Using 1080 footage in a 4k sequence

Hey everyone. I'm editing r3ds in a 4k sequence, but some of my slow motion footage is 3k, and some of the overlays I'm going to use are only 1080. In the end, I'll most likely be exporting 1080 files for Blu Ray or Vimeo. At most, I might export a 2k version of the film for limited theatrical screenings. The thing is, for the purposes of editing, I've been upscaling the lower resolution footage to fit in the 4k sequence under the assumption that when I export my sequence out at 1080, there won't be any negative impact on the quality of the lower resolution footage, and the higher resolution footage will still look pretty good. Does anybody know in reality if there are any potential problems with this approach? Actual experience would be awesome, as opposed to a theoretical viewpoint, but that'd be helpful too. Thanks!

    I cut a 1080p sequence using 4k footage that I scaled down in the Effect Controls window. If I export that sequence as a 4k file, will Premiere compress that original 4k footage to 1080p, then expand it back to 4k in the exported file (please say no)? Or is Premiere intelligent enough to interpret the export scaling using the size of original footage, rather than the sequence size? (Hope that makes sense)
    Of course it's wise to create a sequence based on your delivery requirements, but sometimes clients change their mind and I don't feel like rescaling every damn clip. But thanks for the advice

    Premiere will export to the settings of the timeline / sequence you've created.  It doesn't matter what formats you've used withing that timeline.  So if you use 4k in a 2k sequence, Premiere sees it as a 2k sequence and, without user intervention, will export at that format.
    Obviously you can up-scale during export but i) why would you want to do that when you've previously down-scaled and ii) anything above 100% magnification will begin to pixelate.

    I have Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. I have a project which will be output as SD. I wanted to see if it is possible to import HD footage in such a way that I can have a large image which I can create a move across (as opposed to the loss of quality I would incur from simply blowing up SD footage). Can this be done by simply capturing and editing the HD footage into an SD sequence and then resizing the footage or is there a clever way of automatically opening the HD footage in the sequence in such a way that only an SD sized portion (720 lines by 576) of the HD (1440lines by 1080) is on screen. I am worried that if I simply edit the HD footage onto an SD timeline, Final cut will simply reduce the line resolution to SD and any resizing will be like blowing up native SD footage. Anyone done this?

    So long as you remove the scaling adjustments that FCP will make after you drop an HD clip into an SD timeline, you should be fine.
    Because it's typically what users want, when you drop in an HD clip, FCP will letterbox and/or scale down, but resolution in the clip itself is not thrown out. So, if you need to scale back up to 100% (basically) do pan & scan maneuvers, you won't lose quality. (Just don't go over 100% for the clip's scale)
    FCP +does not+ downsample or convert an HD clip into SD just because the Timeline is set that way.

    I've got a goofy combination of ideas & aspects here...
    The finished product is to be 4x3 NTSC DV... but is to be letterboxed onscreen (the client is trying to match the look of some other piece.) While shooting, rather than taping off the monitor to show where the letterboxing would crop the 720x486 image, we switched the camera (Sony DVCPro25) and monitor into 16x9 mode. That way the client could see exactly how the letterboxing would look on an SD monitor as we shot it.
    Now...
    I'll be capturing the footage from a DVCPro deck via Firewire. What capture preset should I use in order to have the image retain its 16x9 aspect without having to manually scale it down to look letterboxed in a 4x3 DV NTSC sequence?

    You probably mean DVCAM (since DVCPro is Panasonic).

    Capture it as DV25 Anamorphic, and when you drop it in your 4:3 sequence, it will auto-size to fit.

  • Raid 0 for media or previews? Using DSLR footage with Avid codec Sequence for smart rendering

    I am on a PC currently  using raid0 for media (4x 7200rp drives, read/write at 600) and exporting (no previews) to my sas 15k rpm (read/write about 180) previews/render drive.
    I want to use avid codec for my sequence settings, will be doing smart rendering and exporting preview files for quicker exports.
    My question, should I export to my raid0 since I will be exporting previews?  Or is it better to keep the same setup and just add an export drive?

    Either would work but since the Media array is so much faster than the Render drive, the export times probably wont change much exporting to the Render drive.

  • Using 1080 in 720 Sequence  hurts RT

    I often shoot in 1920x1080 and then edit in 1280x720.  Because I do a number of 'interview' projects that only need to be deliverd in 720, this allows me a 40-50% upscal on my interviews (basically a closeup and medium shot without having to change the camera during shooting)  In FCP I never had any RT (real time playback) issues doing this.  I have found in CS5.5 that when I do this, every single clip needs to render because it's being scaled.  If I do a second layer for b-roll it gets worse.  (note, just dropping in the single clip gives me a red bar and if I place a b-roll clip on track 2 over the interview, it stutters and pauses).
    Here's my question.  I am working on the following system:
    MacPro 4,1 (2009)
    OS  10.6.7
    2x 2.26 GHz Quad Intel
    20GB Ram
    GeForce GT120
    System & Software on Internal 7200 Drive #1
    Media on Internal 7200 Drive #2 (not a raid)
    Project on Inernal 7200 Drive #3
    Is there anything I can do short of a complete new system that will improve the RT performance of using 1080 footage in a 720 sequence? 
    While I know any of the following will help a system, will any of the following alleviate this problem.  If so which one and how much (or what recommended product) for each?
    -Seutp Raid0 ?
    -Faster Graphics Card?
    -More Ram?
    Is there mac system that will make this work without having to render every clip? 
    Will Premiere Pro Next address this issue?

  • Basic FCP Sequence Settings question for 1080 footage w/ 7D

    OK. So maybe it's the fact I've been working for 18 hours straight and my mind is partially play-dough, but I'm thoroughly confused right now by what I think may be the dumbest question ever.
    Anyway... here's my problem and my workflow.
    PROBLEM:
    Stupid black box above and below my 1080 footage after I export to QT out of FCP (this box never existed in my 720 footage)
    WORKFLOW:
    - I have 1080/30p footage from a Canon 7D and Rebel T2i
    - Converted to Prores 422 in MPEG Streamclip (I can never keep the file system intact to use the FCP EOS plugin. I need to work on that)
    - Imported into FCP7
    1080 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1920x1080 HDTV 1080 (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV1080p30 (Also tried ProRes)
    Quality: 100 percent
    After I export to Quicktime with current settings, the video plays back with a small black bar above and below the footage. Weird. This seems kind of normal to me, except these bars never existed when I edited in 720. Not that it looks bad, I'm just confused why the bars are there when they weren't there in 720.
    720 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1280x720 HDTV 720p (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV 720p30
    Quality: 100 percent
    When I export this, no black bars above and below.
    So why -- If my settings are basically the same except for the 1080/720 substitution -- do I get the above/below black boxes for 1080 and I don't get them for 720?
    I don't think I want the box. Don't like the box. The box is bad. I think.

    I'll send my thanks over here, too, Shane. Posting on multiple sites because project is due today.
    Hopefully this will be a lesson learned and my sequence settings are point-on from here on out.
    If anyone else is reading this and has a similar problem, though, Shane came up with the solution:
    "Highlight all the footage you pasted...then right-click and choose REMOVE ATTRIBUTES. Then check BASIC MOTION." After checking basic motion, you also have to check distort.
    And if the quicktime inspector doesn't read out 1920x1080, don't worry about it and just trust FCP.

  • Having Issues Keeping My Footage from matching the Sequence

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a weird question. I am trying to bring my 1920x1080 footage into a 1080x1440 custom sequence. Premiere keeps preserving my footage at 100% but is scaling the footage down to fit the 1080 width. I want the wrong aspect ratio and I do not want Premiere to scale down my footage. This happens as well when you bring a 1920x1080 footage into a 1280x720 sequence. It scales down the footage. I want to preserve the large aspect ratio and move it around in the program window. does anyone know haw to prevent this. The only way I have found is to bring a sequence into a sequence and preserve the existing settings, but then I can not see my wave forms in the audio.
    I need a preserved 1920x1080 footage to fit "oversized" in a 1080x1440 timeline. I do not want Premiere to assume I want it perfectly fitted within it, leaving black bars on the top and bottom.  HELP!

    I have never seen PPRO automatically scale source footage to match sequence setting ...unless one has checked the options to do so.

    I am shooting with the Sony HXR NX5, and i would like to ask what timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format? I do not see any format in the Final Cut Pro and in Motion that matches my camera format.

    IF you are working with FCP 7.0.3 (the last version) then you use Log and Transfer to ingest your footage from that camera, and Log and Transfer will convert the AVCHD camera files to ProRes.
    Once the camera files are ingested, make a new (empty) timeline, and either drag a source clip or edit it to that timeline and you will be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source clip. Say yes and you should be good to go.
    AVCHD, H.264,etc. files are not directly usable in FCP without conversion.

    Sometimes I work with HD footage but need to use some old archives (all PAL SD + 4/3)  too. What should I do to keep the maximum quality possible from the SD footage? Clear that they are much smaller in size and scaling it to much bigger sizes would cause serious losses. What's the best way to use SD 4/3 footage in an HD sequence (16/9 or higher)?

    Another approach could be to use Neat Video - best noise reduction for digital video to reduce the noise and Red Giant - Products - Instant 4K 1.5.1 to increase the scale of the SD material.
    Be creative with that. Here is an example of old 8mm film (from 1961), digitized to SD and upscaled to 960 x 720 for inclusion in a HD project:

    Hey guys,
    I'm new here and have looked around on the forums and FAQ's for answers but have turned up with nothing.
    Basically I have filmed footage in 1080p with a Canon 5d mkII and also 720p footage with two GoPro's.
    I want to export a 720p video using both of these resolutions.
    What I had planned was downsizing the 1080p footage (already in the sequence) to 720p to match the rest of the footage and can't seem to work out how to do it!
    My current attempts have the 720p footage come up as a smaller  'box' in the final clip, where you can still see the 1080p footage below  it.
    In other words, the 1080p footage isn't downsizing, and is staying at 1080p.
    If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated!

    It looks exactly the same quality, just compressed!
    That's rather a contradiction in terms.  Most compression types aren't lossless, and certainly the options from Handbrake aren't, which means some level of degredation will be introduced in the process.  It's not good advice to convert already heavilly comrpessed footage for editing, unless you're converting to a lossless format.

    I have spent hours on this and have one final question I still can't answer--Do I use a 30fps or 29.97 sequence?
    Trying to use iPhone 4 footage 1280x720(p I think) in FCP 6.0.6 OS 10.6.5 Mac Pro 6 core.
    The sequence settings I made 1280x720 30p 48kHz.
    I had been trying to use Compressor to convert the H.264 original footage and it always gave me a red line over the audio even when it asked me to convert the sequence to match (I thought I had matched them) and I said yes. Finally figured out had to change the audio to Linear PCM 48kHz at 16 (and not use the default Apple lossless). Finally no red line. I noticed the fps is 30.
    Also found this link where Meg the Dog said to use mpeg streamclip:

    I notice this changes it to 29.97 fps.
    In A/V settings for ProRes 1280x720 the only setting I see is for 30p.
    My understanding is when I drag this 30fps footage in whatever sequence I choose it will be changed to whatever I drag in, so in this mpeg streamclip case it is 29.97.
    So for iPhone4 footage, do I need to use 30 or 29.97 fps or does it matter?

    If you are having more than one condition tables i.e accesss in your access sequence and if you put exclusion indicator in any of the starting tables then system wont search further as it stops searching.
    Ex : say you are having condition tables 501, 502,503
    and you have put exclusion indicator at 502 . then system will start searching from 501 then next it goes to 502 and it stops there and it wont search further.as you have put exclusion indicator at 502.
    But if you have put exclusion indicator to all accesss i.e., conditon tables then system will search from the 1st access and stops at the last access and if any valid condition record is not found in the last record then the system will take the previous conditon table record

    I usually edit 1080i footage so I have my FCP sequence settings set up accordingly, but when a friend asked me to edit a tape of 720x480 footage I forgot to change the settings. Now I am almost done editing and need to figure out how to properly paste the 720x480 footage from the 1080i sequence onto a new 720x480 sequence. I need to do this so I can export as a 720x480 qt.
    I say properly because I already tried it but on the new 720x480 sequence the image now looks really stretched out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    Well there really is not any attributes to remove because I did not make any changes to the clips myself, but for the sake of solving this issue I also tried checking all the attributes and then individually as well.
