Using 2 Identical SuperDrives with DVDSP in Mac Pro

Hello-
I recently installed 2 new identical Pioneer 118 Superdrives in my 2006 Mac Pro. In DVDSP, I'm having problems selecting a drive and burning discs. The Burn dialog box allows me to select either drive, but both have identical names. When the top one in the list is selected, sometimes the bottom tray will open; when I try to burn a disc there, it takes a long time for the burn to begin, and sometimes it will hang before finishing. I'm not sure if the Mac is having a tough time figuring out which drive is which because of the identical names.
I have both drives installed correctly, with Cable Select chosen on both. I wonder if there is way, anywhere, to rename the drives, or if this is the problem. The drives both read any kind of disc without problems, and I have burned discs on both, so they do work. I can also create disc images, which I can then burn in disc utility.
It just seems like DVDSP gets confused because the drives are identical. Should I get a different model or brand of drive to replace one, or is there another way to straighten this out?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks for the response; I've been trying a few things today, and they seem to be working now. Both drives show up in DVDSP with identical names; when I select the upper name, the lower tray opens, and I can burn the disc. Selecting the lower name results in the upper tray opening, and again I can successfully burn.
In Toast, both names also appear and I can burn to both drives (haven't tried two discs at once, yet), although the names/trays are correctly oriented in Toast.
What I do notice is that these drives (New Pioneer 118s) take an extra minute or so before burning begins (in DVDSP only, so again, this might be a name recognition issue), and are noisier while burning.
I wonder if switching to the master/slave setup would improve anything.

Do you think its possible to get Mountain Lion working with this computer or am I much better off upgrading completely to a new Mac,
    Really appreciate all help,

You have the original Mac Pro. Just look at your chart for the production line dats and when yours was produced. It is not an early 2008 Mac Pro.

  • Trying to use ATV wirelessly with a wired Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro that is connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme via a 16 place switch. The AX controls the IP addressing. I also just purchased an ATV to hook up to my HDTV. I attached it and booted up the ATV, it went through the start-up process and I was able to stream movie previews easily. The problem is that it is not seen by the Mac Pro. The ATV has the latest update as does the Mac Pro. Failure of iTunes to see the ATV or vise versa seems to be a consistent problem.
To complicate the problem, I have an Airport Express in another part of the house to stream audio, a Belkin wireless bridge as a print server to 2 ethernet printers, and another Belkin wireless bridge to the same Sony TV for updates.
I am at a total loss as to why they cannot see each other. Is the fact that the Mac Pro wired to the network and the ATV wireless a problem? Everything else seems to work from wired to wireless. Any help is appreciated!

Finally got it to show up in the devices bar last night. It would not show up at all unless I have the ATV on the sync screen. Just sitting there by the TV was not good enough for the two to recognize each other. I found this out by accident while sitting on the couch fumbling with my laptop and playing with the menus. While changing settings and menus, the ATV appeared suddenly when I went back to the sync screen. When I went to the desktop with the ATV still on the sync screen, it appeared. Now everything works well. I just wish that the internal storage drive was larger since my iTunes library is >132GB by itself. That doesn't give much extra room!! Thanks all.

  • How to use hard drives with the new mac pro

A few quick questions about upgrading to new Mac pro desktop
I currently have 4 internal hard drives for a total of 8T
What will the solution be to add storage to the new desktop?
I assume it will be thunderbolt options?
Lets say I wanted at least 8TB of storage to add to the computer
and attached the storage via thunderbolt will it be as fast data throughput
as the harddrives in my current computer hooked up to the external bus?
I also have a pci card running my audio plugins for Universal Audio how will those pci
cards work on the new mac pro?

Also will the transfer rate with the pegas be as fast as if the drives were connected to the bus in the machines like the old mac pro?
To answer that, think of this as a Bottleneck problem. The overall performance is as slow as the slowest device.
At this writing typical rotating drives can produce a momentary burst at 125 MBytes/sec or 1,000 Mbits/sec. Only FireWire 800 is starting to be a limit for that -- EVERYTHING else is faster. Thunderbolt-1 is 10,000 Mbits/sec -- ten times faster.
The best SSD can produce a burst at maybe 800 MBytes/sec or 6,400 Mbits/sec. There is not a big speed difference in an SSD RAID, because the latency is already low. But the 10,000 Mbits/sec of ThunderBolt-1 is still plenty fast enough for that as well.
If ThunderBolt-2 devices really can run a single data stream at 20,000 Mbits/sec, that does not make ANYTHING faster -- it just moves the ceiling (potential bottleneck) a bit farther away.

  • How can i use 3(or more) hdmi monitors with the new Mac Pro(2013)?

I've been looking around, trying to find a solution to this problem.
I saw at one place that an active thunderbold -> DVI will work with the older mac pro model.
Will this work with the new one as well?
Will i be able to connect 3 screens if i use 2 passive thunderbold->hdmi and one
    active thunderbold->dvi and then a dvi->hdmi?

If you need to buy Apple's $99 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapters you may find you need to return and replace the adapter/s till you find one that works.
Recently, after my nMP arrived I bought two adapters. It took 3 trips to the Apple store to find a second one that worked properly. This also happened a few months ago when I was buying those adapters.
You should be aware that you'll also need the DVI cable that has the full set of pins, not the one with the row in the middle missing.
If you check on the Apple customer reviews in the online store you'lll find the issues and possible solutions to this situation.
Eventually I returned the second adapter when I found a way to get 2560 x 1600 through the HDMI port. I now have two 30" monitors that display 2560 x 1600.

  • Using Logic 7.2 on a Mac Pro with Protools 7.2.1 and Mac OS 10.4.7

I am researching purchasing a New Protools/Logic System
Seems the version of Protools to use with the new Mac Pros is 7.2.1, which only recently came out to work with the new "Mac Pros" Digidesign has stated thhat it works with and Mac OS 10.4.7
The latest version of Logic is 7.2 which has been out for a while....hmmm
Is anybody using Logic 7.2 on a New Mac Pro with Protools 7.2.1 and Mac OS 10.4.7, and does it work?

Logic Pro 7.2.2 is not compatible with DAE/TDM on a Mac Pro INTEL.
You will see only "CoreAudio" as available choice, when trying to engage your audio hardware.
We have to wait for any announcements in this regard, maybe at AES or DigiDays in San Francisco.

  • I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and have been trying to back it up on my Time Capsule for the first time.  However, it says there is no available disk space. This time capsule was used with my old Mac Pro that had a Home vault open on it.

The time capsule was used with my prior Mac Pro laptop that unfortunately had the home vault active on it.
My new Mac Book Pro does not have home vault open.  But I am unable to back up my new MAC pro laptop because it says there is not enough storage space available.  Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
When I go into the time capsule - it shows me NOTHING as being in the backup datas.  So, I don't know where to begin to delete all the old data off the
time Capsule and start with a completely empty machine.

Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

  • What should I format my wd external hard drive to to use with my new Mac Pro?

What format should my wd external hard drive be in order to use with my new Mac Pro?

If you're going to use it only with Macs, use Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's the fastest filesystem to use on Macs.
If you're going to use it with PCs and Macs, use exFAT or FAT. I recommend exFAT because it hasn't got limitations as FAT and it's faster, but you need Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later to use it on PCs

  • How can I use an SSD in a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 2.66Ghz

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to work out how to use my new SSD in an old 2006 MacPro. Bear with me, I'm not an expert and trying to work out what is best for me.
I recently bought a 1TB Samsung SSD 840EVO to use in my old Mac Pro, not to use as my main machine, but as a network slave to save RAM with sound sample libraries.
I also got an Apricorn SATA III Velocity Solo x2 - Extreme Performance SSD Upgrade Kit to get high speeds
    http://www.apricorn.com/products/desktop-ssd-hdd-upgrade-kits/vel-solox2.html?gc lid=CLOi46bvqMICFVGCMgodPG8AdA
After installing the HD using the SATAIII connector in a PCIe slot, I did a hard drive test and realised I could only get about 160mbps, not 300-500mpbs which I think the SSD should run at. I had my friend test it on his machine too, and we realised the problem is the "Link Width" which says "x1" and not "x4" or something, so that the speed isn't running at full speed.
    So apparently it's not compatable.
Apparently what I CAN do is install it in a regular Hard Drive bay with a sled, which will be SATA II ... will that work?
    I think I can use this: http://www.amazon.com/Mac-Pro-2006-2008-Sled-Drives/dp/B00AN55034
Anyway - is this what I should be doing to get the fastest available connection?
Any advice would be great- thanks!!!

SATA II is generally just fine, no fuss no muss, for the system. Using PCIe to boot adds problems and most if not all such PCIe SSD cards do NOT WORK in 32-bit Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 (and the 3,1 is also sometimes difficult with some cards).
Data uses though are useful, work, and benefit. Lightroom, Aperture, scratch, even iPhoto - all those graphic libraries.
I would rewrite and make it "will the native SATA II drive bays" work, and the answer to that is YES. But not faster.
You have a 4x and 8x slot, so one of those is fine.
It is the reads and zero latency seeks along with queue depth and high 90K IOs per sec that help an SSD shine.
Putting a 250GB or 500GB EVO 840 is the easiest and best return on system improvement you can make for $120-240 (plus $14 for Icy Dock adapter).
Even the 2008 has two 4x PCIe 1.1 slots. The 2009 has PCIe 4x 2.1 slots that share bandwidth and cap out (only learned from stripping SSDs using two PCIe cards and 2-4 SSDs), so they aren't perfect either! ONLY the 5,1 really has the best PCIe design and setup.
Sonnet only supports or recommends their Tempo Pro which is what I bought, so I don't know off hand how well yours works and if it even will. Some cards do require EFI 64-bit, AND 10.8.x or later, and maybe even PCIe 2.0 - but only to work, ie they don't work or not supported in PCIe 1.0... but NOT about the bandwidth.
Booting in 10 seconds is nice. Launching a full dozen apps in 10 seconds (and ready to use) also. Only larger program suites takes 20 seconds now.
250MB/sec is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to boot drive SSD.

  • Can you use a VGA monitor on the Mac Pro model?

I'm considering getting a new Mac Pro to replace my beloved PowerMac G4 MDD. I have a ViewSonic Graphics Series 19" CRT monitor (VGA) that I use as a palette monitor, with a 19" SyncMaster LED as my main monitor (DVI). My PowerMac's video card has both DVI and VGA ports.
Will I be able to use my VGA monitor with the basic Mac Pro (MB871LL/A)? Will a DVI/VGA video port adapter work, and if so, will it work well? Thanks.

I had two 19" Viewsonic WS monitors hooked up to my X1900XT on my MacPro and it worked just fine with the VGA/DVI adapters (I got the small 2" white adapters that don't have any "cord" in the middle. I swapped them out for two 22" WS Acer monitors and now use the DVI inputs and I am still happy.

  • Using external SuperDrive with 2011 Mini

    Hi,
I have one of the new Mac Minis which comes without an optical drive. however, I do have a USB SuperDrive which I bought for my 2010 MacBook Air. If I plug the drive into the Mini and then insert a prerecorded or blank disk, it is recognised perfectly. Blank disks open the Remote Disc folder (wherever that is), but I can't drop files into the folder for burning. If I try, I get a pop-up message 'The item FILENAME can't be moved because "Remote Disc" can't be modified.' The Remote Disc icon also doesn't have a burn button
On my Air, using the SuperDrive with a blank disk, Finder allows me to drop files into a folder and to press the Burn button to finalise the disk.
So does anyone know if I can get the Mac Mini to treat the SuperDrive in the same way as the Air? Or is there some way of setting up the Remote Disc to use the SuperDrive?
I can write the files using Toast, but I'd prefer to use Finder wherever possible.
    Many thanks,
    Mike.

i have a dell monitor also. 1901fp is the model number. it uses the dvi-d single link connector. i'm having problems finding a miniport to dvi-d single link connector. any suggestions?
or do i have to find an adapter to adapt the single link to dual link first?
i should have know this wasn't going to be easy!
    thanks,

  • Static with external iSight & Mac Pro

I've got an external iSight that works fine with my ibook G4 but produces annoying static or noise when I use it with my new Mac Pro. The picture has a closely spaced series of white horizontal lines down the right hand side. You can see a screencapture here:

Has anybody else seen this? Does anyone have any solutions?

The camera is connected directly - the computer is a Mac Pro though, not a macbook.
I've since tried it on another G4 based mac and the camera is fine there, as well as on another intel based machine which gives the same sort of noise in the picture.

  • Were there graphics card problems with the 2006 Mac Pros?

I'm curious about the ATI 2600 graphics card issues occuring with the new Mac Pro's using Leopard...
Did this just start occuring or were people also having problems with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards on the 2006 Mac Pro's while running Tiger?
The reason I'm asking is my Dual 867 has finally given up the ghost and needs to be replaced and I have the opportunity to buy a new 2 Dual-Core 2.66GHZ Mac Pro with Tiger loaded in lieu of the newer, problem ridden models.
    Thanks for your responses.

the 7300 has had no widespread problems.
