User State Migration using SMP with config manager 2012 R2

Hi ,
I have SMP at primary site and need to migrate XP and 7 machines using this SMP (using USMT),
what are the steps do i need to define in TS so that usmt can use State migration point for user setting\data backup?
Another challenge i see it with XP since we are deciding to take 2 phase approach, that means we will backup data using 1 TS (3 step TS) and then restore data as part of another TS that will install windows 8.1 also with user state restore.
Any pointers if we need to define anything special in TS (migration store etc.) or since its SMP, TS should able to take care of finding it automatically and backup\restore user state?
We have MDT based TS, just wondering if we need to define anything inside CS.ini file related to SMP?
Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks
Regards,

  • Any Limits to using BranchCache with Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 or R2

    Have a client looking to leverage the Branchcache feature in their office locations, over 1000 with numbers ranging from 2 - 40 in size.  There would be 2 - 4 central Primary distribution points servicing these clients in the 1000+ offices.
    Do I need to look at requesting them to make changes to their design to have more distribution points to allow more branchcache clients to connect, are there any limitations?
    I am aware the content is un managed (self managed no control) so the distributions may go over the links more then once.
    Also aware that this would autoset a branchcache on each subnet even though it is a single location, but has multiple subnets.
    Thanks,

    Have a read about our BranchCache addons after reading our FAQ, for others just wanting some info:
    1. Yes the servers needs to have the same key to ensure that hashes are compatible for all servers (i.e. the same)
    2. Reporting will show how efficient it is:

  • Windows XP to Windows 8.1 update 1 - ADK 8.1 with Confi manager 2012 R2

    Hi ,
    We have windows xp systems that need to be migrated as referesh and replace to Windows 8.1 Update 1.
    It is ADK 8.1 with Config manager 2012 R2. I remember there was a WinPE issue with ADK 8.0 is need to support win XP-win 7\8 migrations for refresh\replace (need to have custom WinPE 3.x that could not be modified inside config manager 2012 R2 console).
    I am hearing that this limitation has been removed with ADK 8.1  + Config manager 2012 R2 and we can migrate Win XP machine directly using default WinPE (no need of creating custom WinPE 3.x) to windows 8.1 update 1. Can anyone share there experience?
    share some pointers to verify this?
    or Is it that WinPE 3.x is still a requirement for migrating XP to Windows 8.1\Update 1?
    We will have refresh and replace migrations using State Migration Point with USMT.
    Any pointers will be appreciated.

  • Mdt integration with Config manager

    Hi Guys,
    could anyone pls. Help me in listing benefits of MDT integration with config manager? Once we have
    integration, can we do these :
    - using Ts created in MD
    - using application created in MDT
    regards,
    - using variables from mdt into config manager

    Note in addition to the answers by Torsten and Jorgen, that MDT when integrated into ConfigMgr functions as an add-on. Thus it is simply supplementing existing functionality, not replacing it.
    So, assuming MDT integration into ConfigMgr:
    Can you create a TS with extended functionality provided by MDT?
    - Yes, absolutely. Although sometimes referred to as an MDT TS at this point, it is not really; it is simply a native ConfigMgr OSD TS with additional functionality provided by MDT.
    Can you directly use or migrate an existing task sequence from stand-alone MDT?
    - No. You can manually migrate it and create an equivalent TS, but there is no way to directly import or automatically migrate a TS from stand-alone MDT.
    Can you use anything created in the MDT workbench?
    - No. As eluded to, these tools create two different task sequences. Only standalone MDT TSes can use things defined in the MDT workbench. ConfigMgr TSes leverage packages and applications created in ConfigMgr. The one exception is the MDT database which
    is traditionally created (and potentially managed) in the MDT workbench -- OSD in ConfigMgr can use this (although that's not really something reflected in the actual TS but rather implemented by the MDT scripts).
    Can a ConfigMgr TS use MDT variables?
    - Yes. Once you create a TS in ConfigMgr using the MDT integration, the bulk of the scripts used by MDT stand-alone are also used in the TS. It's these scripts that provide access to the MDT DB as mentioned above as well as MDT variables which are accessible
    to the ConfigMgr task sequence as task sequence variables.

  • Dynamic computers collection based on User State Migration associations

    At our company, we have a group of computers with the follwoing situation:
    User works on machine with WindowsXP, there is already prepared new machine, with Windows 7 installed, and delivered to user. I have prepared 2 task sequences - "State Capture" and "State Restore", both deployed to separate device collections.
    Now, what I do is create old/new computer association in the User State Migration tab, add old computer to Capture collection, let the TS complete, add new computer to Restore collection, and let the TS complete. After all these steps user can begin to work
    on the new machine with his/her profile and data migrated.
    But I would like to speed things a little bit, and allow my
    colleagues to perform such "migration" by simply adding computers association. To achieve that, I need to create a query, that would assign computers to collections, based on the existing associations in the User State Migration tab. The problem is,
    I fail to find appropriate rule in query wizard. Is it possible at all?
    I need computer to be added to Capture collection upon detection of it being source computer in the USM tab, and removed from collection upon finished TS, with the target computer added to Restore collection at the same moment and removed from the collection
    upon finished restore TS.
    I would greatly appreciate any help or pointing into right direction.

    Hi,
    There is a blog about removing computer from collection after SCCM task sequence. But it is for SCCM 2007. You could have a look on this blog to see if the script can be edited to meet your requirements.

  • Config Manager 2012 R2 Update Failed - Now What?

    Starting Environment:
    Windows Server 2012 VM
    Configuration Manager 2012 CU1
    SQL Server 2012 Enterprise SP1 installed on a separate 2 node cluster
    We have been running this setup for Config Manager 2012 CU1 for about a year now with no issues at all.  In an effort to deploy Windows 8.1 I ran the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Update.  The update failed halfway through.  From the ConfigMgrSetup.log
    it looks like it wasn't able to connect to the database and this is why the update failed. Problem is after the install failed I am no longer able to connect to the database when opening the CM console.  I get the "Configuration Manager cannot connect

  • Streamlined Client Management and VDI with Configuration Manager 2012

    Hi,
    There is an interesting blog about managing ConfigMgr 2012 Clients in a VDI environment.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2011/11/15/streamlined-client-management-and-vdi-with-configuration-manager-2012.aspx
    But I didn't find any way or description in the blog on how to prepare the client in the base image used for VDI. Do we still have to make the client unique before shutting down the base image? Or will this be done automatically?
    Are these new attributes (IsVirtual, IsMachineChangesPersistent ...) enabled by default?
    Thanks!
    Gr. Cédric.

    No this is handled by ConfigMgr post SP1
    Are these new attributes (IsVirtual, IsMachineChangesPersistent ...) enabled by default?
    For XenDesktop  -no you will need to enable them in the client settings (not sure for other virtual
    solutions)
    In the SCCM Console go to the Administration workspace; click Client Settings. Right click the Default Client Settings and choose Properties
    Choose Hardware Inventory and click Set Classes.
    Click the Add button and then click Connect.
    Enter the computer name of a master image device that has the SCCM client installed.
    Enter root\ccmvdi as the WMI namespace and click Connect.
    Select CCM_DesktopMachine. Click Ok.

  • Config Manager 2012 not working on Windows 7

    I am having a problem pusing out the config Manager 2012 r2 console with The App-V Management infrastructure.
    I have built the package based on the basic guidence in this article. blogs.technet.com/b/appv/archive/2013/01/08/ how-to-sequence-the-microsoft-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-admin-console-with-microsoft-app-v.aspx
    My problem is that this package works great on windows 8 and 2008r2 rds. It just won't launch on windows 7. It looks like it is trying to but the screen never appears. it does show it as being running in the task manager but it never shows on the screen.
    Has anyone seen this issue and if so what can i do to resolve. I am not seeing any errors in the event logs either. I tried running a procmon and saw nothing standing out as the culprit. all the prereqs are installed.

    Any chance you have installed KB2984972?

  • MDT 2012 - Failure 9701: Unable to find any version of USMT, unable to perform user state migration. Failed to run the action Restore User State. DNS Record does not exist. (Error: 000025E5; Source: Windows)

    I am having trouble trying to capture a new Windows 8 image with WDT 2012.
    My Setup -
    Server 2012
    WDS
    MDT 2012
    Windows 8 ADK
    Hyper-V
    I have created a new task and I can get the image to successfully deploy the image to a VM but it seems to fail at the Restore User State task.
    Once the install Applications task has finished I added a Suspend task so I could customize the image a little. Upon resuming the task sequence is where the above failure message appears. I can see it gets to the next step (which is 'Restore User State')
    but that seems to be where is crashes.
    Does anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong or what I can do to resolve the above issue?

    WAIK being installed was probably your issue so I wouldn't bother disabling the restore task. It is used to migrate user data, docs, and settings on refreshes, not new builds. It doesn't affect CopyProfile, just note that data will be migrated on refreshes so
    some aspects may change, ie wallpaper, shortcuts, etc but what gets migrated with USMT can also be configured.

  • User State Migration Relocation Pattern

    I am using USMT 4.0 to capture data from a Windows XP SP3 system with an additional D: (DATA) drive. I can accomplish this using the generatedrivepatterns option or specifying a file pattern of "D:\* [*]". In my local, uncompressed store I can
    see that I have this structure;
    C:\StateStore\USMT\File\C$\
      \Demo Data
      \Documents and Settings\
      \Documents and Settings\UserA
    C:\StateS\tore\USMT\File\D$
      \Demo Data
      \More Demo Data
    I am then using USMT 6.3 (8.1 ADK) to restore this data to a single partition layout Windows 8 System, however I am absolutely unable, despite several hours of experimenting with mig files, to get the content captured from D:\ into a subfolder on C:\.
    I would like to achieve this;
    C:\RestoredData\C$\
    C:\RestoredData\D$\
    I can successfully relocate the data from C: where I need it to be, however the data from D: just ends up on the root of the C: drive.  I am even simplifying the task by using USMT with just a single custom MigData.xml which only concerns
    itself with the capture and relocation of data from D:, as below;
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <migration urlid="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/migdata">
    <component type="Documents" context="System">
    <displayName>More Data</displayName>
    <role role="Data">
    <rules context="System">
    <include>
    <objectSet>
    <pattern type="File">D:\* [*]</pattern>
    </objectSet>
    </include>
    <locationModify script="MigXmlHelper.RelativeMove('D:\','C:\RestoredData')">
    <objectSet>
    <pattern type="File">D:\* [*]</pattern>
    </objectSet>
    </locationModify>
    </rules>
    </role>
    </component>
    </migration>
    This should be so simple, however this just does not seem to work and in the loadstate.log I see an entry;
    Relocation pattern skipped because enumeration root is not present: D:\* [*]
    Well, yes, of course D: doesn't exist and THAT is why I want USMT to relocate the data!
    Am I expecting too much or attempting the impossible??
    My Personal Blog: http://madluka.wordpress.com

    Hi,
    How about creating D: with a little space, then relocate the data to C:? I guess it need D: exists before relocate the data.

  • Using GTMTool.exe with Operations Manager 2012 R2

    I'm using Operations Manager 2012 R2, and I've successfully used the GTMTool released a few years ago to insert a custom dashboard into a sealed MP folder, but I'm not having any luck creating a Task Pane Dashboard.  I am answering 'Y' at the prompt
    to create the Task Pane Dashboard, but the tool moves on as though I answered 'N' and prompts me for the folder view location for my custom dashboard.  As the documentation states, I've been careful to select the SAME object for all of the dashboard widgets.
    Has anyone successfully used the GTMTool to create a Task Pane Dashboard in 2012 R2?  Or, perhaps the tool isn't compatible with R2 anymore?
    Thanks for your help!

  • PCs not showing in Collection/Queries Config Manager 2012 R2 - Direct Rule

    Hello,
    I have been creating some collections and queries using a direct rule or manual entry of the device and the PC is not showing in the collection.
    Example:  Created collection for a .NET 4.5.2 install that I rolled out.  Manually added the devices that need the application and of the 40 PCs 2 or 3 will not appear in the collection, thus they are not getting the software push.  The PCs
    that are not showing up are pinging able and I can RDP into them just fine.  Config Manager shows they have the Client, are active and getting policy requests.
    I thought maybe it there was an issue with the collection I was creating but I tried adding the same PCs to other collections and they do not appear in those collections either.
    I did a manual query as well with the same results, the same PCs I try to add to the collections are not showing in my query even though they are hard coded in.
    Thanks
    Rich

    I deleted the collection for our "Insurance Department" which the suspect PCs were in.  I no longer needed the Insurance collection so I deleted that just to see if that was limiting the .NET collection.  Now those PCs are showing in
    the ".NET 4.5.2" collection.
    That is good and everything but going forward I will need to have a collection for the "Insurance Department" that will be based on a query that looks for our Insurance Application in Installed Applications64.  How can I prevent this new collection
    from limiting any PC in that collection from being put into other Software Install collections?
    Thanks for the help thus far.
