Using 2 Minis with only 1 monitor

I have posted elsewhere about the possibility of using 2 Minis (one PPC and one Intel core duo) with only a single monitor, keyboard and mouse.
I thought that Apple Target Disk Mode would be the answer, but I was reminded here that the remote Mac would only be useable as an external HD, not as a computer.
I am wondering therefore if a KVM switch is what I need, to operate either one Mac or the other. Then I would only use the FW remote control when I needed to transfer files.
Belkin makes one such KVM switch for the Mac mini, exactly the same footprint and finish, but rather pricey. There may be similar devices from other makers, possibly cheaper.
If anyone who used one of these KVM switches could give us some comments it would be much appreciated.

A USB-based KVM switch would be a good way to go.
If your connection to your monitor is digital, rather than VGA, these switches are somewhat expensive.
If you are willing to use VGA, then there are many options available in KVM switches at reasonable prices.
I'd recommend buying from a store with easy return policies, because it can take a few tries to get a model that suits your hardware.
Depending on how you intend to use your secondary Mini, a network remote control program like VNC might be a reasonable alternative to a KVM.
And transferring files through ethernet cable, an alternative to using Target Disk Mode.

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

  • Is anyone using their MB with a separate monitor?

I am wondering if using the MB with a separate monitor causes it to be noisier or hotter. I once tried to use a PB with a separate monitor and it was extremely noisy.

    Hello Bantock,
Your MB should preform without any issue's. I of course suggest that you only use the external monitor when the AC adaptor is plugged in.

The version of Pages is the most useful extra information, it hardly matters what Mac you are using.

The line could possibly be an underline or a paragraph border or a line which is a separate object underneath the rest of the text.
Probably it is a paragraph border.

  • Using my MacBook with an external monitor

    Hi,
I'm currently using my MacBook (Intel Core 2 Duo ,2.4 GHz, Memory: 4 GB, GMA X3100) with an external 19" Dell monitor and I was thinking to buy a 22" but then I started wondering if this computer would handle a 22" monitor.
Will this MacBook handle a 22" monitor? If yes, will I see some slow-downs? In other words will I see a difference in speed with a bigger monitor?
    Thanks a lot!

I use this adapter to come from the MacBook's Mini-DVI port....
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTA4NDU1MTM
....and this cable to connect to the TV via one of the HDMI ports...

...the audio has to be run through an audio cable from the Headphone port on the MacBook....3.5mm mini-jack to RCA...(Mini-DVI port does not carry sound)...
I use a wireless keyboard and mouse to access the TV and MacBook from across the room....just change the input signal to toggle from TV to MacBook...(nice)
Someone else will have to explain any differences between the HDTV's and monitors...

  • Use of MIN with text data

I am not familiar with using MIN with text data as in the sample below and could use some help in deciphering what it is doing. This SELECT statement is taken from a larger CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW statement. The first line of the WHERE clause is making the connection to look at the correct user's information. The section after the first AND is what I am trying to interpret correctly. I have moved into a new position and wasn't around when this view was created. The statement is designed to assign the correct DOMAIN_ID to each user based on values in the elms.elms_dom_lkup table ed. This table consists of 4 columns: DOMAIN_ID, PROC_LVL, LOCATION, AND POSITION. The DOMAIN_ID is the only field that is not nullable. The primary key for the table is a combination of the 4 columns. The section after the first AND matches the PROC_LVL from the ed (lookup table) to the PROCESS_LEVEL in the cd (reference table) and confirms the process level is associated with the users primary position. It then looks for one of three conditions:
    1. process levels match and LOCATION and POSITION are NULL
    2. process levels match and LOCATION matches user's location in a reference table
    3. PROC_LVL is NULL and POSITION matches user's position in a reference table
    (SELECT MIN (domain_id)
    FROM elms.elms_dom_lkup ed, mici.const_dept cd
    WHERE c.constituent_id = cd.constituent_id
    AND ( (ed.proc_lvl = cd.process_level AND cd.pos_level = 1
AND ( (ed.location IS NULL AND ed.position IS NULL)
    OR (LOWER (ed.location) = LOWER (loc.campus))))
    OR (LOWER (ed.position) = LOWER (c.job_desc)
    AND ed.proc_lvl IS NULL))), /*Domain ID*/
My question revolves around the priority on those matches. The ed table is not organized in any manor. The records are in the order they were entered. Does the MIN in the SELECT statement cause the DOMAIN_ID

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum!
If v is a string column (such as a VARCHAR2), then MIN (v) is the first string in collating order (that is, alphabetic order, but with numbers and punctuation symols given particular values in the ordering).
It lookw like the code fragment you posted is a Scalar Sub-Query , that is, a sub-query used where an expression is exprected. For example, in a query like this:
    SELECT  *
    FROM    scott.emp
    WHERE   sal     > 1200
;You can replace the literal 1200 with any kind of numeric expression, even
    SELECT  *
    FROM    scott.emp
    WHERE   sal     > (     --Begin scalar sub-query
                    SELECT  AVG (sal)
                    FROM    scott.emp
                )     -- End scalar sub-query
;You have to be careful that a sclar sub-query produces exactly one column, and either 0 or 1 rows. You'll get a run-time error if the sub-query ever produces 2 or more rows.
People sometimes use MIN in situations like yours when the sub-query might otherwise return 2 or more rows, and either:
    (a) all the non-NULL rows will contain the same domain_id, or
    (b) it doesn't matter which domain_id is used, just so long as it is one that actually exists in the result set.

Rows in a relational table are never in any intrensic order.
It looks like the question got cut off. Does the MIN in the SELECT statement cause the DOMAIN_ID to do what?

I see you corrected your first post.

... My question is does the MIN in the SELECT statement cause the DOMAIN_ID from the first record that meets any of the 3 conditions to be returned?Yes, it makes the sub-0query return the first domain_id ( in alphabetic order ) that meets all the conditions. If there are 1,000 rows that meet all the conditions, the query will ind all 1,000 of them, keeping track iof which one is first in alphabetic order. Remember that
    '127.255.255.0' is less than
'25.0.0.0' in alphabetic order, because '1' is less that '2'.

  • I'm trying to decide whether to buy ipad or cheaper tablet.  What is retina display and what is diff betw ipad and mini with only wifi? What is mini missing?

I'm trying to decide on tablet to buy -- what is the difference between mini and ipad?  What is retinal display?  Why do some have wifi only and some have wifi cellular?  Why would I need cellular?
I keep hearing that apple computers don't pick up viruses like pc (of which I have had my fair share) so that is why I am considering -- but there are some really attractive deals for cheaper tablets.

A simple answer to a loaded question?  Not here!
    1.     For starters, I can't recommend the newest iPad AIr or iPad Mini.  The previous versions worked perfectly though if you want to go the Apple route.  That alone will save you a few bucks.  Best Buy undercuts Apple prices by a few $$ and has bonus sales around this time of year.
    2.   You get what you pay for.  I like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs a lot.  Good hardware and software.  App store has plenty to offer.  You also have size options like you do with Apple.   Since I have the Galaxy S3 phone, the Galaxy tabs are very familiar.  The Surface (smaller one) is big for a tablet, it works great, but is subject to the frailties that plague PCs to some degree.   I don't like the keyboard, but do like the kickstand.   I don't know about the availability of Apps for the Surface, I think it may be a major downside to the device.  The Surface is not cheaper than iPad either.  As for the cheaper Tablets, they will be in the landfill before Apple introduces a new gadget (that's pretty often....)   The Kindle is still primarily, an eReader.
    3.   Wifi or wifi and cellular - If you have a smart phone and can tether a tablet, you don't need cellular on the tablet.  With more places offering free hot spots, wifi is more than adequate. ( I use very little cellular on my mini)
    4.    iTunes and the App store;  I will start by saying I am cheap.  If the App isn't free, it has to be really valuable to me or I won't buy it.  I paid for Pages on my iPad 2 years ago and I bought a password wallet that syncs on all my devices on all platforms.  Aside from that I buy music to add to the CDs I imported to iTunes.  If you don't like iTunes and don't want to use it, keep looking at android tablets.
    5.    ios 7 - Never has Apple made such a big deal and been so poorly prepared to introduce a new ios.  It has devoted Apple heads steamed.  I count myself one and have had no problems with my devices, educated user I hope, or just really lucky.
    6.    I really USE my tablet.  I use it for work, for financial management and communications.  I rarely have to resort to the desktop as almost everything is possible on the iPad.  I love it's portability!  Documents and data flow back and forth with the cloud I never worry about losing anything or finding anything.  Photos download automatically from my Android smart phone with Dropbox App and are instantly available to load on all devices.
    7.    If you are a big PC hacker type, the switch to ios is culture shock.  The first time on the new iMac I was at my wits end trying to navigate.  I only had to stop working so hard and it all fell into place.
    My personal experience:
I have the iPad 2, (wifi only) and the first mini (with 4G LTE) and I had a 4th generation iPod touch and now have a 5th Gen iPod touch (which I really like a lot).  My son has an iPhone 4S and the iPad with retina display.  Both my sons have had iPods through the years.
My 50 year old eyes prefer the bigger screen of iPad 2 and typing is much easier.  But I love the portability of the smaller tablet, so one for home, one for the road.  Thanks to iCloud what ever is on one is also on the other, documents, data, contacts, etc.   Retina display, my son has it, I don't, I can't say I miss it.  It does make pictures look better, if you are a photo person, the retina display is worth it.
I also have transitioned from PC to Apple completely, I bought an iMac 4 years ago and it is as fast as it was on day one, no crashes, repairs, viruses.  I just bought a Mac Mini and I also use Apple Airport extreme for router and I have an Apple TV (the only disappointment, I prefer the Roku 2)
I'm sure that was more than you asked for.....

  • Using a mini with two laptops

i'm having problems using my mini ipod with a second computer. i used the copypad software to make a copy of my itunes library on the second laptop, and i can play music from the second laptop ok. at this point i want to make this second laptop the main computer i use; what settings do i need to change to be able to connect the mini to the second laptop and have it updated with all songs?
i tried connecting the mini to the secnd laptop but it only updated a handful of songs, not the whole library even though all songs in the library had a check mark.
    thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you want to make that computer the iPod's Home computer, then you would have to automatically update with that computer.
However, if you ever want to add songs from the first computer, you will need to manualy update.
This will delete all the songs on your iPod and replace them with what is on your laptop. (Which should be evertyhing).
Connect the iPod to the computer. When it appears in iTunes, go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab. Make sure it is set to automatically update all songs and playlists. Click OK.

  • Using iPod Mini with Mac and PC

Has anyone had any experience switching back and forth between a Mac and a PC with the iPod? I've only used a Mac with my iPod Mini, but I will be taking a business trip and will be taking my PC laptop. I'd like to be able to recharge the iPod battery and access the playlists located on the PC while traveling, but when the iPod was connected to the laptop, I got a message stating that the iPod would need to be reformatted--something I hadn't thought about before. I didn't reformat it, because I wanted to check to see if anyone had any experiences with problems due to back and forth reformatting. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for the info! I wasn't aware of that.

  • Can I use ipad mini with cellular without SIM card

I have purchased a ipad mini with wifi and cellular, thinking I could use my UK SIM card when required but leave it out when not in the UK. (Live in Qatar)
I can't activate imessage or facetime, and also I didn't realise it needs a nano sim not my micro sim. I get a cannot connect to network message.
Do I need to purchase a new sim for the ipad to work properly, I did assume it would work the same as an wifi only ipad if sim wasn't present.
    Thanks

Thanks James. I was hoping that was the case.
I've already updated the software, from a quick search that seems to be the network issue for imessage/FaceTime. Is there a fix for this? Ive no back up to go back to.

  • How can I migrate data to new Mac Pro with only 1 monitor

I am ready to set up my new Mac Pro.  I know how to migrate my files from my G5 using Firewire and making the new computer a target disk.  My problem is, I have only 1 monitor.  Is there an easy way around this, OR of not, can I use my Macbook Pro just a monitor and if so how?

If you make the new computer a FireWire Hard drive, the only thing on its monitor will be the firewire symbol. You don't need a monitor to see that.
But if you did, you could start the new computer up first, look at the firewire symbol, get a warm fuzzy feeling, disconnect the  monitor and plug it into the old computer to make the transfers.

I intend to use the mac mini with a 26" HD LCD TV
with a resolition of 1366 * 768. Can anyone tell me
if this will give a good quality display?
That would depend on the quality of the TV. I am using my mac mini with a Samsung 26 inch HD tv. It works fine at that resolution using the VGA connector on the TV but If I use a DVI to HDMI connection to samsung wont let me use the native resolution which is annoying. So until there is a fix for this I have to use the VGA connection.

  • Can I use Mac Mini with an S-video input?

I'm considering a Mac Mini because I have a young child who is mostly blind, but is at the age where he needs to start learning to use a computer.  I want to go with Apple (I have been PC my whole life) because of the excellent VoiceOver features baked into the OS--- Windows doesn't have anything comparable.
I'd like to wire this thing up to my HDTV, because my child does have some vision and the 52" screen will actually provide useful images to him; but it's a nearly 15 year old HDTV that does not have an HDMI input, just S-Video and RCA plugs.
Is there an acceptable adapter out there that will allow me to use the Mac Mini with S-video or RCA plugs without having to buy a new 50+" TV just for the Mac Mini?

    I found this.

You may be able to find others by more Googling
You will also need a mini-display port to VGA adopter for the Mini. It plugs into the Thunderbolt port on the Mini

Do you have your network operator's (service provider's, carrier's) Internet access point settings defined on your phone? The built-in browser might be using WAP, and Opera Mini and Yahoo! Go might be requiring full Internet access.
