Using 2nd Built-In Ethernet port for internet access?

Hello,
I have a Quad-G5 running 10.4.8. In its current configuration, all its network communications, including web access, go over the active ethernet port (Built-in 1).
Does anyone know how I could use the second built-in port for internet access only? I'd like to route local traffic over the first port, but go "out" over the second.
The machine is on a corporate network, and proxy access is slowwww. I have the ability to use a direct connect to the internet, but still need to be connected locally. Any thoughts? Many thanks . . . JD

Easy. Go to System Preferences > Network > Network Port Configurations and drag the port connected to the internet to the top, so that it has priority over the port connected to your LAN. This prevents DNS time-out when loading a website, but still allows LAN traffic over the other port because that traffic is most likely going to use ARP rather than DNS. For good measure, you can add your company's domain (such as "my_company.lan") to System Preferences > Network > Internal_Ethernet > TCP/IP > Search Domains.

No, you will not be able to use a wired connection. If you have a iPad wifi, it can be used only with a wifi and if you have a iPad wifi+cellular, it can be used with both wifi and 2G/3G and 4G.

  • Is the Ethernet Port for Internet Only??

I have tried to get an answer to a problem I'm having on another forum, without success, so I am asking it here.
I have removed an internal 250Gb disk from my old G4 Tower and bought an enclosure so that I can use it as an external drive. The enclosure came with some software from a company called Ximeta, which I have installed. The enclosure also comes with a USB 2.0 and RJ45 port. With USB ports at a premium when I am working on locatiion I thought it would be easier to connect using the RJ45 port.
The problem is that whenever I attach the device and register it (using the Ximeta application) it will not mount on my desktop. I have checked the Ethernet port and get messages that say that it has an IP address but cannot connect to the internet. The problem is I am connected to the internet via Airport and my wireless lan, so I am not clear about why the Ethernet port would display this message. Surely, the port can be used for any application, not just internet?
Anyway, the result of several days testing and analysis is that I connect the device via USB and it mounts immediately but I cannot get the same result when connecting via Ethernet.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks & regards,

  • Is it possible to use the built-in Ethernet port in the RE1000 to Minimize Decreasing throughput

    Kindly
Is it possible to use the built-in Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) port to extend the network with an Ethernet cable without placing the extender in an area where you still have at signal ?
because i dont want to decrease the wireless through-put by 50 % .
I would like to Expand the network  network by running an Ethernet cable from an RE4200(Basement floor ) router to the end of  the RE1000 built-in Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) port in the second floor..

The Linksys RE1000 Wireless-N Range Extender includes a built-in Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) port, which works as a wireless bridge to instantly connect any wired Ethernet device to your network. To ensure the proper configuration of the range extender, you need to know the wireless settings of your router or access point.  These settings are:
    • SSID
    • Wireless Channel
    • Wireless Security and Network Key
Here is the link for manually configuring a range extender: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=206954591ff54e36884bb4636fcfd3d9_Manually_configur...

  • Using separate ethernet ports for LAN and internet

    Following scenario:
A couple of Lion clients and a Lion server connected to a switch. Switch connected to router for internet access. All devices, clients, server and router are in the same C-Class net.
I'd like to connect the Lion server with 2 ethernet ports to the switch, so that one port is solely used for connections to the Lion clients (aka LAN) and the other port is solely used for connections to the internet. That way heavy LAN traffic to/from the server cannot bog down internet access to the server. Any ideas how to acomplish that?
Usually you would configure the Lion server as a router and connect the Lion clients (via a switch) to one port and the cable modem to the other, so both ports are in different subnets. But I don't want all internet traffic from the clients going through the Lion server.
The best I've come up so far was to configure both ethernet ports with static IP addresses. The one connecting to the clients with a 255.255.255.0 netmask but no router IP given. The one for internet with a 255.255.255.255 netmask and the router IP set to my physical router IP. It seems to work, but I'm not sure, whether this is the suggested way to do such a setup.
Maybe some manual editing of the routing table is are more solid solution?
    Any tips appreciated.
    Pete

What you want to do can be done but maybe not the way you are trying.
First yes, you would use two Etherner ports on the Mac, if it is a Mac Pro or XServe it has two built-in, other Mac models can do this using a USB Ethernet interface.
Next, the way I would normally do this is to have a separate switch for the WAN router, this would make the setup look like the following
LAN Switch ----- Server ------------ Router --- Internet
           | |                             |
           | |                            NAT
           | +-----------------------------+
           |
           +------ Client Devices
The router could be doing NAT via one interface, or a separate Firewall box could do the NAT.
Another possible way would involve segmenting the lan switch by setting up a VLAN and putting one port for the Servers second Ethernet connection on to that VLAN (using public IP addresses and the a connection to the router on that VLAN, the LAN switch could then route between the two VLANs. Cheaper LAN switches do not have this ability.

  • Can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices?

can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices? we have it connected wirelessly but devices connected to the ethernet ports are not working.

Not as an additional router.. the TC will be plugged into the main router via ethernet (or ethernet equivalent)..
Then the TC is setup in bridge mode. It will simply act as a Switch and HDD.
The wireless can be setup in a number of ways.
From your convenience point of view use it in roaming network mode..
you simply give the TC the same Wireless Name as the existing routers SSID.
Same security setting and password. WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES which is the best.
But they both use different wireless channels.. normally if you leave the TC on auto it will work fine, but I prefer to control the network.. so set the main router to say 1 and the TC to 11.
You can also use a completely different wireless name etc.. that is up to you. It is still a single flat network and the only thing that is important is only having one router.

  • Built-In Ethernet port configuration "grayed-out" in "Port Configurations"

Suddenly my "Built-In Ethernet" port configuration isn't clickable in Network Preferences' "Port Configurations" window. It's there but is "grayed-out" and the "On" clickbox won't take a checkmark.
Also, it's not showing up at all in the "Show" pull-down (since it's not clicked probably?).
My hub and modem are fine (i can connect to the internet with my wireless airport-laptop)except the "local network" indicator lamp on the hub where the ethernet cable is plugged doesn't light as it used to.
I recently had to delete some files so maybe that's why?
(Can't retrieve them, sorry! Maybe some names...)
    Thanks much for any help!
here's the inf on my Desktop Mac which is running OS 10.4.9:

well, what wonders an exercise break can bring!
I fixed the problem by looking on a backup disk for any files with the word "ethernet". I had done that on the local disk and didn't find anything of interest. But I did find these 4 files on the backup in a folder sitting directly on that external HD directory titled "System"inside of /library/extensions:
    Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext
    AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext
    AppleBMacEthernet.kext
    AppleGMACEthernet.kext
I copied them into my local HD's system/library/extensions EURIKA! the built-in ethernet has returned and I was immediately on line without any further adjustments.
The options that were missing as per my subject thread are all back.
    Keep this one handy!!!
Thanks again for your help...I'm sure we'd have gotten there soon enough.

  • Using printer's ethernet port as an access point

    Hi there,
I have an HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw wirelessly connected to my network. I also have an HP LaserJet 5P, which was connected to my network / wireless router via an ethernet cable using a D-Link DP-301P+ print server. Don't judge...I love that old dinosaur and I use it exclusively for all black and white printing, and it has an envelope feeder. I moved and it's no longer possible for me to have my router in the same room as my printers.
Is it possible to use the HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw's ethernet port as an access point for the HP LaserJet 5P using the Link DP-301P+?
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,
Sounds very interesting, 3:30AM now (I'm watching FIFA games), I will talk with my Networks guys when they come to work and update later.
    Regards.
Updated: Talking with the Network guy, he said this may noy work and his recommendation: use LAN over power.

  • Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports

Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports
If I plugged both of my ethernet ports into my LAN switch, that would double the bandwidth to and from my machine. A switch does not used shared bandwidth like a hub does. I realize that it won't speed up any of the other devices that are plugged into the switch. Regardless, I would have the capacity for double the bandwidth to my machine.
All LAN cables are CAT6 and the switch is 10/100/1000.
The question is, would Mac OS X 10.4.7 utilize both ports (soft of the way it uses multiple processors)?

It's easy to try... it's call "Link Aggregation"...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304120
You get to it by Network>Show>Network Port Configurations>New then Port in the popup, then you schould see Port Aggregation. Selt the two ports you wish to combine.

    Hello Brad:
First, forget about a virus. There are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
Do you have about 10-15% of the HD free at all times?
Open activity monitor and see what is taking the processor capacity.

  • How many ghz should I get if I plan on using my IPAD2 for internet access, email, facebook and games for my children?

How many ghz should I get if I plan on using my IPad2 for internet access, email, facebook and games for my daughters children?

Ghz is the CPU speed and that is fixed for each iPad model.
The GB is the number of Gigabytes of storage.
I had a 32G iPad1 and filled it up with 5000 songs, 20,000 photos and about 50 apps.  It doesn't sound like you will need anything larger than that.  If you are just talking about a few dozen apps and email, the 16G version should be adequate.

  • Have a static IP for internet access - how do I replace my Linksys wireless router with Time Capsule?

Have 5 macs on an ethernet network - some wired and some wireless to a Linksys router.  My provider uses static IP and DSL for internet access.  I am replacing an existing Linksys router with the Time Capsule.  The Static IP settings I have are IP address, Gateway, Mask, primary DNS and secondary DNS.  The Airport Utility is not as straight forward as the Linksys setup.  There is not a place to list gateway.  Consequently I am unable to connect to the internet and am back on the Linksys router until I get this resolved.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated !

You enter the static public IP address info on the TCP/IP tab within the Airport Utility. For a static address, use Configure IPv4 = Manually. You use the Router field for the Gateway address.

  • User Authentication for Internet access

    Hi,
Is it possible to configure authentication for internal (LAN) users to Authenticate (local/RADIUS/LDAP) for any kind of internet access through the ISA550/570? (like cut-through authentication proxy in ASA.)
And Can the ISA550/570 act as a Web proxy?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Sulu,
You can configure captive portal for internal LAN users to authenticate (local/Radius/LDAP) for internet
access through ISA500. (see attached screenshot)
ISA500 cannot act as a web proxy. what is your use case ?

  • I have to restart ipad each time for internet access.  Why?

I have to restart ipad each time for internet access and some games.  Never happened until about 2 weeks ago.  ?

Firefox is a browser: it doesn't require you to 'sign in'.
It sounds to me like you have some kind of malware installed if you're required to 'sign in' every time you use it.
I'd recommend you use Internet Explorer (''assuming that doesn't require you to 'sign in' too'') to go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download the free version. It will quarantine any malware it finds so restart Firefox afterwards to see whether the problem recurs or not.
