User server setup configuration questions

Let me start by saying that I am starting my first position as a network administrator. I am in charge of setting up our network users, VPN, and file sharing system; all having no more experience doing this than a 10.6 Server class I took 7 months ago. That said, I am very green at all this but need to be able to quickly find my bearings.
I am trying to set up a Mac Mini system that would allow multiple non-iOS mobile devices (around 15-20) to remotely log in to that system to run desktop applications. Because of my NDA, I cannot go into much detail about the devices connecting to the server, but I know that I can remotely log in with the device, I just cannot figure out how to set up the Mini.
I have tested using Lion's built in per-user screen sharing implementation which has worked well for the few Macs that I have simultaneously logged in with, but I am unsure as to how stable this setup will be, especially for the 15-20 systems I plan to be connecting to this user hub.
Does anyone have any insight as to how this could be most effectively accomplished? I am not above using 3rd party software and my employer has stated that we can go with a more traditional setup if needed (he would just prefer this setup as it "looks cooler").
Thank you.

  • Mail server - smtp configuration questions

    i'm having a bit of trouble getting clear on how mail configuration works, in particular the settings relating to smtp.
    here are some questions i hope someone help with:
    1. am i correct that settings made on the the settings>relay tab apply only to when my server is used as a relay - and therefore would not apply to general incoming smtp connections when another server connects to mine for delivery to locally-hosted domains?
    2. there are three settings on the settings>relay tab. basically they are: "accept relays only from the specified addresses", "refuse all messsages from the specified addressses", and "use these rbl servers". the first two can seemingly each be separately enabled/disabled in addition to being configured with one or more addresses. my question is what happens if neither of the first two is checked (enabled)? does my server accept relay connections from anywhere? or does it accept no connections at all?
    3 on the settings>general tab, there is a checkbox to enable smtp... one would assume that if this is unchecked, that this would disable all incoming mail AND smtp relay, yet it seems i can have this unchecked and i can still configure smtp relay on the settings>relay tab, so that seems odd - am i missing something?
    4) on the same tab, it asks for a domain name and a host name. how are these used? what is the difference between the two? does it matter if my host accepts mail for multiple hosts (via host aliases - configured via settings>advanced>hosting>local host aliases)?
    5) i want my server to accept mail to anywhere from authenticated users (i.e. users on my network who are sending mail to random other places). i want my server to accept inbound mail (to users on my locally-hosted domains) from any server without requiring authentication. my guess is that this is a pretty common or standard config. i am confused by the settings>advanced>security tab, where i can seemingly allow certain types of authentication.
    5a) what are the semantics of the multiple check boxes for the different types of auth? if i select only one, does it mean that my server will require that specific type of auth? if i select more than one, does it mean that my server will select any of the specified types? what if nothing is checked - is that how you tell it to allow unauthenticated users to connect?
    5b) do the above auth settings apply both types of incoming smtp connections i described above? how can i configure it so as require smtp authentication from clients but not from servers connecting from other networks to deliver mail to my domain?
    thanks in advance.

    I went to http://www.google.com and did a search for "smtp server" and the second entry it returned was this:
    "PostCast Server - free outgoing SMTP e-mail server
    ... notifications to your customers, as well as for sending individual messages. You
    can use it instead of the SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider. ...

  • Setup/ Configuration Question

    The network setup I'm using is a wireless G router, Belkin brand, and I have four WRE54G expanders throughout the warehouse. I don't have WEP turned on so I used the auto configuration on all of them. They all made connection and they all work. However, each one of them tends to lose connection from time to time. At least once every couple of weeks I have to reset one of them. When they stop working the red light comes on and I know the link is gone. I'll reset it and everything will be fine for a while. I thought I'd try to get into the web utility to check if any settings are off, however because it has been auto configured I'm not sure what the ip address is. It's not the default. We use a 10.x.x.x range and I've scanned the entire range and none of them show up on an IP. The only thing that does, besides the computers connecting, is the router. I've run the linksys setup utility and had it do a site survey but it keeps coming back saying that the site survey failed. I hate to take them all down from where they are mounted and physically connect them to check things, but I'm not sure it that's the problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. If the question I am asking here has already been addressed, please point me to the related thread.
    (Edited subject to keep page from stretching. Thanks!)

    Still kinda funny that the site survey fails. Are you using a Vista computer? Saw that using a XP computer solved someone's problem.
    If you can't get the setup software to work you really need to find out what IPs were assigned to the REs to access the IE interface or hard wire them (v2 and 3). I know it is alot of work. I guess you have to assess how much of a hassle it is.
    I don't know if the RE shows up on ipconfig/all. I guess it should since it has a unique IP address. Mines the default so I'll check and repost.
    I'm wondering what the effect is of having 4 REs in relatively "close" proximity is? When mine loses connection (infrequently), the light turns red but immediately turns blue cuz it connects to router again (got only 1 RE). Would your's connect to the router or to another RE? If it connects to another RE, I guess you lose half the speed again. Interesting....
    Also, other than the blue lights, do have any other indication that the REs are working, e.g. increased signal?

  • Backup Server Configuration Questions

    I have a super little setup for our small business consisting of 1 primary mac mini server, 1 backup mini server, 2 WD 2TB external firewire drives, and a rackmounted Cisco switch and UPS. AFP, VPN, FTP, expandable storage, time machine backups and managed mobile accounts all packed into a compact, quiet server cabinet that fits under a desk for less than $2000. Unfortunately the success of this little gem has made it more and more critical to our publishing workflow.
    For good measure I picked up another mac mini thinking i could set it up as an OD replica backup server. Unfortunately I didn't think this through before the purchase and now I have a what amounts to $500 brick in my server cabinet. Would appreciate some guidance on how best to deploy this backup server.
    1) For the backup server to be of any real use I assume its going to need access to the data drives. Is there any way to manage this with external drives? Somebody suggested I should just plug my external drives into both servers, however I did some other reading that suggested this could turn my drives into toasters. I then thought of setting up WD NAS drives through my cabinet switch but was told that NAS and AFP don't play well and I would have the same issue - two systems trying to access the filesystems at the same time.
    2) If i can resolve the first issue, I have the backup setup as an OD replica, which theoretically should take over if the primary goes down. Do I also need to setup DHCP on the backup for this to be relevant? Should that range be the same as the primary or do they need to be distinct?
    3) I have the 2TB primary drive firewired to the primary server with the 2TB time machine drive daisy chained. I was recommended to use Syncronize Pro for my backup between the drives but despite the warnings on time machine's applicability in a server setup (timing not configurable, CPU overhead) its been perfect for my needs with zero CPU overhead after the first sync. My only complaint is time machine doesn't work with ARD so you have to browse the time machine directory manually.
    4) Am I missing a larger plot here? Can I setup the external drives or backup server in another way to be more efficient. Should I pickup another set of drives and somehow synchronize the primary and secondary server completely??
    This is my first server config and has been a fun little project except for a nightmare of a time with the VPN but that's another story.
    Any help apprecaited.

    For the backup server to be of any real use I assume its going to need access to the data drives. Is there any way to manage this with external drives? Somebody suggested I should just plug my external drives into both servers, however I did some other reading that suggested this could turn my drives into toasters.
    You're right - You cannot connect one FireWire drive to two systems and hope it will work. That is asking for trouble right there.
    I then thought of setting up WD NAS drives through my cabinet switch but was told that NAS and AFP don't play well and I would have the same issue - two systems trying to access the filesystems at the same time.
    The whole point of NAS is that the NAS controller (in conjunction with the access protocol (e.g. AFP, NFS, etc.) takes care of concurrent access.
    However, all of the above depends on the data you're storing on the external/shared drives. For example, don't expect to store any database-based data such as Open Directory to be shared between machines via the shared drives. Any shared drive setup should be for static files only (e.g. users home directories would be OK, as would backups, web content, etc.).
    I have the backup setup as an OD replica, which theoretically should take over if the primary goes down. Do I also need to setup DHCP on the backup for this to be relevant? Should that range be the same as the primary or do they need to be distinct?
    That depends on what you're trying to protect against.
    If you're planning to keep critical services running in case the primary server fails then you can probably eschew DHCP altogether - existing clients will retain their DHCP address for at least half the lease period. e.g. if your lease is set for 3 days you have 36 hours before those machines will require a functional DHCP server. That's more than enough time for most server issues to get resolved (e.g. a reboot), and even more than it takes to turn on DHCP on the secondary server if you don't think the primary server will be back online in time.
    IMHO that's preferable to running dual DHCP servers. You can do that if you prefer but they MUST have different DHCP ranges (don't try to setup both DHCP servers with the same address pools).
    As for point 3 - Time Machine is fine, IMHO, as long as you realize its limitations and don't expect Time Machine to backup everything, including dynamic data such as database files.
    4) Am I missing a larger plot here? Can I setup the external drives or backup server in another way to be more efficient. Should I pickup another set of drives and somehow synchronize the primary and secondary server completely??
    It depends on what you're preparing for/against.
    If you're looking to protect against hardware failure then you could run everything on the external drives and reconnect the drives to the other machine to boot it as the server if the first one is down. That's not necessarily ideal, but it would be one option.
    The second thing to consider is what services you're running that support their own replication/backup protocols. You've already seen Open Directory replicas, so that's the right way to backup your OD setup. The same applies to DNS and MySQL - both of which have their own replication protocols.
    User-based data is a little harder to replicate between servers which is why a NAS option may be viable here. Of course that doesn't necessarily provide protection against accidental deletion.
    At the end of the day, though, there are many ways to set this up. The right way depends on your needs, the services you're running and what's important to your business (focus on the things your business cannot do without, and have a plan for the other services (e.g. manually start the secondary DHCP server if needed.

    Hello,
    Looking at your issue I am wondering if your media is corrupt.
    What edition of SQL Server you are trying to install? Did you download that media?
    If you downloaded it, perhaps you should try to download it again.
    Are you able to install that SQL Server 2008 on another machine without any problem?
    Hope this helps.

  • User/Group setup ( +one minor issue) 10.5 server

    hi, we're setting up an open directory 10.5 server setup and are having trouble with group accounts and user homes (used to using 10.4).
    we would like to create one large group with all of our users as members of the group. in addition to having user home directories, we would like to specify one "group" folder as an automount point when users login. we are wondering about the order for this.
    so say the group is called "new_group" and we want the folder /Volumes/grouphd/newgroup on server.com to be shared and user homes to be created on /Volumes/user_home/AllUsers on same server...
    do we create the share points (exactly as above) in server admin before we create the group/users? is there simple documentation on this?
    also, we were playing around and created a test group, then deleted it in workgroup manager but when we tried to recreate it, it gives us a warning:
    "...conflicts with name assigned to another group..."
    any advice? we tried downgrading to a standalone server then back to open directory master but to no avail...
    thanks.

    Hi there, with our server we setup and mapped out the share points before moving onto the users and assigning the relevant home folder directories, but you can setup your users then the shares then go back and then change the home folder path.
    As far as the conflict goes, I've seen this happen where a record name is the same for a group but sure this would not be an issue when deleted, only usually when a group is renamed and you create another with the same record name. There's plenty of smarter ppl than me in these forums so hopefully they may be able to expand further. As far as guides go have you looked here? http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/

    I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
    Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
    many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
    How do I connect to my Local DB?
    Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
    instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
    I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
    I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
    May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.
    Some of the things I have tried:
    From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:
    net start "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)" OR
    net start "SQL Server Agent(instancename)"(for instance)
    on my sql configuration, I cannot start anything because there is nothing there to start. I can post more details, if that would help. Also, some more details about the error:

    Any one that can help me, I will be greatful. Thank you so much. p.s. please ask me anything if you have any questions.

    It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
    Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
    If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
    name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
    is the instance name you set during install).
    You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
    recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • 10.5.1 Server Setup - Help Make it all Work!

    Hello Everyone, I currently have a new MacMini running 10.5.1 with our Calendar, Wiki and File Sharing. I have recently just returned from the Mac OS 10.5 Training Session from Chicago Columbia College and was astonished at what their demo servers did versus what mine has never done lol. We are a small tech company and there isn't much yet in the way of documentation or training or even training materials for Leopard Server. So I wanted to share some of what we learned from the training seminar and hopefully someone will know the proper answers to my questions. This is going to be a bit long winded but I think it's important to convey my questions/concerns.
    1. Ok initial setup of our Leopard server requires you to input a host name and then the domain name. Well after the first install of Leopard we found as I have read amongst the posts for the past 2 hours that if you place let's say macmini in the host-name field then place domain.com in the domain field. After the server setup is complete Leopard Server wants you to chat, vpn, and browse to http://macmini.domain.com/groups as well as mail. This is all well and good if you have access to DNS like I do and can easily make changes to the MX & A records but if your a typical SMB user then you won't and this means that once your e-mail is setup and your ready to start using your server anyone you e-mail will come from [email protected] and not [email protected] which is a huge problem. So be cautious here. I was instructed by Apple after scratching their head to leave the host-name blank and only fill in the domain name here if your on let's say a T1 or other medium with a static IP pointed at your machine or router. So this is my first pet peve, there is a sloppy work around to this by telling the server to receive e-mail for domain.com as well but still whenever you send it comes from the original domain.
    2. Application Setup - Single Sign-on - When I attended Leopard training this week in Chicago I was amazed at how whenever a user (demo -lab environment) logged into ichat, ical, wiki or e-mail there was simple single sign-on kerberos auth. What I mean by this is once the server is up and running and your Mac connects to the network for the first time either by manual add thru the directory application or a new Mac that finds the Leopard server automatically at first boot and you auth a user on the server to that Mac then there is just a single signon from that point on, NOT! For us our users log into their machines, (mind u they are already users on the Leopard server and can log in just fine) and they try to go to their e-mail for the first time it always fails. We then have to disable SSL over SMTP and IMAP and manually type in their passwords because the MacMail clients cannot trust the SSL cert or we simply just delete their accounts and recreate them from scratch. Same happens with iChat. By design when you auth your Mac against the server, the server auto configs the security and client apps, i.e. mail, ichat, directory, VPN, ical. But iCal has consistently failed setup across 5 server builds and 10 clients. What will happen is when you go to prefs in ichat you see your account but it can't auth you and doesn't show up in ical for your personal server calendar. If you manually remove your user account and re-add it works great. But next time you go to ichat, once again you have to recreate. And I can recreate this all day long. But at the demo it worked like magic. So that is problem number two, SSL and single sign-on does not really work and app auto-config does not work at all.
    3. Apple Airport Extreme 802.11N. - As a test and per Apple's recommendation for SMB clients we picked up a new Airport. We patched it and setup user/pass info and setup DHCP on the device for so if server fails we have internet. And during server setup it logged into Airport and tried to configure settings. We were on the net and all was good after server setup. However with VPN enabled per user in Standard mode on server we have only been able to gain VPN access for clients if they are actually inside the network. I have spent about 10 hours back and forth with Apple Support trying to get VPN to work outside. The Manual setup of new Airport Port-Mapping is simple but crude. It does not seem to work. And there is a default hosts setting which should translate to an open DMZ but does not. So that is third on my list, running a MacMini with 2gig's of RAM which is within SPEC for Leopard Server and using the Apple Recommended solution of an Airport Extreme N does not work for s&*% and I would be very surprised if anyone here has gotten that to work.
    4. E-Mail Services - As stated prior Leopards auto app setup utility does not work for crap unless by some magic there are other steps besides the ones outlined and printed with the purchase of server. But the main thing about mail is that we are missing the basics. I mean your going to be hard pressed to find ANY e-mail application on the market today, Notes, Exchange, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, iMail or other that does not include basic vacation/out of the office message replies. This is a huge issue for any small business or for that matter any size business that wants to automate things when they are out and I think this is one of my small peeves but certainly worth a listing here.
    5. VPN - We have tried like **** to get the VPN to work thru the Airport as previously noted but we have also connected MacPro with 2 nics, one for net and one for LAN and not been able to connect to the server from outside our network. Here is my largest frustration, we currently run SBS2003 from MSFT and they run flawlessly. I have literally sat with clients in their office during a new setup for SBS and in 3-4 hours we were up and running with minimal system level changes from the guided path. And for Apple to advertise this in the manual and all online materials as being SMB friendly is a complete slap in the face. Now don't confuse my above descriptions of problems we have seen across 5 Leopard builds as being a rant because it's not but seriously I am a network engineer with 10 years in the field working with 20+ product ranges and in our office we only use Mac because of stability and uptime. But OS X 10.5 is not Small Business Friendly at all even with the half hearted attempt at the new System Admin console for SMB users. However that being said I will still push on and try to get all these little bugs worked out and what I would really like to see is some feedback on my issues and I would love to know if anyone else has had similar issues. I really had hoped that 10.5 could help my firm finally push the proper solution (Mac OS X) for our SMB clients but it just isn't there yet.
    Cheers,
    DM

    Thanks for the quick read and response. Do you feel the issue might lie with the fact that it is a Mac Mini? And possibly just not powerful enough to run Leopard Server? I have to say in our trials with MacPro it was like night and day as to how they performed. And if you could elaborate on this "Many VPNs don't play well with NAT so your VPN server should have a direct connection to the public network (preferably firewalled, of course, but not NATted)." Most every SoHo and for that matter uses simple NAT translation for security even our multi thousand dollar Cisco PIX and ASA's are basic NAT devices to start with. How would you put the VPN on public net while keeping the attack surface low for the rest of the services like file, web, mail and print?
    Don't get me wrong I want this to work more than you can imagine. We are so tired of supporting MSFT technologies that cost thousands a year in antivirus, antispyware, antispam and other malware protection for the enterprise. We know that Leopard has great potential but for an integrator, getting this system up and functional is not an easy task. And the worst part of it is every time we have called for support the tech always lets out a sigh when they hear we have run standard setup because they are not allowed to walk us thru the server console to make repairs. And have been told by 3 techs so far that this is a new product and the support avenues are not there for standard since it just supposed to work out of the box. But when it doesn't then ohh well. Which is sorta sad...

  • What are the reasons why Server Assistant won't detect Auto Server Setup ?

    Hi there,
    I've been having issues with Auto Server Setup mechanism (the mechanism that allows an administrator to install a machine without human user interaction). I actually have the answer to my post question but I post it anyway because it might help someone that stumbles on the same issue. Moreover, the answer raises other questions about licencing.
    I had the problem that I had created a NetInstall image that had a "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" file; this worked perfectly on the XServe I was testing it on : when I started the client in NetBoot mode, the client was installing without any human interaction, from the disk formatting to the login window... all this was pefectly good. Then I tried to install another machine by starting it in NetBoot mode : the machine installed the system and then waited for human interaction for the configuration step in Server Assistant, as is there was no "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" file....
    I finally managed to figure out what was wrong (not thanks to Apple, as I couldn't find any clue : no message from "Server Assistant", nothing useful in the logs I found just by luck in /Library/Logs/ServerAssistant.log) : my "/Auto Server Setup/generic.plist" was ignored because of the Mac OS X licence key. When I replaced the key in generic.plist with another key, it started working again. I know that the official documentation says to use site licences when using the generic.plist mechanism but at least an error message somewhere would have helped...
    So, it seems that "Server Assistant" talks to apple servers and refuses to use a licence key that is used somewhere else. These policies are perfectly fine, as long as it works and it is consistent, which I'm not convinced of :
    - first, we had success in the past in duplicating Mac OS X 10.5 system disk images (we have lots of xserves with valid licence keys but we found it easier to duplicate system disk images) on our xserves, and even if all xserves had the same osx server licence key, they worked fine (except that Server Admin doesn't like it). As a result, the licence verification policy is inconsistent as it depends on the way mac osX is installed...
    - second, I'm not sure this licence checking mechanism even works : I beleive that apple registers associations between a machine id and a licence key; then, how does apple guarantees that this association (therefore free the licence key) is removed when you format a system hard drive (there is no other way to uninstall Mac OSX, right ?) ?
    Does anyone knows how licence key registration works and more specifically how licence keys get freed for reuse on another machine ?

    Hi Stephen,
    To login, the internal server should be: https://boot.ciscojabbervideo.com/endpoint/configuration
    The external server and domain fields are blank.
    Your username only needs the prefix of your @jabber.com video address.  For example, if your video address is [email protected] then your username is "stephen."
    Unfortunately, there is only forum support for this free service.

    Jason

  • Tryton: server setup (need help)

    does anyone around here use tryton?  I've installed it and all the modules I'm interested in figuring out, but I am not finding any documentation clearly written well enough to configure /etc/trytond.conf in general.  The wiki page doesn't have any real info on it aside from the absolute bare minimum and I am new to mysql/postgresql/sqlite stuff.  I guess I am pretty much looking for a tryton server setup "for dummies"... but any help is appreciated.  I'm looking to initially set up the server on the same system as the client is running (particularly to get a feel for what I'm dealing with) and at some point separate the 2 and have the server running on a separate system from the client (possibly with multiple clients connecting to that server).  Also curious about encryption...  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tibor,
    i know i asked too many different questions relating to different topics. But i have no clue as to how to set up a server, all i knew was that i want one for my home as we have 5 users and i wanted to share data amongst the users. So i just bought it blindly, thinking that Mac being a super smart computer will do everything on its own my bad, i should have researched first and then bought it.
    However i have already asked for a static IP and i as i mentioned to (Toocool) i understand now y you'll asked me to get one.
    Security i know is imp, but yet again i dont know how to maximze the security of the server, other than asking the users to input passwords, and that not giving access to all the users to all folders and files including guest user
    Thanks a lot anyway and if there is any info u feel i know know about, please do let me know.
    Your help is appreciated!!
    Regards,
    Deep.

  • Remote Update Server setup

    Using the AUSST tool to set up a remote update server on Windows Server 2012R2 which is IIS 8.5.
    Working through this document: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/packager/update-server-setup-tool.html#Preparing a web server to use as the update server
    Have reached the point where it says "Add the httpHandles for the zip, xml, crl, dmg, and sig extension in the web.config file as shown here:"
    I have added the lines specified to the web.config file, here is the complete file:
    configuration>
        <system.web>
            <compilation targetFramework="4.5" />
            <membership>
                <providers>

                </providers>
            </membership>
            <httpModules>
                <add name="WebAdminModule" type="System.Web.Administration.WebAdminModule"/>
            </httpModules>
            <authentication mode="Windows"/>

                <deny users="?"/>
            </authorization>
            <identity impersonate="true"/>
           <trust level="Full"/>
           <pages validateRequest="true"/>
           <globalization uiCulture="auto:en-US" />

            </modules>
            <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false" />
        </system.webServer>
    </configuration>
    But when I try to access the web site I get this: " The configuration section 'httphandlers' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration "
    Clearly I am a newbie in IIS (and indeed on Web Development of any sort).
    Could someone please point out the no-doubt-obvious mistake?
    Thanks.

    I'm on 2012 R2 too.

  • Sharepoint server 2013 configuration issue - failed to create configuration database

    Hi All,
    I have installed the SharePoint server 2013. After installing the SharePoint products, the configuration stops at failure of creating configuration database.
    Some system configuration & info:
    - 1 Domain controller server run Active Directory services on Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 (PC1 with name DC.Brainfiniti.com)
    - 1 Server which is used for installing Sharepoint server 2013 and MS SQL server 2008 R2 SP1 (PC2 with name App.Brainfiniti.com)
    - All of PCs were satisfied the requirement of Sharepoint server 2013
    - Firewall turned off & No antivirus tool was installed.
    - During installing of Sharepoint, choose "Complete" option: Farm mode and use SQL Server instead of SQL Express.
    - During configuration, created a new farm with a domain user account.
    - Use domain account to log on and install, configure in Sharepoint & SQL server (PC2)
    ATTEMPTS:
    1. Tried install and set up all of steps with just 1 account - domain administrator.
    2. Tried with separate domain account:
    - SQL Service account use for:
    + Install SQL server 2008
    + Connect all SQL services
    + Admin for SQL server
    - Setup account use for:
    + Member of local administrator group in PC2
    + Install Sharepoint
    + Run Configuration wizard
    + Was granted permission in SQL database: dbcreator, securityadmin, sysadmin and deselect serveradmin role.
    + Was choose for the database account in configuration database step
    Also tried with SQL service account in this step.
    3. Tried with Standalone mode for Sharepoint installing
    4. Trie with domain name: Brainfiniti.local
    5. Tried with some another solution from topic relate to database configuration in our community but not successful.
    But all attempts are failed at this configuration database step :'(
    Please correct me if I am going wrong by missing something or do I need to start/install some services.
    Screenshot Attached
    Sorry! Cannot add screenshot because my account is still not verified. Will add later.

  • Sane virtual mail server setup?

    I'm giving up. I want a simple mail server setup (imaps, pop3s, smtps) with virtual user support that I can comfortably configure from the web (PostfixAdmin, web-cyradm, courier-web). I want to manage multiple users on multiple domains. It appears that the task I want to accomplish is insanely complex for some reason. I'd like to use as few different software packages as possible.
    I can't find a simple and sane tutorial on the topic and I don't even care what software is going to be used. Of course, I did search and play around with the config for hours but to no avail. The tutorials in the Arch wiki are no good either, they are either outdated or do not allow me to do web configuration.
    Help me out here, please.

    It's always good to have alternatives, but out of curiousity, did you not try the courier-mta wiki? I used that wiki guide recently and it had me running with a system like what you describe without too much fuss. The only stuff I haven't tried/used is web-based administration or mail access; perhaps this was the problem for you?
