'User failed to respond' (error -8) - a serious issue that needs attention

Based on the various posts here it is becoming increasingly apparent that, in most cases, this is not a user defined issue related to incorrect router settings/port configurations etc..
There also appears to be a fairly conspicuous correlation between upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.7/Qtime 7.1.2 and the onset of problems with iChat. It is particularly notable that many people have been using iChat successfully for some time and that it has all of a sudden ceased working despite no manipulation of parameters related to network access (other than those associated with the 10.4.7 software upgrade of course).
In summary, it appears that that the 10.4.7 upgrade has rendered iChat inoperable (possibly through altering the nature of communication with wireless routers? I have’nt noted if anyone with hardwired connections have been experiencing these problems).
I am not an expert in this area, so apologies if I am stating the bleedingly obvious (or, at the other end of the spectrum, if I'm completely off the mark). Nonetheless, this appears to be a serious, global issue that is affecting an increasing number of people in the same way despite having different routers, ISP's etc.. and it is something that needs addressing.
Is there anything in the pipeline on this yet? Or is it still being handled on a case-by-case basis, which, while appreciated, has not been successful in any way thus far.
Some sort of formal response re: what steps are being taken to correct this would certainly be appreciated by many it appears.

I strongly agree. I have had nothing but trouble with iChat since I upgraded to 10.4.7 & QT 7.1.2 (error -8, not responding...). I can still chat to other buddies running Tiger, but no longer can chat to buddies on AIM PCs or buddies running Panther -- buddies I have been chatting to for more than a year without a single problem.
I also tested against the automatic clients on Ralph John's great website: appleu3test01 works fine, rjinwipc doesn't.
I have tried using the 10.4.7 combo update -- no luck. I have even tried reverting my iChat & its libraries back to 10.4.6 using Pacifist. Same problem. Alas, I am on a group wireless router that I am not allowed to administer, so I can not try any of Ralph's port opening tricks... So, short of reinstalling the entire OS, I am stuck.
Given the large number of people who are reporting this erorr recently, clearly, the 10.4.7/QT 7.1.2 updates have broken iChat for many, many people. Apple needs to step up and:
1) acknowledge they have broken something
2) build a "revert to 10.4.6 installer", as they did with QT a few months ago.
3) publish an official workaround (if the port opening works)
4) give us a timeline for a patch ASAP
Thanks, LachlanT for saying what needed to be said.
P.S. I went by my local Apple store last week and noticed that all their machines are at still 10.4.6...

Have been iChatting via an AIM account consistently for several years, with both family and friends using both PCs (using AIM with Windows XP) and Macs (using AIM or .Mac servers)
Two weeks ago, I started receiving the "Video Chat canceled because.... User did not respond" Error. Yes, the illustrious "-8".
Nothing has changed with regard to the hardware I'm using:
2Wire 1070-B DSL Modem set to "Bridge" when installed on 7/05 (used to use an old Alcatel)
Netgear Wireless Router MR814v2 - UPnP enabled, No Port Forwarding
I've read in these forums that some believe the culprit to be one of Apple's Security Updates (either 2006-0071Ti, 2006-008Ti or 2007-001Ti), or Apple's iChatUpdate dated 1.3.07). I have since re-installed OS X 10.4.8 via the ComboUpdate and have not installed the aforementioned updates.
Quicktime is Set to "1.5 Mbps Ti/Intranet/LAN"
iChat Bandwidth Limit Set to "None"
Mac Firewall "Off" (has always been handled via the Router)
I can connect flawlessly with Apple's iChat Testers (appleeu3test01, et al)
I can video chat via Skype (albeit sluggishly with my trusty G4 600Mhz)
I can video chat via SightSpeed (again, sluggishly due to older processor)
I can audio chat via Skype, SightsSpeed and Gizmo
I cannot audio chat via iChat.
I have, though, been recently able to "One-Way Video Chat" w/audio with a friend using his iChat via our AIM accounts (as of 1.30.07). Go figure.
I've read many similar posts in this forum for a few days now. Have attempted whatever fix or workaround or suggestion from Ralph (great work, BTW!). But the problem persists, and I am ready to disable iChat entirely and dust off my tin cans and string. And since Apple apparently has no interest in addressing the issue (Thanks for officially stepping away Forum participation altogether, Steve), I'm tossing my hat in this ring looking for any help from those in the know.

    I'd appreciate any insight.
My eyes are getting too blurry to continue and have been shooting flames of frustration with what used to be a great application.
Now, iChat is taking up valuable K on my hard drive.

    Ralph...
Thanks for responding. A very frustrating episode I'm having.
Some interesting Add-Ons you have there.
What is iChat Enahancer as I have not heard of it ?
Just an add-on doo-dad. Been using it a while.

    List no ports whatsoever.
    Well, that'd odd.
Yet I seem to able to video chat with Apple's Testers with an apparent lack of Ports. I'm stymied.
How are the ports opened in the 2wire device ?
IF it was port Forwarding is it with DHCP ?
If so check the ports are still pointing to the IP
    that the computer has.
Honestly, I haven't been "inside" the 2Wire modem since I hooked it up (when I switched to SBC/Yahoo DSL - now ATT/Yahoo). From what I understand, as SBC Tech Support told me when I installed the device, we set the 2Wire modem as a Bridge, and that my Netgear Router is handling my ISP login. The Netgear Router is in charge of any UPnP and Port Forwading duties. And Port Forwarding has NEVER been enabled. This arrangement has been working well all this time.
Nothing about my communications hardware set-up has changed since it was installed. As I mentioned, this problem just started about two weeks ago. I've been video chatting flawlessly via iChat and AIM for years.
I'm afraid if I start digging around inside the 2Wire, I'm going to trip over a setting and REALLY screw things up. Also, getting back into the 2Wire modem is proving to be a bit of a sketch. The usual access via a browser is not working as of late, even with a direct computer connection to the modem. : (
Also check the Advanced button in the Mac Firewall
and make sure it is NOT blocking all UDP Traffic.
My Mac Firewall is NOT active, and has never been active. Any Firewall is being provided by the Netgear Router.
Has 2wire started to offer a VoIP service ?
Or have you started to use some VoIP equipment like
    Vonage ?
Not to my knowledge on the 2Wire VoIP service. They provide hardware "gateways" for DSL providers.
No Vonage equipment installed on my system.
I'm inclined to believe this is an iChat/AIM Server issue that's been triggered by recent software/server updates at either Apple's or AOL's end, though I'm no techie. Maybe the iChat mice on the treadmill in my computer just gave up and called it a day.
Again, thanks for all your help. Hopefully there will be joy soon.
    Joe

When I try to do a video chat with a PC user (AIM), I am always getting a "user did not respond" error, or the error message that "I declined the invitation"
I have no problem doing text/audio/video chat with another iChat user.
Any ideas why I cannot do video chats with the pc user?

  • AV failure... "Failed to respond" error

Been suffering from this "failed to respond" error for attempted video connections for some time now. Never quite got a solution for it. I have a PB 12" and iMac mini routed at home through a Netgear WPN824 unit, and now adding a MacBook. We could AV chat at home b/n the Macs (no big deal) but just can't get a connection outside with my in-laws. We used to be able to do this successfully under an earlier version of 10.4.x, but this "failed to respond" error has plagued us for the last few 10.4.x OS versions.
I am just wondering if the Netgear router is an issue? Would a Linksys unit be the solution? Can anyone with a similar experience report whether the issue is somehow related to Netgear's implementation?
    Thanks.

    Hi Ralph,
    Thanks for your comment.
Somehow I'm very curious about this "did not respond" problem.
Especially since it is a problem that occurs not concistently.
It seems that it works now and then (ichat av), and very often it works
stable for quite sometime. Then suddenly the "did not respond" issue is back again and nothing can be done to fix it. When you try later (without changing any settings) it is working like it should again. So I would call it non-repeatable.
The problems started when osx updated to 10.4. I know it is not an elegant solution but the effort is minimum and the previous os is stable under any circumstance. Any idea when Apple has a fix for this, it is an Apple software problem. Can imagine it would save guys like you lot's of time and brainpain.

    JPM
    Hi Jan,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
That is one solution. Normally it is for devices
like the Zyxels that for some reason does not like
iChat on port 5190 or for modems that Port Forward
AND specify Protocols leading to conflicts when port
    5190 needs TCP and UDP.
As the original poster is connecting what looks like
three computers to the 'Net now he would be better
served by Port Triggering or UPnP.
As it is a Netgear it may need UpnP turned Off and On
twice before it works properly (Netgear quirk). If
he is using Port Triggering we will need to check the
    setigs he has.
Defcom has Netgear DG834 variant that works. I have
    a Linksys (Router) that works.

  • User failed to respond

Okay so I have tried with a bunch of different people but I can't get video chat to work I keep getting the message that I failed to respond. I was able to user one of the appletest01 accounts and connected just fine but not to any real person. I have all my ports setup per ichat help guides and had a friend do the same for his but we couldn't connect.
Anyone know something we can try to get around this problem?

  • Unable to chat "because user failed to respond"

I and my family are having trouble using iChat AV for video chat. The problem also affects audio chat.
Essentially, when person A invites person B to chat, and person B accepts, there is a delay with the spinning indicator (which always pauses momentairly in this process) and then person B sees an error message saying that person A "failed to respond". Messaging works fine.
My father experienced this issue first, unable to connect to my brother. However, I was able to connect to both of them. Recently, I was invited to download an iSight Updater, and since this the problem now affects me.
My father uses iChat AV v3.1.6 (v441) on OS 10.4.8 on a G5 iMac
    I use iChat AV 2.1 (v153) on OS 10.3.9 on a G4 iMac
I believe my brother also uses OS 10.3.x
Can anyone provide any assistance as this problem is getting us down! Thanks!

  • Address list service failed to respond error on Exchange 2007 (after adding first 2013 server)

    Hi,
We just installed an Exchange 2013 server within an Exchange 2007 environment.
The Exchange 2013 (CU6) server will be used to setup a hybrid connection with O365, and move mailboxes to O365.
After installing the Exchange 2013 server it isn't possible anymore to create/enable mailboxes on the Exchange 2007 server.
We end up with an error :
    Mig1 TestAccount
    Failed
    Error:
The Exchange server address list service failed to respond. This could be because of an address list or email address policy configuration error.
    Exchange Management Shell command attempted:
    Enable-Mailbox -Identity 'domain.be/customer/TEMP/Mig1 TestAccount' -Alias 'mig1' -Database 'Exchange2007\SG01\DB02'
When executed via EMS we receive this error :
The Exchange server address list service failed to respond. This could be because of an address list or email address policy configuration error

    Hi Lyncer
This error can be caused if the default Public Folder Database not being pointed to the exchange 2007 database which you are trying to create a new mailbox.
Also it can happen if System Attendant service is not running.
    Troubleshooting steps:
    1) Restart the System Attendant Service
    2) Point the affected database to the default public folder
Follow the below steps to do that
    Open EMC
Go to Organization Configuration > Mailbox.
Select the mailbox database that you want to change the default public folder database.
Right click the database and select properties
In <Mailbox Database Name> Properties, click the Client Settings tab.
Next to the Default public folder database box, click Browse.
In Select Public Folder Database, select the public folder database from the list of public folder databases, and then click OK.
    Cheers!!!

  • "Failed to Respond" error

Ok I am sharing internet with 3 roomies on a basic Linksys router, and want to connect with my family back in Miami. They are also on a wireless router, Belkin I believe. Anyway, everytime we try it says it can't work because "I failed to respond". Not sure what this means.
I really appreciate any help, it's very annoying that I can't get this working and its a big reason why I bought my mac.
    Thanks a lot.

I have experienced the same problem. I am temporarily in Qatar and trying to initiate an audio or video chat with family in GA and WI. On my end it says I failed to respond, on their end it says I cancelled. When my family in GA intiates the conference I can join, but cannot with either party in WI. Sorry I did not hekp you but hopefully we both will get some help. None of us are sharing the internet but all are on wireless nets within our residences.

  • "user did not respond" error

    Hello Everyone
I am having what appears to be a fairly common problem and am having some trouble resolving it.
I used iChat with my Uncle and Aunt successfully until approximately 2 weeks ago. Now we are both receiving the error that we 'did not respond' to each other.
We have turned off all firewalls (that we know of), and bypassed routers but are still receiving the same error. It may be possible that I need to configure my modem but am having difficulty finding the information to do that.
I would also like to be able to determine where the problem lies. As they are the only ones that I chat with - would someone mind doing a test chat with me? They have reported not being able to chat with others as well.
I use a Speedstream 5200 for my DSL connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi SarahJ,
There are several ways of doing this.
iChat works best if the LAN you have is either one complete LAN with no subnets.
One way of doing this is to make sure that if you are going to use DHCP that only one device is doing this.
When you have a modem and router then you can put the modem into Bridge mode which will open all the ports.
Or you can put the router into an Access point. This would open the ports in the router.
Whichever device is then the routing device to your LAN will need to have the ports open with either UPnP, Port Forwarding or Port Triggering.
This is where I think your modem is upto at the moment. When connected to it directly it will need the ports opened by one of the methods listed above.
Now we could open the ports in the modem as it is. If this is by Port Forwarding or Port Triggering because it does not have UPnP we could have problems if thr router can not be put into an Access Point Mode and does not have UPnP itself.
This is because iChat had problems when Port Forwarding or Port Triggering is used twice on one LAN as both these methods involve Network Address Translation (NAT)
So what you need to do is create a LAN that only uses only one DHCP if one has to be used and only one variant of NAT if it can not be avoided.
I use this site for Reference http://portforward.com/routers.htm
It will tell you, if your device is listed, what the default IP address is and the User ID and Password is if it has them.
I would then look around the set up pages for UPnP.
I would also set the devices to Static IP addresses if the modem can not be put into Bridge mode or the router into Acess mode.

  • Help! Having Serious Issues and need to save my data!!!

This is probably going to be a long post, and I apologie in advance, but before I give up completely, I need to see if there's anything that I can do to save the data on my computer. Also, I'm writing this from work and don't have access to the system right now, so I'm going to have to rely on my questionable memory to relay the situation.
Since the battery update was installed, I was having intermittent issues with my MBP battery - when I was fully charged, it only showed about 1:45 of time left (down from a usual 3:00 or so). When it would get down to about 50 minutes left, the system would shut off with no warning. I was about to take the system into the Apple Store to get the battery replaced last week, but just to make sure, I followed the instructions to reset the battery and after that was done, it seemed like the battery was fine (showed up as about 3:00 fully charged). But... the system started working very slowly.
As a result, I decided to try to back up the system (I use SuperDuper and backup to an external USB drive). The backup failed mid-stream and my backup file was now useless (that's the last time I use the erase before backing up option). So now I don't have a backup of my data (all of my data is on that laptop).
I tried running Disk Utility, by booting from the installation DVD, to Repair the disk and it stopped with an invalid node error. I tried again, but no joy. A third time, it appears to have completed. However, now when I boot the system, not only is it really slow, but it boots into some unfamiliar linux prompt ("I don't have a name#:", or something like that.
Since I still think that there was a file system problem, I bought a copy of DiskWarrior 4. However, I don't want to wait for the bootable CD, so I tried to install the OS on the external USB drive so I could run it from there. Everytime I tried to install to the USB drive, I got a kernel panic when the IT Tunes install script was loaded. Every time. I tried removing the second (add-on) RAM stick, removing the battery, etc. No joy. Finally on about the 10th attempt, this time on battery power only (no power cable connected), I managed to get the OS to install on the USB drive.
Okay, so now I can boot to the USB drive. I installed Disk Warrior 4 and ran it on the internal hard drive. Kernel Panic. Every time I've run it (error is about unlocking mutex). Even more frustrated now, I tried to backup the disk again (since all my data is on there, I can't afford to lose any of it). No joy. The backup (using SuperDuper or CloneCopyX) fails at various spots. I have some folders on the drive that I tried to copy off (about 7GB) that contain disk images and the like. That copy failed.
So now, I have un-backupable (is that a word) hard drive that I can't repair without kernel panics (although, now as I write this, I didn't try DW without the power cord). And what I need to know is if anyone can think of anything that I haven't tried to save my user data off of the system before I have to take it in to the Apple Store and potentially lose everything that's on it.
My number 1 concern right now is losing the data on the drive.
Can anyone help me at all?
Again, sorry for the long post...
    Thanks!
    Jim

You may not have the luxury of having another Mac but you must know someone who does. You need to boot your Mac into target disk mode. This is going to be your best bet as far as saving your files. Keep in mind that everytime you mess with this computer you are further endangering your data. Also, once your Mac is booted as a target disk, it may be possible to mount it on a windoze computer just to copy your files to another drive. I used to have one here and if i still did I would try this for you but I "offed" it in favor on running windoze (Parallels) on my MBP. But, one way or another, you need to get next to another computer.

  • When I try and export from pages to word I get an unknown error.  No font issues that I know of.

I used to be able to export documents from pages to word.  Things seemed to have changed after Lion.  Whenever I go to export to Word, I get "an unknown error has occurred".  I tried all the font solutions found on here and everything is validated and I don't think it's a font issue.  It's a brand new document with Helvetica as the only font.
    Thanks, chadrs

    I'm unaware of such change.
May you send the Pages document to my mailbox ?
Click my blue name to get my address.
I would check the way it behaves on my own system.
This way we would know if the culprit is the doc or your system.
You wrote "I tried all the font solutions found on here and everything is validated and I don't think it's a font issue."
Must I understand that you trashed the fonts cache file dedicated to iWork ?
If you didn't (what I assume), trash it for see.
    This file is :
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Caches:com.apple.iWork.fonts
For safe I repeat that under Lion, to reach this Library folder we must press the option key while opening the menu "Go to" to be able to trigger the menu item "Library".

  • Serious issues; i need help!

    Ok.
I purchased the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer pack, and proceeded to install into my tower. I removed my old one, all the software connected to it. I carefully follow the instructions that cam with the package: Install the card first, install the software that came with it, then did a shut-down, plugged in my speakers into the required ports(one for front speakers, the other for surround), and started up my system.
I run the diagnostics, and everything checks out fine. I have a 4. sound system(4 speakers and a subwoofer). I selected 4/4. speaker setup, but in my audio and sound devices, there is no listing for that setup; only 5. and surround sound. So, I selected surround sound. So, now I've got everything set up right, I go and play some mp3s. Sound comes through clearly, no problems. But, out of nowhere, there's this loud BEEEP that comes in. I thought it could be the file itself. But, it's completely random, popping in and out. Eventually, after playing the music for some time, another loud beep comes in, and my system locks up and reboots itself. Once Windows XP Pro comes back up, it tells me "windows recovered from a serious error", and asks to send an error message. So, I send it, and it tells me I had a hardware failure, that my CPU rebooted the machine because there was some sort of hardware failure. This also occurs whenever I play my games. I barely even get into the game before it does the same BEEEP and reboot.
I've done a clean removal of everything, and re-installed. Nothing.
I've brought in my system to Best Buy, where I purchased the card, and had there "Geek Squad" guys take a look at it. They couldn't figure it out, so we swapped cards, and got a new one; same model.
I did everything by instruction. Still crashes.
I did a clean boot from XP Pro, even disabled my ethernet card. Nothing.
I've been working on this for days now, and I'm getting very frustrated. I know it can't be a hardware issue, because i get sound fine, up until the crash. My hard dri've was wiped, so I can't see how it could be a software issue.
Help as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Also I went into the BIOS and turned off my PC Speaker, thinking it could have some sort of conflict, but, that didn't work either.
I dunno if my sound card is having issues with my speakers, which are Altec Lansing THX Certified speakers that came with my system upon purchase. This started when I put the card in, but my system is reading the card fine and that it is functioning fine.
    argh.

  • I keep getting error message that plugin container has an issue that needs to be resolved. Some of my extensions and add ons are no longer loading either. I

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the plug ins as well as gone to the trouble shooting area for these plugins. I have tried installing firefox again. I also tried using beta 4 and I had the same issue. Also it is taking forever to load pages.

Did you make sure that your firewall or other security software isn't blocking the plugin-container process?

  • IChat v Skype - 'fail to respond' etc

I have been using Skype on my Mac for a long time, and recently decided to try out iChat AV with friends living overseas. They have Macs too.
I find iChat has superior audio capabilities but it has serious problems with such issues as 'user failed to respond' or 'insufficient bandwidth'. These are problems that occur like 70% of the time and I know it is not a matter of router settings as I could sometimes get iChat to work just great. I have checked out all the postings in this forum regarding these issues and tried all the fixes but still get these problems. They do not happen all the time. Only sometimes! By the way, I am using ADSL 1500 Mbs as are my friends and I know speed/bandwidth are more than sufficient.
So, now its back to good old Skype (never had connection problems from day one). Even Gizmo is good too. Apple seriously needs to work on these issues real quick. They need to learn from Skype.
