Using 2 routers for only 1 network

Hey,
I am new to this stuff, so please guys explain in terms that will be easy for a novice to understand.
I have a qwest router connected to dsl.  It currently provides a wireless g signal and I have my entire house wired or wirelessly connected to my network( 3 DTV receivers, sony ps3, sony blu ray, laptop, computer, network drive, etc.).  I have a linksys wrt160n that I connected to my network and wanted to just have one network.  Right now it seems that I have part of my house connected to one network and the other part to the other network.  Both routers are connected to each other downstairs and I wanted to use the wrt160n for use (1 as a switch? and 2 a stronger better wireless signal that I can connect with my laptop and other wireless devices in my house). I have 3 directv receivers, sony ps3, and sony blu ray connected via ethernet cables.  I didn't need the powerline adapters this way, I recently finished my basement and ran the ethernet wiring throughout the entire house. So, everything, almost is connected to the one router, I ran out of ports on the back of my router, so I set up the other router and plugged it into the qwest router.  I have 2 wireless signals and 2 networks?  I think that I should be able to use the wrt160n as a switch to the qwest and also use the stronger, better wireless n signal throughout my entire house.  So I wont have my printer wirelessly connected to one network, while I am connected to the other.  This seems like it would be possible, is it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have been monkeying with this for some time and it seems as though it may be an easy fix.
Thanks

If you want to cascade both the router together and want to create the single network then, connect the quest router to the linksys router on the Ethernet port and change the ip address of the linksys router in the range of the quest router.

I am thinking of using my mobile phone as a dial up modem when i am away from home and it uses a data cable to the USB port. is there a way to use the USB port on a Mac as your source for the internet?
    Thanks

  • Using two wireless routers for two separate networks

I have one WRT54G router and a newly purchased E2000 router that replaced the WRT54G . I have one DSL connection coming into the house.
I have the DSL going directly into my main E2000 router which runs my existing wireless home network and it does this wonderfully. My son wanted the older WRT54G router to create his own network where he has it set up for his own purposes so I gave it to him. He has everything set up to where we have two functioning networks that do not conflict which is great however he ran an Ethernet cable from the e2000 to the WRT54G to make this happen. This cable is a problem since it basically is about 50 feet of ugly cable running up my stairs to his room. Is there a way to have the routers still work in tandem as they are now to manage two separate networks but to instead have them connected wirelessly and eliminate the existing wired setup?

You would need a third party firmware like DDWRT to do that (it will void the warranty too)
Or you need a wireless bridge like the WET54G or WAP54G set to bridged mode

  • Using two routers for the same SSID

So here's my story. I have a standard Actiontec router in my basment, connected straight to the coax outlet, and connected by LAN Ethernet to a crappy computer nobody uses. It gives off a WPA2 wifi network, let's call it MyNetwork. For the longest time it's been the only router in the house. The coax outlet is on a splitter, splitting the coax outlet into one wire that goes to the Actiontec modem/router and the other to my TV STB. Recently we installed a new coax outlet on the other side of my house and next to it we have a brand new desktop computer that we use often. It has no wifi so and we can't run an ethernet cable throughout the entire house so we got a new Actiontec modem/router from our neighbor who just moved out. It's the exact same Actiontec device.
What we want to do is make it so that both routers give off signal on the same MyNetwork we have to make it a wider reaching signal, and so that I can connect the new desktop computer to the new router with an ethernet cable. I've read so many guides and they're all so confusing and it's such a mess that I almost completely screwed over my network. it seems like the two routers are completely independent of one another, not even aware of the others' existence. The new router is definitely in range of the old one. I've logged into 192.168.1.1 on the new computer and the new router seems to think it IS the old router (or so I think). It showed me all the same devices that have connected to MyNetwork and such, but then again it's always hard to be certain exactly which device is which. After messing around I must have changed some IP address or something, but it seems that 192.168.1.1 doesn't take me to the Verizon login screen, but 192.168.2.1 does. Can I reset those IP addresses?
And of course, can somone please provide a clean, easy to follow course of action as to how to set up two routers on one network?

I suspect it might be a good idea to step back reconsider your ultimate layout.  Essentially you now have two (or if the STB is also included, three) coax drops connected to the ONT.  It seems that you desire that one of these service the STB, and the other two each service a desktop and a wireless access point.  If this is the case, continue reading.
There is no need to consider the original Actiontec router as the primary router, wireless or otherwise.  Use the new coax location to connect to the primary Actiontec router (you can use either router).  For starters, reset both routers to their factory defaults using the reset switch on the back of each device (for details, do a search).
Once the primary router has been located (or relocated) to the new coax drop, just connect the new desktop there using an Ethernet cable connected to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router.  Then set up your primary wireless network based on this router (once again, do a search on these forums for specifics on setting up a basic wireless home network).
Now use the original coax outlet where the first router was located to set up another access point.  This access point will provide Ethernet connections plus an additional wireless network (if it's still needed).  However you cannot have two wireless devices on a single home network with the same SSID (i.e., network name).  Here are details on some methods to do this:

Take a careful look at these suggestions and references to decide if this is what you want.  Then report back if there are remaining questions.  Good luck.

  • APs using different channels for the same SSID

    Hi,
This might be a stupid question, but I am wondering why my Aironet 1602i and 2602i access points connected to the same controller would use different channels for the same network. Would this be to avoid interference? If so, I am planning to put 9 access points throughout the office and they will be fairly close to each other. Would this increase the risk of interference?
    Thanks,
    Tibet

That is normal. The WLC is determining the best channel and being in different channels is the best. When you add more, the WLC will decide by the use if RRM what channels and power levels to allocate to each AP.

<<  The iTunes Service is available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Service from outside these locations.  >>
    Wrong.
iTunes is available in just about every country in the world. Go to the bottom of the iTunes homepage and you can change to the iTunes for other countries.
The only difference is the content, since some books are not marketed in all countries. And cannot be ordered from other countries in e-format.  I.e. I can buy physical books, DVD , CD from online retailers in other countries (e.g. via Amazon), but cannot buy e-media versions of exactly the same books, films, music from other countries.
Which is the problem that the OP has. The book that they want is marketed on the iTunes USA site, but not on the iTunes India site.

They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

No, I have not chosen photos to share as I assumed that the Apple TV would access all photos and music that are stored on my iMac.

  • Using manual IP address only for specific networks

For my home network I use DHCP with manual address because I have to forward some ports specifically to my computer. However this causes problems when connecting to other networks. For some reason this setting stays active even when using other networks. Therefore, I can't connect to say my school network because the setting has to be set to plain DHCP. Is there a way to use manual IP address only for specific networks?

System Preferences > Network > Locations and add a location for your home with its manual settings. Add a location for other DHCP locations. Then when you want to connect at another DHCP location select that location from your locations dropdown.

  • How do I use Time Capsule for backup only over an existing network (or ethernet)

Ok, first, I have been using Mac now for about 2 years and every little thing I do is much harder than advertised. I have yet to experience the mythical ease of Apple products.
With that said, I was talked into buying this 2TB Time Capsule. Which right now seems to serve nicely as a very expensive paper weight.
Here's what I am trying to do. I was told I could use this as a wireless backup. I have a cable modem and router in my house. I do not want to insert Time Capsule as the router. I would like to either hook it up to the existing network or have it just wireless. Whatever works best for backup use.
I set the time capsule up to connect to an existing network. Which it did. Green light is on.
When I select it as a backup drive in Time Machine, it works. However it does not back up. It will say Waiting to Backup and do nothing. If I select Back Up Now on Time Machine, it says it cannot find the disk.
Is it possibly because I had used another backup disk prior and kept it? When I set the Time Capsule I selected to use both.
I am at a loss. I am not a techie. And there are more options of use than the instructions cover.

The problem is your method of connection I suspect.
The TC was always designed to plug into the main router. It does not have to be in the same room but it has to be ethernet connected.
Please post a few screenshots of the setup.. that makes it so much easier for me to work through it with you.
Posting screenshots here is easy.. press the little camera and select the shot from finder.
What I need is the summary page from your airport utility.. ie this one.
Then click on edit button which I have highlighted and show me the tabs for Internet, Network and wireless. eg this is the internet. (show me the whole thing.. I have cut it off to keep it small).
We can then work through the issues.

  • HT4628 My iMac loses its connection with my home wi-fi network when it goes into "idle" mode.  That is, if I don't use the Mac for a few minutes, it goes to idle, kind of like sleep. The wi-fi connection disappears and the clock upper right stops working.

I think it's a Lion problem.  I had this problem with an old Dell True Mobile wireless router, and hoped it would go away with a new Airport Express router.  Same problem.  I checked online and saw a lot of message boards featuring questions from people that suffered the interruption of their wi-fi connection, some with Macbooks others with iMacs like me.  The problem happens when I don't use the computer for a few minutes. It goes into the Idle mode, kind of like sleep.  The connection is severed and the time clock upper right stops.  It's weird.  There was supposedly an Apple update that addressed this issue, so at the Genius bar two days ago I updated to 10.7.3, downloaded and installed the update. Didn't work.  Is it Lion? Is it a wireless card issue?  Very frustrating.  I subitted a genius bar work authorization with another Apple Genius Bar support tech the next day. He ran some tests. Cryptically said he knew that Apple knew about this and was working on a solution but couldn't tell me what it was. Submitted my info and said I'd be contacted by an Apple tech within 48 hours and provided with a link to another download of another update that should "fix" the problem.  I don't know what to do.

    I FINALLY SOLVED THIS ISSUE!!!!
New routers have "mixed" modes for your network; this means that it will automatically choose the best option between wireless-B, wireless-G and wireless-N network modes. I used to experience this issue using the 2.4 GHz. mixed mode wireless network.
Thankfully, my router can create 2 networks: a 2.4 GHz. network and a 5 GHz. network.
When I randomly changed this value to "use only wireless-B and wireless-G" trying to fix an issue with a wi-fi expander, the iMac wi-fi  issue dissapeared! I tried it with wireless-N only, but it didn't work.
So, finally, I have a 2.4 GHz network with only wireless-B and wireless-G modes which works PERFECT with the iMac, and a 5 GHz. network with a mixed* wireless mode for everything else mode.
*PD: by "mixed" mode it means that the router will automatically choose between B, G and N network modes as it fits better.
