Uses for ehternet connector on airport express

Is is possible to connect a Macintosh G3 to the Airport Express unit via an ethernet connector in order to get an internet connection? The Airport Express is part of an existing wireless network

My problem with this is I am not a technocrat when it comes to networking. The main router is a wireless ADSL modem made by a company referred to as Gnet. This modem has a wired connection to a G4 tower. There is a wireless connection to both an iMac G5 and a Powerbook G4. The Airport Express has been connected to the iMac G5 wirelessly using the local Gnet network. From there it is wire to a stereo system so that the iTunes library can be played. In close proximity is this old B&W G3 which does not have a wireless card. How do I determine if the main modem is compatible with the Apple WDS?

  • Can i use my ipod touch with airport express?

I will be staying in a hotel that only offers hard wire internet connection.  Can I use my ipod touch with airport express to have have WiFi?  I won't have my computer with me.
    Thanks!

Yes, you can. However, you will not be able to administer the AirPort from the iPod Touch. Thus you would need to pre-configure the AirPort Express to work at the particular hotel that you will be staying at. Note: Most hotels now offer Wi-Fi in the rooms and the Express may not be necessary.

You may be having problems with your battery. However, they were not caused by using your iPad charger. The iPad charger is compatible with the iPhone and can safely be used with it. If your phone is less than a year old, you may want to take it to your nearest Apple Store and have them take a look at it. If the battery is not functioning correctly, they will replace it for you.

  • Using the USP Port on Airport Express for Something Other Than a Printer

Can you use the Airport Express for, let's say, making a thumbdrive wireless? Or perhaps a wired keyboard wireless?
    Will that work?
If not, is there a device that will make a USB product wireless?

You may want to invesitgate the Keyspan USB Server.

  • Extend Verizon 802.11g router using AEBS in bridge mode for better reception by Airport Express at other end of apt.?

I connect to the internet using a Verizon FIOS router, 802.11g. The brand name is Actiontec MI424-Rev. D. I stream music from my MacBook Pro and/or iPhone and use an Airport Express to connect to my stereo receiver, which is wired to in-wall speakers. The streaming experience is pretty uneven. The Apple Store recommended an Airport Extreme to beef up the network. Note: this is an average Manhattan apartment, not a vast mansion, but there is lots of interference due to a couple dozen other wireless networks in my building. Which is the best way to set up the network for more robust streaming and fewer dropouts?

Ok, then let's start with the following as the basic configuration of your "single" wireless network.
The Actiontec will be the main Internet router; no configuration changes would be required.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly to the Actiontec router by Ethernet; reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge, and also, reconfigure the AEBSn as the "main" base station in the extended wireless network.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), by wireless to the AEBSn. Configure the AXn to extend the wireless range of the AEBSn.
The following are step-by-step instructions on configuring the AirPorts for an extended network:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
Temporarily connect the AXn directly to one of the available LAN ports on the AEBSn during the setup phase. Once completed, disconnect the AXn and place it at the desired location.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the AEBSn.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click Internet in the toolbar, and then, click on the Internet Connection tab. Change Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)."
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click on the Wireless tab.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the AXn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

  • Looking for help on connecting Airport Express to Belkin F5D7230-4

I have been reading post after post with a similar problem with help. From other post, it sounds like this Belkin router will work with Airport Express(AE), but I have not found help on how to make it work.
    Here is the problem.
I need to extend my internet signal from my office to my living room. The Belkin router is connected to my cable modem in my office. The Express is in my kitchen (between the two rooms). I set it up for expanding the signal and the light on the AE continues to flash yellow. I have called Apple and they were able to help me set it up, but it only works for AirTunes (and I am guessing anything plugged into the USB port), but NOT for internet.
Here are some of the things I have tried.
~~ I have connected the AE to the cable modem to check that is does work, and it does.
~~ I have moved the device closer to the router and still not working.
~~ I have made sure the Belkin settings are set for WDS, which it always was. I have reset the router and the AE.
What am I missing? Do I need an updated firmware? I have read on another post about a D-Link that needed DHCP and NAT disabled, but I don't understand how to do that and on which device? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the article. I have read that before.
The WDS was already enabled on my router so that did not help. There is something else missing somewhere on these steps that I am not understanding.
I assume that the AP direction is meant if I plan to use the Belkin router as an AP not the main router? Where in this case the AP is actually my Express, and my express does not have a similar interface to change things to the settings mentioned.

  • Using Kodak AiO 5500 over Airport Express- works on my Mac, but not on PC

The subject says it all, folks. Just got a new Airport Express 802.11n and hooked up both printers (Samsung ML-1740 and Kodak AiO 5500) with a powered USB hub. Both printers are visible in Airport Utility (and Bonjour Printer Services in Windows).
I'm running OS 10.6.3 on a MacBook Pro, 15" 2.4GHz Core2Duo system. On this system I can use both the Kodak and Samsung, no problem. But then on both of my parents' PCs only the Samsung printer works, although I can see both using Airport Utility and Bonjour Printer Service.
What the heck is going on??
    Thanks in advance!

I would perform the following steps for testing:
    1. Disconnect the Samsung printer, so that just the Kodak printer is connected.
    2. Disable the firewall at the Windows machine (the Windows one and all third party)
    If that's successfull, you can
    3. Re-enable the firewall and you probably need to allow traffic on port 9100 (not 100% sure about the exact port)
    4. Re-connect the Samsung printer

  • What is the ip port number for a 1st generation airport express

I have recently upgraded my home wireless router from a Linksys EA2700 to a EA6500.  The EA2700 worked fine with my 1st generation Airport Express.  Since I have mavericks on my laptop (Airport Utility 6.x is incompatible with Airport Express/b/g) I used Airport Utility 5.6.1 on my Windows 7 laptop.  When I goto select my home wireless network in the APU drop down menu to select a network, my home wireless network never shows.
Linksys says it might be a problem with port forwarding and they need to know the ip port number of  1st Generation Appler Express.
    Thanks. -Rob

AirPort Utility can be used to configure and change the settings on any of the AirPorts.
If you have a Mac, AirPort Utility is here:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
If you have a PC, AirPort Utility for Windows is on the disk that came with the AirPort Express

  • Best router for compatability with Mac & Airport Express?

I need to buy a wireless router, and know little about them. This will be for home use, and will be used for 2 people with their own computers. Distance is not a factor, as it's just a regular house, although the router may have to be placed in the garage, where the modem is currently located.
Does Linksys or NetGear generally work best with Mac hardware, or are they fairly even in that respect? I was told by a salesperson yesterday that the NetGear is easier to configure, but that the Linksys provides better security.
I looked at a NetGear WGT624 v3 ($50), and a Linksys WRT54GS ($90). I figure its best to go with the cheaper one, since a new wi-fi standard is expected later this year, and I'll probaby upgrade. Do routers have software to log the history of addresses visited, or is there software available to do this or to prevent my history from being logged? I'm just thinking about keeping my web activity private from the other user, as well as being able to check if their activity is all legal, since they'll be sharing my ISP.

  • Enough bandwith to usa a NAS server for itune & stream via Airport Express?

    Hi,
i posted this question in the itunes forum, but got zero feedback. i was hoping someone here could possibly answer my question :
I was thinking of getting a ByteCC LANDisk NAS to use as an itunes music 'jukebox' server for 2 macs (a G5 and a macbook). I have a Airport Express that i'd like to use to stream music to my living room stereo via itunes,
My question is is there enough bandwith to stream from the NAS server to the macs, and then to also stream the audio to the living room stereo via the airport express at the same time?
I'm sure someone must've atempted this set up
Any help or info is apreciated!

This works. I have a WD Netcenter (320G) which I store my main iTunes library on (holding down the command key when starting iTunes allows you to chose which library you want to use). I'm not using an Airport base (D-Link and now a Zyxel) and I can stream music AND video no problem - all my movies are on there too and they play fine through Front Row.
Oh and I usually mount it as nfs rather then smb - handy little apple script for this which I run as an app (when are Apple going to bring out a proper location manager that automounts networked drives etc based on where you are?!!!).
    Have fun.

  • Unusual Senario: Use Time Capsule to extend Airport Express network

I have an less common senaria here. I'd like to keep the TC on my desk and hide away the ugly cable modem. This is what I want to accomplish:
    - Connect my airport express (802.11n model) to the cable modem and use it as the base station, in b/g/n mode.
    - Wirelessly extend the above network to my TC.
    - The TC will only be connected via ethernet and N equipped computer, so I want to run it in N (5GHz) only mode.
After some research, it seems to be not feasible, can anybody please confirm? Thanks for help.

If  you are asking about extending using wireless only......Yes, if your existing network is being created by another Apple wireless router.
In this case, the Time Capsule would need to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal in order to extend it correctly.

  • Data rate slows over time: Using Time Capsule (4th) and AirPort Express (1st)

Time Capsule using Airport Express to extend network.
Over 3-4 days my data rate gradually gets slower and slower until I have to reboot both TC and AE.
Fresh reboot gets me 10Mbs or better for a while and then slows over time to 2Mbs or less.
I can cable directly to the ISP modem, taking TC and AE out of the equation, and its smokin fast
No hair left to pull out, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You have your wireless channels on auto.. it is usually better to control it.
You will notice I have different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. then I can force the link to either band.
After you set Radio Channel selection to Manual,, click edit. You can then set the channels.
Lock the channels.. ie you take control and you set what the wireless channels will be.. when you extend wireless this works far better. The auto channel system has to run on the Extender.. but since the main base is fixed on the 2.4ghz so it will be also.. the only channel that can flap around is 5ghz (extender) since that is not under my control. Of course it is up to you to determine which channel works best.. I strongly recommend the upper channels for 2.4ghz and the lower channels for 5ghz.
So.. I have set 5ghz to 48 on the main base.. and the auto channel sets it to 149 in the extender.
One strange thing results from my setup .. (amongst many!!)
You cannot name the wireless for 5ghz in the extender.. so in my case the upstairs wireless extender has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz named TC24ghz.. nought that I can do about it. But it is not a big deal.
You can see the result in the wireless diagnostics. The last wireless I have put in the box.. it is named TC24ghz but is in fact running on 5ghz. That is just how the over automated system of the apple routers work.. If I could I would fix it.. and maybe shall via serial console at a later date.

  • Which Admin Utility version for old 802.11g Airport Express?

Which version of the Admin Utility should I use for my Airport Express which is about 5 years old, maybe more?
And what about firmware updates? I have Windows XP.
My Airport uses 802.11, 802.11b and 802.11g, not the current 802.
Currently I have Admin Utility version 4.2.
The Airport won't recognize my networked hard drive and my only hope is to update the software.

I believe WDS won't halve the bandwidth on the master, only on the slave (which won't matter, because it will be more than fast enough for airtunes). And the extreme will be faster than your modem anyway, even if the bandwidth were to be halved. Unless you've got some seriously fast contract. But in any case, I doubt it will work using one of the other methods. I had this problem in the past (as it happens, my b/g AE died, and I now have two n units, connecting using 'join'), and I wasn't able to make it work using something other than the WDS option. But you could always try yourself of course. If you put your b/g AE on ebay and buy a b/g/n unit, you'll be able to use the join and extend options.
Btw, you don't have to disable the WAN port on the express, because it actually isn't only a WAN port - it works both ways. You could connect it to a blu-ray player that wants to connect to the internet for example, or any other device that has an ethernet port.
But yes, you have to connect to both routers together, as one network is what you want. And to answer your last question, I'm pretty sure that airtunes will first go through the extreme, an then to the express. But why don't you set it up in WDS mode and see how you like it? I certainly had no problems with it when I had the b/g AE.
