Using '09 iMac as Target Display via Thunderbolt Cable Fail

I have a peculiar situation that I hoping someone can decipher with certainty:
I have a late 2009 iMac core i7, 27" running 10.9.1
I just received a Mac Pro - my plan was to use the iMac as a display for the Mac Pro at least for a while. I purchased a thunderbolt cable. I have connected the mac pro via thunderbolt cable to the mini display port on the iMac.
Unfortunately I simply cannot get CMD-F2 to work, or FN-CMD-F2 on the iMac. I have tried PRAM resets etc. The system does nothing when I hit those keys. I verified the mac pro is working via HDMI.
I am now wondering if I have the right cable. I understood thunderbolt and mini display port to be interchangeable and backward compatible so that my situation would work.
What am I missing? Thanks much, really would like to get this mac pro on screen without buying a new monitor!

I found that MDP iMac MUST use a MDP cable. Which of course is not as easy to come by as the thunderbolt which I picked up. Really annoying.

  • My MacBook gets tweaky when I use the iMac as a display... suggestions?

When hooking up my MacBook Pro to my iMac (to use the iMac as a display, via Thunderbolt) it causes my MacBook to be tweaky, slow, taking too long to think, and then keeps Photoshop all the way to the right when I disconnect the iMac... any suggestions? I love using the big screen as a monitor, but need the luxury of the lap top for work (we travel a lot, and I cannot exactly tote around a giant 27' iMac...). I use Photoshop CS5 and I'm usually running it at the same time as Mail and Google Plus, but that's usually it. I have my Time Machine hooked up to back me up in case anything happens, of course, but I want the speed of the laptop even if it's hooked up to the iMac!
    Thank you!

Can the iMac work as a display the same as the Apple display?
Only if it's a 27-inch model. Other Macs require a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler, which will be much slower.

  • Using Macbook 2015 with old iMac in target display mode?

Opinions about the new 12 inch Macbook 2015 aside, I am wondering if I can use my 27 inch iMac mid-2011 in Target Display Mode.
I also had trouble finding "daisy chain" solutions to this. Ex. An accessory that will allow me to charge the Macbook while also providing a thunderbolt port in order to output the display into my iMac.
Am I just being too impatient? I have a feeling I will need to buy a load of different adapters just to try and work with the new Macbook's USB C...
Just for more information, I'm currently using my 15 Inch Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012 connected to my 27 inch iMac in target display mode through a thunderbolt cable. I'm just hoping I can have this simple setup also work with the new Macbook 2015..
    Thanks.

Yes, that model supports Target Display Mode. You will have to wait for Apple to provide adaptors for such use.

  • Use iMac(2012) as Display on Thunderbolt PC

    Hi all,
I'm currently thinking about getting the new iMac 27" when its finally available in December. Currently I'm only using a PC and I'd like to keep the PC for gaming and Windows specific Software. In this case I'd like to use the iMac as PC-Display. Unfortunately the new iMac will only have Thunderbolt connectors.
My first question is if i'll be possible to use these Thunderbolt-Ports as Video inputs and secondly if it'll be possible to connect a Thunderbolt-equipped PC to the iMac and use it as Display in Taget Display Mode (e.g. with Asus P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt Mainboard).
As long as it's not possible to connect a PC to an iMac and use it as Display I'll not be able to switch to Apple.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Why not install MS Windows on the new iMac and run your video games on the iMac, you can run your games natively in MS WIndows by using Boot Camp for the best user experience.
iMac's have had Thunderbolt connections since 2011 so this isn't anything new. However to answer  your question about a Thunderbolt equipped PC, you need to contact the developer and see if their boards support Target Display Mode on Macs. That is the name of the feature you are inquiring about. You can find out more about TGM by reading Apple's Target Display Mode 2011 Macs article.

  • Macbook pro thunderbolt cable to imac in target display. The imac also has a thunderbolt display. Will the macbook control all three monitors

I have a macbook retina and a imac 2012. I am looking at getting a thunderbolt display. I have currently my macbook retina connected to my imac and using target display when i need the other display. I am thinking of getting another display to use on my imac for when i need more room on my imac. My question is what will happen when i switch my imac in target display for my macbook. the ask a question person said my macbook will take control of all three but this other website said the thunderbolt would turn into the primary for my imac and the imac would be my secondary for my macbook. I was wondering if anyone knows for sure or can try it and tell me.

Assuming you have a 27-inch iMac, you use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable. If it happens to be a 21-inch model, no combination of display cables or adaptors will work.

Is there are a way to use my imac as a display for my macbook pro? I have a thunderbolt cable but it doesnt seem to do anything

    Hello eassic,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like Target Display Mode may be what you are looking for:
Target Display Mode lets you use a Mac as the external display for another “primary” Mac. In some cases, you can also play the sound from your primary Mac on the speakers of the external Mac. For example, a MacBook Pro could use a 27-inch iMac as the display and play its audio on the iMac as well.
OS X Mountain Lion: Use another Mac as a display
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
    1. Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
    2. Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
    3. Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
    4. If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.
    Thanks,

  • IMac 2013 and PC via Thunderbolt in TDM

    Hi all,
today I do have an IMAC 2010 connecte to a PC via a display port cable.
This works fine and is a perfect solution to limit the space used on the Desk.
So now I am planning to move on to an IMAC 2013. As those new models do no longer supply a display port and do only support the target display mode through thunderbolt, I also need to change the mainboard in the PC. I want to continue to use the PC as my gaming machine. A MAC simply doesn't deliver the Grafix power for  gaming.
So doing some research in the WEB I didn't get a clear message if anybody has a working setup with e PC connected to a new iMAC in target display mode. It sounds like the MAC in incompatible and simply accepts only macbooks or Mac mini as client. If this is really the case I am srewed up and I need to question my investments in the Apple eco-system.
Is there anybody out in the world who is successfully using a PC connected to an iMac in TDM?

I've now tried another Brand new Apple Thunderbolt cable, and it still does not work.
Having spent Hours trawling the Web I've decided to give up :-(. I've only seen one person who claims to have connected with a PC, and that was 2 Years ago. There are countless others who have failed....
It seems that even a Macbook Pro running Windows with Bootcamp cannot connect via TDM, even though the same machine running OSX will work fine.
It seems Apple don't want this to work :-(. This seems strange as older DisplayPort iMacs are known to work fine with PC's, PS3's, Xbox's etc. using HDMI and DVI adapters.
I'm regretting recently upgrading to this 2013 model now...

  • No sound on iMac in target display mode

    I've got a late 2009 27" iMac running Yosemite.
When I connect either my MBP (Yosemite, late 2011 15") or my wife's rMBP (Mavericks, 2012 15") to the iMac using a mini Display Port cable and switch the iMac to target display mode using Cmd-F2, sound no longer works.
Previously, when the iMac was running Mavericks, the laptops would route sound to the iMac via HDMI audio (I think) on the mDP cable and sound would be output via the iMac speakers or headphones attached to the iMac. Since upgrading the iMac to Yosemite, sound no longer plays.
This occurs regardless of the laptop OS, Mavericks or Yosemite. The sound icon on the laptop get greyed out and shows that it is going to the "Color LCD" but no sound is output via the iMac.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Humm... I might go TosLink between the iMac and the FastTrack and then run the USB connection to the MacBook Pro when your using it in Target Display Mode.
Or vise Versa, leave the USB connected to the iMac and use the TosLink connection for the MacBook Pro.

  • Blurry fonts in iMac in Target Display Mode

When I connect Macbook Pro retina with iMac using Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable, and use iMac in Target Display Mode the text and fonts are really blurry.
It is the same text in Macbook:
    Text in iMac:
The resolution of iMac display is "Best for display", however, I have tried to change it without any success.
Does anyone has similar problem or anyone knows how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I have found an interesting regularity. If I open window (let's say PDF file) in Macbook Pro and drag it to iMac, then everything is okey. Unless I resize it. Once I resize it, it becomes blurry/smooth again.
Why had this problem and how to fix it?
Changing the resolution in Macbook Pro can help, but 1) I need to change the resolution in Macbook every time when I connect external monitor 2) I cannot resize windows in iMac 3) if I change resolution in Macbook Pro items become really small, so it is hard to see something.
    Please help!

Is it possible to use an iMac as the display for a Mac mini?

iMacs late 2009 or newer can be used in Target display
mode.  Any older, no can do.
The only other way is via network Screen Sharing or
some otherVPN network like solution.  The issue here
though is that video performance will be pretty severely
    hampered.

Have most recent macbook pro connected to thunderbolt via thunderbolt cable.  Occasionally when I close my laptop the thunderbolt display goes black and does not come back on---even in response to keyboard.  Help

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

    I hope this helps!

  • When connecting Macbook Air to iMac, have to keep Macbook Air open in order to use the iMac as a display.

When I connect my Macbook Air to my iMac with Thunderbolt, I have to keep my Macbook Air open or else the iMac does not sense it. I've tried closing it to just use the iMac as the display, but then the iMac goes back to its regular screen. Also, I have to control everything from the MBA keyboard and touchpad- my iMac mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work. How do I fix this?

    Hi there,
Apple outline the steps to do so in the link I've posted below. If you need help with any of them, just shout.

  • Brightness iMac in target display mode: who has it working in 10.6.8?

"With Target Display mode, you can use your iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or  iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) with Mac OS X as an external display.": http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924 . "Use the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac to adjust display brightness and sound volume and to control media playback of applications running on the 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode."
This used to work perfectly for me. But under 10.6.8, the brightness control stopped working. Sound and media control still work as expected. I posted before on this.
Now I know more people are experiencing this problem... I am looking for people who DO have it working under 10.6.8!
I'm looking for anything I can do to get it to work, maybe the info from people who have it working gives me some clues.
Lion is just around the corner. Please let me know if Lion fixes this problem for you.
    Thanks!
    Maarten

I'm using two 27" imacs  and one of them is still on 10.6.8 one has been upgraded to Lion just now.
I thought it was the Lion update which caused this issue for me because I installed  10.6.8 on both of them today as well.
Now I can't adjust the brightness in target display mode on either  27" imac.... worse that that it sets it to full brightness too.
I don't know of I want to try to go back to before 10.6.8 with time machine,  talk about gutted ?
can you use monitor calibration as a work around ?
I found TS3919 but it doesn't work BTW , it says to set the brigthness before entering target display mode..

  • Ichat video not working when screen sharing into iMac in target display

I have my MBP (current model) plugged into my 27" iMac and using it as an external monitor. If I screen share into the running iMac from my MBP, several things aren't working properly. When I try to use iChat video, iChat crashes. Full size images don't show up in iPhoto or Preview. Both of these things do work on the iMac when it is not acting as my display when screen sharing into it. Is there a fix for this? As I would still like to be able to use some functions on my iMac through screen sharing when it is being used as my display for the MBP.

You are on your MBP. You have the iMac in Target Display Mode. You are using the iMac's display with the MBP with TDM. At the same time you are using Screen Sharing on the MBP to access your iMac.
Screen Sharing is never a full size view, it is always a window on the Mac's display with a smaller than full size resolution.
The 27" iMac's iSight is not available to use when the iMac is in Target Display Mode. Neither are its USB or FireWire ports.

  • Using 2011 iMac as external display for new Retina macbook / port sharing question

I'd like to see if there is a way to use the firewire port on the back my 2011 iMac 27" when it's connected to my 2014 15" Retina Macbook.
The two work fine right now - the iMac is the main display for the macbook, but I wanted to know if there is a way to utilize the extra ports - namely the firewire port on the iMac through the Macbook. I've created aggregate devices before - would this be the way to go?
    Thanks!

    Hello gstern1994,
Yes you can. Form the article below you should be able to do that, just make sure that you plug in those devices when you have already set up the Target Display Mode on the iMac.
