User lost after 10.4.11 update in a macbook.

I've updated from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 in my macbook intel. Process finished ok.
I have 2 admin users. The user from where I made the update is not usable. When I try to login with that user it shows a plan blue screen with the mouse pointer. The other user is working fine.
I've tried with Safe Mode, but when I click on the bad user, the screen bounces to the login box. There's no way to enter to that users. Which is a big problem. Of course I have tried with Combo Update, Disk Utility, etc, etc.
Any clues on this strange behavior?

Can't explain the behavior, except to say, stuff happens. Log into the good account, delete the bad one, saving data (disk image put into /Users/Deleted Users, create a new admin account using the same username/password combo, log into it, mount the saved data image, and transfer stuff from the image to the account.

HELP! Lost User Folder After 10.4.7 Update!!
I did everything I normally do before an upgrade.
    Fix premissons, etc etc etc..
Ran the combo updater & rebooted....
Checking my HDD & noticed I lost
my "jtmadman" folder in my User folder.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks
    eMac 1.25 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Do you still have any of the normal user subfolders
visible in the Finder sidebar, like "Movies" or
    "Pictures"?
    No, I don't. I can access it with A-dock.
Is this an admin or regular account? How
many user accounts on the Mac?
    Admin account, 1 user.
How about login items? If you go to System
Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items tab, what is
    on the list?
    My login are:
    A-dock
    PrefsMenu
    Palm Desktop Background
    Fkey Listener
    LCCDaemon
I noticed when I use thinkertool and
click Show hidden & sys files, my
"jtmadman" folder is there in my User folder.
    Why is it hidden??
    Thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Lost all bookmarks in my user profile after latest microsoft windows update on 5/15/15

Last night at 2am when I went to hibernate my computer as I usually do, I saw that there were some automatic windows updates to be installed. Since I have Windows XP and Microsoft has supposedly ceased support, I cancelled the hibernation and got on the internet to make sure that Microsoft was pushing out these updates and what they were for. Everything seemed kosher so I closed the internet and all of my programs, and proceeded to shut down the computer allowing the updates to install.
Much to my chagrin this morning, I discovered that my user profile had essentially been wiped out. The user profile name was still there and the password still worked, but when I got in the whole profile had been restored to its initial settings. Most of my files that I had on the desktop are gone and when I launched FireFox, it had been reverted to its originally downloaded version (years ago) and all of my many, many bookmarks were gone. I did find some files in My Documents, but the bulk of the documents were not under my documents and appear to be gone.
I did find some files in a TEMP folder and saved all of those. Fortunately I did back up my computer about a month ago, but stupidly did not back up my bookmarks. I do have a back up from a couple of years ago that I can retrieve, but everything since then appears to be gone. There are many files in the TEMP file that I cannot identify and am hoping and praying that my bookmarks are still in the midst of them. I did a search for Mozilla FireFox profiles through my dos prompt, but it only found a default profile that is likely associated with my admin user account that I generally do not work on for security purposes.
I have searched all day on the internet for solutions with no luck. I would be most appreciative if anyone can provide some guidance that may be of help.

  • Authorizations for the users lost after applying SP15

    Hi,
Is it possible that after applying any support package, authorizations of the users gets lost?
Because when we imported SP15, authorizations of the users are affected...
If yes, what are the precautions to be taken before importing any support package to avoid this....
The problem is that as a user of the system who does not have full access,
when they try to run a report either through the Analyzer or through the
web all they get is "No Authorisation".  Prior to SP15 being applied they
did have access to the system.
Now how to restore the authorizations....
    Thanking you,
    Tarun Brijwani

    Tarun,
This is a normal occurence with SAP support packs and I suggest you to open up an SAP note with SAP support and see if they respond to it. I exactly don't remember the note number but I think there is a comprehensive note that describes in detail about what you are getting in SP and what might be affected. Try installing Service pack stacks and I think SAP releases these once in a quarter and these are more error proof. ( from my experience that's what I gathered). Anyways, hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Bobby

  • USB lost after 10.4.5 update

This only appears to be a problem on my G4 Powerbook, which I updated yesterday to 10.4.5. Today when I plugged in my SD card reader nothing happened. Then I unplugged my wireless USB Kensington mouse and tried that port and nothing happened. Then when I plugged my USB wireless mouse adaptor back in, nothing happened. So now it appears to I have no connectivity through either USB port, at least with a card reader or USB mouse, both of which are bus-powered. Any thoughts?
    ds

After updating Mac OS system, I noticed USB camera connection and card readers were not recognized, I tried several card readers and nothing happens. Do you have any suggestion or idea? I really think it is something related to the upgrade, maybe something Apple should fix in the Mac OS upgrade after 10.4.5 and 10.4.6 because before that it worked perfectly.

  • Paid for apps lost after 2.0.2 update!

I updated to 2.0.2 last night and found that all my paid-for apps have now disappeared from my phone as well as from iTunes!
How can I get them back? I had at least 12-15 and don't want to pay for them twice!

    Here's the official how-to:
*How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
    Alternatively,
Call AppleCare iPhone...wait time can be 10-20 minutes so be sure you have time. Usually less than 10 minutes during the morning though.
Once you get to them, tell them the issue or ask directly for "iTunes Music Store Billing Support". If it shows up in your Purchase History (in iTunes click Store > View My Account then find the Purchase History button) they can set it up for re-downloading. From there, they'll direct you to click "Check for Purchases". They should instantly start downloading again, free of charge. Works for music and movies if you can prove you bought them.
Or visit www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser and type away. They email back in about 2 days.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Aperture 3: GPS data gets lost after 'Update from Master'

My library contains photos in JPEG format that I geotag in Places, then I save the metadata with 'Write IPTC Metadata to Master'. The problem I have is, that the GPS data gets lost after I do an 'Update from Master', even if I saved the metadata before. I'm having this problem with referenced and managed photos and all my JPEGs from several different cameras. The only way to permanently store the GPS info into my photos seems to be to export the geotagged photos as versions.
Does anybody has the same problem or knows how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

Use Houdah geo (http://www.houdah.com) to write location data back to the EXIF. It's interface is very similar to Places (Google maps and pins) and you can interface with the Aperture library. It's a bit of a pain, but if you need it done now rather than wait for an Aperture 3 fix, then...

  • Many logins & passwords were lost after last update

Automatic login and passwords were lost after the last firefox update. Or should I say would not work until I re-entered them.
A search found they were still there, plus the new entries I saved.
Other logins were lost totally, no passwords were lost.
I did send an immediate report to tech support but heard nothing.
Is it safe to update the new version or am I having to re-enter my logins and passwords again.
I have used firefox for many years as my main browser, I mostly only want to use a different browser when I want to open two different email accounts.

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
If a website decides to invalidate such a remember-me cookie after noticing an update (e.g. 6.0.1 to 7.0.1) then you will have to re-enter your credentials to create a new cookie.

  • I installed an software Update on my MacBook Pro and after that my laptop wont reboot passed the gray screen?

After installing a software update on my Macbook Pro, it would not reboot passed the gray screen and then would shut down.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to a Mac Pro tower, not to any other model. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • External monitor Syncmaster 2494SW not working after 10.6.7 update

External monitor Samsung Syncmaster 2494  SW stopped working after 10.6.7 update on 2011 MacBook Pro. I'm using miniDP-DVI adapter. The monitor shown correctly in Display Properties with right modes and name. MackBook recognizes connection but the monitor goes to PowerSave mode (LED indicator blinks).
Safemode boot, SMC reset, PRAM reset did not help.
Exactly the same setup works perfectly under 10.6.6.

HERE IS THE EASY FIX SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM GUYS:
I have an 15inch MacBook Pro that I've just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on.
Prior to this install, I've had it hooked up to my Samsung SyncMaster 2243 via an Apple MDP/VGA adapter and a third party VGA cable. It has been flashing on and off a black screen every now and then for the past 2 years and I googled that it was just a crappy communication between the MBP and the Samsung... but now since installing 10.6.3, the Samsung display just flashes the desktop for a second then turns black for good - occationally flashing analogue/digtal prompt display. Tried everything for hours. Nothing worked, thought I was gonna have to buy a new all Apple VGA lead then came across Michael's above solution. Tried it and it worked IMMEDIATLY!!! And the monitor doesn't flash black anymore AT ALL!! Whoo-hoo!! Thanks heaps.
    WHAT TO DO TO FIX:
Go to => System Preferences  => Energy Saver => change graphic settings to Higher Performace.
    Cheers!!

  • Lost all photos after iphoto latest iphoto update

I have just lost all my photos in iphoto after latest update. Anyone knows whats going on?
Over 3,000 photos for last 15 years and I am devastated not forgetting I relly on apple as I own most of their products.
I see a trend in apple updates, deleting of user data as similar thing happened with email when I updated to OSX Mountain Lion way back.
Apple should know not forget user data is more importnat than updates as there is no point owning a device that will not give me confort that my data is safe.

    Hi Terence,
I installed iPhoto Library Manager, and it's a great program, however I am still having issues.
I discovered today in the Day One App, as well as Mail that the Photo Browser contains the missing photos, projects etc. See image below. I have no idea where these photos are kept and when I search for the name of a photo, the photo does not appear.
I clicked on Aperture and it would like me to Upgrade, and I'm not sure if I should, please advise.
Lastly in the iPhoto Library Manager, when I select add library and click on Aperture I get the messsage attached.
Do you have any insight on this.  It looks like the photos are there, I just don't know where to look.
    Thanks for your help!

Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options. I was able to select the account under "parental controls", but again, could not delete it. Why Apple? Why?!!????

SOLVED Ok. I actually was able to disable it. I had to actually log in as the guest user to make it accessible in the preference window. Then I disabled it and logged out. Apologies if this was obvious for some people, but I have had some sort of issue with something every update since Snow Leopard.
