"User" files in trash after I started to empty it.

My computer has been acting strangely so I decided to empty the trash, I stopped the process when it showed over 16,000 files being deleted.  Now our user files (copies?) are in the trash, dated the exact time I started to empty.  Is this a virus?  What do I do?

Is this a virus?

  • Strange file in trash and it won't empty

I have a strange file in trash and it will not empty.
There is an alias file that has a strange name and a date of dec. 31, 1903. It will not go away when I empty. I put other files in the trash to see if they would be deleted and they do, but the other will not be deleted.
In the name of the file there is small characters that say "null" then õ's as well.
I took a few screen shots and posted them on photobucket, Take a look. Any suggestions or theories?

On the Mac there are actually multiple Trashes. The user Trash ".Trash" in user's home folder, and multiple (depending on number of volumes in machine) ".Trashes" folder(s) one each in root of volume. In the ".Trashes" folder there can be a trash folder for the user.
It looks like you have a corrupted/illegal character file which you can't delete via the UI. Via the terminal you may be able to. But... you have to go to the "trash" where the file actually is - and it may not be in "~/.Trash". But in the Mac desktop you will see it in your Trash icon.
Have a look at my post here

and the rest of the thread.
Get into Terminal and check your home trash folder, see if the file is there then go to the other trash folders ".Trashes" and look for it there and kill it with "sudo" command as shown in my other post here.

  • Adobe reader X 10.1.1 installer file deletes itself after installation starts?

On my windows 7 pro 64bit, I downloaded the installer and installed adobe reader 10.1.1. Right after I started the installation the installer file disappeared. Did the installer file delete itself? Is this normal and as designed?
    The installer file name:
    install_reader10_en_air_gtbd_aih.exe

The answer to the original poster's question is that this is normal and as designed.
But *WHY* did Adobe design it this way?  It's simple enough to make a copy before doing the installation, but the first time it happens I have to stop and figure out if it's normal.
I suppose there might be some benefit for the average naive user, but still, most installers don't have this behavior.

  • Recovered files in trash after sleeping

Upgraded to Tiger 10.4.11 from Panther about 4 weeks ago using Erase & Install, then restoring apps, files, etc. with Migration Assistant from a clone. Flawless & painless--whew! However, I'm now having one minor but annoying issue--after playing Burning Monkey Solitaire, quitting, logging out & putting Mac to sleep, find recovered files in trash on next log in, specifically a couple of BMS text files. The Freeverse support folks are still working with me on this issue (suggesting doing a Secure Empty Trash, which didn't prevent the files from returning). I'm posting here, however, because today there was also an iPhoto folder (empty) in the Recovered files folder in the Trash. Any ideas on why this may be happening and how to stop it? I've used iPhoto since the OS upgrade without this occurring and, so far at least, no other apps (Word, Excel, other games, etc.) have been leaving orphan files on quit/sleep/logout that wind up recovered in the trash.
As I said, it's a minor annoyance, but hope it's not a symptom of something more serious. Thanks!

Thanks, but that's not quite what's happening here . . . first, neither Burning Monkey nor iPhoto unexpectedly quit--always were quit normally. Second, recovered files folder shows up after sleeping, not just after restarting.

    1. Open application Office error reporting, the application is located in this folder
          /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0
    2. Go in preferences
    3. Uncheck enable office error reporting
    That did it... Thank you!

  • Can't remove user files from trash

    I tried to remove user.
    The operation crashed.
I later deleted the user directories while signed on as another user.
Now the original user files are stuck in the trash and I can't delete them.
    Can't even reset permissions.
What should I do to rmeove them?

You don't delete a User account by dragging the User's folder to the trash.
Open System Preferences > Accounts (or Users and Groups I believe it is in Lion).
You cannot be logged in to the account you're deleting, and you must be logged in to an Admin account.
Click the padlock to unlock the pane, select the User in the list of accounts and click the - (minus) sign below the pane.
You'll be asked what to do with the users home folder - simply select delete and click OK.
No need to get yourself in a permissions pickle.

  • Mysterious "recovered files" in trash after start up

So everytime I start up, there are these unknown files in my trash (maybe like 5 or 6 files). I think they were under the heading of "windows." I delete them, and then the next time I start up they are back. Has anyone heard of this happening?
    thanks
    Spence

    Spence,
It's nothing to worry about. Instead of using daily, weekly and periodic commands in Panther to clear unwanted temp files Tiger does it for you through a launchdaemon at start up. Since it's designed to run each time you restart it's recommended you restart your PB every couple of days instead of just putting to sleep. I have noticed however that merely logging off then on also works.

  • Mysterious File in Trash after emptied.

After I empty my trash there is a mysterious file that appears. I try to move it and it disappears, I try to Copy and paste and it asks for my password then disappears. Two separate file names show up at different times. L2QQU6rVMLLrm6 and ntDu9OqOifdnlP .
Also, after I add one item to trash and empty (secure or regular) it shows its emptying 6 items.
hmmm. this is a new issue and Im freaked. am I being hacked?

Thanks, But I dont have bootcamp installed...no windows. I restarted and it doesnt seem to be happening at the moment. do you think someone could have been on my computer?
no, I do not think that. do you have any external drives attached? those files might be from an external and you need to empy trash with that drive attached to get rid of them. also start disk utility and verify your hard drive. if it reports any damage, reboot from the leopard install DVD, start disk utility from the Utilities menu and repair the drive.

  • User file in trash

I was recently doing some house cleaning and getting rid of user accounts that have spotty activity. In the process I trashed one of my user accounts that had all my photos and lotsa stuff I STILL NEED.
The account folders are still in the trash. How do I move them back and restore to before it all happened???

Just drag them out of the Trash and back to where they belong.

  • Finding items in trash after it has been emptied

2 years ago when i bought my Mac I copied photos from my old PC to the Mac using a portable hard drive. I discarded the Pc and have used the Mac Happily ever since.
Today i discovered that all my photos dating back to before i got my Mac disappeared... They still show up in iPhoto, but when I click on them iPhot tells me it cannot find the original file...
I examined the iPhoto database and searched my hard drive and indeed it contains only thumbnails and instead of the original a thumbnail and an alias. The alias points to the original that was in my trash..
3 weeks ago I emptied my trash file for the first time. (it was 50G- I was surprised that it had never been emptied but it was taking up a lot of space) So it seems that several years of photos were deleted when I emptied the trash. It is of course bizarre that iPhoto was point to photos in the trash... (the path the alias indicates is Users/me/.Trash/ )
I have been making back-ups on 2 separate portable hard drives using Time Machine. But when I go into Time Machine I cannot locate the trash. An Internet search indicates that indeed TM des not back up Trash... is this true? I cannot go back to the folders before the photos ended up in the trash-most likely this happened before i ever installed time machine, back when I set up the Mac.
Is there anything I can do to get my pictures back? Are they still on my hard drive and is there a way to retrieve them even if trash has been emptied?

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news however they're probably gone. About the only thing I can think of is a data recovery service however this will be extremely expensive.
This won't help on this situation but you may find it extremely useful in the future. That is doing redundant backups. Time Machine is great but has a limitation in that it can't boot your system and as you know won't backup what is in the Trash. However if you get a second external HD (don't use your TM DRIVE!!!!!!) in addition to TM you can create a bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. These backups will clone your internal HD completely and will also be bootable in the event the internal HD crashes. Many of us use both backup tools for many reasons. In the event one backup fails for whatever reason in most cases you can fully recover. Had you had a Bootable Clone AND caught the issue soon enough you could have moved the photos that you have inadvertently placed in the trash back to your internal HD and you wouldn't have lost your pictures. There are many other scenarios where this can be helpful. For the cost of an internal HD (probably well under $100) you would have a solution.
    Best of luck,
    Roger

I just started getting the error message below, when I drag a file to TRASH, I get the message "Finder wants to make changes. Type in your password to allow this."  Why ? and how to to stop this request ?

There should be nothing native to the OS X which would ask for a password
or  other information on a restart, unless accompanied by the traditional login
    box with your user name.
There are adware or marginal products that could be called malware (bad)
that would impose their presence and some items that could have been
downloaded by accident or through some corrupted free software site; of
those some could ask for and gain permission to go through your Mac
and maybe even run in the background to do other nefarious misdeeds.
You could see if startup in SafeBoot allows you access past that the Completer.
Since I don't have a pile of helpful article links on how to resolve various issues
I'd be looking them up one way or another.
There are some helpful items in the site http://thesafemac.com - see Tech Guides
listed  (adware, malware, & performance) plus a link to the adwaremedic page.
Also, Apple support has a helpful page on how to remove adware and other bits:
•Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • System Administrator User Files trashed

I made a really dumb move and placed my System Administrator Account User Files in the Trash File. I did this under the Other User Account on my Mac iBook G4 which does NOT have Sys Admin authorization (the files were moved when I authorized the move using my system Administration name and password). Now I have no active System Administrator authority and I can't access my old user files with all my documents, websites, pictures and music accumulated over the past 4 years! These User Files are also protected by File Vault which was set ON. I subsequently have used my Other User Account to move the files from Trash to my Desktop but I can't Open them Up. I have Mac OS X 10.4.11. Can anyone please help me? I think the right procedure may be to setup a New System Administrator Account (or perhaps give this authority to the current Other User Account) and then somehow Reassign or Re activate the Old System Administrator Account and Activate/Open that User Files. Any Ideas out there?

Thanks BDAqua for your very helpful information - I was able to setup a new Sys Admin using your commands. But I still have a major problem in that I can't get to my old Sys Admin User Files where All my past data, documents, pics, music exists. I have my old Sys Adm password (but it doesn't seem to work). I have tried to Open these up using my old/same Mac Master PW (which does still work), but I can't get the system to ask me for it in lieu of my user password. Here are the responses I get:
    1. Restart my iBook: it shows 3 user accounts for which I select my old Sys Adm Account:
    a. Yesterday I did get the old Sys Adm Account to show up after Restart I kept entering the Old PW but the Mac just shuddered the box and asked for it again; I entered it 7 times with same response. I never did go to the next level and ask for my Mac Master PW.
    b. Today I can't get to the ols Sys Adm Log In Box after seveal tries, the Mac responds with Msg "You are unable to log in to the user account "(name)" at this time."
    2. From New Sys Adm account log in: I go to System Preferences and open Accounts and unlock access with my new Sys Adm PW; I then select my old Sys Adm account. It comes up as:
    Name in BOLD FONT (OK)
Short Name in FAINT FONT (which I cannot change/access)
(Below to Right is an Oval) "reset Password" which appears in FAINT FONT and is also not accessible
I do have my OS X Install Disc 1 & 2 (ver 10.4.4) original DVDs. The old Sys Adm user files are FileVault protected (File Folder displays a small red circle with a white dash inside). My files are still there I am certain as I have 40 GB used on my Mac HD.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!
    Steve

  • How can I login and retrieve my user file from the trash?

I was trying to find out where all my HD had gone, which a did using ‘What Size’.
I found what looked like an old backup file so I put the file in the trash.

Stronger medicine may be needed, but try this first
Force the Trash to empty using the Option key
This technique uses a hidden feature of Mac OS X to force the Trash to empty. Perform the following steps in the order specified:
Press and hold the mouse button on the Trash icon in the Dock. The context menu for Trash will display.
Press and hold the Option key or the Shift-Option keyboard combination,
Select Empty Trash from the context menu for Trash.
Release the keys pressed and held in step 2.
