Using 2 ipads with one computer

I am using an ipad 3, and have it synched with an iMac running Mountain Lion.  I need to set up a 2nd ipad with different content.  Will I be able to synch more than one iPad via iTunes?  If so , are there any considerations involved, such as the version of iPad?
Thanks

I sync two iPads and an iPod Touch to the same iTunes library on my MacBook and have different and unique content on each device. You need to set up your sync preferences for each device the way that you want them to be. Assuming that you are using the latest version of iTunes - iTunes 11...

iTunes will remember the sync settings for each device, but you will want to give each iPad a different name. You can do that right on the iPad in Settings>General>About>Name.

When we purchased a new car last year it came with an iPod tether. I decided to give it a try and purchased an iPod for it.   I was so impressed that I decided to do away with my collection of 300+ CD's, 400+ vinyl records, and 100+ cassette tapes.  It took me ssix months to transfer everything to iTunes (the vinyl was especially slow, and I had to purchase an interface preamp to facilitate the process).  I next began collecting iPods - one for each of our three cars (two of which had to have tethers installed), and one for each room where we wanted to listen to music (for this we purchased several iLIVE iPod docks).  I then began transfering my music collection from my computer to the iPods.  At this point I ran into problems with syncing, resetting, and generally uncooperative iPods.  When I noticed that iTunes insisted on calling all my iPods by the same name, when I had named them separately, I began to worry, and tried to contact Apple to ask what might be happening.  Unfortunately, my last purchase was six months and a week ago, and Apple no longer wants to talk to me.
Today I began checking this forum and found the article about multiple iPods on one computer.  So ... I have to make six copies of my library, remember which library goes with which iPod, and remember to switch to the appropriate library before syncing.  Whatever happened to that "Apple makes it easy" attitude?

Not a problem since each device is distinguished by a unique name and has its own sync settings for apps, music, photos, etc.

  • Using an iPad with no computer

    Hello all,
I'm seriously considering selling my MacBook Pro and buying an iPad 2 tomorrow.  I currently have a MacBook Pro and iPhone 4S, but I'm quickly realizing I no longer have any real need to keep the MBP.  On top of that, I have to travel frequently and extensively, and I believe the iPad will be far more convenient for my lifestyle.
My question is, assuming I no longer have access to a computer, will the Cloud take care of all of my backups and syncing needs? Before you had to connect your iPhone and iPad to a computer, but my understanding is that the Cloud now takes care of that for you, thus removing any need to connect the mobile devices to a computer.  Is this true?
    Thanks!

In that case, it should be possible. I haven't tried this directly, but I believe it should work.
You'll need to get an actual AirPrint compatible Printer.
Check here for a list of Printers you can choose from.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
Once you have the compatible printer, using the Hotspot feature from the iPhone he'll have to create the Wifi bubble form the iPhone, and connect the Printer to that Wifi network.
Then connect the iPad to that same Wifi network provided by the iPhone. When all that is done, the printer should appear in any of the Apps that can Print under the Action Arrow button.
For instance in email, pressing the action arrow should show a Print option. In there the printer should appear.
Alternatively you can simply buy a wireless router and setup the network through there even if there is no internet attached.  Connect the wireless printer to the router network, and connect the iPad or iPhone to that same wifi network to print.

Hi, we don't have two iPhones in the family as yet but as I understand it each device can have separate settings for syncing calendars and contacts. For example my iPhone syncs these over the air with the Exchange server at work so if/when my whife gets an iPhone it would be easy to have hers sync to our computer
To make sure your apps don't inadvertently merge turn off Automatically sync new apps from the apps tab when you connect your device.
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • How can I use two Ipods on one computer.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs

Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Using 2 iPods with one iTunes account.

I share a computer with someone who also has a iPod and we have one version of iTunes downloaded. Although we have seperate user names iTunes seems to autosync what she's put in the library to my iPod and vise-versa. We would love to share some of the files that we pay for, but we certainly don't want to share everything. Is the best option for us to just sync our files manuelly instead of auto-syncing?
    Thanks
