks.1. Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, go to Step 2.
If there's no change after taking this step, continue.
2. Back up all data before proceeding.

I've finished the programming of the process read and write for the PCI6025E, I can read and write the data now, I wanna synchronize both of the processes, writing the data into the card just after the reading from the card, and check the wave in the oscilloscope. when I use the SEC , it works, but when I changed to MSEC, the wave only come out for a few seconds, even if I bloc 60sec, and also the wave is not steady. why?
so now the problem is how could I write the data immediately which just read and it's for a long time I asked?

aiex4.cpp doesn't exist, as far as I can tell. I believe that while the examples were being named, the developer mis-numbered them and just skipped 4 :-S
At any rate, if you already have AI and AO working separately, and you have the I/O performance you application requires, then you may not need to add DMA to your driver. However, if you want to add DMA, it won't be very difficult. In essence, you would need mix code from the S and M Series examples. The S Series example aiex2.cpp shows two things: the few lines of code you need to add DMA objects (lines 70-78), and how to program the STC to use DMA (line 114). And aiex3.cpp from the M Series examples gives a clearer picture of how to control and read the DMA channel.

my itunes keeps asking me to set my permissions. they are set to read and write for all accounts, admin, everybody, etc. don't know why it won't let me download
Ever find a real solution to this? I just posted something similar - been having the issues ever since I started using the mac.
I have 5 mac accounts: 2 of those are admins.
After I installed every program I may possibly want, I redid all my user accounts (as I had been having a lot of permissions issues before that). My (admin) account downloads fine. Another admin account, set up exactly as mine, periodically gets prompted that it doesn't have the right to download.
To avoid duplication, I have a /common/music directory for all itunes accounts music. We have to periodically do a recursive permissions deal on the 2nd admin account so it can put music there, even though that directory is read/write for everyone. Apple's never been able to help me on this... -

I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and have always used a PC until now, which i used an external hard drive to use to copy files to. My mac does not let me write to this hard drive.
What do i have to do to be able to read and write to this hard drive on my MAC & PC?your drive is formatted NTFS. OS X can only read but not write to NTFS drives. you can reformat it FAT which is writable from both OS X and windows. (this will wipe the drive of course). However, FAT is an inferior format with a number of limitations. another option is to install macfuse and NTFS-3g on your mac

I am running Firefox 18 on Windows 7, all with latest updates. The Adobe Flash plugin (latest version) hits the disk with hundreds of reads and hundreds of writes each second. This seems to start as soon as cnn.com is loaded then as other sites are loaded it just gets worse. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Is it normal? If not normal, how can I can stop it?

Flash often causes issues with Firefox. From Flash 11.3 some Windows users were needing to disable Flash's ''protected mode''. Rather a longshot but it may be worth experimenting with the protected mode and trying turning it off.

How to burn read and write files on DVD
I would like to know how to burn DVDs (image files) with the Read and Write setting. I have changed the settings in Get Info for the image files to Read and Write for Owner, Group and Others and yet when I burn the DVD and try and copy the files back onto the hard drive (to test if it works or not) it won't allow me. When I check the Get Info it says Read and Write for owner (greyed out) and Read Only for Group and Others (greyed out too).
I have also tried to change the status of the blank DVD before adding files and after adding the files (but b4 the burn) to Read and Write, this works but then during the burn process the DVD or burner changes my settings to Read Only.
I am burning with Finder and have tried with Toast 10 Titanium. What am I doing wrong, or not doing at all?! I'm going loopy with frustration!Kiraly, I agree that the actual problem here might be something else, but as a side issue there seems to be a difference in the way permissions are handled when a file copy is made using Finder compared to when the copy is made using the cp copy in Terminal. At least in my Tiger system, Finder preserved the permission structure, though not the ownership, when it copied a file, whereas cp used the OS defaults.
I tried the following experiment:
From my test user account "t", I created a textfile named ReadWrite.txt, and gave it Read+Write permissions for Owner, Group, and Others. I then burned it using Finder to a DVD which I named PermissionTest, and then unchecked the "Ignore Ownership" box on PermissionTest.
The original ownership and permissions were preserved on the DVD, though of course you couldn't actually write to anything there:
xxG5-Computer:~ t$ ls -l /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
-rw-rw-rw- 1 t t 15 Sep 13 18:25 /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
I then copied the file from the DVD to the Desktop using Finder, and the permissions were preserved!

I then trashed the Finder copy of ReadWrite,txt on the desktop, and made a second copy from the DVD, but this time I used the cp command from Terminal instead of using Finder. This time the permissions were not preserved, but reverted to the OS default:

I then switched to a different user account "t1", and repeated the above with the same DVD, first copying the ReadWrite.txt file to the desktop using Finder, and then using cp. The ownership of the copied file changed from t to t1 in both cases, but the permission structure again was preserved in the Finder copy but not in the cp copy:

I got similar results when I tried copying a file with Read+Write permissions for all from a USB flash drive to the Desktop, again with the "Ignore Ownership" box unchecked. -
Can I save to memory sticks for read and write access?
I use M.S. Office for Mac to do my admin. I would be very grateful if anyone can help with my queries.
I want to save work to media that allows me read and write access. Saving to discs (of any type) does not allow any editing.
1. If I save to a memory stick will I be able to save and update my work when I want to?
Also;
2. Would a memory stick have to be formatted with to be suitable for Mac?
3.If the memory stick can be used for the purpose, I want to encrypt it; how would I do this please?
4. Would encrypting place a limit on the capacity of the memory stick that can be used, e.g. I have a choice, including 8Gb and 16Gb.
5. I have heard that passwords can be created by Mac; what is the method for doing this please?

I do not know what HFS+ is.
HFS+ is the Mac OS X file system. Hierarchical File System Plus (Plus as it used to be HFS, but then they improved it and said +)
By default a USB flash drive generally comes formatted with FAT (from the Microsoft MS-DOS days, but is a universal format - it might come with FAT32 or exFAT as well - still from Microsoft). Mac OS X can read/write these, HOWEVER, its FileVault whole disk encryption is only designed to work with HFS+, which is why I mentioned it.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility can be used to reformat a disk, USB Flash drive, etc... NOTE: reformatting does erase everything on a disk, so keep that in mind.
What is the difference between File Vault and .dmg in disk utilities?
FileVault is whole disk encryption. Everything on the disk is encrypted. and you need to enter the password just to mount the device.
A .dmg file is a regular file that happens to contain a file system inside of it. When you double click on the .dmg file, Mac OS X will mount the file system inside as if it was a disk. If the .dmg file is encrypted, then you will be prompted for the password before Mac OS X will mount it. A .dmg is just a container for a file system. Inside that contain is a full file system with files and directories just like any other file system.
You can create read only .dmg files, you can create read/write, you can create sparse (you declare the maximum side, but the initial size of the .dmg is small and will grow to the maximum size as you add things to the .dmg, you can create encrypted .dmg.
Since a .dmg is just a file with no special attributes on the outside, it can be copied around. You can copy it over the network, you can store it in the cloud, you can put it on a USB Flash drive, you can put it on an external disk, etc...
If the device you put it can be mounted by Mac OS X, then you can double-click on the .dmg and it will mount the file system inside the .dmg and you will be able to access the files in the .dmg
This even includes USB Flash drives that use the FAT format family. But you existing external disks can be used for that as well.
If I used an external hard drive for the purpose I have in mind, would the disk .dmg utility allow me to access folders and files for editing or should I approach the task in a different way? I would still wish to encrypt.
As I said above, the .dmg is a full file system where you can store files and folders inside a .dmg container file. And you can encrypt the .dmg so it is secure. -
PCIe-6536 Simultaneous Read and Write
I have an application where I need to simultaneously read 24 bits (Ports 0-2) and write 8 bits (Port 3), using an external clock. The way it is done now is I create a read task and I create a write task. I send my external clock to PFI4 and PFI5, because two clock inputs are required (one for read, one for write). And I send a trigger signal to PFI3 to start and synchronize the tasks.
However it is not working correctly. My clock is ~15MHz and the reads and writes are off by a random number of a few clock cycles. For example when I start writing out Port 3, the reading into Ports 0-2 will start 2 or 3 or 4 clock cycles later.
Is there a way that I can read and write simultaneously that will work correctly??I am still trying to figure out this problem. I want to simultaneously write bytes out of Port_3 and acquire 24 bit words into Ports 0-2. The only way I know to synchronize the tasks is to have them both start on a rising edge trigger signal on PFI3.
If my clock is a few hundred kilohertz, the tasks are synchonized. When the clock is over 1 MHz then I start seeing the read of 24-bit words lagging the output write by 1 clock cycle sometimes. The higher the clock rate, the more delay I see. With a 20MHz clock I see a lag of 8 or 9 or 10 clock cycles. I spent a lot of money on this card but it apparently doesn't work as advertised. It is supposed to work up to 25MHz but I have problems at 1MHz.
The way I am testing it is to loop Port_3 directly into Port_2 with a short ribbon cable (using the CB-2162 test board made for the I/O card). I can send a pattern out and read it in and see how many of the first bytes were not read in. For some reason the Acquire task is lagging the Generate task... -

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility. -
Read and write access for shared folders shouldn't be enabled but it is.
I have an external hard drive with all my media stored on it. This is shared over the local network so that others on my network can access it.
However I set it u for read only access (I dont want the rest of my family to be able to delete files) but it persists to have read & write privaleges.
Im sure im missing a really obvious point but I can't work it out. So was hoping someone could help.
In System Pref-Sharing-File Sharing the folder is shared with 3 users added:
Alastair Riddle (Read and Write) <----My account
Staff (Read Only)
Everyone (Read Only)
I have applied permission to all folders, but guests appear to be able to log on and have full read write privaleges.
Your help would be appreciated,
AliI'm no expert on this one, but for the others to be included under the Staff heading, I believe they have to be added to that group.
It may be easier to add them by name and set to read-only, and add an entry for Guest as read-only.
And ensure that the external drive has Owners Enabled. -
Sharing and permissions, custom access, cant get user to have read and write acess
Hello everyone, i have a Netgear Stora NAS on my MAC, its located in the finder under shared, when i click on it i sign in with my user account and it gives me my folders to my stora, on one of my folder (Movies), i clicked get info and under sharing and permissions it told me i had custom access, i changed the privelages of the name,"Everyone" from no access, to read and write, when i did this, the name on tope of this (the main username) vanished. so ive been searhing on how to get my privelages back, i went to + and added new GROUP "admins" and it gave me my main username back but now with read only acess, when i try to change it to read and write it dissapears, PLEASE HELPPPPP, thank you!!!!
<Edited by Host>I am not sure why you get that error. One thing you can do is a SMC reset then try to format it again. However that being said I'm not fan of WD external HD's primarily because we see a lot of troubles with them on Macs. Their internal HD's are fine so that narrows it down to their enclosures. If the problem persists I'd return the drive and buy one of the following:

• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.

• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
Read and Write Files to user from Forms Server
We are developing an application that requires us to rread and write files to the user system. We are deploying using the developer/forms server and this is not happenning. The text_io package and the d2wkutil operate on the application server system, not the user system. So is there a method to read the file contents into the app and write files out to the user system across the web. Thanks.
developer6 can interact with javabeans. the javabean runs as an applet on the client machine. all you have to do is setup a javabean that read and write to your client machine.
when you test your application, work with java console open so you'll be able to debug your appliacion, if you'll receive java security execption you may need to sign this javabean. look at sun site for info regarding the usage of javakey for signing java classes and jars. -
I'm trying to share a folder between users on a single mac. I want both users to be able to read and write so the folder stays current on both accounts. I put the folder in "shared," set permissions on folder so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account. Any help?
Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder
