User log in bogging down network - How to QOS / Bandwidth per computer

Hi,
I am working with a slow network (100mbs), we are having an issue were one user has a large profile and when that user logs in onto a new computer it almost halts the network.
The obvious solution it to install a 1GB switch, which I am going to do but...
This company is rapidly growing and it wont be long before there are several users with large profiles logging in simultaneously.
I would like to implement some sort of QoS policy where each computers connection to the server is limited to a max of say 100mb.
Can this be done with built in GPO's or Free Software.
The site is running a single server 2012 domain controller. that is also the file server.
Thanks in advanced for any help you can give.
Cheers

Hi,
>>Can this be done with built in GPO's or Free Software
Before going further, we can use GPO to configure policy-based QoS to manage network traffic.
Regarding this point, the following articles can be referred to as reference.

Based on the description, I do agree that this should be the way to go.

  • Excessive downloads by an SBS 2008 client bogging down network

Hello.  I have been trying to find the source of a vexing problem on my Small Business 2008 network.  It only seems to affect 2 computers and only while logged in.  One of them is mine, a Windows 8.1 Pro client computer.
The bottom line is my computer is downloading, continuously from the server at two different levels.  One I have lived with for a long time, where I my computer uploads and downloads from the server at 1.5Mbps.
The second, and more concerning, is where it downloads from the server at anywhere from 25-110Mbps.  This occurs about 50% of the time.  I run NetSpeed Monitor so I can track the traffic.  This morning alone, it has downloaded over 320GB from
the server and we have a very small server with only 3 GB on the data drive.  This is not a problem on most other stations in the network.  Only 1 other computer, a laptop, has a similar problem on this scale and I leave it logged off for now.
I can't find any sign of malware on my client computer and scan regularly (with Kaspersky Small Office Security 3).
All of this network traffic is found under one process in both the client computer and the server, System PID 4.  I can provide screen shots if it will help.
Our network performance with the SBS 2008 file server is poor and I think this is contributing.
Please let me know what additional information I can provide to help solve this problem.  I tried Process Explorer, but that provided no useful info.  I'm wondering if it's a rogue service.
The problem is not evident when I first login, but it appears within a few minutes.
Thank you for any suggestions to try,
    Mike

I'm mostly getting these from WireShark:

  • How can I get Firefox to run on a network with multiple users logging on with the same user name and password?

I am trying to get Firefox running on a large network where I have multiple users that log on with the same user name and password. The problem is that when another user logs on to another computer the message comes up that their is already an instance of firefox running on that computer even though there really isn't. Only one instance can be run on the network at one time. I believe it is because firefox stores a shared profile as it thinks it is actually the same user even though it is being run on another computer. I repeat that each user that logs on uses the same user name and password but on different computers.

  • How to set printer margins if using a lot of printers in virtual desktops which are deleted each time users logs off

    Hello,
i am using Firefox version 31. I have a problem with page setup margins. I need to use left
30mm; right 10mm; top 20mm; bottom 20mm. I am using VMware floating assignemnt linked clones
virtual desktops. After users log off - machines are deleted and users next time logs on get's brand
new VDI's. Users gets printers to VDI using login script from Active Directory.
    Option Explicit
    Dim strPrinterUNC, objNetwork
    strPrinterUNC = "\\some_server\printer_number_1"
    Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
    objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection strPrinterUNC
    WScript.Sleep (20000)
    objNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter strPrinterUNC
    Set objNetwork = Nothing
Each user have different logon script, because they use different printers (different printer names e.g. \\some_server\printer_number_2 ; \\some_server\printer_number_3 and etc. Page setup margins in Internet Explorer are ok. But how to make Firefox page setup margins as i need? For other options i have
used CCK2 Wizard 2.0.4 tool. It worked fine. Maybe i can put some information in C:\Program
Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref\autoconfig.js I have some usefull data in it allready. I
have found info that: "Setting print margins is done in the printer settings". I have a lot of
printers, so i can not set printer margins individualy for each of them. Now mozilla shows top,
bottom, right, left each 12.7 mm. What should i do if i have a lot of printers in enterprise
    environment?

Firefox has a profile folder that has preferences to save this. But the config that would need to be changed is:
print. save_print_settings = True - (default): Save the print settings after each print job
    Locking that preference: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences]
    Or done manually:
#In order to check the margins, we need to go to ''File'' > ''Page Setup''.
#Once this is done, switch to the ''Margins & Header/Footer'' tab.
#Check what's set there under ''Margins''.
The following are the default values for ''Margins'':
Check these values accordingly and change them if necessary.

  • How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator

RE: How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator AND/OR how to repair drive with "Invalid catalog PEOF"
    Hello,
My MacBook Pro computer’s hard drive is not booting.
I booted with the base operating system and ran Disk utilities and I got the following messages:
        Invalid catalog PEOF
The volume could not be verified completely.
This disk needs to be repaired.
Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk,
        and restore your backed-up files.
The problem is that I have a couple of USERS set up on this computer, and it won’t let me backup the files of the second user.  The folders are locked and I can’t access them, even though I am logged in as the administrator.
I made a boot disk on my other computer ( a MacPro Early 2008 ) desktop computer with the DiskWarrior 4.4 updater,
but it won’t boot on my MacBook Pro.
How can I backup these user files so that I can copy them back once I fix the drive?
or better yet,  How can I repair the Invalid catalog PEOF on this drive?
Thank you in advance for your time!
    Bill

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition which will erase all data.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?
    thx, j

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.

  • Entire Mac slows down every day, especially if more than one user logged in

Mac runs fine at the start of each day (after turning it on), but slows down by evening. iPhoto is typically at a crawl at that point, and I can't have more than one user logged in at a time, or the whole system takes forever to do anything. I've restarted, repaired disk, repaired disk permissions, run Cocktail, checked for viruses (VirusBarrier). It's easy to restore normal speed with these moves, but same problem every day. I have 24 GB left on this hard drive--is that too little?
Should I try erasing hard drive and restoring from Time Machine? Should I reload Mac OS X from discs?
    Advice much appreciated. Thanks.

    you do the math
    this will help:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

  • No network user log in at login window when over WiFi??

I can only log in as a network user (home directory on server instead of local) from computers that are connected via wired Ethernet, but not on computers connected via WiFi. From any computer a local logged in user can access server resources -- they just can't from the login window. It is as though WiFi is only enabled once logged in (however it still doesn't work even if I use Fast User Switching to get a login window.)
Anyone experiencing this problem and found a solution?
As a secondary issue, I haven't been able to figure out how to automount shares via any technique nor have I found an explanation of how to do it in the manuals. Enable Automount in Server Admin doesn't seem to do it for "Shared Library Folder" however at least something appears in /Network/Servers for "User Home Folders and Group Folders, although it isn't mounted. I've also tried Workgroup Manager, Perferences, Login Items, adding shares there, also to no avail. All the shares will mount via client system command so the sharing does seem to be working.

I don't have my wireless entwork set up yet (no one really needs it), so can't help with that issue. Although, I seem to recall Fast User Switching has issues with network accounts anyway, so that issue may be unrelated to your original WiFi issue.
As for automounting, you should have it set up in Server Admin first (as you seem to already). Then you need to also set it up in WGM much like it seems you tried, but make sure you're doing it from a client machine and not from the server so it populates with the proper path info (or you could correct it in the Details section if you know what you need, but that's unnecessarily cumbersome). Also, make sure the "Authenticate selected share point with..." is checked for the share as well. Of course, if you're already doing this from the client, then I've no clue as it seems everything should be fine. That's how mine are set up with no issues, although I also have them set up on the dock, but that should be irrelevant just for mounting purposes.

  • How can I print from my iPhone or iPad to a Ricoh printer with User Log Codes turned on?

Our company recently purchased a Ricoh printer and implemented the User Log Code feature to track whos printing and how much. Our biggest problem is that no apps we can locate allow for log code input and therefore no mobile devices can print. Is there any work around for this? Any app that allows the input of log codes?
    Thank you!

That's way beyond the scope of this forum. There are, though, print server monitors that would allow you to track printing from workstations on your network that are not connecting directly to the printer via WiFi.

  • Network not available until user logged in

I am setting up Mac Mini / OS X 10.9.5 as a local web and build server. I have set in place LaunchDaemons to run Apache and Jenkins on startup, however I can't reach these services, when the mac server boots up or reboots. Can't ping the server either. Looks like the network interface is not connected to network until the user logs in. Tried both Wifi and Ethernet, same problem. Also, I can't start the server with Automatic Login and then lock the screen, because FileVault is enabled and Automatic Login is not available. Turning off FileVault is not an option. If the user logs in network is available and all services are reachable.
How can I enable the network on boot without logging in the user?

  • How to enable multiple users logging in to the same client machine?

    Hi,
We have our home directories shared from the server (using AFP) and this allows our users to log in to any machine via the normal console login.
But if you try to remotely login to a machine with ssh, and another user is already logged in at the machine, then you get the error message:
Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/machinename/Users/keith: No such file or directory
I can connect (via) ssh, only if no user is logged in at the console. If I connect with ssh when no users are logged in, and then a user logs in at the console, then this unmounts the home directory for the ssh user.
I have read about the mnthome command, and if I try running this (from my ssh login whilst there is a console login) then I get the error message:
Error: Mount failed with error 1 Operation not permitted
I'm assuming that multiple ssh logins must be allowed somehow? Can you only do this if you share your home directories with NFS (in this case, I understand that all home directories always appear mounted on each client)???
    Any help appreciated,
    Keith

Thanks for the info. I really thought that this would be a fixable problem. I also thought that it might work when two different users both logged in using ssh only (i.e. when there is no console login). But this also causes problems for the second ssh login.
What practical work-arounds have people tried? The respondent to your other post (linked to above) suggested that NFS sharing might work, only that ssh logins still don't mount the home directory. Is this the case?
    Thanks for the speedy answer.
