User profile corrupt-ish after mass deletion of ".plist" files

Here's my problem:
I had two sequential hard locks due to World of Warcraft on my Macbook Pro. After the second reboot, certain applications in the iLife suite (notably iCal and Safari) and certain 3rd party applications (such as Newsfire) would crash a few seconds after opening with an "application crashed unexpectedly" error. Note that these applications seem to respond and work fine for 3-5 seconds after launching, then crash inexplicably.
Being a mac noob and misreading technical help, I proceeded to delete all of the .plist files from my user>library>preferences folder. The only thing this succeeded in doing is reducing my profile back to its "factory" state, loosing all system settings and preferences. Oops.
I have verified/repaired my disk and permissions through Disk Utility and used Cocktail to clear my caches to no avail.
Now, I would just trash this user profile for another but I have no decent way to backup my iLife content and would like to avoid having to trudge down that path if at all possible.
I've browsed these forums for a solution, but so far fruitlessly. I'm working on a dissertation for school and desperately need a stable system to work on, so any help you guys could provide would be immensely valuable. Thanks!

The solution was to rename my Library folder to "Library.old" -- not optimal, but it fixed the problem.

  • User profile - hold data, set data & delete data

    Hello friends,
In menu, system - user profile we have sub selections for Hold data, set data, Delete data.
What is the function of these selection items?
    Thanks

Use Hold data to keep data values that you have entered in fields in an application for the duration of a user session. When you call up the application again, you can overwrite these values.
Once you set data, you can no longer overwrite these values and have to use delete data if you want to enter different values.

  • How to stop user profiles clean-up job from deleting Active users.

    Hi,
Somehow bunch of active users profile are marked for deletions and their managers have received email saying it will be deleted in X days.
I know if we disable My Site Clean Up Job, it will not delete any profiles. But I want that job to continue running and stop active user profiles from getting deleted.
    How do I proceed here...
    Thanks,
    Abhilash

    Hi Abhilash,
I understand SharePoint 2010 MySite clean up timer job is deleting active user profiles.
Firstly, I need to confirm with you that the timer job will work on below two situations:
1.When you use the web UI in Central Administration to delete a user profile
2.When a user who was included in a previous user profile import is no longer included in the import.
The second point bears a little more explanation, please refer to How Is A User Profile Deleted?
    in the article below:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kaevans/archive/2012/06/25/top-recommendations-for-managing-the-my-site-cleanup-timer-job.aspx
Let me know if you situation is not included in the above two.

  • Imac does not start after I deleted login plist

I had a popup message that my imac was not able to connect to my wifes computer. After reading on this forum that others had the same issue and it had been resolved by deleting com.apple.login...plist .... I did the same.
Now my computer is not starting at all. It shows the apple sign, gives the start sound and then white screen with rotating sign. Here it remains. If I could open the computer somehow I could restore that file because I didn't empty trash.
Considering that imac has the wireless keyboard I thing that it doesn't connect to it any more because all the methods to boot it in safe mode didn't make any difference.
    Any suggestions?

I still don't understand why it won't boot, but if it's still in the Trash, as you say, you might try the following.
The following applies only if the loginwindow.plist you trashed was found in the HD Library, not your User LIbrary.,
Boot into single user mode. Hold down Cmd-s at the startup chime. You will get a screen with text only.
At the prompt, which will end in root# enter the following.  (For this, the  fsck -y ,keep entering that and hitting return until you get a message "The volume***** appears to be OK" )
    NOTE:If you get
fsck_hfs: Volume is journaled. No checking performed.
fsck_hfs: Use the -f option to force checking.
Then just go ahead and enter the next command. Don't wait until you get "The volume*******appears to be OK."
    fsck -y
    next enter and hit return
    mount -uw /
    Then, finally, enter
    mv /Users/"yourusername"/.Trash/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist /Library/Preferences/
(IMPORTANT: In the above command, there is a space after /com.apple.loginwindow.plist and before /Library/Preferences/)
Only put yourusername in quotes if it has spaces, otherwise the quotes are not needed.
When the root# prompt returns, enter reboot and hit return. (And pray)
Note: all of this, except for your user name, which will depend on what that is, must be entered precisely as given, noting case and all spaces or lack of. After hitting return for each of the given command wait until you get a new prompt.

  • Mass Delete Offline Reference Files..?

You know when you open a project and it says
"Some of your files have gone offline" ?
How can I mass delete these references?
I have already "forgotten" these, so I don't
get a warning when I open the project.
I just don't want them cluttering up visual space.
I have thought to use Media Manager, but I'm afraid
it'll write over my good files or try and copy everything.
Even if the referencing works out, I'm afraid the red files
will still be there and some of my audio/Motion files
will be cut into unworkable pieces.
Thanks for the help in advance!

If I understand you, you have references in your project that point to files that are no longer resident on your system? A lot of media clips with the redline through them? And you don't want to look at them any more?
If so, just delete them from your browser: highlight, hit delete key.

  • Deleting a .plist file

I have deleted my Carbonite account and there is still an annoying popup that keeps appearing on my desktop.  I logged in as root user and deleted all the carbonite files from system/library. There is still 2 .plist files in library/launchagents. Can I just throw them in the garbage or is there a different way I need to get rid of them? (I'm running 10.8.5)
    Thanks
    Cayleen

Plist files may be dragged to the trash to delete them.

  • How to mass remove memeo plist files

I have folders copied from varoius sources, my mca, laptop and other older external drives all combined on my new external drive.  One set of folders has .memeo plist files cluttering up every folder, thousands of them.  How can I search for these so that I can delete them.  Because going into every folder is going to take forever.

I would download [TrashIt] which is a user-friendly wrapper for some underlying system commands. To delete items that are not in the Trash, you drag their icons directly onto the TrashIt icon. If you instead double-click the TrashIt icon, it will "force-empty" the regular Trash.
I would try it first with just one of your "bad" files to see what happens. If that works, then you can try dragging an entire selection of files or folders onto the TrashIt icon.

  • How to restore my 2 mail acc. after incorrectly moving back .plist file ?

This morning my Mail was quitting 5 sec. every time time I opened it. I moved com.apple.mail.plist file to trash, started Mail. I got a message that one of my mail boxes(don't remember which one..) will be renamed.
I guess I made a mistake by opening Mail and not Mail.app ?
Closed Mail and moved back .plist file into Library/Pref.
Here I made another mistake by dragging incorrectly, it was placed into some other program. I deleted the other program, and moved the .plist into Library/Prefer.
As the result, my both Mail accounts are gone, and instead I have now MobileMe in my Inbox.
How to restore my accounts now please ???
    Thanks!!!

I have both POP accounts in Library/Mail. What should I do to have both POP in the Mail ?
To drag both to desktop and then to Mail? how and exactly where ?
or to create these two POP again in Mail and then drag both POP folders there ?

  • User profile taking 26GB space, can't see any files

A friend of mine gave me her laptop to retrieve her data as the MacOS got corrupt and I think everything broke on the partition map. Once I coaxed the drive to mount after many runs of disk repair I got to the user folder and it had the no biggie, just copy and redo permissions right?
Copied the user folder to my drive:
    ran chmod -Rf 755 26GBEmptyUserFolder/
ran chown tonystark:staff -R 26GBEmptyUserFolder/ (just in case for anything weird)
After that the went away the folder is completely empty to the GUI and CLI
Running rsync on the user folder gives me this cryptic sparse file list instead of files inside the user folder.
    Users/.Hawkeye/Hawkeye.sparsebundle/token
                   122880 100%    6.51MB/s    0:00:00 (xfer#4, to-check=3195/3202)
    Users/.Hawkeye/Hawkeye.sparsebundle/bands/0
              8388608 100%    1.26MB/s    0:00:06 (xfer#5, to-check=3193/3202)
    Users/.Hawkeye/Hawkete.sparsebundle/bands/290
         8388608 100%    1.60MB/s    0:00:05 (xfer#127, to-check=3071/3202)
What is going on? Is the home folder encrypted?

You could have a bad install. There's a thread/threads around here talking about the viewer being all white due to a bad install of the program or a corrupt user. I've also heard it manifest with a black screen instead of white.
Quickest thing to check. Create a new user account. Log in there, and open Motion. If Motion opens fine, then you have a problem with your normal user account.

  • Reset Syst Prefs by deleting related ".plist" file-but no new one created

System Preferences was acting buggy (wouldn't open), so I deleted "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", to reset them. But even though Mac OS X should create a new one to replace it, there is still no system preferences file. How do I fix this?

I did, but it's still not working!
OK, then you need to look in your log files to see if anything strange is happening. The simplest way to look at log files is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "console.log" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here. That information in itself may be sufficient to see what is going on.
If you see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". Click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar. Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • Quizstope has hijacked safari on my macbookair running Lion - I deleted the .plist file, the cache, and it is still there

Safari on my macbookair running Lion has been hijacked by quizstope - followed the advice to clear the cache externally - did not eliminate it - erased the .plist file in the Preferences folder of the Library - again no help in getting rid of quizstope.  Any advice?

    Same issue here >  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3163105?start=0&tstart=0
    Force quitting Safari helped there.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Force Quit.
You can also force quit apps using Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities
And make sure your have:  Block Pop-Up Windows selected from the Safari menu bar. Safari > Block Pop-Up Windows

  • Unable to access time machine backups after creating new user profile

    Hi,
I had visited the Genius Bar with some problems with iTunes not opening. The Genius had indicated that I likely had some corrupt files and that the easiest fix would be to create a new user profile... So we did...
After transferring all my data over to the new profile and setting everything back up as I like I deleted the old (presumably corrupt) user profile. To my dismay I no longer have access to any of my time machine backups that were created prior to setting up my new user profile... They appear to still all be there. However, I am unable to select any of the dates prior to the new user profile's creation and the deletion of the old profile...
    Please help...
    Thank in advance,
    Des

That's correct. What you see in Time Machine's "Star Wars" display depends on what you have the Finder window set to. While looking at the new profile, you can't see any backups that were done before it existed.
You're right, they're still there, for now, but are grayed-out in the timeline at the right, because what's in the Finder window wasn't backed-up then.
If you select your internal HD or Computer Name in the sidebar, you'll be able to see those backups.
But since they're for a different user, you won't be able to view inside that home folder or restore from it -- one user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to a different user's data.
It's doubtful, but you might be able to create a new user with exactly the same name as the one you deleted, log on to it, and see if the old backups appear.

  • Approval work folw while Deleting the user from user profile

    Hi
    I have a requirement like
I configured AD as auto provisioned.
How to configure approval workflow, when administrator deleting the user from user profile (xellerate form).
FYI, Delete task assigned as undo task for the create user task
    Thanks
    Edited by: user11963802 on Dec 15, 2010 2:31 AM

Create one approval workflow and create one Process Determination Rule like
    If
    Request Action == "Revoke"
    Attach this rule with RO.
    Hey sorry
I shared the information for Revoking user from target Application.
Hide Delete User button from JSP
You can create Dummy Resource with Approval workflow for Deleting User. And after getting approval you can use DeleteUser API to delete user from OIM.
