User folder larger than Macintosh HD

I am trying to merge my user onto an iMac with an existing user. I checked the size of my Time Machine backup and it looked like there was ample room on the target machine. However, when I attempted to move my user using Migration Assistant, I was told that there was not enough space. As it turns out, my user folder is occupying more space than what Macintosh HD reports it is using. I have used both Finder and Disk Utility to confirm this. I have attached screenshots of the finder results for both Macintosh HD and my user folder. I am on OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3, on a 24-inch early 2008 iMac (this is the machine that I will be getting rid of).I've tried the following suggestions, but so far the problem persists:
Starting up in the Recovery partition and repairing Macintosh HD, but it said there was nothing wrong with the disk.
I have repaired disk permissions several times
Run fsck from Single User Mode, all to no avail.
I've manually deleted the .DS_Store files from Macintosh HD and my user folder and then relaunched Finder
I have also attempted to force Spotlight to reindex my entire hard drive
So at this point I'm at a loss to explain the discrepancy in size and don't know of any other options. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I used Disk Utility to repair permissions and this is what I got.

I can't tell what it means cos I'm just a regular user with no Unix knowledge. Anyway, now other computers on my network can't see me as a User, only sees the Shared Folder. Could it be because I upgraded to Leopard ?

  • "Users" folder missing on Macintosh HD

    Hello.
I've just updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks 10.9.3 and iTunes to 11.2. Now my "users" folder is missing when I open my Macintosh HD. I need this folder for some Apps, so I created a temporary folder on my Macintosh HD to recieve some files and then I move them to the right folder. But I want "users" folder back again. I saw an old post about this issue, but it's too old and it's not working for me.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks.

it's not only a bug (or someting the like) appearing in 10.9.3
in my case it began in 10.9.2, I tried to correct this updatong to 10.9.3, but no help
and neither correcting it with [sudo chflags nohidden /Users] nor starting a session as root lets the bug definitively be corrected.... with next restart /Users returns to invisibility
curiously the home folder is accesible thru command or the finder preferences of window's side bar
but the 'Guest' or 'Shared' folders are also not accesible if /Users is invisible (sauf with the trick of accesing home folder and then command arrow up)
I really think it's a bug, and will be corrected (but when?)

  • Concern with "File Sharing: On" -- my root user folder (and subfolders) and Macintosh HD is visible

    Hi all,
When I set up a File Sharing folder in OSX called "Share", I connected from my PC to my Macbook Pro and not only did I see the "Share" folder but I also could see and have total access to my root user folder (all its subfolders too) and my Macintosh HD (hard disk).  Did I miss something?  All I did was check mark "File Sharing" in the Sharing option of System Preferences.  Then I specifically shared only the "Share" folder that I created on the OSX desktop.
How do I turn of sharing for the root user folder and my Macintosh HD folder?
    Many thanks in advance!

Yes, I was logging in from my PC laptop to Mac as the Admin.  However, since there is a User called "Everyone" and I, for testing purposes only, turned Read/Write on for "Everyone", I figured I did not have to set up another user (such as "Guest").  I was wrong.  Once I created a new user called "Guest" and specifically checked the Guest account in the SMB option, it worked in the restricted mode I was hoping for.  Thanks!

  • Installing extensions in a user folder (not in a system folder) - possible?

    Hello,
I suppose this is an old question, but I have not been able to find any answer in the forums (probably I used the wrong search terms).
If this is the wrong forum to post this topic to, please suggest me a better one.
Question: in the context of using the Java Plug-In, is it possible to install Java extensions in a user folder, rather than in the default location <javahome>/lib/ext ?
The background of the question should be clear: installing extensions to the usual location requires running the browser "As Administrator" under Windows Vista and beyond.
    TIA to all volunteers,

  • Email account folder in /user/library/mail is much larger than full mailbox archive for the same account

    Hi,
I recently changed jobs and want to archive all email (with attachments in place) for the associated work email account.  I also plan to remove the old work email account (IMAP) from the list of active mailboxes in Apple Mail.  I don't want Spotlight searches for personal or current work email cluttered with results from my old job.
I have created an archive of the old work account by doing Mailbox Archive for all of the IMAP folders for that account.  The entire archive is 1.7GB in size.
Before I delete the old account from my Mail preferences, I want to make sure that I have really exported everything.  So I've compared the size of the new archive folder with that of the mailbox folder in users/.../Library/Mail for that same account.  That latter is 8.7GB in size.  Why the enormous difference?
Can the difference be attributed to lack of compression and indices (which would be rebuilt if I import the archive) for spotlight searches?  Am I missing something in the archive that I created?
I've created a zip of the system folder.  Can I easily restore this at a latter time if I delete the email account from my Mail preferences?
Is there a better way to achieve my objective?
    Mitoids

I did find a "Recovered Messages" by looking in the the Mail client under "On My Mac" (I don't normally use that feature).  One message with an accicental 99MB attachment that I never sent, was recovered ~60times, consuming 5.7GB.
I deleted all of those, but the size ~/Library/Mail/xxxaccount folder did not change much.  It is still much larger than the Archive I created.  BTW, this is an IMAP account that was syncing with corporate GMail.

  • Exchange 2013 - powershell - create search folder for items larger than 24mb

    Hi all,
is it possible to use PowerShell and create search folder in spesific mailbox that contains items larger than 25mb?
    Thanks!
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you. Thank you! Off2work

    Ok this should be possible.
I just tested a basic idea of what you want to do on Exchange 2010 SP3. IF you need me to test on 2013 let me know.
Add the account you want to run the powershell search as to the "Discovery Management" role in AS or ECP.
This gives you access to the "search-mailbox" command. Using this you should be able to build a search that moves mail to a different folder.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dd298173(v=exchg.150).aspx
    Thanks,
Edit: something like this would help but the target mailbox would be there own I guess
Search-Mailbox -SearchQuery “Size:>25MB” -TargetMailbox SomeMailbox -TargetFolder Export -LogOnly -LogLevel Full
Ok so I have found a issue where the command does not allow the source mailbox to be the same as a target mailbox. I dont know if this will help you then unless you go through a long process of moving the mail out then back but thats very long.
You could create a rule for this but it would have to be run manually with specific settings so I guess that might not work as user training can be difficult.
You could write a VBA macro for this and then apply it to all you machines.
Or there is a 3rd party tool that could help you called
    Auto-Mate
Sorry I could not be more helpful.
    Good luck

  • How to create new user with more than one default folder

    hi
A new user created in OCS has only one default folder(Inbox).
I want to create new user with customized default folder.
    for example:
a new user has more than one default folder(Inbox,Outbox,Draft,Dustbin...)
And also I want to automaticly enable the functions:
When sending messages, place a copy in Outbox
    Keep message drafts in Draft
    Move deleted messages to Dustbin
    who know that?
    thanks

The same reason that Apple and 3rd Party vendors put multi-size templates in one file I expect. I am trying to construct an in-house standard template for use in our company, and it is easier to manage if there is only one file to send to people rather than many - both initially and for subsequent edits / updates to the template.
Of course it would be possible to create several templates (one for each size). But since it is clear that templates can be combined, it appears sensible to do this - unless the doing of it is horridly complicated

  • Powershell Command to permanently delete items in ALL users Deleted Items folder older than X days.

Does anyone know a powershell command that can be run on Exchange 2010 SP1 that will permanently delete mail in the deleted items folder older than X days for ALL users in a specific database? This should include any user created subfolders in deleted items
    also.
I know that seems bizarre to have user created subfolders in deleted items but we have found that users have discovered that if they create subfolders then their deleted items dont get purged at the regular retention period time.
    Thank You.

  • Move user folder or just large libraries

Sorry if this has been asked before.
Is it better to move the entire User folder or just the Movies, Pictures, Music and mail libraries (They are the largest ones) from the main SSD to a second bigger SSD and leave the home user with the system?
    Thanks

for me and special case with an SSD, leave the minimal ~/Library on the system boot drive
that way it takes advantage of SSD  IOs and gets a lot of hits
makes it easy as you always have an admin account with your system when you clone or restore etc
moving or copying the user account - both can be done and work, but I would always even if you do the relocation, leave the minimal amount, which afterall is less than 10GB
Install TRIM Enabler or another patch utility before you clone and repair the drive booted from another system that has TRIM enabled also.

To successfully relocate your operating system, user accounts and data from one storage device to another, meet the following conditions:
The destination storage device (SSD drive or hard drive) you are migrating to should be physically located in the same computer.  Moving operating system files from one computer to another computer using software not specifically designed for that computer can cause issues due to software, hardware, and firmware version mismatches.
Always back up your storage device with Time Machine or Disk Utility before you start.

  • User Interface is larger than it should be, how can we fix this?

Our marketing director is experiencing an issues with her UI for Acrobat.  Her view of the overall UI is twice as large as it should be.  We uninstalled and checked her preferences but nothing has changed, everything up in the tool bar and stickies are larger than it should be, does anyone have any suggestions or fix's for this matter?
    Thanks,
    Billy

    Hi Billy,
I suspect the text size in the system's control panel is 150%?
She can simply go to Acrobat preferences -> General -> Then change the "Scale for screen resolution" to 100%. This will force the UI to run at 100% like it did before.
Please let me know if this works.
    Thanks,

Any ideas?Im not so good at pws.
    thanks!

    Hi all,
have tried all above command but when i did a check it didnt work that well. What i ended up with is following script:
    $MBX = Get-Mailbox –resultsize unlimited
    $MBX | foreach {New-MailboxExportRequest -Mailbox $_.Identity -ContentFilter {Size -gt '25MB'} -FilePath ('\\server01\pst\ ‘ + $_.Alias + '(' + $_.DisplayName + ').PST')}
Downside with this script is that it export all mailboxes to a pst file.Inside its structure of users folder.
Upside is that it only export mail items that are larger than 25 MB,but you will need to create a search folder to find  items larger than 25mb.
Most of pst files that are exported are less than 2mb in size.So we sorted them by size and delete everything that is less than 25MB.
We then ended up with all mailboxes that have items larger than 25MB.
So if you have over 5000 mailboxes then this wont be recomended. We had over 1200 and the export went fine over night.
Amits recomendation also probably works, but havent tested that one.
    THanks all for your help!

  • Mac seems to print larger than Windows!

Im still fairly new to a Mac having been a Windows PC user for years. I certainly like what I've seen so far. Reasonably competent with Photoshop CS3 and have loaded Mac version.
I have 24" iMac with latest Leopard.
Main printer is Epson R2400 but also use Canon Pixma iP8500 and both worked fine with PC.
I had a number of CS3 files set up in a folder on my Windows PC and copied these on to my Mac. Some involve an image of 7.5" x 5.5" centred (on A4 canvas) and then framed by a thin 1px border of 10" x 8". These are for a particular task I perform and they need to be like that. Also have a lot of straightforward images in folders where I resize them to say 12" x 10" and then print out.
All seem to print out larger than I'm telling them to do. For example, the images with the 1px border of 10" x 8" print out about 0.25" bigger. This isn't a huge problem with the other images but the 1px bordered ones need to be exactly the size I specify (apart from it frustrating me that it won't do what I ask!). What I'm doing is to reduce the scale to about 98% and then it comes out near enough to what I want.
    Anyone have any tips?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thanks to Neil & Jean for your replies.
Neil - I agree - all things being equal, the prints should be identical but can I achieve that? No! Sometimes I can, other times I can't and I think it comes down to my not understanding yet how the Mac settings work. There is an Apple Store locally but it is a couple of hours driving as a round trip and I can't get there for a few days. They won't deal with phone queries.
Jean - you ask if I'm printing borderless. I've tried this but there's another problem. Sometimes when I try this the printer icon in the Dock bounces around and won't let me print, other times it's OK but still prints bigger than it should. On yet more occasions I get an image centred and of the right size.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's obvious to someone else, and it's nothing to do with the hardware. A few days ago I had a full head of hair but that's no longer the case.
Sorry to put you to the trouble but can either of you tell me what settings you use for centred A4 printing? In a previous post I was advised to go into page settings and set all the margins to 0.56 ins. This seemed to work for a while but what do you use? Also what do you enter in Presets in the Print Dialogue box? Is the "Last Used Settings" the one to use or something else (I've tried various settings in this box). Presumably "Last Used Settings" does what it says on the tin - problem is, I don't know the settings to use in the first place!
Apologies for raising such basic stuff.
    Thanks,
    Bob
