User profile File access

I have approx 6 Intel IMACS OS X 10.4.9 running Adobe CReative Suite CS2.
Users get the following error.
They try and and place a file into illustrator and as a normal user they get the following error " An unknown error caused the operation to fail" yet when I am logged on as an Admin it works fine .
The users directory username/Library/Application Support/Adobe and /Username/Library/Preferences live on a WIN2003 Server and even though they have Read & Write access to the folders the error still occurs . As soon as I remove the server based home directory so their profile is on the MAcintosh HD Illustrator can Place files ok . Is there a special way I should be giving permissions on the WIN2003 server so Illustrator can write to them correctly ??
thanks In Advance
Mark

Hi Mark,
I'm having the same problem with several users in Mac PPC using CS2 and recently migrated user folders on a PC server (from a mac server)
Since the migration we've experienced a couple of problems with Illustrator and placed images. In some cases the previews won't render on previous files and in others Illustrator crashes as soon as the user tries to open the file. Again if logged in as the local admin user there are no issues.
Did you find a solution?

  • Adobe flash updater appears to lock user profile files in Windows 7

    Hello All,
I don't own any Adobe products, but I wanted to put this up so that others who run into this issue can find it, and hopefully Adobe will look into it if it's common.
This evening, I had just restarted my computer (Windows 7 RC), and after an usually long load time, I found myself loading into a profile other than my own.  Windows informed me that it has been unable to access my user profile and so had booted me into a temporary profile.  I noticed that the reason for being unable to access the profile was that it was being accessed (locked) by another program.  I rebooted.
This time when I logged in, I was taken to my own profile, but before it loaded, I received a message from windows stating that it has been unable to open the user profile, and at the same time I saw a prompt from the Adobe Updater asking me if I wanted to upgrade to the next version of Adobe Flash.  After closing the dialogs, my profile contained everything for my desktop, but my windows settings appeared to have all been disabled (meaning Windows Aero was turned off and everything looked...odd--like an older version of windows squeezed into the updated Windows 7 interface).
Taking a guess that the prompt from the Adobe updater may have been responsible for locking the profile while it was awaiting a response (somehow I guess it was running BEFORE windows loaded the user profile), I uninstalled all my adobe products and rebooted.
Issue solved. Presumably, installing the update when you first see the prompt and not waiting for another time after a reboot would also bypass this issue.
So it appears that the Update prompt locks the Windows user profile in Windows 7, which causes a problem because (maybe only on machines that don't auto login?) it appears to run before the profile loads: so it has a user profile file locked waiting for a response from the user, which can't come because the profile hasn't been loaded by Windows (so the user can't see the prompt), but Windows can't load the profile because the file is locked...sort of a soft dead lock (since I was sort of able to get in eventually).
Wanted to get this out, and was also wondering if anyone else has seen this issue.
    Cheers,

  • PowerShell Script to Clean User Profiles File Location

    Hello,
I have been searching around to accomplish what I am trying to do. It is pretty basic so I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I want to write a powershell script to clean out two locations in all the user profiles on a Citrix server.
Here are the steps I'd like to accomplish.
    1. Find all user profiles on the Citrix server
    2. Delete all the files from these two locations; "\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\*.*" and "\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote\*.*"
This will run on a weekly basis via a scheduled task. A nice to have would be to add any profile over 60 days old.
I have a pretty good start, but I am still learning PowerShell, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Thanks, Jeremy

    Hello mbwc,
how about showing us what you got so far and detail where you have trouble?
That way, we can help you understand your problems and find the solution yourself (= good for learning), instead of having one of us simply provide the solution (= bad for learning).

  • How to set ENV variable using user profile in solaris 10 while using ssh

    Hi,
Please help me in setting the environment variable using user profile file while using ssh method of connection (Can I use the same ~/.profile file?)
when i am logging in using the telnet, the environment variable is automattically set, but not when I am using SSH.
    Thanks in advance
    ushas symon

Please list your .profile and a ls -la of your home directory.
also list the result of env after your logged through telnet and ssh.
There should be no difference - it depends mostly on your login shell which startup script it executes. ksh uses .profile, bash: bash_profile then .profile.

  • How to setting the root user profile?

It seems that I can't fine any complet manual to introduce how to setting the root user profile file which locate at /etc/profile? Who can help me find out or figure it out

first /etc/profile is a global profile for the system
its not only specific to root
from here you can configure the system wide paths
Regardless of the shell you are using, when you first log in your system generally runs the system profile file, /etc/profile. This file is generally owned by the system administrator and is readable (but not writable) by all users.
After your system executes the system profile, it runs the user profile. The user profile is one (or more) initialization files that define your working environment. For example, if you're in the CDE environment your system checks this file (or set of files) each time you start a new terminal or window.

  • Add a DFS file share path in User Profile disk in RDS 2012.

I'm trying to add dfs file share path  in User profile disks .I get a error message "Access denied"
Is it possible to add a dfs file share path ?

    Hi,
It seems we cannot use a DFS file share path here.
    I found a similar thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/d8eafa8f-8999-443f-a2d7-8e6dfa3a2908/user-profile-disk-store-on-a-dfs-?forum=winserverTS
In reply it mentioned "the share needs to be provided from a 2012 server directly as it needs to manage the permissions and share permissions directly".
As you tested you get an access denied error when trying to use a DFS share.

I've a windows 2008 r2 file server and  few day ago I've noticed that under directory c:\users some user profiles have been created.
These users don't have rdp access to this server and don't use any ts application.
Is this a problem or a normal behavior?

    Hello,
IIRC this is normal behavior as they do a connect to the server to access the shared folders.

  • Access RemoteApp error: The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in

I have couple of users in MYAPPS group that is a part of Collection.
Only me (domain admin) and other domain member user can access the app from RDWEB.
When an other domain admin and an another domain user try to access the app (from different machines) they get:

    RDS is Server 2012 R2 clients W7, W8.
I found all kind of troubleshooting for Vista and W7 non RDS scenario.
What it could be? A bit confusing... one admin Yes another no. The same for regular domain member

Checked Event. There were errors indicating that default profile files cannot be copied to user_name profile.
    One of them:

\\?\C:\Users\blue\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group3\08 - Power Options.lnk. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
After doing more research I found a suggestion that actually fixed the problem instantly:

I did check KB2919355. It looks like pretty important...
All future security and nonsecurity updates for W8.1 and 2012 R2 require this update to be installed...
So how to deal with this thing?
May be somebody from Microsoft will see this post and can suggest other workaround instead of removing the important patch.

  • Unable to access time machine backups after creating new user profile

    Hi,
I had visited the Genius Bar with some problems with iTunes not opening. The Genius had indicated that I likely had some corrupt files and that the easiest fix would be to create a new user profile... So we did...
After transferring all my data over to the new profile and setting everything back up as I like I deleted the old (presumably corrupt) user profile. To my dismay I no longer have access to any of my time machine backups that were created prior to setting up my new user profile... They appear to still all be there. However, I am unable to select any of the dates prior to the new user profile's creation and the deletion of the old profile...
    Please help...
    Thank in advance,
    Des

That's correct. What you see in Time Machine's "Star Wars" display depends on what you have the Finder window set to. While looking at the new profile, you can't see any backups that were done before it existed.
You're right, they're still there, for now, but are grayed-out in the timeline at the right, because what's in the Finder window wasn't backed-up then.
If you select your internal HD or Computer Name in the sidebar, you'll be able to see those backups.
But since they're for a different user, you won't be able to view inside that home folder or restore from it -- one user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to a different user's data.
It's doubtful, but you might be able to create a new user with exactly the same name as the one you deleted, log on to it, and see if the old backups appear.

  • Can't access old user profile data (folders with - signs)

    Hi,
My iMac (model below) running 10.6.8 would not load from the start-up screen, so I reinstalled the OS from the instalation discs.  After doing so I was able to gain access the desktop, but had been assigned a new user profile.  My previous music, email, photos etc. were stored in a "previous system" folder, and while I can access the overall folder many of the sub-folders have a in the lower corner which keeps me from being able to open/access them.
Is there a way for me to open or move these files?  Or perhaps reinstate this "previous user" to the system?
I am further stuck because I purchased the upgrade from 10.4, to 10.6 electronicially and now can't access the information needed to return to that system.
Any helpw would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Scott

Thanks Again Niel, you are super fast!!!
I went to the system preferences and then user and saw that the only user currently was also marked as "Admin".  So I tried it again with my photos folder and entered the longer name and password I set up and it worked.  What was different was that I changed the Admin name from the "short" name put in the field automatically to the "longer" name along with the password.
Not sure how this going to work with my email or how to get back to my upgraded version of Mac OS, but I guess I can keep playing with it and see.
    Thanks again,
    Scott

Although admin user cannot seem to regain old user profile or set up new user...no passwords used
How do I get back to my old user profile please?
    Mark

As I can see you have posted this under Toshiba Product Recovery category although your action has nothing to do with Toshiba recovery installation and, for me, it is Microsoft related issue.
To be honest I didn't understand what happen exactly but somehow I feel everything is messed up.
My advice: if possible back-up all your important data and make clean recovery image installation.
After doing this you will have factory settings and clean preinstalled OS so you will be able to use your notebook without any problems.

  • I am working in windows 7 and I am trying to enable the copy/paste and I can not find user.j file in the profile and I am not real sure how to create a file, I can create a folder .

I am trying to copy text from a word document and paste it into my web builder and it says that firefox does not support copy/paste from clipboard. Went to your site and it tells me to open the user.j file in my profile. This file does not exist and I am not real sure how to create that file so I can paste the fix from your site into it.

I went to that link and added to firefox add on but it still does not work. I went to the add on option button for this but it told me that my MYSIWG widget was disabled. Does this have something to do with it not working and if so how do you enable it.

How do I move all my files from one User Profile (account) into another?
I needed to create a new account and want all of my files accessible in the new one.

ok, what you're learning right now is 101 unix, which is good. Unix is a good thing
now: the way unix works, and macos (which uses unix underneath) the files and folders work like a hierarchy.
the start of that tree is /
so, if you were to do:
    cd /
    (cd means change directory)
it will bring you at the highest branch of the file system.
    cd /Users
will bring you to where all the users are.
to see whats in /Users you can use your friend ls command
    ls means list files/directories
    so:
    cd /Users
    ls -la
(the -la here means show all (even hidden) and long format (very verbose))  this flag is very optional.
    you will see
    fred
    user2
    for example.
if you want to see the desktop of user2 you would change directory to it then list the files.
    for example:
    cd /Users/user2/Desktop
Note that the files and directory are case sensitive, so, desktop is NOT the same as Desktop, or DESKTOP
    ls -la
you should then be able to see everything in users2 desktop
you could have done as well the same thing in smaller steps, for example:
    cd /
    cd Users
    cd user2
    cd Desktop
this is the equivalent of cd /Users/user2/Desktop
So, for your file, i don't know where it was, but know that if you log in as user2, it will directly put you in
    /Users/user2
which most likely the file you had created from the other user was in /Users/user1
if you copied all the files from /Users/original_user to /Users/secondUser
most likely yes, all your mail, bookmarks etc would be copied over.
    so in your case.
    sudo chown -R seconduser:staff /Users/secondUser
    should work
Remember that if you start a path with the character /  it means start from the root of the file system, at the highest top you can ever get.
    so
    cd /Users/fred
    is not the same as
    cd Users/fred
unless you were in / already
i know it may be confusing at first but it's actually very logical if you play with it.
to simplify, think of it that / means C:\  on windows
you can't go any higher than C:\  (in a way)
if you're unsure which directory you're currently in, you can always type:
    pwd
it will tell you where you are.
    for example:
    cd /
    pwd
    this shows  /
    cd Users
    pwd
    this now shows /Users
    cd /System/Library
    pwd will show /System/Library
    cd /
    cd /Users
    cd fred
    cd Library
    pwd will show /Users/fred/Library
unix can look very scary but it's actually vital and very necessary to do tasks sometimes that would take for ever to do via the windows. This is good learning.
so for the myfile you had created, i can't tell you where it is, at the time you created, if you can do a pwd command you'll know the path,
ls -la  (this shows all the files where you are)
if you see myfile in the list
    do a pwd
whatever is return, the real location of the file would be:
    whatever pwd returned / myfile
    I hope that makes sense.

How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
