Uses for a Performa 550.

Hi,
I just hooked up my Performa 550 and I want to know what I should use it for? Any ideas? Where can I get some more software for it? It runs OS 7.6.1.
Thanks

Dear AR,
It depends on what you wish to do with it. If you can find a copy of Word 5.1, it cn still be a very decent word processing machine. Word 5.1 was probably the most elegant Mac word processing program. It runs on pre-PowerPC macs nicely, doesn't add a lot of overhead, and avoid the problems of later version where MicroSoft tried to make Word all thing to all people. Starting with Word 6, the program was a half-hearted attempt to be word-processor, page layout program, photo editor and a few other things that added a huge amount of overhead. We used Word 5.1 on a Performa 475 with a 25mHz processor for years; it was quite responsive.
I've found old Mac games at surplus stores and Goodwill, Salvation Army, and St. Vincent de Paul stores. Make sure when buying that the program doesn't require a PowerPC processor. Remember that you are severely limited by RAM capacity (max of 36MB), and that there is not much video horsepower available.
According to Mactracker, 7.6.1 is the highest OS version the 550 is supposed to handle.

  • What Container to use for best performance ??

    HI ,
Currently i am using HBox as Container for my Custom Itemrenderer , but due to its layout issues , i want it to change the Container from HBox to Panel .
But i am also worried about the performance , how can i make sure that changng containers didn't affected or affected performance of an Application ?? .

You can run your project using "profile" to verify the performance of each instance in your application.
If you really wanna improve the performace, use Canvas instead.
Take a look in this link to know how to use it:

There should be a User Agent Switcher menu item under Tools, which gives you the browser names you can impersonate.
The menu item name changes to the browser UA you are presently using.
There is also a User Agent Switcher button, you can add it using View -> Toolbars -> Customize, and dragging the button to your toolbar.
    See http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/features/ and http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/help/
You can just start trying IE versions (or the versions it says on the site) until it lets you in.

  • Will using for loop decrease the performance

    Hi,
Will using for loop with a query decrease the performance.
for r_row in (select * from table) Loop
    end loop.
This is done inside another for loop, most of the cases it returns only one value.
will it decrease the peformance of the procedure.
    kindly advice.......

will it decrease the peformance of the procedure.Perhaps it is better to understand just what this PL/SQL loop construct does.
PL/SQL is two languages. It is PL (programming logic code) like Pascal or C or Java. You can use a 2nd language inside it called SQL. The PL engine is clever enough to recognise when the 2nd language is used. And it compiles all the stuff that is needed for the PL engine to call the SQL engine, pass data to the SQL engine and get data back, etc. (compare this with the complexity of using the SQL language in Pascal or C or Java).
So what does that loop do? The PL engine recognises the SQL SELECT statement. It creates an implicit cursor by calling the SQL engine to parse it (hopefully a soft parse) and then execute it.
As part of the PL loop, the PL engine now calls the SQL engine to fetch the data (rows) from the cursor. With 10g and later, the PL engine is smart enough to use implicit bulk processing.
Prior to 10g it used to fetch a row from the SQL engine, do the loop, fetch the next row, do the loop, etc. This means if there is a 1000 rows to fetch, it will call the SQL engine a 1000 times.
With 10g and later it will fetch a 100 rows, store that in an internal buffer and then do the loop a 100 times. With a 1000 rows to fetch, it now only requires 10 bulk fetches instead of a 1000 single row fetches.
These fetches require a context switch - as the PL engine has to step out and into the SQL engine and back, to fetch a row. This is an overhead and thus can become slow the more context switching there is.
And this is the basics for this loop (and most other cursor loops) construct in PL/SQL.
The ideal is to reduce the number of context switches. This is an overhead that can impact on performance.
What about using a loop within a loop. Also "bad". This uses the outer loop to fetch data. This data is then used to drive the fetch in the inner or nested loop. So the outside loop pulls data from the SQL engine into PL variables. The inside loop pushes that very same data back to the SQL engine.
Why? It would have been a lot faster no to pull and push that data between the loops using PL.
It will be a lot faster doing it via SQL only. Write both loops as a single SQL statement and have the SQL engine directly drive these loops itself. This is called a JOIN in SQL. And the SQL engine can do it not only faster, but it has some froody algorithms that can be used that are even faster than a nested loop process (called merge joins, hash joins, etc).
Bottom line. Maximise SQL. Minimise PL.*
Do as much of your data crunching in SQL as possible. SQL is the best and fastest "place" to process data. Not PL (or Pascal/C/Java).

  • Which tool is used for Oracle 11g performance tuning?

  • How is solution manager useful for performance monitoring

    Hi,
I want to check expensive sql statements in production and quality systems. How can solution manager be useful for this.
It would be great if anyone can provide me some documentation on this

    Hi,
In Solution Manager, there is an Early Watch Analysis report which is generated and which has section in the report ' Performance Indicator' in that section you will get 2 things :
    1. Top 10 Transaction codes which has huge response times.
    2. Top 10 program which has huge response times.
and after that you also get the list of expensive SQL statement in the report and then you can just optimize the queries and improve system performance.

  • Using Designer to perform reverse engineering for Adabas entities

    Hi Experts,
Customer will migrate from Adabas to Oracle db. Is it possible to use designer to perform reverse engineering for entities of Adabas?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Queenie

If there is an ODBC driver for Adabas, it MAY be possible, though I have never had an Adabas database to try it on. I know that Adabas isn't natively a relational database using SQL, which is what Designer's Design Capture utility expects, so it will work through ODBC or not at all.

  • Using Garageband for live performances

I would love to hear from anyone who uses GB for live performances. I'm especially interested in how you store and play your music; ie direct from your computer drive, on flash card or thumb drive etc. I'm a one man show with guitar, flute, and keyboard. I'm really new at this and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Gillermo... I might have to eat my words. I had a good think about this last night and I have come up with a plan. Just shooting from the hip and so might need some refinement, but here goes...
The problem as I saw it with Garageband was two fold...
    1. how to lay out several songs or groups of pre recorded tracks and tracks with effects on them for my vocal and guitar and
    2. lack of an easy to use controller of some sort that worked with GB to minimize mouse use, speed up transfer/choosing between songs and organize my set layout with a structure of some sort.
As a result of mucking around with my Korg NanoKontrol and using the plugin for GarageBand, I can now envision a logical system for using GB for Live performance as a one person show.
The NanoK has the ability to control 8 tracks at a time. You have use of Volume, Pan, Mute, Solo as well as the transport buttons when using scene number 1 on the NK. It has the ability to scroll through groups of 8 tracks at a time with dedicated buttons on fader bank 9.
As a simple example, lets take 4 tracks 1. a track dedicated to vocal with some effects on it to taste 2. a track dedicated to guitar with some effects to taste 3. prerecorded bass track (file bounced down to mp3 or similar) and 4. a drum/percussion track set up like track 3.
Now what you have is the use of 4 tracks for your performance ( there are a few other options though). Now if you load tracks 5-6 with the bass and drums of another song and 7-8 with the tracks of yet another song you now have 3 songs you can play/sing from the first fader bank set. These are all visible on the laptop screen.
Now thinking in groups of 8 tracks, the 2nd set of 8 tracks (tracks 9-16) is set up in a similar way with tracks 9-10 duplicates of 1-2 (vox & guitar) and 3 sets of bass and drums (or what ever). You would name each set of bass and drum tracks with the name of the song so you could always find out where you are. You could also apply instrument icons for easier identification.
So starting with fader bank 1 and tracks 1-4 un muted, you would have muted all the other tracks in the entire set ( before you started your show obviously). Hit play, sing your song... hit stop. Hit rewind, mute tracks 3-4, un mute tracks 5-6, hit play when ready and away you go with song No.2. Repeat for song 3. Once you have completed these 3 songs and made sure all of the tracks are muted via the Nano, press the button that moves the controls to the next set of 8 tracks or 3 songs.
Now in terms of performance there would be some trial and error needed to find out how big the project file could be before there were computer performance issues. I read somewhere there was an upper limit of approx 240 tracks in GB. In reality you would be thinking in terms of how many songs there are in your sets. So in this scenario if you had 15 songs in each set you would only need 40 tracks or 5 sets of 8 fader banks.
To minimize performance issues with projects getting on the large side, in between your sets you could close the project with set one in it and open the project file with set 2 in it.
A couple of other layout options would be to use an entire bank of faders for each song. You could have between 5-8 tracks usable per song. You could have a combination of audio, .wav/mp3, electric guitar and software instrument tracks. Simply go through the mute/unmute process as you scroll through your songs.
You could also lock/unlock the odd track for another level of performance optimization, but you would have to use the mouse pad for this as it can't be done via the NK.
The pro's for this type of system are
    1. Complete control of mixing vol & pan for the venue you are in
    2. Very simple control at your finger tips, 2 or more faders at a time, limited mouse use
    3. A logical frame work to create your sets.
    4. You can stay in GarageBand, no need for another software program.
    5. Very cheap investment.
The Con's would all revolve around your computer spec's.
    1. Max out your RAM.
    2. Be selective with effects
    3. System HD speed.
Note, I am assuming my vox and guitar are going through and audio interface with outs to an amp or PA of some sort.
I am going to have to try this out. I really DO NOT LIKE Ableton Live. It is heavy on CPU and gets really deep very quickly. If this works then I will have an Live Serial# for sale.

  • BizTalk Architecture using ESB for High Performance for 10000 requests per minute

    Hi All,
I need to design an architecture for BizTalk ESB for high performance.
We are expecting 10000 requests per minute at peak time.
There is no much business logic but rather messaging scenarios.
    Please suggest.

    Thanks Johns,
When I said Clone, I meant We will have 2 BizTalk Nodes, Application deployed on Both just to balance the Load using F5 Load balancer.
And Yes I have considered the SQL Clustering, but is my idea regarding this is correct if I say:
One Cluster 1 Node 1 Message Box will sit
On Cluster 2 Node 1 Other BizTalk DB's will sit
In case of failure on Cluster 1 Node 1(Message box) It will failover to Cluster 1 Node 2
In case of any other failure on Cluster 2 Node 1 (Other DB's) it will failover to Cluster 2 Node 2

  • HT3275 Verbatim drive I use for Time Machine backups got messed-up. I erased it.  It does now perform its regular back-ups.  HOWEVER, I can't "Enter TM."

I am running OS 10.6.8.  The external Verbatim drive I use for Time Machine backups got messed-up, so I erased it & chose it as my back-up disc for TM.  It does perform its regular back-ups.  HOWEVER, when I try to "Enter TM" nothing happens?

I read some hints about this issue from similar queries, including "Restart your computer".  That did the trick!

  • Just got Prosoft drive genius 3 software, and it's telling me that the external hard drive that i am using for my time machine back up drive needs to be defragmented.  is it wise to do this or should i not??

just got Prosoft drive genius 3 software, and it's telling me that the external hard drive that i am using for my time machine back up drive needs to be defragmented.  is it wise to do this or should i not??

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard
