User Template can't be opened

I found a User Template folder in my hd with a red circle with a dash in it. It's the only folder that has this. When I click on it, it
says it can't be opened because I don't have permission to see its contents. What's so secret that I can't see what's on my
own computer? I asked a friend with the same operating system to check their hd library folder. They don't have this file.
I just tried to download Macports--does it have to do with that? Or is it some sort of malware? thanks.

How would a newly-created user account jibe with what's in this folder (as I describe) and put screenshots. Why wouldn't I be able to see what's in a newly-created user account? And why, suddenly, does this file open, when it didn't before I drug it to the trash?

User Template

Hello. Today, while I was searching for ways to fix another problem, I noticed that i have a file in my library called "usertemplate" When I tried to click on this it had a red sign with a negative mark in the middle. A message popped up saying:
The folder “User Template” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
Being that I am the sole owner of the computer, why wouldn't I have access? I am having a problem with a file downloaded partially and I was wondering if it could have altered the template so I can't access it?
Any ideas what the template is and how I fix this?

I deleted User Template folder in the System Library and i emptied the trash Certainly it was a wrong decision after what i read here. Does this affect my iMac? Should i recover the folder and how?

I transferred files from a NAS server to the Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and now some of the files have Custom Access and can't be opened by some users. How do I fix this?

We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac. These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's. When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access. The files that work properly don't have that configuration. I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it. We're all using PC's and they get the Error: Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar. I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions. I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files. hi, looking for a little help. i was just perusing stuff on my macbook pro and came across this in finder:
macintosh>system library>user template. it's a folder with a little red circle and minus sign in the corner and the dates it was created, modified and last used were before we bought the computer. clicking on 'more info' tells me i don't have access to it. does anyone know what it is and if it can be trashed without adversely affecting my laptop? the size says 'calculating size' but it never gets off of that. thanks.

try googling it. Else you can always ask applecare. They will guide you with
same.

Goto Metadata Repository, check local activated Web Template Name, 1st web template listed is called 0ADHOC_CHART_LIB, but why Web Application Designer can't open it?

0ADHOC_CHART_LIB is a Library Item therefore it is no real template and can´t be opened directly in WAD.
a Library Item is e.g. a chart item with some additional standard paramater which can be reused by library in another template.
Goto WAD create a new template there you can browse through library item. unfortunately i have no system here so i cannot say where the library function is in detail.

Pages '09 .template files cannot be opened in pages 5

I have an older iMac and just bought a new Macbook. I have been having problems (seems like I'm not the only one) with the new Pages. Mostly, even on my iMac, I've had problems opening files. I always get an error that says, "'X file' can't be opened". Somehow I got to some of my older files, I think by converting them to .docx files. Now, I've purchased some resume templates that came in different formats. I can open the .docx files but the formatting gets screwed up. They came with pages .template files (that I assume were created in Pages '09) that I cannot open.
Do I have any options besides trying to redo all of the formatting (defeating the purpose of buying templates) in Pages 5 which is a ****** application with ****** formatting tools?
Can I get Pages '09 back
Can Apple please stop trying to oversimplify things to the point of making them useless?
Apple has really dropped the ball with this one. My frustration with pages alone is almost enough to make me wish I had purchased a different laptop. Microsoft Word '98 was a better word processor.

P.S. the text editor in this forum is better than Pages 5

We largely agree and have been recommending users stick with Pages '09 until a third party replaces Pages with something like Serif's Affinity Publisher next year.
If you migrated your Mac over from the old one it should have transferred Pages '09.
Can you reinstall from original installers? Just make sure to update iWork '09 to v4.3.

Server 2003: make user template with read-only access for shared folders

I have need to make a type of user (like Administrator, Power User, Mobile User, User, etc.) that has read-only acess to shared folders. So when I make a new user and assign the "read-only user" template I wish to have, the user can open files
in the shared folders on the server, but not edit, save or delete files. Other users can and should remain able to edit, save & delete.
Before I dig in, is this even possible?

You could create a Group called ReadOnly, and set that to have Read on the ACLs of the relevant files or folders.
Make that template user a member of that group.
As long as they are not also a member of another group that gives them higher permissions, this would work.
Otherwise set the ReadOnly group to deny Write, which would over ride any other permission set.
So,
Folder A
ACL:
ReadOnly : R
Users: Read/Write
If a user is a member of Users & ReadOnly, they would get read/write to Folder A. As permissions are cumulative.
If you did the following:
Folder A
ACL:
ReadOnly : R
ReadOnly: Deny Write
Users: Read/Write
The users in ReadOnly would be denied write, as it overrides the cumulative permissions.

The document "Blank.template" could not be opened. in Pages

I can not open any tempaltes in Pages from iWork on Macbook Pro.
When I open pages. I can then pick a template. when I click that or any of the templates I get
The document “Blank.template” could not be opened.
I am new to the Mac world and trying to set up for my son to do homework. So please bear with me if I ask a lot of questions.
I reloaded the software and still get the same reply. Any help to get it running would be a HUGE help.

See if you can run Pages successfully in another User account. If so, you have a corrupt PLIST file in the main user acount.
I have a hunch that this is your problem since reloading the software didn't solve the problem. But, I have to ask if you may have moved Pages.app from where the installer put it.

I was cleaning out some files that were no longer needed on my computer and I noticed a folder named "User Template" in the System Library. This folder had a small, red "minus" sign in its lower right corner. I tried to open the folder and it said that I did not have permission to view its contents.
I am the administrator on my computer, and the only user.
Can anyone tell me what this folder contains, and is it normal to be denied access to it?

Why can't i make user templates in Lion like i could with snow leopard and leopard etc.
I follow the same guide as Snow Leopard but, it won't work?

What up fellow MacHeads. Try this:
Found it on MacWorld
1: Still valid for 10.7 Lion.
2: Remeber to NOT copy(or remove) the Login.keychain on the account you use to set it up.
Otherwise the login will complain that it could not unlock the keychain, and promt for your setup-password.. ;-)
The first login will auto-create the login.keychain anyway, so simply delete it in the Template.
3: Don't leave Finder windows open. They will point to your setup account, and not have access.. ;-)
4: On Lion, clear out ~/Library/Saved Application State
Otherwise the apps you had open under the setup user will open in states not so good (like web sessions etc..)
5: Remember to copy the files into the language of the Login Window language!!!
Pr. default, that is English, but if you selected something else during the OS install, like Danish, you need to copy the files into "User Template/da.lproj" and not "User Template/English.lproj" !!

My templates can not find their page in Dreamweaver

How do I reroute a template so that it can find the pages that were derived from it..
I have a site that has gotten screwed up somehow and I have to redefine the paths from the templates from to their child pages... the message that
I get when I make a change to a template and it can't find its child page is the following:

Before you do any of this, make a backup copy of your site files (not the definition, the folder and files themselves) and preserve them in case anything goes wrong in the process.
First, make sure your site is properly defined and all contained within a site folder.
Then make sure the Templates are all in the Templates folder.
Make sure each page is where you want it to be in your site file structure.
Go into each Template and correct any paths that need tweaking. If your site has been seriously discombobulated (technical term!), you will want to check and fix every link by the Browse for File method or the Point to Link. DO NOT try to type the paths into the Template yourself manually.
Open each page in succession, and re-apply the Template that it should be linked to. You do that in Modify > Templates > Apply Template to Page.
You may have to "assign" copy to editable regions at this step.
When you finish with each Template, test it by making a minor change to the Template and propagating the change to the child pages. Check the child pages to make sure they are updating when the Template is changed.
If everything looks good, it is good. Shake your own hand and pat yourself on the back for retrieving a difficult situation.
If this does not work, post back and we will think about it some more. But it sounds like a reasonable course of action to me.

Changing Safari preference for user template

Hello All,
This is my first time on the Apple Forums so thank you in advance for looking at my post. Now to the main point of why I'm here. I'm currently trying to set the Safari Preference from "Top Sites" to "HomePage" on a bunch of iMacs running 10.8.5. with Safari 6.2. I have set the homepage to the needed URL executing a JAMF command since we use their software to manage all of our Macs. Although that command is great and worked well, Safari is set to open to "Top Sites" by default. I know I can do this by executing this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari NewWindowBehavior -int 0
Now this changes the value in my User/Library/Preferences/ folder yet I need this to be applied for ANY user and any EXISTING user on the computer.
The JAMF command made it easy by adding a -feu -fut options so I can change it for existing users as well as the user template. How could I change this for the user template? Any help is appreciated.

Ok, more info... almost everything is working fine, uMask aside. What isn't working is the sidebar in the Finder windows. The shortcuts in the sidebar are making absolute references instead of referencing the local user. E.g. "Documents" in "NewUser"'s account ispointing back to /Users/OriginalUser/Documents
This is probably a setting in the local user's Finder preferences, but wow... that's a pain to deal with.
Any thoughts?
