Users accessing admin home folder

I have two drives in my MBP. A solid state boot drive and the internal drive for all other files including the home folders. There are three users and all of their home folders reside on the internal drive, not the boot drive. My problem is that the non-admin users somehow have access to the admin home folder and all its files, while the admin cannot access the others users' home folders. In other words, the permissions are all wrong. However, I have checked the permissions and my (the admin) home folder has the same permissions as the users' home folder. Hopefully that makes sense.
I have searched for a fix and repairing the home folder permissions through the recovery partition reset password utility seemed like it could be the solution but when I tried that, it did not allow me to access the true home folders on the non-boot drive, it only allowed me to repair the permissions on the boot drive home folders, which is not where the true home folders are located.
I'm on OSX 10.9.2.
Thanks for any and all your help. Hopefully my issue is clear and someone out there knows a fix!

You are correct, it is not supported though a program or user can do it with root access. That is very strange, I would take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or get somebody who can actually look at it.

  • How do I restore the user to the home folder permissions?

I just got an iMac from a friend and had changed the username and password for the administrator user.  Then I was going to change the home folder name.  I was looking at the info on the home folder (which at this point is still tied to the old user).  I inadvertantly removed the user from the permissions before adding the new username or even allowing all users to access the home folder.  Now I cannot access the home folder at all.  How do I restore the permissions to the home folder or add the user back to the allowed users with access to the home folder?

    dalefromdallas,
First you should do a clean install of the computer, while your friend may have included apps, they do not belong to you unless your friend gave y ou the install media and license codes. Considering the machine is also running 10.9.2. this machine will be forever tied to his AppleID which exposes him financially. You should get the 10.6.X DVD from your friend (I'm assuming he upgrade from 10.6.x at some point) and do an erase and install, then update it to 10.6.8 then upgrade yourself to 10.9.2 Mavericks. Then you will have a clean system, otherwise you will be working with a pretty kludged system that will probably be trouble.

  • How can a Windows user remotely access their Home folder on a MacOSX Server

I have a staff member who would like to remotely access (ourside of our LAN) their Home folder on our Mac OSX server. Anyone know and willing to share the process?
    Thanks

    Hi Brad!
Generally, a VPN solution is best to allow someone access to your company network. VPN provides security and access to some or all of your company's network resources.
If AFP is allowed to pass through the VPN tunnel, then your user would connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "afp://servername".
Or if your user's home folder is also shared as a Windows share, your user could connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "smb://servername".
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Multiple simutaneously logged in users accessing AFP home directories?

    Hi,
Many of our problems are described in this guy's blog:
    http://alblue.blogspot.com/2006/08/rantmac-migrating-from-afp-to-nfs.html
The basic capability we want is to have multiple simultaneously logged in users to have access to their AFP mounted home directory, which is configured in a sane, out-of-the box setup using WGM and Server Admin.
Multiple user access could take the form of FUS (fast user switching), or simply allowing a user to SSH into a machine that another user is already logged into and expect to be able to manipulate the contents of her home directory.
From my extensive searches, I have no reason to believe this is currently possible with 10.4 Server and AFP.
(here's the official word from apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25581)
I've read that using NFS home directories will work, though.
I want to believe that Apple has a solution for this by now (it's been almost a year since we first had difficulty), or at least a sanctioned workaround. If Apple doesn't have one, maybe someone else has come up with something clever. I find it hard to believe that more people haven't wanted this capability! (not being able to easily search the discussion boards doesn't help, though...)
    Thanks for your help!

  • Target Mode, can't access my home folder

I bought a new Mac Pro and am in the process of transferring apps and data from my old iMac G5...got all my applications transferred over ok via the Target mode but then....
Ran into a problem when I tried to transfer my iPhoto Library over to new Mac Pro...
When I put the iMac into target mode and then open the disk image (now on my Mac Pro), I am unable to access much of my home folder. As I said above, my applications folder is accessible, but the other folders have a RED minus sign on them.
How do I fix this? Thanks-

You went about things a bit backwards. You should have use the Migration Assistant. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713 for details. If you just got the new machine, I'd boot it with the restore disk, erase the new machine, restore the software, hook up the iMac, and use the Migration Assistant to do the transfer.

  • How can a Win2K/XP user access my Shared folder as Guest?

Well, it's all in the question, guys. I don't want them to be able to log into my machine. All they need to do is send me some files or take some of mine from \Users\Shared. Surely it shouldn't be too difficult, right?
We're in an office wired LAN and I'm the only Mac among many incarnations of Windoze. Right now they all have to log in as 'Administrator' (just the accoune name, not the kind of account, of course...) but it means that I have to fiddle with the permissions of the shared dir in that user account so I can access it from my regular account ('Alex') and I would prefer something more straight forward. Such as a Guest User log-in option.
    Many thanks.

Try Sharepoints. I'm not certain about this, but I think the only way to get access to a Mac over the network is to have an account on the Mac. So, you could set up "guest" as an account and let them log in as that, but it wouldn't give them access to the Shared folder. Sharepoints will let you "share" it out.

  • Keep loosing access to my home folder

    Hi,
Could you please help to diagnose my MBP? I've been struggling to do it for a couple of weeks now
The MacBook malfunction in two different ways:
    A. Keep loosing access to my home folder (usually when I'm browsing in Safari):
    1. The system stops to being responsive for 15-30 seconds, and then
    2. In Finder -> Places my home folder (wk) alias is missing, and I get the error "The alias "wk" can't be opened because the original item can't be found"
    3. In /Users the permissions to the folder are being changed (I haven't noted what exactly are the permissions), and I get the error "The folder "wk" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see it's contents"
    4. kernel.log shows I/O errors for disk0s2
    5. Disk utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state, but the regular problems with /System/Library/java/* permissions won't be fixed
    6. System reboot fixes the issue
    B. Kernel panic (the very first I've seen happened four weeks ago, and then three followed during the previous week)
    1. I got the usual grey screen, and reboot
    2. kernel.log shows Page Fault, in all cases with kernel as the "app in focus"
I've taken the following steps to diagnose the problems:
    1. Disk Utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state,
    2. There're always a problem with permissions in /System/Library/java/... (always fixable)
    3. Run extended AHT in a loop (no problems found) - didn't help
    4. Reinstalled the OS - didn't help with problem A, although problem B hasn't happened ever since (a coincidence?)
    5. Put back original RAM dice  - didn't help with problem A
    6. Zeroed the HDD and installed from a scratch - didn't help with problem A
    7. Exchanged HDD to a brand new one (was planning to do that either way) and restored the OS from point 6. - didn't help with problem A

  • Time Machine Can't Access Home folder

I am using OS X 10.8.3 and my home folder seems to have been deleted without saving (malicious activity by family memeber with somehow gained access to his mother's account that has admin privledges).  I've tried restore via Time Machine (TM) which has worked in the past for minor file recovery issues but, I cannot access the "home" folder on the backup (external) drive any longer; I can "see" the home folder, but it is lightly shaded.  I also am having trouble rebuilding my iTunes library - I can see most, but not all of my tunes - other cannot be found on either the iMac-HD or the TM Backup.  Finally, not all of the iTunes purchased material is accessible via the iCloud download (tunes and app downloads).  So I am pretty much dead in the water.  I hate bringing up  stupid questions but I am not a tech sorrt of guy - I can use a hammer without having to know the physics of inelastic collisions, so my apologies.  Any suggestions?

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and select Restore From Time Machine Backup from the OS X Utilities screen. Select the snapshot you want to restore from. All data on the volume will be erased and replaced with data from the snapshot.

  • Creating a user without home folder ?

    Hi
Can i create a new "User " programatically(iam using to do this) without having a home folder for that user ? Let me explain what iam doing basically.MY application tracks complex deals, financial transactions between corporate firms.Any valid user(called as Member) to this system can create what is known as a "DEAL" for which associated documents have to be managed among other things. For this i start off by creating a new user in the IFS with user name as the deal itself(DealCode which is the DEAL's code is the User name ).(this account will have a home folder and will be /home/<DealCode>).This account will hold all documents pertaining to that DEAL .Now can i create users(rather Members) who can access this account for Deal ?I do not want the Members to have a home folder but when they login their home folder should automatically be the Deal's home folder for which they are authorised. So what is the best way of doing this ?and is this the right approach ?
    thanks
    Sampige

I'm trying to understand your model.
I think I understand this much.
Each Deal is has it's own folder.
    Members create Deals.
A Deal will be accessed by Many Members.
What I'm not sure about is can a member access many deals, but I would expect this to be the case.
My gut feeling is that you do not represent each deal as user with a home folder. When a new deal is created I would create a folder for that deal and a new group which will be used to control who has access to that folder.
The group will be used to control which members have access to the folder containing the deal. If a member has access to the deal they should be added to the group which has access permissions on the folder.
When a member has access to deal their home folder will contain a link to the folder that contains the information for the deal
When a member logs in they will see one folder for each deal that they have access to in their home folder.
    Does this help

  • Home folder access problem

    Hi,
I have a problem accessing my home folder in the sidebar of Finder and in general starting the Finder from the dock. If I click on the Finder icon in the dock nothing happens, if I click on my home folder in the Finder sidebar a popup message is asking me with which application I want to open my home folder!?. Obviously Finder forgot how to open my home folder.
Finder still opens a normal Finder window if I double click on an existing folder on the desktop but not via Finder menu bar or right mouse menu on the Finder icon. I can still access my home folder via terminal "/Volumes/myname" though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content. It is just the link in the PLACES section of the Finder sidebar that doesn't work.
I have also tried dragging my home folder out of the Finder sidebar and putting it back via Preferences -> Sidebar -> PLACES -> select Home and by dragging it there from Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname
In Terminal I see that my home folder has read/write/execute rights for my user and none for group and others:
    drwx------ myname myname
I have not tried to rename or move my home folder! And I have tried restarting and checking and repairing Disk Permissions via Disk Utility.
The exact error message when trying to open my home folder from the sidebar now is: "The document "myhomefoldername" could not be opened!" But this only came after I picked an arbitrary application to open my home folder with since he kept on asking me which application to use. An obvious choice of course would have been to use Finder but that one doesn't show up as an application.
Any more ideas on how to fix this situation?
    Thanks a lot!

that's not the right place for your home folder.
though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content.
really?! maybe that's the problem. it seems that your home folder has been converted to a package somehow. it should be a regular directory not a package. you can use setFile terminal command to remove the package bit from it so that it becomes a normal folder. You'll have to install Developer tools (they are on the leopard install DVD) to get setFile. alternatively, you can pull just the setFile command from the install DVd using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. Once you've got setFile installed run this in terminal
    setfile -a -b ~

  • Home folder not visible in users folder

My home folder appears to have gone missing from the Users folder in finder. See screenshot - I can see the test account I created and the shared folder but not my home folder.
I can still access my home folder via the sidebar but this causes problems with some software not being able to see my home folder in their browsers (Nikon Capture NX2 being an example).
    Anyone got any ideas?

Check the View Options in the Home folder to make sure the library is selected to be visible:
NOTE: In Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For  Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

Yeah, as I said above I didn't think the username part was necessary.  But the uid and gid are how the system keep track of file owndership.  So that is the important part.  One of the first things I had to learn about stuff when moveing from osx to linux is that the two use very different uids and gids for their systems.  So while I was still dual booting, I would always use 501 as my uid so that I could easily share files.  That way I could keep default file permissions in my home (or /Users in osx) folders.

  • Mac Server 10.6 - some users accounts have no rights on Home folder - help???

    Hi All,
I have been having this problem with a few user accounts run from our OS 10.6.7 Server.
The user accounts are not able to move/delete files or folders. Unable to delete their trash - when logged in to any of our mac minis (10.6.8).
Permissions on home folders on server look fine and comparable with accounts that do not display these probelms. I have tried forcing chown just in case, but no difference.
Any ideas on what I could try next?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
For instance, when the logged in under the network user account, if I try to delete a folder or a file from the desktop (created by the same user) the finder password box appears to allow the changes. The password is accepted fine, but the is not deleted from Desktop. Nothing happens.
On the home folder of the same user as above, the permissions show as:
    _spotlight:custom
    user:read&write
    Staff:read only
    Everyone:read only
These are the same as displayed on other home folders which do not exhibit the same problems.
On the desktop folder of the same user, in the home folder, permissions are:
    user:read&write
    Staff:read only
    Everyone:read only
On other users Desktop folders i see:
    _spotlight:custom
    Everyone:custom
    user:read&write
Which i am unable to replicate myself - no option to add _spotlight and no option for custom.
I would be grateful for any help.

Now I've not done much with OS X programming, but I've done quite a bit of Unix systems work. The client appears to be getting an EAGAIN error (essentially that the syscall didn't complete, but not that it failed). Ideally, it should try again, and perhaps there is something I can set that will have it do a couple of retry attempts before giving up?
However, the error on the server side is the likely culprit. I don't know what the error message regarding com.apple.SystemConfiguration means, but my googling for hints implies that it is some sort of error connecting over the network. To try and debug that, I had both machines connected to the same switch with firewalls turned off and the error continues. The previous lines imply that it is trying to delete a file that it created from the local disk. What bothers me about that is that in the WGM I set the home directory to be "afp://servername/Users" and it shows that it should be either "afp://servername/Users/synctest" or "/Network/Servers/servername/Users/synctest" but the server is accessing the home folder directly, so why an issue with network reachability?
Can anyone offer any hints as to what I should be looking for? I had hoped that PHDs would solve the whole multiple computer issue, but they don't seem to be working reliably for me. Since I get this issue consistently I'm guessing that there is something misconfigured on my end.

    Shawn,
I've done the deletion of those folders a number of times, with no luck.
The most recent attempt to get this to work was:
    1. Delete ~/.FileSync and ~/Library/FileSync from the server machine.
    2. With a brand-new install of OS X on a laptop, create a local administrator, join the server, then login as the user account that wants a mobile account
    3. Look at logs
I still get an exception on the server

as well as the corresponding error on the client.
I'm quite frustrated with the whole situation at this point. I'm sure some folks have gotten it to work, but since it has exceptions like this silently, it slowly corrupts the data in an account. I still want to get it to work, but am skeptical that it will.

  • Home folder location

In our lab environment we have local home folders for all users, but the home folder name does NOT equal the short name of the user who logins. For example, the home folder in Users is called Local HomeDir. The user who authenticated ldap and logs in is mtstest. When they startup Color, it starts erroring stating it can't find /Users/mtstest/documents/color.... and then attempts to create it, which of course, it can't so I get the error message that it can't create it and then quits Color.
I ended up having to have a script run at login and logout that creates a symlink to the user's login name to the local homedir folder.
I've never had this problem with ANY FCP product. Is this a new "feature"? Does Color support home dirs that aren't in the users folder or aren't the same as the users' logged in name?
    Thanks in advance!

Part of the issue is that normally when Color launches for the first time you're asked to choose the location of the media directory (this is what I'm assuming you mean when you say you have changed the location), however, if you don't have the appropriate folder in /Users/, you get various error dialogs stating it cannot find/create the folder, then after dimissing these Color will crash.
Looking at the Preferences.prf file in ~/Library/Preferences/Color/ you can see:
    <prjdir>/Users/markwarren/Documents/Color Documents/</prjdir>
    <rdrdir>/Users/markwarren/Documents/Color Documents/Renders/</rdrdir>
    <srcdir>/Users/markwarren/Documents/Color Documents/Media/</srcdir>
It's these paths that the error dialogs reference when they state they cannot find/create the items.
In the example above, Color will work as there is a folder (specifically a users home folder) called markwarren in /Users/. However, if there is no folder in /Users/ that matches the shortname of the logged in user, you will see the errors.
I understand that normally this would not be an issue, as all local accounts would, by default, have a folder whose name is the shortname of the user account in /Users/. However, it is possible you may wish to have a shared local home folder, or use a product that provides this functionality, or, alternatively, have a network based home folder. In any of these additional scenarios you will see the issue with Color.
Rather than have these error dialogs appear and finally having Color crash after dismissing them, it might have been better for Color to display the dialog allowing you to select the media directory, if it could not access the one as defined in the pref file. That or perhaps paths should not be stored in the pref file, of if you have to do this, use "~/" rather than "/Users/nameofuser/", or better still, just use a standard OS call to find the location of the home folder and work out the path from that.
