User folder deleted but still taking up space

Yesterday the Safari 3.1.1 update somehow managed to delete my user folder. After the restart my entire user folder had gone along with all my settings. I have since recovered my files using Data Rescue and Firewire, but there is now another problem. While summing the contents of Mac HD comes to little under 20gb, finder is telling me I have only 10gb of my 60gb HD free. This is the same amount as before the user folder was deleted. This means I am unable to move any of my recovered files of a friends mac back onto my own. Is there anyway to get the HD to recalculate its free space? And of course, if anyone knows of a simple solution to recover my user folder fairly easily (as the recovered folders using data rescue have all come back unnamed and all need sorting) then that would also be useful!!! But I'm not hopeful on that one...
Just to confirm though, all the files from my user folder are definitely not in finder anywhere. I have searched both manually and using the search bar for both files as they were named originally and with the names they have come back with via data rescue. And the total sum of all the folders in HD are about 10gb less than what was recovered, so they wouldn't fit anyway!
Thanks

Thanks, I will look at that this evening. In other news... I did a verify disk scan with disk utility and it came back with this
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid node structure
Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have been told that i could do something with the leopard disk, but unfortunately that is in another country to me. I am intending to get a new macbook once they are revised so don't really want to spend much, if any, money on this problem if it can be avoided.
thanks

  • Boot Camp partition deleted but still taking up space?

Specs: Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB memory
Recently procured a used 2008 MacBook Leopard from a relative before going overseas. They also gave me a DVD of Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thing is, I can't seem to partition it in Boot Camp Assistant. It's got 150GB, but only 100GB is actually available.
    1. Boot Camp Assistant gave me:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using BCA again."
    2. Rebooted and held down Cmd/Opt/R keys. Only the HD drive was visible.
    3. Disk Utility. Only one volume: Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So I tried:
    First Aid:
No problems/bugs reported when verifying the disk, so there wasn't anything to repair.
    Erase:
Erased all free space and tried BCA again, still no luck.
    Partition:
Tried adding a new partition and resizing. Tried resizing the original partition. Same result: "Partition failed with the error: No space left on device". Then it just defaulted to the 150-GB sized drive with only 100 GB available.
    Restore:
Tried to restore from the external drive-based backup I made before erasing it the first time. None of the disks could be set as the destination.
I haven't got the install disk or the money to upgrade the OS, so any help would be appreciated!

Well even a good backup program costs something.
Disk Utility is free and can copy the system to another drive (RESTORE TAB)
5.8 is so old you should not be connected to the internet with it probably.
yours is like the 2,999th post of the same error and asking 'what do I do.'
you need contiguous unfragmented free space. Leo 10.5 is not as flexible as later to shrink a partition to help move files to consolidate that free space like 10.6.8 ($20) which is what I would go out and buy.
Carbon Copy Cloner older versions are free/shareware and great for making a bootable backup of your system to another disk drive. Use it!
Not sure what you used or did but to backup and restore you need to use a program that makes bootable backups (you can't just copy files by hand).

  • Deleted files still taking up space

    Hi all,
I've done a search and can't find answers or figure it out. I'm manually managing my iPod through iTunes since I don't want everything to be synched. I've manually deleted various files on the iPod through iTunes, including all video files. Yet in the summary, iTunes still lists my iPod as having 3+ GB of video, even though I've verified there's no video left. I've even deleted a lot of audio files, but iTunes still keeps saying my iPod is full. It's as if my deleted files are still taking up physical space even though I've deleted them. Is there an [empty trash] icon or command I just can't find?
    Thanks!

    Thats it! You're a genius!
The KEY point here is this:
Just like in Itunes, the Music Library and Playlist are two different things.
Just because you delete a playlist, doesn't mean you deleted it from your library.
So, all of this time, I was deleting whole playlists or a few songs from the playlist by highlighting and Edit > Delete. So visually, they were gone. However, everything is still in the library. Every song I ever added since I bought the ipod was still there!!
    SIMPLE DIRECTIONS:
    1. Connect Ipod
    2. In Itunes: Device > iPod > Music - you will see the long list. Manually checking and "sync" does not officially remove it from the ipod (at least not in my case). I manually DELETED them by highlighting and Edit > Delete.
I immediately checked my ipod summary and yes, the space was free!!!!!!!!!!

  • Removing Photos but still taking up space on Storage!?

So I have a question not sure if I am doing this right or if its a bug. So I have a 6 Plus and it says that my photos are taking up a total of 1.8 gigs of space. The issue I am having is that I am removing photos from from the phone but it still is saying 1.8 gigs being occupied. I haven't removed all of the yet, but enough to where it should have dropped to 1.7 or 1.6 gigs? Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help will be appreciated.

No I did not but it says on storage that I have 14 GB left and that I have no video data and the games only take up 4 GB. it is not coincidence that the other 8 GB that are used on the device happen to be the size of the two films I have. It says I don't have them and without internet they don't show up on the device (e.g. Because they are on the cloud) so why are they still taking up storage?

  • Files deleted, but still taking up disc space.

When I delete files from my ext HD or USB flash drive the files are no longer visible but they're still using the disc space. I deleted everything from my 1G flash drive this morning, it was full, to be able to put different files on it and when I started adding the files I got a message telling me that there was no room left on the drive. The info bar at the bottom of the window even showed that there was only a small amount of disc space left, but there were no files to be found. I'm still in the process of the PC to Mac switch so I still have my old PC and use it from time to time. In order to completely delete these files I have to plug it in to the PC and delete them there. Only then is the drive actually empty. The same thing happens with external HD. Will I have to continue to be tied to my PC because if this or can this be fixed.
    Thanks for any help.
    Chris

Hi Matt, I haven't tried that with the flash drive yet but I did with the ext HD a couple of weeks ago and it wouldn't let me because it said the the files were locked, I even tried the "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*" command in the terminal and it still wouldn't allow me to empty the trash, I didn't have the proper authority or something like that. That's when I discovered that once I ejected the HD the trash was suddenly empty. I plugged it in to the PC and emptied the "Trashes" folder, and back to the Mac and they were gone. Could it have something to do with the fact that these files, mostly music files but some PDFs and Word files, are coming from a PC, even though they're all Mac compatible?

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

I have like five GB's of ghost data (data the device claims is not there but it is still taking up space) on my I pad 2 from a failed movie download attempt. How do I fix that with out resting my iPad? I have only 1GB left of storage
The movie had gotten to the point that I could watch it all the way through but it still said processing and got stuck at that point and when I turned off the wifi to try to restart it, it deleted its-self but did not free up any of the storage It was taking up
Restarting my iPad does not help
Some thing similar also happened to my old laptop when trying to download the iOS 5 update to my laptop when it came out. It kept getting disconnected and every time it would try to start over and act like what had already been downloaded was not there though it was still taking up the storage space.
And it continued repeating until it took up all of my storage space. The data file would not show up anywhere so I had to restore my laptop to the factory settings and that worked for awhile but I eventually had to get a new laptop.

Did you try to set it up as new device, as explained in this article?

  • I deleted over 200 self taken videos and over 500 pictures in the Moments window in my photo tab.  They deleted but still show in my setting in the About window and I haven't gained any additional storage capacity.  What do I do now?

I deleted over 200 self taken videos and over 500 pictures in the Moments window in my photo tab.  They deleted but still show in my setting in the Setting/About window and I haven't gained any additional storage capacity.  What do I do now? Please help!  Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!

Check the Recently Deleted album. Deleted photos will reside there for up to 30 days. This allows all those people who accidently delete photos to recover them, something they couldn't do before. To actually free up the space you might have to delete the photos in the Recently Deleted album.

  • HT4914 I have iTunes Match. Why is music still taking up space on my iPhone?

I just purchased iTunes Match. Why is my music still taking up space on my iPhone?

If you have iTunes Match, yes the idea of that is that you have access to all your music from anywhere. If you access it though you will be downloading it, in order to play the music you have chosen to play, once downloaded, that music will stay on your device unless you delete it.
Music that is on your phone will show up as normal, music that is only in the cloud will have a cloud icon next to it, when downloaded the cloud icon will disappear, if you delete it again the cloud icon will disappear again.
In the example below, all my albums by Matt Schofield are on my phone, the others would need downloading.
Photo's are different they kept on your device and only synced to the cloud so they can be pushed to other devices.

  • User Account deleted, but Home folder still visible

Deleted a user account within the System Preferences > Accounts and restarted the computer, but the "deleted" account is still visible under Finder > Users.
It failed to delete the account when I tried to 1st option of saving to .DMG - so I chose the 3rd option i.e.: to remove the Home folder. this seemed to work OK as the User Account is no longer presented as available to Login.
    Don't understand why?
    Thanks

Apple offers the option saving the user file as a disk image or delete the account, but keep the files in the account, or get rid of it entirely. The first two options make it possible to recreate the user account. You must move the file out of the User directory to rename (remove (deleted)) from the name. Place the folder back into the User directory and create another login using the same name as the file and the system will ask you if you want to use the above mentioned folder as the home folder. Click yes and the user is back as if it never left.
Why would I want to bother? You might find that there was something left in the user folder that you want to retrieve. Another reason, I consider even more significant is if I am having problems with a user account and it is isolated to that account, I will use this method to hopefully clear up any corruption within the account.

  • How To: Lock a folder to prevent it being deleted but still access it?

How can I lock a folder to prevent it from being moved or trashed but still have access to move/add folders within that folder?
The scenario is that we have a daily jobs folder and a final jobs folder. The daily jobs folder was accidently moved into an active job folder. I want these folders locked down so this cannot happen but when I use the lock feature nothing can be moved in or out of that folder.
Under OS9 the locked box specifically said "cannot move, rename or delete this item" yet you could add or delete items to that folder all day long.
If I try this with OSX I need to authenticate each bloody time! I just want to lock a folder down and have it accessable by anyone, anywhere, anytime without the need to type a password 80 times a day. HELP ME PLEEZE
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Read only access will prevent the addition or removal of items in the folder you set the permissions on; the folders below that one have different access settings, which can be less restrictive than those for the folder you set it on.
For example, if folder A contains B and C, and B allows Read & Write access but A allows Read Only access, items can be added and removed from B, but B itself cannot be moved out of A, and other items cannot be moved in to or out of A. If a folder your account has Read access to is inside a folder which your account doesn't, you can use the Finder's Go to Folder command in the Go menu to navigate to it if its path is known.

  • 5800:Files deleted, but still on the list

    Help me please,
I'm a 5800 XM 'tube' user. Everything went well for a while, until I decided to connect my phone to a PC without PC Suite, and instead use the phone in mass storage mode.
I've deleted all image files in the memory card (the ones in the \Images\Backgrounds\).
As the result, the files are no longer exist in the memory card, but still exist in the image list everytime I open the Gallery. The icon of the file is like music note, and when I tap it, all of them (actually 37 of them all) would have the same name, which is one of the title of my song in the Music folder.
I can't delete them, I can't open them, in fact, nothing could be done to them. When I tried to do anything to them (like delete it), the icon will change into a 'key'.
So I'm stuck with these imaginary files that the phone thinks that I have.
    So my question is:
How do I refresh the library of my Images like the way I refresh my Music Library? Isn't it suppose to be auto
refresh like in the real player file list?
I've tried to shut the phone down. No change.
I've tried to remove the memory card and put it back again. No result.
I've put back all the files like the way it used to be before I delete them. No can do.
I've transfer all my images and videos to my PC (this time using PC Suite) and deleted all files in the memory card. And voila! the gallery only consists of 37 imaginary files.
I suppose I have to format the memory card to be able to get rid of it, but is it true? What if after I format it, I get blank memory card of 8 GB with 37 imaginary files. Who knows?
Where is the file that consists of the list of the image files. If I delete the list file, will it solve the problem?
So, anyone with any suggestion, please help me?
I know I can just ignore it, but isn't a phone as sophisticated as the 'tube' should do better than that?
    Thank you.

It worked but what if the files are in my phone and not in my memory card? Thanks...

Unfortunately you will have to format your phone.
Before perfoming this please take a backup of your data.
    Factory defaults-
Type *#7780# on your standby screen.
This will reset all your setting to default factory settings. User data wont be affected.
    Soft reset-
    Type *#7370#
This will reset the phone as well delete user data. Use when want to format the phone.
If none of these worked then you might want to do a hard reset.
    For this you have to-
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.( Just in case of N78 it will be the multimedia key the small silver key on right side & for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. For Nokia N97 is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE. )
    3. While holding these buttons, hold the power button to switch on the phone.
    4. Release the buttons when the phone shows the nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.

  • Movie rental still taking up space on iPhone

I downloaded a rental movie on iTunes then moved it to my iPhone. I have already viewed the movie which was around 5 days ago. The movie is gone but the space is still being used up on my iPhone (2.4 gigs) and even after I sync the space is not being released. How can I free up this space not actually being used???

    Hey there ImpossibleXY,
It sounds like you have some items on the phone taking up space but you cannot find them to delete them.
First, if you have not already start by restarting the phone and your computer, then try the sync again to see if it updates correctly.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists I would next backup restore the device with iTunes to see if that refreshes the space correctly on the phone.

Do not delete from the libraries until you know exactly what is being deleted.
Generally you should never delete from either of the Libraries, they contain critical system operation files.

  • How can i remove videos and music that are not on my ipad mini but are still taking up space and are showing that they are there even after i've deleted them?

how can i remove videos and music that have been deleted from the ipad but are still showing in settings as still being on the ipad?

I believe that I have the same issue with iPad Mini with Retina Display, iOS 8.1. No matter which way I delete videos from my iPad, they will still show as "deleted", yet the space is not cleared up. I tried restore and then a full restore (clean setup as a new iPad) and it still does this to me. I can solve it by doing a restore each and every time I download a video and delete it. Rather frustrating. Has been a problem since day 1 of iOS 8. I'm yet to try the power+home button reset. It may very well work, but I am surprised that a "fresh setup" of an iPad didn't resolve it from ever occurring.
