User/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist sit

I wanted to restore my old bookmarks file, so I went to t/m and from there to user/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist and hit on restore, took a look at the operation transpiring, thought I saw 13.7 mbs of transfer and went to put on the coffee. when I came back It was still running. What I thought was 13.7 mb's was gigs.
a) Does anyone know what 13.7 gigs of info from a safari bookmarks plist could be??
b) The safari on my desktop still does not have the old bookmarks in it!
c) Where could my old bookmarks be??

Hi
you have the right location - /Users/You/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
I've under 1000 bookmarks & the file is 152K
so if that figure is correct, you've certainly a problem with the file. If there's another copy in TM< check that out, or look at any other backup location.
Failing that, you might be able to inspect the rogue file in hexedit or 0xED to see if it has useable data... it should begin with <i>bplist so if you're very lucky, it would have numerous copies of the same data.
It may be too late, but take a copy of
/Users/You/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/Bookmarks/ just before using Safari any more, in case it comes to that.

  • Safari bookmarks plist file

If you delete the home folder-Lebrary-Safari-bookmarks plist file, does that erase your bookmarks?? Or just reset the memorization of?
I know if you erase your dock plist, it erases all but the factory icons. I couldn't remember if it was the same here.
    Thanks,

    powerbook1701,
Deleting the com.apple.Safari.plist will not change your Safari Bookmarks. They are located at /Users/yourusername/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist.
You do not have to take my word for this, just read How to back up and restore your important Mac OS X 10.4 files.

  • Copied Safari bookmarks.plist but sync to device not taking place

I manually deleted bookmarks from iPhone and iPad.
Then deleted all bookmarks from mac.
Then I added just one bookmark on the mac, and it synced as expected to the iPhone and iPad.
I then copied my original bookmark.plist over to the Safari directory.
This copied and all the bookmarks appear as expected on the Mac.
Then I went to the iPhone and iPad and the bookmarks havent synced across.... do you know why?
I've tried turning OFF Safari and selecting delete from iPhone/iPad, then restart the devices but still the bookmarks dont sync over.  Any ideas why, what have I have wrong?

Tried to turn ON-OFF Safari from Mac's iCloud settings?

  • Safari - bookmarks - plist - corruption

At least once a day and sometimes more Safari replaces my bookmarks with an old version. I recognize it immediately because my bookmark bar will show a version i used a long time ago. Also all of my bookmarks are now messed up.
Luckily i have a good backup and now I create a backup of my plist every morning so when i see this happen I delete all my plist and replace that backup that i know is good.
Does anyone know why does this happens? I can't find a particular "event" that triggers it.
I've even gone so far as to write an automator script to delete the old version and replace with a backup version because it happens so often.
    Thanks,

Did you deselect the box next to Safari in System Preferences > iCloud
And turn off Safari in Settings > iCloud  (for iOS devices)
Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • TS4001 safari bookmarks won't sync (iphone-macbook-icloud)

Have tried everything - restarting, resetting, and couple of other forum tricks..
For instance, on my macbookpro there's no file called com.apple.safari.plist (see other discussion)
    Please help.

The file is there, but is in your user Library, hidden by default in Lion (hold the option key while clicking on the Finder's 'Go' menu to see it). However the relevant file is actually (user)/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist, and in any case you shouldn't tamper with it.
Please see this page for help with difficulties syncing Bookmarks:

  • Safari bookmarks lost - Time Machine not doing his job ?!?!

I recently made a clean install of my system (10.6.6). I backed up everything before, did it again to make sure it was really backed up, and then I inserted the DVD.
Now back in OS X, I wanted to take my bookmarks from my back up. I know where they are /user/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist
The thing is that this bookmark file is like a couple of days old. There are bookmarks that should be there that aren't ! Same thing with the history.plist file : I looked at it while thinking of the last websites I went to before doing the back ups and these websites aren't there too !
What's wrong with Time Machine ? I ******* hate it when machines don't do there job correctly.
Is there a place where these missing bookmarks might be ? Or should I start using something else than Time Machine ? Where's the problem ?
    Thanks in advance.
(edit: sorry, wrong subforum : this belongs in the Mac OS X v10.6)

You might have been bitten by a fairly rare but long-known bug in Snow Leopard. See the yellow box in #D5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Probably no way to tell at this late date whether that was the cause or not.

  • Safari Bookmarks Gone

After migrating to iCloud this morning all my Safari Bookmarks disappeared. I backed them up but should I wait to see if iCloud restores them for me?

If you have a Time Machine (or some other) backup, it should not be difficult. Go to user > library > Safari > Bookmarks.plist, and restore from a version that still has the bookmarks. It happened to me as well and this is how I restored my bookmarks. It works.

  • Deleting safari bookmarks

    Hello,
I recently accidentally checked the box in iTunes that would sync my Mac safari bookmarks with the safari bookmarks on the iPhone. I have since unchecked the box, but I can not get rid of the Mac safari bookmarks that are now in the iPhone. I manually deleted all that I could (by choosing edit and then delete), but there are some that will not delete, such as the "Bookmark Bar" and "Bookmark Menu" that are part of Mac Safari. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hello,
    That's easy:
    1. Quit Safari
    2. Drag Bookmarks.plist (user/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist) to your Desktop.
    3. Launch iTunes and enable buttons sync Safari bookmarks and overwrite on iPhone
    4. Sync your iPhone - this will delete ALL bookmarks and ALL Folders (Your might backup the important ones to your Home Screen)
    5. In iTunes disable the button sync for Safari bookmarks
    6. Put back the Bookmarks.plist from your Desktop to the original place.
    Your done!

  • Lost Safari bookmarks

My husband has managed to lose all of our bookmarks when he "cleaned" them with Intego Washing Machine! I have tried to restore them using Time Machine, but have been unable to find them on the backups when I do a search. Surely Time Machine would have backed them up? I have not set any exclusions in Time Machine. Any help gratefully received!

    Firstly, welcome to the forum!
Your bookmarks are stored in the file found here: User>Library>Safari>bookmarks.plist. You should be able to find it in TM.

  • Safari will not bookmark web sites but Firefox will do so

    Hi,
It sounds like your bookmarks file might have become corrupt.
Before checking the bookmarks file, trash the Safari preferences file just to make sure that is not affecting things:
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
If that makes no difference, try this:
1 Export your Safari bookmarks via the Safari File menu -> Export Bookmarks...
    2 Quit Safari
3 Move /Users/YourUsername/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist onto your Desktop
4 Restart Safari and use File menu -> Import Bookmarks... to import the bookmark file you saved in step 1.
If that does allow you to save sites again, you can trash the Bookmarks.plist file you moved to the Desktop in step 3.
Let us know how you get on and good luck.

  • How can I import old Safari bookmarks from a cache

I had a bit of data disaster when upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Lost my home directory, and now lost the backup too aaaaahhh.
An older backup has what looks like Safari bookmarks in /library/caches/metadata/safari/bookmarks
The files all end with a ".webbookmark" suffix
when opened in TextWrangler they appear as below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Name</key>
    <string>Spanish Tortilla Recipe</string>
    <key>URL</key>
    <string>http://www.spanish-fiestas.com/recipes/tortilla.htm</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
Can I import these into Safari somehow?

You could try pasting them into the current Bookmarks.plist and save with Textwrangler. Not sure if it will work but that may be all you can do. Run plutil after to check for errors via terminal. Relaunch Safari.
    Current bookmarks:
    User/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

  • How to restore safari bookmarks in yosemite??

This question is answered somewhere... but I cannot seem to find the answer and I've seemingly read just about every article on the topic...
I updated my MacBook Pro to Yosemite last night which wiped out all of my Safari bookmarks (which I use daily) and restored bookmarks from 2 years ago. I tried to pull the bookmarks from my iPhone 6 (which were synced to the current and most up to date bookmarks) but somehow wiped those out and synced them with what is now on my MacBook (now not my iPhone and MacBook have the outdated bookmarks from 2 years ago).
I have tried "iPhone Backup Extractor" and "JuicePhone" to pull the bookmarks from previous backups and that did not work. I've even tried going through iCloud, which I rarely use, and ran into some dead ends there.
Please help, I am at my wit's end. Any help would be immensely appreciated!!

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist. Restore that from your backup.

  • Export Safari bookmarks via FireWire target disk mode?

FYI There is NO "export bookmarks" in my Safari File, as there should be.
I need to export my Safari bookmarks via firewire from a G4 to a G5. BUT I can't find anyway to export them. Please help!

What I believe Hawaiian_Starman ment, is once you have the G4 drive mounted on the G5 you can transfer files. It's easy to do this by FireWire Target Disk Mode. The drive will show up with the FW symbol. At that point just copy the old bookmark file into your home directory:
copy "FW Hard Drive"/Users/{username}/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist to ~/Library/Safari/
Where "FW Hard Drive" is the name of the external drive on the desktop. {username} is your old username on the external drive. ~ is you home directory on your internal hard drive.
Make sure you have Safari quit before copying the bookmark file over.
Also if you want to network the two computer together just on a temporary basis, just plug in an ethernet cable between the two. Have both computers booted up. On the G4, (the computer you want to to copy files from) open the System Preferences and turn on Personal File Sharing. On the G5, Select Network from the Go menu. You should see the G4 listed in "My Network" I believe. Just log in and start copying whatever files you need.
Personally, I use Firewire as it's easier and you don't need to worry about file permissions.

  • Sync Safari bookmarks on 2 Mac's

other than sign up for Mobile Me, is there a way to sync (even if manually moving files) 2 different Mac's Safari bookmarks & toolbar?
    thx!

    Hi,
To sync things manually, just ensure this file is copied to the same location between computers:
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > Bookmarks.plist
(I'd highly recommend backing up the file you're about to replace on the respective machine, just in case you overwrite the more recent file )

  • Safari Bookmarks Erased !!

Hello, i've been googling answered to solve this problem for hours, even called Microsoft & Apple for help but nothing. i just restarted my computer. everything was normal. all bookmarks are there, i actually just added another bookmark. so then when the computer comes back on, i open safari & the bookmarks look empty. the only bookmarks are the ones that come with safari (Apple, Yahoo!, Google Maps, YouTube, Wikipedia, News, & Popular). nothing else !! all history is there from this whole week but NO BOOKMARKS !! so i googled how to restore safari bookmarks. they tell me to look for the 'bookmarks.plist' file in safari folder. i followed plenty of instructions like "File"> "Import Bookmarks" & tried to search for the file in (Users/yourUserName/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist) in safari but i cannot find that safari library folder folder. i tried (C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Safari\) but i cant even find the "appdata" folder. so then apple tells me that you can only search for the bookmarks.plist folder on a mac computer... =/ so that means i wasted the whole evening looking for those folders.
now since apple & microsoft basically tell me im on my own... im becoming really desperate. i have hundreds of very important bookmarks saved that have a bunch of job listings & apartments that i really really need.
if anyone can help PLEASE reply
im going to be searching every folder on this **** computer tonight
    :-O
    Thanks in Advance

I was checking on a Vista Ultimate system ... I think the Home versions have shadow copies enabled, but they don't have a user interface.
Given that they are enabled, you might be lucky and track down some previous versions of the Bookmarks .plist using a utility like ShadowExplorer:
    http://www.shadowexplorer.com/
Here's their manual for the utility:
