User profile in SharePoint workflow

User profiles can be used to fetch the user Manager, department, Title in SharePoint designer workflows.
This is not available in SharePoint 2013 workflow. However i can create 2010 workflow in SP2013 Sites, is there any way to get the user information from SharePoint 2013 workflow or Sharepoint 2013 in general to fetch the user details from Active Directory
to use in Sharepoint Online/O365.

Hi,
In addition to using Workflow Custom Activity to get User Profile properties, you could try using REST API web service. Please refer to Rajkumar's step in the thread below:

    We're trying to set up sync between Sharepoint and AD so photos are displayed in Lync.
    The certificate referenced in 8311 is not the sharepoint root cert, its the UCC cert with our FQDN of the site. sharepoint.domain.com
    Is this causing the problem with the sync and holding up the photos?

    Hi Rashid,
    Before Creating the Service Application, User Profile Service should be started as Central Administration -> Manage Services on server -> Start User Profile Service.
    After the serivce is started, then test again, compare the result.
    Also, you can upgrade User Profile service as the following article:

  • User Profiles option missing from SharePoint Designer 2013 workflows

    I noticed the User Profiles is missing as a Data Source option in the SharePoint Designer 2013 workflow platform (see image); whereas, it exists in the SharePoint 2010 workflow platform. Is there a way to connect this feature in SharePoint 2013 workflows
    by registering it or configuring through Workflow Manager? If not, what is the new approach in SP 2013 to call User Profiles services?

    Hi,
    Based on your description, you want to use user profile in SharePoint 2013 workflow.
    In SharePoint 2013 workflow user profiles is missing, if you have to use the user profile, you can create a SharePoint 2010 workflow, and use Start a List workflow action in 2013 workflow to start the 2010 workflow.
    The article below is about How to start a SharePoint 2010 Workflow within a SharePoint 2013 Workflow Using SharePoint Designer 2013
    http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/anavijai/how-to-start-a-sharepoint-2010-workflow-within-a-sharepoint/
    And in SharePoint 2013 there is an approach to user profile, you can add the action call http web service to get the information of user profile.
    The article below is about how to use call http web service in SharePoint 2013 workflow.

    In the people picker their picture is grayed out but if you click on their name it will direct you to their mysite and the picture is there.
    Can some body help on this.

    Try running:
    stsadm -o sync -deleteolddatabases 0
    Then, run the timer job named similar to "User Profile Service Application - User Profile to SharePoint Full Synchronization". Wait for it to complete, then re-check the profile photo on the SharePoint site.

  • Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation error while updating picture in user Profile

    Hi,
    I am working on updating picture of user profile in sharepoint 2013.
    I am getting error "exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" while creating Thumbnail at the below line.
    "file = (SPFile)mi_CreateThumbnail.Invoke(null, new object[] { original, idealWidth, idealHeight, folder, fileName, null });"
    I have added SPUtility.ValidateFormDigest() before calling this method. but no luck.
    Please help me on this.
    Thanks
    Hareesh

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to update picture in user Profile.
    If we are giving an option to change the Profile picture in our custom component, we need to create 3 different files and update the reference in User Profile property.
    To create Thumbnail, we can use the code as below:
    /// Get sealed function to generate new thumbernails
    public SPFile CreateThumbnail(Bitmap original, int idealWidth, int idealHeight, SPFolder folder, string fileName)
      SPFile file = null;
      Assembly userProfilesAssembly = typeof(UserProfile).Assembly;
    Type userProfilePhotosType = userProfilesAssembly.GetType("Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfilePhotos");
      MethodInfo [] mi_methods = userProfilePhotosType.GetMethods(BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Static);
      MethodInfo mi_CreateThumbnail = mi_methods[0];
      if (mi_CreateThumbnail != null)
        file = (SPFile)mi_CreateThumbnail.Invoke(null, new object[] { original, idealWidth, idealHeight, folder, fileName, null });
      return file;
    Then we can invoke the method as below:
    using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(buffer))
    using (Bitmap bitmap = new Bitmap(stream, true))
    CreateThumbnail(bitmap, largeThumbnailSize, largeThumbnailSize, subfolderForPictures, accountName + "_LThumb.jpg");
    CreateThumbnail(bitmap, mediumThumbnailSize, mediumThumbnailSize, subfolderForPictures, accountName + "_MThumb.jpg");
    CreateThumbnail(bitmap, smallThumbnailSize, smallThumbnailSize, subfolderForPictures, accountName + "_SThumb.jpg");

  • User profile service not updating 'Title' in user information list

    Hi,

    Hi,
    There are two jobs, User Profile to SharePoint Quick Sync and User Profile to SharePoint Full Sync, that synchronize the User Profile database information with the user information list. Sometimes this stops working (properly) and in that case
    you need to run:
    Stsadm.exe –o sync –listolddatabases 0
    Stsadm.exe –o sync –deleteolddatabases 0
    The first command will display all the databases and when they have been sync’d last.
    The second command will delete the records corresponding to those databases (it doesn't delete databases/end user data).
    Anyways, running this will basically tell the timer jobs that they have never sync’d and force them to carry on as if it’s the first time.
    Go to Central Admin and fire off the User Profile to SharePoint Full Synchronization
    job.
    For detailed information, refer to the following article:

  • Order of User Profile update

    Hi
    I'm in the middle of configuring UPS and would appreciate some advise on the order of how the end user interacts with their profile and how updating of user profile and AD should work.
    1. users start life from AD, only a handful of fields get added.
    1a. UPS updates SharePoint profile datatabase.
    2. every user needs an image, users are allowed to edit certain aspects of their profile (manager). Should this be user profile in SharePoint?
    2a. SharePoint exports to AD new information ? (i.e.image)
    3. Ideally, I would want outlook to pick up the images from somewhere.
    Is the above order correct, Im not keen on updating AD as in step 2a. Is this needed?
    Thanks

    Updating AD is needed if you want to push attributes from SharePoint to Active Directory (like a photo). What version of Exchange do you have?

  • User Profile Services - need-full-object

    During a Delta import over the past 5-6 days there has been one discovery error with a "need-full-object" as the error code. Now when looking at the user profile in sharepoint I see the user and all custom fields. However it is flagging daily.
    We do a one way synchronization (AD-> SharePoint)  Is the only way to resolve this to run a Full Synchronization? Or is there a process to "fix" the one error that is popping up?  We get flow errors with "exported-change-not-reimported"
    fairly frequently but they appear to clean up after the next import, this is the first time I have seen an error stick around for any amount of time
    Thank you for any responses!

    See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms696564(v=vs.100).aspx, there should be some additional info about this object in miisclient.exe, but you're probably going to need to run a Full Sync.

  • User Profile Parameter ID KVS not work

    Hi,
    I've got some troubles with parameter id KVS. I set it in my user profile,
    parameter = KVS
    value = B2
    description = Version (CO)
    when I call report GPCQE53LSADXCC16KZ1R96N5156001, there are two fields with this parameter,
    and their value remain "0" instead of "B2".
    I need to put the parameter value on one of this two fields, how can I do?
    Could someone help me?
    thank you in advance,

    You can run Incremental Sync from user profile 3-4 times. This will delete the user profile from SharePoint UPA.
    Now, we need to run UPA clean job timer job available in Job Definition inside central administration.
    This is a by design issue which you have raised. But, to get it done on the same day you need to follow above mentioned steps. This would be done in some hour and cannot be achieved in 4-5 minutes. So, your original request is a by design issue and can be
    done i some hours.

  • How to set which User Profile attribute is used for email messages?

    I am having a problem setting up User Profiles in SharePoint 2013. I have users that are both (1) Active Directory users authenticated using Windows Authentication, and (2) Active Directory users, existing in another distinct OU, authenticated via ADFS (active
    directory federation services).
    My problem is with the ADFS users. I want to have the users unique id be their logon email account ([email protected]), but want to populate their work email attribute with their "actual" or real email account.
    If I have an OU (External Users) and within that OU (XYZ Company Users), AND my domain is contoso.com, then I want to add a user such that they have a unique id in active directory ([email protected], but want their email address to be whatever
    it is (I.e. [email protected]).
    MY PROBLEM: I can setup the User Profile Synchronization service to map the properties perfectly, but when I I try to add/share a user in a SharePoint site, the user's account email ([email protected] is sent the message, not their "Work Email"
    ([email protected]).
    QUESTION: How do I get SharePoint to use the "Work Email" attribute (NOT the account email) of a User Profile when sending email messages?

    Okay, within Active Directory, the user's email IS set to
    [email protected] The "unique value" (Using the account logon name) works just fine. The problem is SharePoint. When I logon with another account and choose to share a site with this particular test user, the Email for sharing the site is sent to
    [email protected] (the account logon name), not
    [email protected] (the user's email address)
    How do I get SharePoint to actually use the email address of an AD user, and not use the account logon name when sending notifications?

  • Unable to import User Profiles even though I can connect to Active Directory. What could be wrong?

    Hi,
    I have set up User Profile to import from Active Directory. So, I have a connection and have selected a number of directories in AD folder which should import a number of user profiles. However, when I click on the "Run Now" to start the sync timer
    job it shows AD syncing and then within a second goes back to idle state. The account I am using is userprofile account which is in Farm Administrators group. There is nothing obvious in the logs. This account has been set up for "Replicate Directory
    Changes" (as far as we know anyway).
    Any ideas how to check or where I might be going wrong?
    Thanks.
    John.

    Hi John,
    According to your description, my understanding is that the user profile of the user profile service account with "Replicate Directory Changes" didn't import from AD to SharePoint.
    I did a test as your description. After I set "Replicate Direstory Changes" as
    it, I wen to User profile service application, then clicked "Start Profile Synchronization"->Start Full Synchronization->OK.
    Then find the timer jobs "User Profile Service Application-User Profile to SharePoint Full Synchronization" and "User Profile Serivce Application-User Profile Change Job".
    Wait for the Idle status. Then I went to Manage user profiles, searched the user profile service account, the change was displayed in this user profile.
    Please do again as the above, compare the result.
    If this issue still exists, please feel free to reply.

  • User Profiles are the wrong style after importing/migrating site collections from other SharePoint versions

    I manage a couple of different version of SharePoint, which we are in the process of migrating to SharePoint 2013. I have a problem which I am not sure how to resolve. We are using MetaLogix to migrate site and site collection data from an older SharePoint
    2007/WSS3.0 server environment into our new SharePoint 2013 environment and we are having a problem with user profiles that get created.
    I have SharePoint 2013 set up for "SharePoint Profile Synchronization" and some of our user's profiles are being created in an older format that shows the user's claims account information, rather than the more fancy profile type that allows us
    to include pictures and click on "follow this person" links.
    If we manually delete the profile, it will be recreated properly however, as we are migrating many sites and collections over, it is near impossible to do this and keep track of each user so that their profiles can be deleted and recreated.
    Is there some way to change this behavior so that SharePoint will only create the newer style of user profile?

    These 'profiles' are you looking at them in the User Profile Service Application itself or are you looking at site collections? There is a huge difference between the two but people often miss it.
    In most cases you'll have some partial information on the Site Collections but when you click through to their actual profile (not just their User Information List entry) you'll see the prettier version. That information is normally internally synchronised
    by a timer job but that may not have run yet and/or the fact that your users haven't actually used the site may be causing it not to update them (it's an efficiency matter).
    Finally: Drop your sales guy at Metalogix an email, they will bounce it to one of their techies and they'll have seen it a million times.

  • User profile synchronization service wont start after SharePoint Service pack SP2

    Hi
    -Using SharePoint 2010 with 1 appserver and 2 frontend webservers on Service Pack2. (ms server 2008r2, SQLServer2008r2).
    -Farmaccount has been set to local admin on all sp servers.
    -Firstly, the User Profile Service Application runs fine and is started. Dont mix it with the User profile synchronization Service.
    Prior to installing SP2 User profile service application and user profile synchronization service were running fine.
    The first thing I did after the installation of SP2 was running the:
    -psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait
    As SharePoint setup user (spadmin).
    This ran fine on the 2 front end web servers.
    However i got one fault on the Appserver:
    I have also tried:
    PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures
    which led to same resulting error.
    So I tried to start the Use profile synchronization service as suggested manually by logging on with the Farmaccount, starting the user profile synchronization service through Central Administration. This led to Stuck on Starting status.
    The windows services Forefront had status starting, then stopped.
    One question:
    Prior to starting the User profile synchronization service through Central Administration. What account and startup status should the 2 Forefront Windows Services have? (Automatic and local system?) or (Automatic and Farmaccount?) or (Disabled and Local
    system?) or (Disabled and farmaccount?). Because i know that SharePoint UPA will provision these services though Central Administration. However what is the default state prior to starting the Synchronization service?
    So i continue...
    Since it was stuck on starting i stopped it with:
    stop-SPServiceInstance -identity <upaSyncguid>
    which gave me:
    Stop-SPServiceInstance : An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administrat
    ion.SPServiceInstanceJobDefinition named "job-service-instance-36bdf2ef-58f2-45
    e5-8f78-ab75f646611a" already exists under the parent Microsoft.SharePoint.Admi
    nistration.SPTimerService named "SPTimerV4". Rename your object or delete the
    and i could fix with:
    #Stop the stopping:
    stsadm -o provisionservice -action stop -servicetype "Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.ProfileSynchronizationService, Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles,
    Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" -servicename FIMSynchronizationService
    I also removed the forefront certificate from personal - certificate store, as this is provisioned when user profile synchronization service is provisioned.
    That set the Central Administration Status on the User profile synchronization Service to disabled. Fine.
    Everytime i tried to start the user profile synchronization service (logged on as farmaccount), left it for 10-15 min and did iisreset and restart sharepoint timer service, and also tried rebooting the appserver. No change.
    A thought, is it important to restart timer service and do iisreset on the two frontend servers after trying to start the user profile synchronization service on the appserver?
    I'm getting to the point were i just want to delete the whole service application and set it up anew...
    any tips will be greatly appreaciated.

    You're very welcome, hope it helped, if not the I suggest you clear the configuration cache as follows.
    The config cache is where config settings are stored locally on the Microsoft SharePoint server, so a SQL call isn’t required.
    To clear the cache:
    Stop the SP Timer service. To do this, follow these steps:
    Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
    Services.
    Right-click SharePoint 2010 Timer, and then click Stop.
    Close the Services console.
    On the computer that is running Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and on which the Central Administration site is hosted, click
    Start, click Run, type explorer, and then press ENTER.
    In Windows Explorer, locate and then double-click the following folder:
    %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\SharePoint\Config\GUID
    Notes
    The %SystemDrive% system variable specifies the letter of the drive on which Windows is installed. By default, Windows is installed on drive C.
    The GUID placeholder specifies the GUID folder. There may be more than one of these.
    The ProgramData folder may be hidden. To view the hidden folder, follow these steps:
    On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
    In the Advanced settings list, click Show hidden files and folders under
    Hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
    You can also simply type this directly in the path if you do not want to show hidden files and folders.
    Back up the Cache.ini file. (Make a copy of it. DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE, Only the XML files in the next step)
    Delete all the XML configuration files in the GUID folder (DO NOTE DELETE THE FOLDER). Do this so that you can verify that the GUID folders content is replaced by new XML configuration files when the cache is rebuilt.
    Note When you empty the configuration cache in the GUID folder, make sure that you
    do NOT delete the GUID folder and the Cache.ini file that is located in the GUID folder.
    Double-click the Cache.ini file.
    On the Edit menu, click Select All.
    On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    Type 1, and then click Save on the
    File menu. (Basically when you are done, the only text in the config.ini file should be the number 1)
    On the File menu, click Exit.
    Start the Timer service. To do this, follow these steps:
    Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
    Services.
    Right-click SharePoint 2010 Timer, and then click Start.
    Close the Services console.
    Note The file system cache is re-created after you perform this procedure. Make sure that you perform this procedure on all servers in the server farm.
    Make sure that the Cache.ini file in the GUID folder now contains its previous value. For example, make sure that the value of the Cache.ini file is not 1.
    Check in the GUID folder to make sure that the xml files are repopulating. This may take a bit of time.
