Using 10.6 NetBoot v1.0 with Tiger client images on PPC tray-loading iMacs

Hi all - I'm a bit confused over some documentation I'm reading. I'm reviewing the "System Imaging and SW Update Admin" guide for Snow Leopard Server (available at http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/SystemImaging_and_SW_Update_Adminv10.6.pdf) and am puzzled on a few things.
We have several older tray-loading iMacs that currently have client images served up from an old Xserve running OS X Server (Tiger). In the first part of the guide, I saw that the Snow Leopard System Image utility would not work for creating images from older PPC-based systems. However, later in the guide it refers to enable NetBoot 1.0 (which can run alongside NetBoot 2.0) for older clients - specifically including the tray-loading iMac.
So my question is, how can I go about retiring the old Xserve and still serve/maintain these Tiger client images on Snow Leopard Server?
Can I simply copy the images to the share point in the new Snow Leopard Server and enable NetBoot 1.0? Would I need to create a new image (using the Snow Leopard Server System Image Utility) that starts from a source Tiger installation disc and then add appropriate software as packages? Or can I simply use those existing images (with what I presume means software cannot be added) and serve them up on Snow Leopard Server?
Basically, I have those tray-loading iMacs running a fairly minimal setup (base operating system, ability to join to our LDAP server, and very lightweight open source programs). As (if) they die, we are replacing them with newer Intel-based systems. Having said that, there are still at least 9 or so of these tray-loading iMacs quietly humming along with no indication of failure in the near future (nice job, Apple). It's not a problem if I cannot add software to the images (as it seems most software would require Leopard anyway) - but I would like to serve these up on the network. Any thoughts/ideas?

You can copy your existing images to the 10.6 server, enable NetBoot 1.0, and they will be served up just fine. The only thing you would need 10.4 server for is to create new images.

  • Samba on Linux with Tiger clients

Maybe someone can help me with this, I am not sure if this is the place to ask or not... I have a new Linux (SuSE 10) server running Samba. My issues are two-fold. My Tiger clients have to authenticate manually -twice in order to be able to log in. Second, and this is more important, I cannot write to the Home directory once connected, I get a message saying I do not have permission whenever I try to transfer files. Has anyone seen this? Permissions are set to Read/Write on the Linux box. Any help would be appreciated!

  • Using the server to share files with the clients

    Hello everybody!
I finally managed to install properly iFolder on a server, and the client on a few computers. Unfortunately, I was suprised to see there is no functionality to upload from the server to the ifolders structure.
I need to achieve this because the server I used is also used as a datacenter; I hoping to make the data available to each user directly on their own desktop using the mechanism integrated in the iFolder framework.
Obviously, I would like to avoid copying back with ssh or ftp the files to one local client, and forth to the server using iFolder.
The simplest thing would be to install a client on the server machine as well. Unfortunately, the folder monitoring function only works for graphical client, and my server does not have X installed.
So my last resort would be to connect by ssh to the server machine, then start a non graphical web browser, connect to https://localhost/ifolder/ and share each file one by one... Really time consuming and annoying!
    Does someone have any suggestion?
Thanks a lot for your help!
    Cheers

    Hi
AFAIK if you create a common directory on the server, then use the web
admin interface to create a shared resource, then add the users.

GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - Driver Version: 260.19.29
First, thanks a lot for your quick help. I am actually deeply impressed by the speed!
Now, I don't know whether it is because I could not explain well my problem, or just because I can not understand your answer, but don't see what you're exactly suggesting me to do....
    1) create a common directory: Do you mean I physically create a directory (mkdir /pathtodata/)? Or I create an new folder in ifolder using the web interface?
    2) What is as "shared ressource"? I cannot find any reference to this term in the user manual. Do you just mean I share the ifolder I created in the previous step?
    3) Add the users: I imagine this is the step where I share the ressource with the user.
Again, I am really sorry if my hesitations are stupid and the answer is obvious, but I read all the documentation and I cannot figure out the answer.
Thanks a lot for your help

Thats a starting point for me.

  • Leopard MDC with Tiger Clients?

I'm well aware of the rule which states MDCs should be the same as, or no more than one version ahead of, the cleints.
    So far so good.
Does this mean I can update the MDCs to 10.5.1 server whilst leaving clients on 10.4.11 for the time being?
Trying to update the entire system in one go will spoil my Christmas!

It is possible, if you're using the latest version (1.4.2). Won't work with an earlier version.
Read the release notes for 1.4.2 -- it has specific instructions on exactly what configs are supported and how to upgrade to it.

  • Using TOAD 7.6.0.11 with Oracle Client 10g (Release 2)

So far, I've been using Oracle Client 9i.
I decided to install Oracle Client 10g and thus copied 9i's tnsnames.ora over to 10g. The problem is when I fire up TOAD. It doesn't show the 10g client in the drop down menu nor in the Oracle Home Editor button. It only shows 9i (i.e., ias_home)
How do I make 10g visible to TOAD?

Use SQL Developer or try to post it in other forum...<br>

  • How do you login as different user with Leopard client

    Hi All,
I have an OS X server running 10.4.10. I've never had this problem when connecting to it with Tiger clients.
With Leopard clients, I'm trying to login as administrator. There's no way to do it. I don't show any connected servers (or mounted shares) and when I choose "Connect to Server" it shows the Server Address IP dialog as usual, but once you click OK, it brings up the Shares dialog box with share only available to standard users.
In the old days, once I chose the IP for a server, it would give me the name and password dialog box and I'd put in the credentials for whoever and get the correct shares dialog. Now I can't get to the name and password dialog, and no shares are mounted.
I've tried holding down all kinds of key combinations, but if there's one that does it, I can't find it.
    Please help.
BTW - another topic that doesn't even come close to showing up in Apple's kbase.
    Thanks. Mike.

in the finder under the column view there are 2 buttons that show up when you select the server.. one is "share screen" and the other is "connect as", if you have guest enables on your server and you connect to it through the shared section in the finder you will connect as guest. By using the connect as button you will connect as a user.

  • Mounting remote AFP volumes on Panther Server from Tiger client.

Has anyone else had this problem....
When connecting to a remote AFP share hosted on a Mac OS X 10.3.9 server I receive a message "Mount Failed, Could not mount volume “sharename.”. This happens when I enter the FQDN followed by the share name, for example "afp://servername.domain.co.uk/sharepoint". The client is part of an Open Directory domain and automounts work fine during boot as the home directory sharepoint works with local and remote homes. I have setup many 10.3.9 servers and have never encountered this issue on a Panther client.
Any help would be much appreciated and its driving me to distraction!
    Regards
    James.

We are not using the server for users' home directories, but thanks for that tip.
Today we have also started having issues at another site with a 10.3.8 server and Tiger clients. The behavior is a little different: when connecting to the Pather server with Tiger clients using a keychain-saved password, the client machine will freeze and must be rebooted. The server is showing no process crashes. Deleting the keychain and entering the password each time fixes the problem.
At the other site, the server is 10.3.9 and when Tiger clients tried to connect using a keychain password, their machine would get a spinning beach ball, but they could get out of it.

  • Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

I can not use Photoshop 5.5 completely with Tiger 10.4.6 on PowerBook G4 15". Some features on the palette, such ac the cropping tool is simply not available. I have re-installed Photoshop 5.5, but no luck. Photoshop 5.5 works fine under 10.4.6 in Pismo with G4 upgrade. What gives?

It sounds like it is time to upgrade to Photoshop 7 or later. If it doesn't work properly in Classic, and you are finding your Pismo is becoming unworkable, either replacing it with another Pismo or Mac OS 9 booting machine is advisable, or upgrading to a Mac OS X native version of the software is advisable.

  • Using iPod Shuffle 4G with Tiger

    Hi All,
Can anyone help? I want to use my iPod Shuffle 4th gen with an old iMac G5 running Tiger. I know it should not sync but am I right in thinking I can use the iMac to charge it from the USB when my laptop (which is running Snow Leopard) is away from home?
Syncing would be good too if anyone knows a way around this problem.
    Thanks

Spotify can sync a 4th gen shuffle on Tiger. You need to get the shuffle going on another ITunes 10 machine first and get spotify to do it's magic later.

  • Using a Belkin UPS with Tiger 10.4.7

I bought a Belkin UPS to protect the mac from power outages but their Bulldog Plus software doesn't detect the USB connection after the mac goes to sleep.
So every day I have to restart the mac to keep the Bulldog's <UPS disconnect!> error message from interupting my work every minute. (And to communicate with the UPS in the event of a power failure)
Does anyone here use the System Preferences>Energy Saver>UPS option to control the shutdown process in the event of power failure? Does it work?
Belkin support for macs is sketchy at best. Is all this restarting bad for the iMac?
    iMAC G4 1 GHz 1024mb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

There are some good threads on UPS over in the G5 Forum, and a couple people who use Belkin.
You should be able to use Energy Saver AND Bulldog software (latest version?)
Found that one Quad on APS RS1500 really needed to use PowerChute (1.3.3) along with native support built into Tiger to work in all situations.
I don't need PowerChute for my MDD to recognize that it is on a UPS. Because I have more backup power than needed (have an extra battery power pack add-on that offers 2-3 hrs runtime) I've never gotten to the point where it was forced into shutdown.

  • Any one use an Apple MA034 external modem with PowerbookG4 running Tiger?

any one use an Apple MA034 external modem with PowerbookG4 running Tiger?

Not too common with G4 PowerBooks as they have an internal modem. I can't find Apple's sepcs but a third-party ad shows it minimally needs 10.4.3 or higher and a G-series processor. That should work.
However, the Apple version is expensive used. I googled Apple MA034 external modem and found an Amazon page that showed other compatible modems that were much cheaper.
