User / Shares Question Setup

Ok I'm now officially confused. Ok I'm running a 10.3 OSX server and I have 30 XP machines connecting. I've managed to get the machines and users authenticated on the PDC now I'm having problems setting up the home/profile/shared directories. I have the OS on one drive and want all the user information and shared directories on D drive. The directories are such /user, /staff, /common, /office. I want the client computers only access to their own home directories and /common. I want the staff to have access to everything but each others home directory, only I want access to completely everything.
This would be the structure.
Clients:
/Home Directory - Read/Write
/Common Directory - Read Only
Staff:
/Common Directory - Read/Write
/Staff Directory - Read/Write
/Office Directory - Read/Write
/Home Directory - Read/Write
/Users Directory - User1 - User 30 - Read/Write - No access to other staff members /home directory
Myself - I want complete access to everything and noone can have access to my /home as well.
Is there to way as well that users only see the shares they are assigned?
Not sure how to set this up, I tried it and every XP logon user firstly cannot find path to profile and then they see all the shares. Confused.
Thanks

If you are really running Mac OS X Server 10.3, you should be using Workgroup Manager to set that stuff up. For each account, you assign a "Home" directory location inside a "Users" folder. If you want to, you can move most of the Users Home directories to a Users folder on the second Drive. The Users folder on the second drive should be designated a Share Point and have a Network Mount Record specified as "used for Home Directories".
System owns the Users Share Point, and Everyone can read the Users folder itself... but no further. Inside Users, each user owns their own folder, and all the files and folders inside it. I give Admin Group (of which I am the only member) Read/Write access to all folders in the Users folder, and remind users from time to time that this system belongs to the organization (schools in my case), it should be used only for organization work, and they should have NO Expectation of Privacy.
My account for Server Administration was created as an account local to the Server, so it is stored by default in the Users folder on the Boot drive, which no one but me has access to. My Account for daily use is a regular account with Home Folder on the second drive on the Server.
To make my life easier, I installed two identical "second drives" and RAID mirrored them, to decrease (but not eliminate) the urgency of backups. Without the snazzy feature of XServe RAID, I have to remember to check them manually from time-to-time to be sure they are still in Sync and not "Degraded".
There is a whole set of Server Forums nearby -- one set for the current 10.5 version, one set for 10.4 and previous. There are subforums for various aspects of Server issues. Look on the main Discussions page in the right column near the bottom.

    How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

    If it is actually an exchange calendar, and it's not linked to a specific user, it should be possible to simply add the exchange account to each device in question and have that exchange account only sync the calendar.  Then every user has access to the same calendar and can add/edit entries to the calendar as needed.
    The same would apply if it were a Google calendar added via Exchange.
    If the calendar is not actually on Exchange, but rather added from an outside source, it will depend on that outside source where the calendar originates.

  • Letting two users share one synced iCal Calendar

    Hi all,
    I'm looking for a way to share a single iCal calendar between two users, giving both users the ability to make changes to the calendar. Is this possible with Apple's iCal?
    As an example, say I'd like to create a calendar for a trip itnerary. I'm in New York and my host ("Sara") is in San Francisco. I open my iCal, select the "Itinerary" calendar and enter a few events into it. Then, Sara opens her iCal and it automatically loads the "Itinerary" calendar, showing the events I've entered. Knowing San Francisco better than I do, she decides to alter my "Explore Chinatown" entry by extending the hours. The next time I open my iCal, I see the changes Sara made in the "Itinerary" calendar.
    I'm sure this has probably been asked before, but even though I searched for it I couldn't find information answering this question. If you can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance!

      Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iCal Version 2.0.3

    If I understand .Mac's services correctly, it
    features the ability to let users subscribe to a
    calendar, that is read another person's published
    calendar, but NOT to make changes on that calendar
    and then send these changes back to the publisher,
    transparently. Unless I'm mistaken in this regard,
    .Mac does not provide a means to let two users share
    a single iCal calendar which they can BOTH make
    changes to and BOTH keep synced with the other user's
    calendar.
    yes it does!!!!!!!!
    simply log into the single .mac account from any number of computers and use isync. We do this every day between our office & home computers. The calenders in ical are idendical on both. Any alteration can be synced to .mac and the other computer will pick up the change next time it is synced. If there is a conflict, isync will ask which version (either .mac or the computer being synced) to use.
    I think that you are confusing publishing calenders and syncing them
    However, even if that can be done with .Mac (and if
    it can, I'd love to learn how), I require a solution
    that doesn't utilitze .Mac because in my particular
    situation, the other user with whom I want to share
    calendars does not have a .Mac subscription and will
    not be able to get one.
    The other user does not need a .mac account. The whole point is that they are syncing to the one (ie your) account.
    Therefore, I need a solution
    that does not rely on .Mac.
    Wrong. It would seem that .mac would work.
    The only problem is that all the calenders in ical will sync.

    1.why can't apple user share or take data from Andriod?

    I was able to easily move all my data from my Android phone to my iPhone when I switched. But, that could be, because, instead of complaining, I actually asked questions that made sense, listened to the answers, did some reading and figured it out.

    How do I install ITunes on XP so all users share on libary. Hard Disk space is a concern and I don't want every user to have a separate libary.

    Hi, xmbs.
    If you want all the users to have the exact same Library - same contents, same playlists, same ratings, etc. - you can connect everyone's iTunes to the same .itl file as described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
    If you want them to have access to the same contents but be able to organize their Library as they please, check out this article .

  • Users share becoming directly available to users (possibly after sync)

    Hi,
    10.4.11 server and clients all with PHDs. Generally no problems apart from this.
    A user is working away, saving a document, opening a new one, saving that and so on. Then (possibly after a background sync) apps start trying to save directly to the Users share on the server - afp://Server/Users/aperson/Documents/mywork - for example as opposed to /Users/aperson/Documents/mywork. I wasn't convinced at first when someone reported this but sure enough the Users share was there and available from within the save dialogue box but NOT mounted as a share on that machine. Of course some users are saving directly to the server by accident and then not able to find their work locally, then resaving locally, then getting sync errors etc etc.
    Frustratingly I can't re-create the problem. A manual sync doesn't do it so its difficult to pinpoint what is happening and where.
    Also so far, I've only seen the issue from within Quark.
    Has anyone seen anything similar to this?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    You are correct about login in using the owner of the report.
    In order to share a report you have to be the owner of it.
    If you already see the report then you can save it to the database (make a copy) and by that you'll be the owner and you can share it.
    About the security, if you are login in with a database user then you will see only the objects that you are permitted in the database.
    I suggest you'll open the administrator guide and overview the security mechanism of the discoverer since beside sharing workbooks there is also sharing BA's and the different in using DB accounts vs Application user.
    Hope it helped a little.

  • How to set NTFS and share permissions for Users share for home directories in Server 2012

    I have a new Server 2012 server, and I want to set up a Users share, that will contain subfolders of each user's username and contain their home directory.  But what do I set the share and NTFS permissions as on the root level, lets call the folder
    Users? Is the following older article the correct permissions I need?
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/274443

    Hi RJO22,
    You can choose configure the Folder Redirection, Folder Redirection enables you to redirect the location of specific folders within user profiles to a new location, such as
    a shared network location. Folder redirection is used in the process of administering user profiles and roaming user profiles. You can configure Folder Redirection using the Group Policy Management Console to redirect specific user profile folders, as well
    as edit Folder Redirection policy settings.

  • Can't find /Users/Share/SCInfo file

    I've been receiving consistent error message 5103 while trying to rent iTunes movies. The solution recommended is to find and delete the '/Users/Share/SCInfo' through Finder. I've tried these simple instructions but each time the response from Finder is 'no file found'. I'm using a late model intel iMac with Snow Leopard; so is there an alternative to finding this file which so clearly seems not to exist?
    Thanks

    Follow Niel's instructions:
    Open the Go menu and select Go to Folder...
    In the entry box, type in
             /Users/Shared/
    - do not omit any of the characters in that string
    Click the Go button.
    This will open the folder named Shared which is located in the Users folder at the root level of the hard drive.

  • Change default settings when user share file

    When users click on share file default setting is:
    Can edit and mark send an email invitation.
    Is there possible to change to:
    Can view and NOT mark an email invitation

    Hi,
    According to your description, you want to change default settings to
    can view and uncheck send an email invitation when user share file.
    To by default uncheck send an email invitation.  Go to the file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\AclInv.aspx".
    You can change:
    <wssawc:InputFormCheckBox
    runat="server"
    id="chkSendEmail"
    Checked="True"
    LabelText="<%$Resources:wss,aclver_SendEmailCheckbox%>"
    To
    <wssawc:InputFormCheckBox
    runat="server"
    id="chkSendEmail"
    Checked="False"
    LabelText="<%$Resources:wss,aclver_SendEmailCheckbox%>"
    Here is a similar post, you can use as a reference:

    To by default can view. Go to the file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\AclInv.aspx".
    You can add the following code into the function _spBodyOnLoad():
    document. querySelector('[id$=DdlsimplifiedRoles]').value="role:1073741826";

  • User share folder not passing permissions to subfolders

    I set up sharing properly best as I can tell between two user accounts on my iMac, however, sharing permissions do not pass to the subfolders I put into the user share folder. Do I have to assign permissions to every folder individually? This can't be right??

    OK, I found the the small gear icon at the bottom of the "Get Info" window. Unlock the Get Info window, click the gear icon and select "apply to enclosed items". Permissions work OK now. This little setting was not easy to find.

    I have been successful in reading and changing questions and answers programmatically but have not been able to add new user questions. (I have been able to add them through IDM online interface.)
    Does anyone know how to add new user challenge questions?

    I am curious at what point your doing this? I have a set of challenge questions and answers in an LDAP that I would like to use to populate the fields inside of iDM. This way, I could utilze the iDM screens/logic when a user forgets their password. I would also need to keep these fields updated in iDM as they could change in the LDAP. Any suggestions?
