newgrp, rlogin, rsh, root directories, rcp, login, keychain fles ???
Am I right in thinking this does not bode well?
pato

appreciate your input, but where in that list do you see any of the following items which were changed?
> newgrp, rlogin, rsh, root directories, rcp, login, keychain files ???
with all due respect, maybe someone a bit more knowledgable could weigh in on this?
thanks,

Ran the combo updater & rebooted....
Checking my HDD & noticed I lost
my "jtmadman" folder in my User folder.
    Any ideas???

    No, I don't. I can access it with A-dock.

  • User lost after 10.4.11 update in a macbook.

I've updated from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 in my macbook intel. Process finished ok.
I have 2 admin users. The user from where I made the update is not usable. When I try to login with that user it shows a plan blue screen with the mouse pointer. The other user is working fine.
I've tried with Safe Mode, but when I click on the bad user, the screen bounces to the login box. There's no way to enter to that users. Which is a big problem. Of course I have tried with Combo Update, Disk Utility, etc, etc.
Any clues on this strange behavior?

Can't explain the behavior, except to say, stuff happens. Log into the good account, delete the bad one, saving data (disk image put into /Users/Deleted Users, create a new admin account using the same username/password combo, log into it, mount the saved data image, and transfer stuff from the image to the account.

  • Repairing permissions after 10.5.8 update extreme oops maybe???

Ok I understand that there is still the issue of Repairing permissions regarding hard code links no big deal. Apple still has not fixed this in this update.
The problem that I have at the moment is understanding why the dbase is not updated properly it appears.
After applying the update to two separate machines both intel based and running Repair permissions through Disk Utility which is what I always do after any os update, there were some very strange oddities that pertains to core files and even after reboots and rechecking seferal times there is no change.
Someone at Apple messed up I think and did not update the permissions dbase during or after the update. I also used the Combo updater versus the smaller regular update as I always do to to avoid some intermittent occasional install problems some tend to see when using the smaller updaters.
Anyone else seeing this and how big of an issue is it to have it show for core files permissiona "should be ?--------- ," ??

Yea it is strange, I did not have the time on the two operating systems to do a proper backup so I can not go back as you did.
I did reapply the delta update though over the top of one of the Combos and although I ended up with less apparently than with the original combo update there were still several.
One thing I did do was to go to the file level of this one which now reads "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonC ore.framework/Versions/A/_CodeSignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------
When inspecting that one the in the info window it now shows no more system or wheel and only everyone with the item marked as no access.
Considering that this is within the folder now called "_CodeSignature" and the root folder above this folder which is "A" has a CodeResources file inside it which has all the normal permissions set properly. I am wondering if this is something that was actually moved to this new folder instead of deleted and that the permissions tool may be looking at this file as it would with the parent folder if that makes sense. If this is part of the security updates portion why wouldn't Apple just remove it or is there something else going on that I am missing.
On the other side to note is that all of the files that are giving this error with permissions in the core files are all inside a folder called "_CodeSignature".
This may actually be nothing to worry about as it may be a way for the security patches to work properly to ensure the corrected resources are in place, If so though why are they not getting deleted with the updates as one would expect and why would this keep reappearing constantly and are these files in the "_CodeSignature" folders actually able to be trashed manually if Apple doesn't need them there and if they do then why are they set for no access?
    Confusion is a wonderment uh?

You are absolutely correct. I got it backwards.
    I checked on my machine
    [16:15 root@mpro] ls -al /usr/bin/ruby
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 76 Feb 27 22:23 /usr/bin/ruby -> ../../System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/Current/usr/bin/ruby
    This is the actual binary:
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 38304 Dec 6 2007 ruby
As you can see, 'ruby' appears to be from a pristine installation. (just looking at the date).
Maybe the original poster has installed some additional development packages from Apples Dev Site.

  • Lost all bookmarks in my user profile after latest microsoft windows update on 5/15/15

Last night at 2am when I went to hibernate my computer as I usually do, I saw that there were some automatic windows updates to be installed. Since I have Windows XP and Microsoft has supposedly ceased support, I cancelled the hibernation and got on the internet to make sure that Microsoft was pushing out these updates and what they were for. Everything seemed kosher so I closed the internet and all of my programs, and proceeded to shut down the computer allowing the updates to install.
Much to my chagrin this morning, I discovered that my user profile had essentially been wiped out. The user profile name was still there and the password still worked, but when I got in the whole profile had been restored to its initial settings. Most of my files that I had on the desktop are gone and when I launched FireFox, it had been reverted to its originally downloaded version (years ago) and all of my many, many bookmarks were gone. I did find some files in My Documents, but the bulk of the documents were not under my documents and appear to be gone.
I did find some files in a TEMP folder and saved all of those. Fortunately I did back up my computer about a month ago, but stupidly did not back up my bookmarks. I do have a back up from a couple of years ago that I can retrieve, but everything since then appears to be gone. There are many files in the TEMP file that I cannot identify and am hoping and praying that my bookmarks are still in the midst of them. I did a search for Mozilla FireFox profiles through my dos prompt, but it only found a default profile that is likely associated with my admin user account that I generally do not work on for security purposes.
I have searched all day on the internet for solutions with no luck. I would be most appreciative if anyone can provide some guidance that may be of help.

  • Everyone:  This time repair your permissions before and after 10.4.8 update

    Hello All,
Just a reminder for all those who are updating to OS 10.4.8.
While many people do ignore all the recommendations that we provide and still come through fine, please do consider observing the following to minimize your problems.
To insure the best chance of success, please consider downloading the Combo Updater for your computer instead of using Software update.
For PowerPC Mac's, this would be:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
For Intel Macs, this would be:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html
The benefit of using the Combo Updater, is that it replaces all system files that have been changed since the last major release (in this case since 10.4.0).
So, if you have any system files that have become corrupted, the Combo Updater will very likely over-write those, and spare you the headaches that come from updating an operating system that has problems that just haven't come to the surface yet.
In many cases, you can have problems that have not come to the surface, and the "Delta" or Software update method will bring them out to bite you. The reason for this, is because the Delta / Software Update version only changes files that have changed since 10.4.7. And, it works more in a "patch" fashion. So, if there is a problem in one of the files being patched, then the update will cause you some major headaches.
Going with the larger "Combo" update over-writes almost all the System files with clean versions instead of just making patches. So, it is frequently much more successful.
Now, with that said, before you update, you should make sure your permissions are all set properly. If your permissions are wrong, then your update will likely have trouble.
So, go into "Disk Utility" in the Applications --> Utilities folder and repair your permissions.
Start by selecting your hard drive on the left window of Disk Utility. Then, go down and click on the "Repair Permissions" button. Once it's completed, then exit Disk Utility.
Now, it is also extremely important to make sure all running programs are closed before you install any system update. So, go ahead and restart your computer.
Restarting will make sure that all programs are closed, and that nothing weird is stuck in memory before you install.
If you have anti-virus programs running, then disable or deactivate them first (you don't want them interpreting this as unauthorized modification or it might prevent certain files from being updated).
Now, with your computer freshly restarted, install the Combo updater you downloaded.
When prompted, click on the "Restart" button when prompted.
Now, the computer will startup, but sit at the spinning wheel for several minutes. It will eventually restart again on it's own. And, finally, it will start-up all the way and you'll be back at your desktop.
Now, immediately go back to Disk Utility and repair permissions as you did in the previous step. You will likely see several permissions that have been repaired. In my case, I had dozens of CoreAudio, Widgets, and other permissions that needed repair. Once permissions have been repaired, go ahead and restart one last time. This makes sure that everything is set and then cleaned-up.
Once it reboots, begin using it and enjoy.
Now, this may sound like a lot. But, it really is simple. It just reads like a lot of stuff.
And, of course, you are free to ignore this and just install it however you like. Many people have their own ideas here. And, many people say you don't have to do anything to prepare. But, for those that have had huge problems in the past, these extra steps will usually save you the major headaches that tons of people inevitably have with every new update.
Anyway, I hope this helps to save at least a few of you any problems. If you don't agree with the ideas above, just ignore it and do as you like.
But, if you want a little extra piece-of-mind and a better chance at success, then please consider exercising this extra caution.
And, for the record, I have updated my machines to 10.4.8 (within minutes of the update being available) and it is working perfectly smooth on my systems.
I hope you find this helpful.

mhunter, thanks and good that you take the time and effort again to remind everyone that it does take an effort to do a major OS update, to ensure maximum stability.
So far my 10.4.8 Update is a-okay, and I have had many trouble-free updates since installing 10.4
I too practice rigourously and "religiously" before and after an OS or Security Update, but I normally use Software Update, equally successful:
    1. Before Startup, UNPLUG all external devices, left only keyboard, mouse and internet connection, unless they are all wireless.
    2. Startup, disable NAV if any, Repair Disk Permission. Restart again, Repair Permission again.
    3. Do Software Update
    4. Restart, Repair Permission
    5. Shutdown, plug everything back
    6. Startup Mac, use Mac
So far these steps have been keeping all my macs both at home and at work very very stable and healthy.
Maybe, just maybe if everyone here, all mac users were to follow these steps, yes they can be a hassle, yes they can take up some time, but then there will be less less complains and "blasts" at Apple, just because perhaps themselves have been too careless or negligance in performing updates.
    Cheers

It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options. I was able to select the account under "parental controls", but again, could not delete it. Why Apple? Why?!!????

SOLVED Ok. I actually was able to disable it. I had to actually log in as the guest user to make it accessible in the preference window. Then I disabled it and logged out. Apologies if this was obvious for some people, but I have had some sort of issue with something every update since Snow Leopard.

Re: Macbook Pro 10.6.8 RAM Upgarde to 8 GB
The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

After renaming my MAC hard drive, Acrobat, Illustrator and Bridge fail to launch. Acrobat returns the error message "An internal error occurred". I've checked this out and it seems related to user permissions. The version is Acrobat X. My machine has multiple user accounts. Any help would be appreciated. I renamed the drive to its original name but to no effect. RR

    I resolved the issue.
The problem is indeed a permissions issue with the Adobe Application Support folder.
First, in MAC OS Lion the ~/Library/ folder is hidden by default. You must unhide it in order to proceed. (if it is already visible in your ~/User/ folder, proceed to Step 4.)
    Next launch the Terminal application.
At the command line, paste the following command line: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
    Go to /Users/youruserid/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Get info on the ~/Adobe folder and reset your permissions to read/write and apply to all enclosed folders
    Problem solved. RR

  • Unrepairable "different" Permissions After Updating iTunes

    Hello -
First, I need to confess that I am not an Apple computer guru. However, up until today, I've never experienced any major problems with either of my two Mac computers.
    Ugh. . .
I updated both the iTunes and Front Row programs on my MacBook Pro today. I did what I usually do after performing any major update or upgrade, I repair the permissions via the Disk Utility program. This utility almost always repairs any of the changes that may have occurred during the updating/upgrading process. It did not work this time, unfortunately.
I am unable to repair the dozen or so differing permissions that the Disk Utility tells me exists. I click the "Repair Disk Permissions" and when it's finished it tells me, "Permissions repair complete". I, then, click "Verify Disk Permissions" and receive the same messages as before; that there are many differing permissions.
So. . . here are my questions:
    1) Will this apparent problem of differing permissions effect the overall performance and stability of my computer in any way? (I use the MacBook Pro mainly as a slave computer for instrumental software plug-ins for sequencing projects.) (By the way. . . "So far, so good". I haven't noticed any problems, YET, when loading up my Kontakt 2 and Kontakt 2 Player instrumental software programs.)
    2) Will this apparent problem leave my MacBook Pro vulnerable to future problems (like future program updates, computer viruses, etc)?
    3) Is there any way to fix this apparent problem??
Thankfully, I did NOT upgrade the iTunes on the larger MacPro computer which houses main audio and video editing software programs. In fact, I very rarely use the iTunes program. The only reason I keep it on the MacBook Pro is because my wife owns an iPod device. But she keeps her iPod hooked up to her aging yet dependable Dell laptop computer. (I don't think she even updated her Windows version of iTunes yet! LOL!) Silly, silly me for updating a program I don't even use. Now, I humbly wish to fix this problem before it get worse. I use the MacBook Pro all the time for my music-sequencing projects (as a slave computer to my MacPro).
Thank you in advance. . .
Embarrassed. . . . and GRATEFUL for any solutions to this apparent problem. . .
    Ted

    Thank You!!
I read the entire link that you supplied. Very Informative!! It also relieved my anxiety quite a bit!
    Again, thank you!

  • User-exit after updating PO from Order response ?

    Hi All,
We are looking for a user-exit after the Purchase order is updated from an order response.
With this user-exit we would like to trigger a WF to the user to carry out transaction YE22N, with the WF the user(PO creator) can execute and update the PO.
Any feedback, tips would be helpfull and for sure points reward.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Nameeth

    Hi Anand,
Sorry for the confusion., try to explain here.
During the updation of PO from inbound ORDSP IDoc, we have a transaction YE22N to confirm if the changes in ORDSP is accepted or not.
So we would like to automate this so that after the PO is update/saved from ORDSP IDoc, then we can trigger a workflow to send email to the PO creator.
If its still confusing then, "I would like to know if there is a user-exit or if Workflow can be triggered after updating PO" ?
    Regards,
    Nameeth

  • Special Permissions after Update?

So what gives? No more special permissions after update?
    IE: WIdgets, doc, etc.
    -Tim

Disk Utility no longer reports the special permissions when verifying or repairing your permissions in Mac OS X 10.46; the list of special messages may be available by opening the Console in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and looking at the logs.

  • Technical: What user permissions needed to update Dreamweaver (or Studio MX)? (Win XP)

    Hello everybody,
does anyone know, what user permissions are needed under
Windows XP Professional, so that the users can update Dreamweaver
by themselves? Currently every time a new update is released,
someone with an administrator account has to log in and update
Dreamweaver. It would be nice if the users could do that by
    themselves.
System info: Windows XP Prof. clients in a network, user
rights managed via Windows 2003 Server with Active Directory.
I have this problem regarding whole Macromedia Studio MX
(Fireworks, Flash, Freehand and Contribute, too)...
I've already contacted Adobe support, but they only answered
with this one sentence: "Dear xyz, Please address this question to
    Microsoft." (great support, woohoo *sarcasm*)
    Kind regards,
    Chris

Sounds to me like the users need to be made local
    administrators of
their computer. The administrator comes, logs on to the PC,
    and goes to
start, control panel, user accounts. Then click "Add"... they
    type in
your user name (or whoever uses that computer), and then for
    "Domain"
puts the name of the computer. Click Next. Then select
    "Other", and
"Administrators".. .then click Finish. You are now
    administrator of
your computer but not of the Network Domain. You can download
    updates
and make changes to your computer without being able to make
    changes to
    the network.
