User preferences resetting to default...

After a log out or a restart my wife's macbook pro (not the new model) all user visual prefs are lost. Goes back to deafult desktop, dock deafult, etc.not what I have just set.
FYI: User folder is on a 2nd internal hard drive (disk player removed). Checked that ML is using this as teh user folder, it is. Even reselected it, restarted, changed prefs, logged out and back to defaults.... something is not right. Thanks (upgraded from Lion).

Hmmm, no one else. Okay...
I eventually fixed it, those it was semi laborious...
The permission problem(created in upgrading to ML) was in the user library(hit go in the menu by holding the option key to reveal library ). I had to go in by hand, command "i" on folders, opening the info window, unlocked it w/ password and changed the permissions - I had to add the actual user (admin no less)and then select "read and write" access to the folder. It was a bit tedious as plenty of the folders (and inside content) had the red "-" sign revealing the permission problem. Obviously I decided against aborting the account and cleaned it up instead. Less data transfer that way.

  • Date modified timestamps resetting on login (mouse user preferences reset)

    Hi,
Using network accounts on 10.8.2 off a 10.8.2 server.
All files in user directory have 'date modified' timestamps reset to login time.
    This occures for all users.
This I believe is also causing mouse user preferences to be reset on login.
Has anyone come across this problem?
I migrated from 10.7.4 Server to 10.8 Server
    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi
I am just "happy" to see that I'm not the only one having the exact same trouble.
The "date modified" resets to last login time, user preferences (particularly some of the trackpad, keyboard and dock prefs) are thrown away and in part reset to some default values.
My setup is various iMacs with their HomeDirectories on the server, all machines with 10.8.2 (Server) installed.
    Could Apple help?

  • Safari preferences reset to default after closing app

    Macbook pro 15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009
After updating to Yosemite, Safari  preferences revert to default once the app is closed. The "Welcome to Safari" window seems to be the home page, despite changing it repeatedly. I also can't keep the preferences I set to customize the toolbar from the Safari view menu. While these issues aren't a big deal relative to the serious problems others are having, it's quite annoying and frustrating, and not what I expect of an Apple product.
Like others, I often have to restart the computer to get Safari to load pages, otherwise it sticks at the 15% point.

    Hi ..
    Might be corrupted Safari preferences
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari then reset your Safari preferences.
For webpages not loading, try another DNS server >  Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
    For OpenDNS ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Try Safari.

  • Why were my preferences reset to default settings? Why are all my bookmarks were erased, and now it says that Hulu is not working? WTF?

I started firefox this morning just like normal, I didn't change ANYTHING on firefox or on my computer. Now all my bookmarks were randomly erased, and now Hulu is not working. This is the error message from hulu:
"It appears that software on your computer is blocking JavaScript. To enjoy Hulu.com, you'll need to enable JavaScript in your web browser. Please configure your security software or browser plugins to allow Hulu.com to load JavaScript. "
Then when I go to hulu's tech support and follow their direction to enable Java, their directions are incorrect!!!! For the skeptics: http://www.hulu.com/support/article/406387
I tried looking for bookmarks backups and there are none on my computer, so I am now forced to go through and remake all my bookmarks.
This makes absolutely no sense and I don't understand why no one has a decent answer. I better not see a god damn moderator get on here and tell me "this is not typical behavior". What a load of crap! I've seen other questions on here about the same damn thing that are still unresolved.

Okay, take a deep breath. Everyone is responding to your problem of losing your settings. Firefox settings folders are called profiles. If you can switch Firefox from whatever pretty much empty profile folder it is using now back to your previous profile, this should resolve your issue. Hopefully with that context in mind, the earlier replies will make more sense.
Also, Java is a plugin used to play certain applets and JavaScript is a technology built into Firefox. For now, you can ignore Java and focus on JavaScript.
JavaScript is enabled by default. To switch the setting, you can use the about:config preferences editor. Here's how:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''java''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) If '''javascript.enabled''' is user set to false, double-click it to switch it back to the default value of true.

  • Hotkey preferences reset to default everytime I reboot

I just got my first Mac ever (something I've been wanting since High School, but could never afford), and I absolutely positively love it. What was I thinking? Sticking with a PC for all these years?!
Well, I have stumbled onto a little bug/issue.
I use software like Photoshop and Flash on this Mac quite often, so naturally I wish to reserve the "F"-keys for those applications. And as such, in the Mac preferences, under "Keyboard & nfo>MacBook PrMouse" I check the box next to "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software.."
OK, so I've got the F keys disabled now.
There are only three Mac-specific hotkeys I wish to map, particulary the "All Windows", "Desktop" and "Dashboard". So I select the "Keyboard Shortcuts" under the Keyboard & Mouse Preferences, and map out those three functions by using Command+F10, Command+F11 and Command+F12 respectively.
It works fine now, right? Yep, all of my F keys do nothing (as they should, since they are reserved for application-speficif use), and the way I activate "Desktop", or "Dashboard" is by using the aforementioned combination which I've mapped in Keyboard Shortcuts.
Now, this is the problem. If I reboot my Mac, those three mapped out hotkeys are reset to F10, F11, and F12 (instead of being combined with the Command key).
If anyone could give me a tip or a suggestion on how to get those Keyboard Shortcuts to retain their settings after a reboot, I would totally appreciate it. Thanks you guys!

  • How can I reset all defaults app associated to file type?

I recently used the "Info" command to associate all ".eps" files to open with Photoshop. This caused my Illustrator EPS files to also open with Photoshop. How can I revert to the original finder settings so I can have the defaults apps like before?

    Please do the following.<br><br>
    #Click '''Help '''| '''Restart with Add-ons disabled'''.<br><br>
#In the menu which appears, checkmark the option called "'''Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults'''"<br><br>

  • Can I delete the files in ~/Library/Preferences and have all preferences reset to factory default?

I have this folder inside my /Library folder called Preferences. I was wondering if I could delete all of the files inside this folder and have all of my preferences reset to the factory default?

First, why would you want to do this? I ask because all of the applications installed also have preference files. Some of the preference files store things like serial numbers. Some programs that use plugins that use serial numbers also store the serial numbers in the host program's preference file. RapidWeaver is an example of this.
So, If you deleted all of the files in your preference folder, you could have some major headaches for a while afterward.
If you are curious, there is a program called AppleJack that only runs in Single User mode. It can check preference files for you. There are several others available that cost money. AppleJack is a free open source application.
    Hope this helps,
    Craig

  • After restart, all user settings are gone and reset to defaults

Hi after waking up my iMac from sleep today, it appeared something had gone wrong (apps not responding…notification that my external drives had "not been ejected correctly" etc). I restarted. After restart, and logging back in to my regular user account, all user settings were missing and reset to factory defaults: Desktop reset to the "wave", Dock reset, Download folder missing (grey question mark), Dropbox unable to connect, Safari bookmarks missing (but still on my iPhone-- so it's a local iMac problem, not an issue with iCloud), small things like mouse scrolling prefs reset etc.
Basically all of my user preferences are missing. I've seen a number of threads about how to fix some of these items individually, but seems like there is a single corrupt preference file somewhere maybe?
I've repaired permissions a few times (there were a lot), and restarted but nothing has fixed it yet.
I had been logged out of iCloud, but once I logged back in, my Mail came back (just my me.com account-- still missing my Gmail, will need to reset I guess), along with Calendar and Contacts-- those are ok.
I keep all my files on an external LaCie RAID, and that all appears to be fine. Folders all intact etc.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks for your help!

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work.<BR>As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to.<BR><BR>HTH

  • Changing Default user Preferences in Workspace

I am using HFM 9.3.1. Each time I set up a new user I have to get them to log in, and go through the following routine..
Go to File>Preferences. Then Select Financial Reporting on the left side of the preferences window. Under the Preview heading on the screen are two radio buttons for On and Off. Select On and click OK.
Does anyone know how to change the default setting on this Preference to On?

From the workspace administrators manual, the directions are:
Assigning Reporting and Analysis Default Preferences
User Management Console enables users with Provisioning Manager and Explorer roles to set
the default folder, new document folder, and start page application preferences for users and
groups. Individual and group preferences have precedence over default preferences.
For default preferences to succeed, users and groups must have the roles and permissions
necessary to access specified folders and interface elements.
Provisioning Manager is a Shared Services role that enables you to provisions users and groups
to applications. It is also required for setting default user preferences for Reporting and Analysis.
For more information, see the Hyperion Security Guide.
➤ To assign default preferences for Reporting and Analysis:
1 Select Navigate > Administer > User Management.
2 Log on to User Management Console with a user name provisioned with Provisioning Manager and Explorer
    roles.
3 Expand the Projects node until a Reporting and Analysis application is displayed.
4 Right-click the application name and select Assign Preferences.A three-step wizard is displayed in the Process bar.
5 For step 1 of the Wizard, Select Users, select Available Users or Available Groups.
6 From the left panel, select user names or group names and click the right arrow.
To select consecutive names, select the first name, press and hold down Shift, and select the last
name. To select names that are not consecutive, press and hold down Ctrl, and select each item.
Use Add All to select all names.
7 Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select a combination of users and groups.
8 When all user and group names are displayed in Selected Users and Groups, click Next.
9 For step 2 of the Wizard, Manage Preferences, specify these default preferences for the selected users and
    groups:
    Managing Users 41
    ● Default Folder—Repository location of the default folder.
    ● New Document Folder—Default folder in which the new document wizard searches for
valid data sources, that is, Web Analysis database connection files and Interactive Reporting
    documents.
    ● Start Page—Reporting and Analysis interface displayed after logging on. Select None,
    Explore, Document, Favorite, or Scorecard.
If you select Explore or Document for Start Page, you must specify a repository location.
10 When all preferences are specified, click Next.
11 For step 3 of the Wizard, Finish, choose between three tasks:
    ● To configure options for another application, select one from the View pane.
    ● To change preferences for currently selected users and groups, click Back.
    ● To specify another set of users and groups and set their preferences, click Continue.

  • Default user preference of Planning

    Hi,
I would like to ask if I can set the default value of user preference of all users in the same time? For example, I would like to set the default value of Planning Preference of all users as "Use application default".
    Thanks very much.
    Porcia

Another option, which may be considered somewhat safer and has the advantage of not requiring a Planning service restart, is to use Lifecycle Management (LCM) to export user preferences (Configuration > User Preferences) from the application to the file system, modify the XML file as necessary, and then use LCM again to import the modified file back into the application.
I'll add a word of caution that I haven't used this approach myself for this exact scenario, but it should work in theory!

  • Leopard Resets Application Default Preferences

    Hi Everyone,
I think I've just encountered a huge bug with Leopard... Whenever I enable my firewall, it seems leopard resets the default application settings for all my applications. Just to update this... I ONLY experience this issue when the firewall is enabled. If I disabled the firewall, the problem goes away. shrugs
