FCP User Manual viewer

OK, this seems like it wouldn't be a FCP question, but hopefully someone has the answer:
I needed to look something up in the manual, so I went Help --> User Manual and it opened up in Adobe Reader. It used to open up in Preview. Preview has a much faster search engine (and I like the interface better for this purpose). Any way to get the manual to open up in Preview again?
I tried looking for the manual (and the one for Motion) in my system (to try and do a "Open Always With" command) but didn't know where it's located (or if it will work). Thought it was in /Library/Application Support but it wasn't.
Any ideas? Or am I just being too picky?

The location should be /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Final Cut Pro Help
That is, with the Applications folder open in a Finder window, control-click on the Final Cut Pro icon and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu, then navigate. Once you've gotten to the Final Cut Pro Help subfolder, you can select the user manual and do the whole 'Open with' thing...

Motion 3 user manual hard copy

Is there a hardcopy available of Motion 3 User Manual?

I till cost you $50-$300 to get it printed at Kinko's or Office Depot.
Use full size paper, don't try to scrimp by using half sheets. The illustrations and captions go all to heck when scaled down.
Print both sides, punch for 3-ring binder.
Call around to find the best printing deal but I do not recommend trying to print it yourself unless you have access to a very fast laser that will duplex.

Any Way to Save a pdf User Manual?

I seem to recall that in previous versions of FCS apps, including Motion, you had the Help option to open (usually in Preview) a pdf User Manual. From there, via the Print dialog, you could do a "Save as PDF", into the folder of your choice.
I often like to have a searchable User Manual which I can access without having to launch the app itself. So I created a special folder into which I would save separate pdf copies of user manuals which had been incorporated into the apps themselves. But in Motion 4, all I'm seeing is an HTML Help Document, and trying to "Save as PDF" via the Print window only seems to let me save the one currently visible page, nothing more.
So -- is there still any way to create a separate, searchable User Manual for Motion (and for the other FCS3 apps), or have even pdf help documents gone the way of those two-ton paper manuals of yesteryear?

Yeah, the PDF functionality is lost within the FCS3 apps themselves. The Pro Apps team wanted to be able to continually update the Help files, so they were made (exclusively) web-based.
That resulted in a bit of an outcry. Thankfully, the team listened, we have to now visit the Help pages for each app (here's the one for Motion) and open/download from the View as PDF link.

Compressor User Manual ??

I bought Final Cut Studio - and I'm VERY pleased with it.
But one thing puzzles me.
There's enough manuals with it to get me to sleep for many months to come - FOUR hefty books on FCP alone.
But NOTHING, not even a postcard on how to use Compressor, possibly the most complex of all the software in the suite.
I know there's a useful help "manual" but there's nothing like a hard copy which you can take anywhere (even to bed) and study.
Does anyone know a reason for the lack of a Compressor manual?
(Or did someone forget)?

True, no hard-copy manual with Compressor 2 and I believe that is the way Compressor has always shipped since day-one, version-one. I don't know why, other than that it saves some expense and shipping weight and (of course) you can update a PDF with a simple download. Also, having the user manual in a PDF format allows you quick access and search which is probably a more useful feature for a tool like Compressor -- since Compressor is based mostly on a few numbers and settings whereas Final Cut Pro is nearly a "world" unto itself.

Missing User Manual for Acrobat 9.0

Along with my recent Design Premium upgrade, I ordered the Adobe CS4 Design Premium User Guide. And much to my surprise, it's complete documentation in separate books! Great!! I didn't know anyone still knew how to do that. So I get a pile of books about six inches high - and there's no manual for Acrobat. Completely missing from the CS4 group. What gives?
Logged a customer service query, after a couple of conversations with some CSRs, found out that Adobe doesn't supply a printed user manual along with all the other applications. Here's the excuse I was given: "The decision was made to not print the manual because we wanted to conserve on paper. Adobe is trying to encourage a paperless world, and our Acrobat product is an important part of that task. So we thought it was counter-productive to actually print the document." I am not making this up. Two of their CSRs stated the same thing, which makes me think that this is a "talking point" they've been given from someone in product marketing to cover the fact that someone screwed up and didn't get the books printed.
I finally got one of the CSRs to admit that, in fact, they actually did produce the manual - just like the others - and you can download it yourself. After a good bit of search, I finally found where it's located. In case you're looking for the same thing, here it is:

It's the full 519 pages of documentation that should have been published - just like all the others I bought. This is just an oversight by someone at Adobe, plain and simple. The CSR told me that I couldn't order the printed bound version. But something tells me this is probably not the case - Adobe's probably just behind in getting books like this one published.
If anyone knows another avenue to communicate with someone at Adobe who's better informed than the CSRs I spoke to earlier, please let me know. I actually have more faith in Adobe to do the right thing and make good on sending me the book that I've already, in essence, purchased from them. If they're behind, that's okay. We all make mistakes. But to give the lamest of excuses is intolerable. Insulting, to say the least.
And someone in their marketing department ought to know better.

Documentation rant (slightly) -- no user manual in PDF?!?

I realize that in this day and age, manuals are bulky, extraneous and heavy. Oh, and not to mention they are also made out of paper. No big deal, honest.
I'm okay that there are no paper manuals, but why why WHY did they not include a standard PDF version of the user manual?
It's not even an option in the help menu anymore.
In looking at where the L8 manual is supposed to be, nested deep within the contents of the application package -- and voila -- instead of a simple, easy to use (and print) PDF file there are loads and loads of ... HTML files?!?
Does Apple really think that opening Safari (or Firefox) is going to be any faster than using Preview?
Who signed off on this?
Sorry, it's a rant I know. If there is another solution, like buying bound copies of the manuals, I will do it. But why did they take away the pdf?!?

The manual format is not acceptable it needs to be pdf, browsers suck at displaying manuals. Its like Apple is reverting to Adobe help system.

I want to be able to read the manual using a scroll wheel not clicking a mouse button every time I'm ready for a new paragraph.
I want search limited to the manual I am reading, not all Pro applications. Even when selecting Logic Pro from the drop down it still searches all pro apps.
When I search I want to see the context of the word, not the paragraph heading.
When I am reading the manual I do not care about all of the on-line links. I am not interested in going to the Apple Training Center on the web. Get the idea. I want the manual optimized for my use at learning about Logic.
There must be someone new in charge of manual creation at Apple. If so, they should be fired.

How to get the first month of the year inputed by user manually

Just like the subject, I 'd like to get the first month of the year inputed by user manually, but don't know how to set the variable, please help.
For example, user execute a query and input the value of variable Year = 2010, and what I want to get is 201001 into another variable, so that I can use this variable to setup another selection.

Hi Andy,
1) U will create a user input varaible for year and say it is ZYEAR.
2) U will create another variable for calmonth which has processing type : customer exit ..single value ...mandatory ....say ZCMONTH.
This needs to be populated using the year( user inputted ) and calmonth '001'
This code will fetch the user input value into ZYEAR and append '001' to the user input value and the value
will be passed to the ZCMONTH varaible...
Sample Code is....
When 'ZCMONTH'.
IF I_STEP = 2.
     READ TABLE I_T_VAR_RANGE WITH KEY VNAM = 'ZYEAR'.
     IF SY_SUBRC = 0.
                L_S_RANGE-LOW = I_T_VAR_RANGE-LOW.

Do I need FCP X to use Motion 5?

I am trying to make a video with a moving green screen like the one seen here. I know I can do it using Motion, but do I need FCP X to use Motion? Can I just use Motion 5 to make my video?
I am an not a pro. I just make some home videos for friends and family occasionally. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro and I use iMovie for everything.

User Manual

Hi! I am a new Mac user having just recently ordered the new MacBook Pro 17. I should have it by the end of the week. I ordered it with Aperture 2 preinstalled and realize that it does not come with the printed User Manual. Considering how much money I have spent on this set-up it doesn't seem to be asking much to also get the printed Manual. I know that an electronic version is included but I really would like something I can leaf through while I am learning the application. Does anyone know if there is a simple way to get the printed manual from Apple? Thanks.

there isn't a printed manual with any version
either take the PDF to a local kinkos or just grab the APTS book (which is a better option)

How do u make FCP remember to keep motion parameters in the viewer exposed?

At work I have a computer running FCP 6. When I open, say, the Crop parameter of a certain clip in the Motion tab of the Viewer, then leave the viewer to do something else, when I come back to my clip's Motion tab, the Crop settings are exposed (ie FCP remembers that the parameters were accessed before). But at home, on my FCP 7, when I try to do the same thing, the software keeps hiding the Crop parameters and I have to press the arrow to expose them every time anew.
Is there a setting somewhere in FCP to keep the Motion parameters exposed?

where on my computer am I suppose to make the individual picture files and have them to upload on my ipod touch.... I do have a photo library on my computer, but in the photo tab in itunes for the ipod touch and there is nothing checked for syncing, cause when I do check it it always says its going to replace everything i have in my photo library on my ipod touch..... So how am i suppose to have it checked and have it NOT replace pictures on it????
Also I cannot make more photo albums into my ipod touch, it just replaces the one album every time....
I am very frustrated cause I have tried the manuals and the apple support help etc and nothing pertains to my exact issue.....
