I'm considering upgrading to the new 3G iPhone. What happens to the old iPhone? Can it be used as a simple music player with the phone feature turned off?

Yes, you actually have to buy the iPhone 3G to upgrade from your old iPhone. You will get the $199/$299 price. If you had bought it after May 27th, you could have exchanged it in-store with a $20 restocking fee, but this isn't the case, so you will get the subsidized price of $199/$299.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get aCode 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Updateentries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

Uses for old iPhone when it has been replaced with a new model

Wondering what, if anything, I can do with my first generation iPhone now that I've upgraded to the 3GS. Can I still use the old phone sort of like I would an iPod Touch? Can I synch my music and/or photos with both iPhones - with the same Mac computer? If so, do I need to (or should I) remove the SIM card in the older iPhone? If it is an issue, I have 3 Mac computers in the house, so I could synch the iPhones with different Macs... Any ideas?

SSIS 2014 Custom Component: "The component metadata could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component."

I recently upgraded my set of custom data flow components to use the SQL 2014 SDK as we are upgrading to SQL Server 2014 RTM. The only change I made to my custom components was to change the references to the following DLLs from version 11.0 to version
12.0:
Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSPipelineWrap
Microsoft.SQLServer.DTSRuntimeWrap
Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS
Microsoft.SqlServer.PipelineHost
After rebuilding my assembly, adding it to the GAC, and placing it in the appropriate directory structure (the 120\DTS\PipelineComponents directory for both the x86 and x64 versions), my components no longer display in the SSIS toolbox in SSDT. In
addition, whether loading up my packages in SSDT or executing them via the SSIS catalog (in SQL 2014), I get the series of error messages below. I do have a PerformUpgrade method implemented in my packages that has worked successfully through previous
component upgrades. I also found this seemingly relevant thread (Custom
SSIS Connection Manager error message in SSIS 2014 (RTM): The connection manager '' is not properly installed on this computer.) and tried modifying the extensions.xml script, but I was unsuccessful with this approach (though I could have done so
incorrectly).
Validation error. DFT Process Changes: DFT Process Changes: The component metadata for "xxx, clsid {874F7595-FB5F-40FF-96AF-FBFF8250E3EF}" could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component. The PerformUpgrade method failed.
Error loading xxx.dtsx: The "xxx" failed to cache the component metadata object and returned error code 0x80131600.
Error loading xxx.dtsx: Component xxx, clsid {874F7595-FB5F-40FF-96AF-FBFF8250E3EF} failed to initialize due to error 0xC0047067 "The "%1" failed to cache the component metadata object and returned error code 0x%2!8.8X!.".

Please also update the reference to the SSIS assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Design located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\120\SDK\Assemblies folder to the version 12.0.0.0. Besides, rename IDTSxxxx110 objects to IDTSxxxx120.
It may also be the factor that the custom mapping file is not created correctly. You can make a copy of the built-in mapping.xml.sample file, rename its extension to XML, and then edit its <ExtensionMapping> attribute:

oldAssemblyStrongName="MyCustomAssembly.MyCustomTask, MyCustomAssembly, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91"

Then, we need to upgrade the packages, and SSIS will read all the XML mapping files placed in this directory during upgrade.

Another thing to remember is the phone is actually usable for 911 calls and maybe others. Not a real good idea. Especially for a child.
It would depend however on the age of the child.

Thanks for your prompt response, however I have first seen it now. I have placed an active SIM card in the iPhone turned it off and on. It now says SIM locked, please write access code. The problem is I don't remember the password. When I connect it to iTunes it tell me that I have to write the password before it can be used with iTunes...... Do you have any good ideas? Most do, but why won't some, of my own music sync when others off the same album and in the same playlist do? Yes you can use it as an iPod. I use my old iPhone 4 as an iPod. When you restore an iPhone(on iTunes), it should still recognise the iPhone as an iPhone and go through the new phone set up process. Once you have set the phone up there is a message saying 'No sim card installed!' but you can ignore the message and use the phone as an iPod.

My iPhone 5s has stopped working (the home button was sporadically unresponsive and is now completely unresponsive), so I've opened a ticket to have it repaired by Apple and they're going to send a box to me. However, I'm not thrilled about the idea of not having a phone at all. Is it possible for me to use my old iPhone 4 while my 5s is being repaired by Apple? Would it be complicated? I'm with Verizon Wireless in the United States.

Actually, you might be able to download Angry Birds to your iPhone 4. Your App Store downloads/purchases are tied to your Apple ID, not your iPhone. Angry Birds only requires iOS 5+ to run. And IIRC, it associates to GameCenter (which also uses your Apple ID), so you might even be able to pick up right where you left off.
And you should be able to even sign into your iCloud on your iPhone 4, and if your Contacts, for example, were synced with iCloud, those should come back over. While you can't restore a 'full backup', you can definitely get a lot of the same functionality on your 'backup' iPhone.

Nope. I've already turned off cellular data. It happens regardless, as soon as it is done powering on.
I suspect it might just be built into the phone's firmware to do that... and I have to hit "ignore" whenever it happens, but I just wanted confirmation of that...

I too would like to use my original iphone (first gen) as an ipod touch.
I moved my orig iphone sim card into my 3Gs when I got the new iphone...and then put an old sim card I had around into the orig iphone when the screen displayed that it needed a sim card.
Now the orig iphone only displays the familiar "USB cable to iTunes" pic and when I try to go thru the activation in iTunes the processes wants to create a new ATT account and plan for me. (I called ATT while doing this and the person confirmed that this is what would happen if I followed through.)
Is the ONLY WAY to use an original iphone (as an ipod) WITHOUT the original sim card to jailbreak it?
