User experience of Start Before Login?

If you enable this ability, does it remove the ability to start VPN without logging out of Windows? In other words, can they log in both ways or does it take the place of starting the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client 3.1 from within Windows XP or Windows 7?
There are some users who say if they are working locally on their laptop at home and then later decide to connect to VPN to access a file share or intranet web site, it will be a huge hassle for them to have to close all their open applications, log off and then log back on just to start the VPN.
What if they use SBL to start VPN and their connection gets dropped later? Will they have to log out of Windows to get reconnected?
It will be much easier to keep the local login credentials in sync with the domain and receive certain group policies if SBL is enabled, but if it adds a lot of other inconvenience, it may not be worth it.
Can we have users continue to connect they way they normally do from the Windows desktop and then use SBL whenever needed (such as if they forgot the old cached Windows password and needed to login with their current password)?
Pros and cons? Is it more or less convenient to have Start Before Login enabled?

ISE 1.2 and Posture Report Before Login

Hi everyone,
Is it possible for the ISE 1.2 NAC/Posture agent to submit a posture report before user login on a Windows desktop system?
We're trialling ISE 1.2, performing machine based authentication using EAP-TLS/Certificates. On top of this we are also using the posture agent and do not grant access until a 'compliant' posture report is received.
Currently when a desktop powers up the posture status is 'pending' and this does not change until the user logs in, the NAC agent submits a successful posture report. This can take quite a few minutes leaving the user in a state of limbo where they have logged in to the computer but they must wait for the posture report.
I see the NacAgent service runs as system, but the NACAgentUI.exe does not and only starts with the user logs in.

That is correct, the nac agent is unaware of what policies exist in your ISE design. It's sole purpose is to start when the services allow it to do so and then send the information about the services and AV information it can gather so ISE can make a decision on whether the client is compliant or not compliant, it can then take direction on how to remeidate the client when it fails. There is nothing you can configure from ISE that will allow you to run the nac agent before user login.
In the end when the nac agent makes into the anyconnect secure mobility client you might have hope there since there are some start before login vpn features, but I do not see the nac agent adopting this any time soon. You should however still work with your Cisco Account team on doing some research with the BU on your behalf, this could benefit alot of nac customers.

Start program before login

Hi,
I'm trying to run a mac-mini with no keyboard and mouse connected to a TV. I'd like to use my iPhone for control from the couch. This works fine if the autologin option is enabled as the server program the iPhone talks to loads when I login.
What I'd like is for the program (touchmouse server) to start before I log in. Anyone have any ideas how to make this program start before I login?

I would suggest making your program a service in Windows 2000. Microsoft sells the WIndows 2000 Resource kit which has some utilities to convert any executable to a service. I think there are some shareware utilities as well. Then, make sure your service has a taskbar interface (a cute little icon in the taskbar next to the clock). This may have to be done with some external programming, but I am not sure on this. You will also need to make sure that the NI-DAQ service starts before your service. I think this can be done with some registry edits.
If you get this finished and working well, please post back how you did it so that we can share this knowledge with other users of LabVIEW.

User Exit BEFORE Login

Hi experts,
I have a problem:
We use differerent solutions for Web Access for externals - Web Dynpro and a normal GUI, shown via WEBGUI.
So we create a new user (SU01) for the external and he can access the system
But this problem may appear:
The external tries to login via OPERATOR, DDIC, SAP*,... and lock this user - system will hang up!
Solution can be a user exit BEFORE login, so we can check the user name (OPERATOR...) and don't authorize for login.
Is there a user exit? I know the exit EXIT_SAPLSUSF_001 - bt this one is too late (after login).
Also it would be important to know if the login is via SAPGUI oder via WEBGUI/Webdynpro (in EXIT_SAPLSUSF_001)
Any ideas on this?

Hmmm...I will try this. But I'm not sure if I will reach this point if I try to login with the wrong password?!
Edit: I tried to logon with a wrong password (before i created a hardcoded Breakpoint in the user exit). But I won't reach this point.
So the question is not solved. If someone tries to logon as Operator several times, user Operater will be locked. How to prevent to log on via specific users (like Operator, DDIC...) in the Webgui?

Windows Embedded Standard 7 TCP/IP Services not completely started before user application loads

WES7 is set to autologon a user and launch a startup batch that launches my application. My application, through a series of LEDs, notifies the user when the system
is initialized and ready to go. What I've noticed is that even though the system is "up and running" TCP/IP services are not initialized yet. For example, RDP Server won't respond as well as ICMP/ping and FTP services. Sometime
later, maybe 20-30 seconds Windows TCP/IP services come alive and everything is okay. Once other thing to note is that I am using BIT Locker and when I turn it off, TCP/IP services, a majority of the time, are alive immediately at or around autologon.
My guess is that there is some contention when Windows is logging and starting services and the behavior for which services are started when is not always deterministic. Is there a way to guarantee TCP/IP services starting before other services?
I’ve messed around with several services in service manager but none seemed to fix the problem. One other item to note. I was able to issue a ping as my first command in my startup script to a fixed IP which appears to force TCP/IP services
to initialize. The problem with this “hack” is that I don't know any host IP addresses until my system has fully started. Plugging in the loopback address in the script or my own external IP did not work.

Another Ovi Share first-glance user experience

Excited from the Nokia World presentations I decided to give Ovi Share a try. Previously I've been using Picasa and some local photo sharing services such as kuvaboxi.fi - that is to say that I had some baseline to judge Ovi share against.
First challenge was getting into ovi.com. Due to some cookie issue in Firefox I just got some java.lang.NullPointerException when trying to log in. Of course the error message was total gibberish and, interestingly, I noticed that there is no way to report such bug from the Ovi frontpage. Yes, you have the FAQ, but no info what-so-ever how and who to connect in case of login errors. Persistent as I was wanting to experience Ovi share I did login with IE, was able to send bug report and finally get the thing fixed - pheww...
At first look, Ovi Share looked ok. If only it had functioned ok... Creating an album in the web is easy, and so is adding photos - great! Made few albums and that's when the drawbacks (showstoppers one might say) started occuring to me...
1. There's no way to create sub-folders! Are you real?!! So I can't make album 2009 and then sub-album Event XX? Uh, this front page will become ugly and confusing to use in a short while if I continue uploading my precious photos to these folders.
2. I can't edit photos in groups. So there I am uploading 50 photos from my laptop and I can't even tag them collectively or move them between folders without going through the photos one by one. wt*? please excuse me my French... I really got frustrated after like 3 photos. And I couldn't even delete them in groups to re-start from the beginning and upload the photos directly to correct albums. argh!
3. Tags, oh this one's great! As in bullet above, I can't tag the photos in groups - already a real pain in the bottom. It's done quite handy when uploading from my mobile device, though. But then in Ovi Share, why on earth can I not filter / search the photos based on tags? To use the tag search, I have to browse my way through to a photo which as been tagged with the particular tag and only there I can click the tag to search photos with similar tags. And what d oI get when doing this? --> No items found. Again wt*? I just clicked a photo with that tag!!
4. Uploading photos from my device. Overall, this works great in my phone. That is if I'm uploading to an album that already exists. No way to create a new album while doing it directly from photo browser application. Well, what the heck, let's just dump them to the default "root" album and sort them to right album in Ovi Share. ok, done. all items show nice in All Media. I create new album, start moving pictures one-by-one (well, I'd do it in groups but that's not available!). Doesn't take too long to notice that in All Media you can't see actually see where the images are stored. So there I am sorting 50 pictures taken & uploaded, and the only way to know which images I've already moved is to move between All Media and my album and make a manual verification. another wt*?!! I would spend two hours or so sorting 50 pictures and still end up with pics missing from albums.
5. Viewing the images. How come I can only watch these in full-screen by starting a slide show or downloading the pics back to my hard drive? And what if I wan't to zoom in on some detail? To tell you the truth the experience of viewing photos is so bad that I wouldn't use Ovi Share to, for example, share images related to ebay auctions. Any potential buyer would probably just walk off immediately.
I haven't even dared to try the Ovi Suite on laptop if that makes things any easier. Ovi Share, as it is now is totally unusable. How bad can a first glance user experience be? Well, Ovi Share just set new standards for me

I completely concur. I've just spent the last two days tryng to force both Ovi for PC and Ovi Share to do what could be fantastic.... but it's not, it's **bleep**. I've gone back to PC Suite on the PC and am just about to give up on Ovi Share.
Here's my main gripes with Ovi Share
Ovi Share has the potential to be a great site but....
Uploading via the "World" share online symbol within photos is fast but....
You can't even choose an existing album - it always select the first one
Tags aren't created
The date of the photo doesn't go through - it uses the date uploaded as the date created
The description doesn't get uploaded
You can't move or delete multiple files when they are uploaded
There's more as you said in your post but it's really disappointing. By the way, if I've got any of these wrong and there's a fix please let me know.

Apps starting at login always start offline?

Hi there,
I have a couple of apps that are starting at login. Although every time I start my Mac, the apps start, they always display a notification that there is no internet connectivity.
Is there any way to make the apps start only when there is internet connectivity? Otherwise, I'll need to close a bunch of popups before I can start using my apps.

You could try a workaround…
Open Automator.
Create a new 'Application'
Search for the 'Pause' action in the library of actions, and drag it to the workflow area on the right.
Set the value to 20 seconds or so
Search again for the 'Launch Application' action.
Select the desired app & repeat for every one you want open.
Save this Application (maybe in your home folder/Applications).
It should look like…
Open System Preferences > Users & groups, select your account, edit the login items & delete the old applications. Add the new Application and see if it works.
You will need to disable the option to 'Reopen windows on next login' when you logout (or quit these apps before logout).

Change TrackPad(Click= Tab) before login

Hi all,
Is it possible to change trackpad behaviour before login into my account?
Currently the trackpad is set to "Click" but I want it set to "Tap" before logon.
Once I'm logged on it is working ok so it's basically only setup for my user account via (System Preferences>Trackpad>Point&Click)
I've searched this discussion forum but only found not properly working trackpads, I have no issues with my trackpad.

I tried adding "Requires=" still not working as planned. OVH dedicated box that had networking installed out of the box. I wonder if I need to do some tweaking there. I just looked at boot log and services are starting before the network is up. Removed some lines to make it more readable. Win 7/Z580: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

I find some interesting posting in this forum. Thanks for keeping this forum to help windows/Lenovo community. I like to pick up the brain of this forum to resolve the black screen issue. I am not sure, whether it caused by virus. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I am not able to run this in command prompt.
I started my laptop this morning & login screen showed up. Once I entered my login credentials, I heard the sound that usually plays once a login is successful, but I ended up with a black screen. After this occurred, I had to hold down the power button to manually shut down the computer. Once I started it up again, I was prompted to do a system repair, which eventually ended up with all successful outcomes, but I now have a black screen with a cursor before the login screen now. I have no idea what caused this to happen. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Model Z580 (500 GB HD, 6GB RAM).
I am not able to get into safe mode or any other mode, which all leads to a black screen described above. I am able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting only . All other options leads to Black screen with cursor in the middle
Last Known Good Configuration leads to same
Enable Low Resolution Video (640x480) leads to same My Z580 is not responding to CTRL+ALT+DEL Windows Logo keys as well.
**** I tried SAFE Mode. It loaded couple of drivers and paused at CLASSPNP.SYS load. It went to Black screen with cursor at center.
I am able to invoke control pannel from Command prompt of working PC by typing control.
Z580 PC is not responding to control from command prompt (under Repair Your computer) either.
Z580 is able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting .
Under local user login it provided Start Repair option. As I pick this option, I got the following. Problem signature

Under Admin user login, it provided system recovery options. It is not picking up the recovery point created a while ago.
Windows Memory Diagnostics is not launching and shows a black screen without cursor.
I am able to get into command prompt. I tried the following there.

I did findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt I will be glad to attach the zip file that contain CBS.LOG & [SR] tag extract (xxx.txt).
I did not any find ERRORS there, SFC ended with message saying "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" . It is misleading. There is no [SR] tag pointing to corrupt files. Does SFC through false positive like this?

Radeon HD 6750M - Sudden drop windows 7 user experience index scores and performance in Battlefield 3

Ok I have a strange problem regarding the performance of my graphics card Radeon HD 6750m in my bootcamped window 7 and maybe in OSX,here's what happened.
Firstly I noticed this when going to load up Battlefield 3 which has been ruining fine on low settings since it first came out, but today i loaded the game as usual and when i started playing i noticed that the performance had completely bogged down to about 1 fps and had became unplayable so had a look at the video settings and they were all the same (set to the lowest possible) so i quit the game and restarted the game/machine a couple of time but no change, still completely unplayable for no apparent reason.
So next a checked my Windows user experiance index number and notice that windows had detected changes in my hardware so i ran the test again, previously my scores were
cpu: 7.5
ram: 7.6
graphics: 6.9
gamming graphics: 6.9
Hdd:5.9
overall score 5.9
the new test results came in and every things else had stayed the same apart from the two relating to the graphics had some how changed, the new results were:
cpu:7.5
ram:7.6
graphics: 3.9
gaming graphics: 5.7
overall score
I was completely confused how such a drop in performance could happen as i have not changed any of the hardware? is almost like the performance has halved relating to my gpu.
I have tried reinstalling drivers but still no resolution
I was wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what the possible causes could be and how a could fix this
my hardware is:
MacBook Pro 17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
hdd: 750 GB

Yeah its all very strange, in my opinion it must be something to with the drivers. After I had relised that something had seriously changed with my hardware setup in the way windows recognizes the graphics card, I tried reinstalling different versions of the drivers for the AMD Radeon HD 750M and one version gave me a small improvement of about 0.2 in the windows user experience thing scale in the category that scores the graphics (cant remember which version the driver was was as it was a spur of the moment thing) so could be a driver problem but it was working fine using the preview drivers AMD provided on their web site before.
I have also tried using the the original disk that bootcamp created during the install to re-install origianl divers (basically all the necessary drivers for windows to recognise hardware in Macbook Pro) and that never made any difference.
This also happened before the windows update that you wrote about Cuziuzi (its was an optional update for the windows 64bit) because I installed this after battlefield 3 had died on me thinking it might resolve the problem.
on a sidenote steam is refusing to lauch games on osx and i'am the process of re-downloading the game again to try and fixes the issue (have only got L4D2).
I am going to look into it tomorrow and try to figure out what the problem is and post some info about drivers specifications and some more clarifying information.
Hopefully my GPU is not in the process of dying on me after the constant heat bombardment it has to endure thanks to Apples great design philosophy of visual aesthetics over functionality, fingers crossed Battlefield has not fried it!

I'm seeing an issue that started this past Monday with no recent change to our environment.
External Outlook Anywhere users and Mobile users, OWA users are unaffected.
Internal Users are affected when using Outlook of any version, 2010 or 2013.
-Internal Users normally log into their workstation with their ad credentials, domain joined machines. Outlook opens without credentials prompting ideally.
1 . Using Cached Mode:
a. Login Prompts, slowness - Since Monday, users are getting prompted to login. The prompt goes away after logging in at startup. It is also causing high CPU
on the workstations.
b. Free/Busy, Out of Office doesn't work. I can, however complete auto-setup for a new user, so autodiscover is not completely down for internal users.
c. Checking Connection Status shows connecting status on highlighted entry below without ever establishing connection (just goes away).
The outlook icon in the system tray says "Outlook is requesting data from the server":
2. Using Non-cached mode
a. No Login Prompt at startup, business as usual
b. Free/Busy, Out of Office works fine. Autodiscover is fine.
c. Checking Connection Status shows normal except, it has "casarray URL, then status is referral" it seams to flicker this constantly then go away intermittently.
d. Main issue in non-cached mode is, sometimes a user will log into windows, open outlook and it will not open and says "server is unavailable. Retry, work offline, or cancel" I can try re-opening, same message.
Only after logging out of windows, logging back in, I can get back into outlook. This is not every time, or consistent with specific users, but random.
3. Lync Pop up for credentials often, though entering the password.
URLs are correct. Autodiscover, EWS, etc.
Already tried bypassing our loadmaster load balancer with host files on clients. same issue regardless of casarray node.
Not sure what is going on.

You have a hybrid configuration with Office 365, right? You didn't provide this valuable piece of information.
In Exchange Online PowerShell run this command:
Get-OrganizationConfig | FL PublicFoldersEnabled
If the value is "Remote" then users with Exchange Online mailboxes are looking to on-premises public folders. Be sure that you have legacy pubic folder interoperability properly configured.

Bad user experience/errors with Adobe Air widget installation

I'm having a nervous breakdown at work (it's 10pm and I'm
still in the office), an Adobe Air widget application I've built is
somehow causing the client to panic (they can't install or run the
Adobe Air installation or the widget and now they feel all their
users are having the same problem). If anyone has a minute to try
this out and let me know if the widget installs correctly of if you
have any recommendations on a better user experience I'll greatly
appreciate it. The client is receiving an error message when
installing Adobe Air (error 0 or something).
widget is on the bottom left (installs for PC and Mac). If
the widget installs without any glitches please let me know. God

The application installed just fine for me. I'm running
Windows XP SP2 and I already have AIR 1.1 runtime installed.
I do have a few suggestions for improvement though! Just take
or leave any or all of these! :)
In your popup you say,

Is this really a necessary requirement? If you are
downloading the .air I think it would not matter whether or not you
have Flash installed.
Then you say,
"After installing Adobe Air (link below), return to this page
and re-install the 9IX Rules Widget. Install Adobe Air Now .
Otherwise click on the button below (the widget install button)."
I understand you are trying to make this easy for people but
to me this seems confusing.

If someone does not have AIR runtime already installed I
thought running a .air would trigger the download and install. If
not this gets pretty complicated. How do you test if they have AIR
or not? And since most will not at this early stage how dow we
educate end-users to even know if they have it or not?

You should digitally sign your AIR app so it does not say
Publisher: UNKNOWN with the big red "?" icon!
I would recommend against using all caps in your messages.
I would recommend choosing a better font (maybe a pixel font)
since the message text is a bit blurry.

[SOLVED] PulseAudio does not start at login

I am not sure what happened to my config, but pulseaudio no longer starts at login under Gnome. Attempting to start from a terminal using
$ pulseaudio --start
fails with:
N: [pulseaudio] main.c: User-configured server at localhost, refusing to start/autospawn.
I followed the instructions on the PulseAudio ArchWiki page under "Daemon startup failed" without success. Interestingly, pulseaudio will work with
$ pulseaudio -D
I pasted the output from
$ pulseaudio -vvvv

Replying to myself:
Just recalled that I had recently set PULSE_SERVER = localhost in /etc/environment. Removed that and everything is working again.
This thread helped me figure it out.
