Using 30" Apple Display  as a TV monitor

Hi,
I want to know if I can repalce my old TV for a 30" Apple display, so that I can use it both as a computer monitor and as a TV monitor. Specifically can I connect it to a digital cable service. Will I be able to see HDTV ? If this is possible, how do I do it?

Basically by connecting it to a mac of some description you would be able to use it as a computer monitor, have something fairly similar to tv in front row and with the aid of an eye tv receiver or similar you could watch and record various anologue and digital tv stations.
The problems you are up against is that the 30" display requires a dual DVI output (that's dual in one connecter not two single DVI outputs) I don't think the mac mini is up to it and as far as I know desktops don't do front row, which leaves you with top end laptops.
If you don't already have a computer for the job, it would be far cheaper to go for a new HD TV and tv than a computer just so you can utilise your monitor.

I want to use my apple TV as a second monitor not a mirrored one, in other words, I want to use my TV as a second screen not a copy of my first screen, other people have asked this question but have been given mirroring answers so I am spelling it out here very specifically. I want a second display. This should be possible and would be awesome. Anyone know how to do this?

Nevermind I just installed it to try it and it's awesome, so happy right now, Thanks. All the things I had read about it on third party sites led me to believe it could not do extended desk tops, thanks for your help!

  • Can't use my apple displays with Mac mini

    Hey everyone,
I've got a pretty strange problem, and I'm hoping you guys know of a solution to this.
Thing is, I can't use any apple displays with my Mac mini box. Whenever I try to do so I can see that the monitors are turned on, but the screen is completely black (doesn't flicker or anything like that). I know for a fact that both of the apple monitors I tried work.
However, monitors from other manufacturers work just fine! This has got me baffled, what is it about apple monitors that's got my Mac so confused ?

It's possible the analog VGA is working on your mini whereas the DVI digital output is broken. They are two completely different interfaces that just happen to share a common connector on the mini.
Can you possibly get your hands on another, non-Apple monitor that has a DVI input? I would say if all three are not working (two Apple monitors and a third-party one), then definitely something is up with the mini's DVI output.

  • Can i use an apple display with an ati radeon 9200?

so, i have an old mac (bw g3 w/ g4 upgrade) and an old crt monitor (power computing 17"). the monitor is showing it's age and looks like it has maybe a month left.
i can't afford a new mac right now as much as i would love to get an imac. but i will need a monitor so my question is can i buy/use an apple 20" monitor with my ati radeon 9200 video card?
    thanks

My Mac mini (according to my system profile) has that same graphics card and it runs the monitor just fine, can get a bit choppy with Expose but thats neither here or there.
Im not sure where in the world you live but in the UK a 20" ACD is almost the same money as a 17" iMac, that way you get your dream pc and a nice new Widescreen display.
Hope you enjoy whatever you choose.

  • Use non Apple display

It is possible to use a non Apple display or a regular computer monitor for the older black MacBook?

Any display up to 1920 x 1200 will work. You will need a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter

or a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter

  • Is it possible to use the iMac display as en external monitor?

I want to connect my powerbook up to an iMac using the display as an external monitor for the laptop. Is this even possible? Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hello,
I've seen this post at least a hundred times. Has
anyone actually had the gusto to try this idea?
I don't remember where the page was. But, I posted it's link several months ago in the forums during another discussion.
But, the guy who had done it to his iMac G3 had very poorly documented his conversion.
Basically, he took and wired signal to same signal on the monitor, and adapted his power supply and other items to work properly in the modified setup.
So, it is possible. You just need to sit down with the schematics and wire signal to same signal, and make sure you account for all the variables. It may take some resistors, etc. to get the adaptation just right.
I don't have any reason to do it myself, so I'm not going to tinker with it.
If I remembered the link, I'd post it. But, it wouldn't do much good anyway since his HTML formatting was severely messed-up. The end-result was accurate information that was scrambled around on the screen in such a way that you couldn't decipher it anyway. If he had done the HTML work properly, it would be in a formatted table. But, instead the information was scattered all over the screen in an illogical format. So, it wasn't of much real use.

  • Can i use an cinema display as a second monitor with 27 inch 2011

I am interested in purchasing a 2010 Apple 27 inch Cinema Display monitor. I have a mid 2011 imac 27 inch computer, and am wondering what I will need to connect the Cinema Display to the iMac.
    Thanks

If it's a 27", that would the LED Cinema Display and it uses the same Mini-DisplayPort your iMac has, so all you need to do is plug the monitor into the appropriate ports.
    Regards.

  • Can I use my cinema display as the primary monitor???

I've just cracked the screen on my macbook pro and want to know if it's possible that i could use my 23" apple cinema display as the primary screen, so that when I load up my dock etc will appear on the external monitor rather than the laptop monitor.
Is this possible, and how do i achieve this?
    Cheers,
    Jonny

    I think so.
Click on system preferences, and choose displays.
From here, click on arrangement, and you can choose to have the dock on your external display.
If you don't see the "arrangement" option, be sure you have an external keyboard or mouse attached to the computer, and close its display lid. The computer should go to sleep. After it's asleep, wake it, using the attached mouse or keyboard, but keep the lid closed. The external display should illuminate with your desktop.

  • Want to use 30" Apple display for HD TV... is possible?

Want to get a 30" Apple Moniter to use with G4... iMovie, presentations, etc... and then use as HD TV (we don't watch TV... just DVD's and VCR's.) Do I have to use computer to watch DVD's or can I get a peripheral DVD player/ DVD recorder combination... patch into stereo. Instead of getting a HD LCD TV, would rather get monitor and use for both. Has anyone done this? Is this possible?
    Thanks for any help....

Thanks you guys... ok, so forget the HD TV idea... I like the big monitor... if I used the Gefen player... is there anyway to get a VCR player to run through it to the Monitor. The idea here... is we don't watch broadcast TV... just dvd's and vcr tapes... have a lot of vcr tapes. Is that possible? Any other solutions I'm not aware of? Or should I just get a off the shelf LCD TV from Costco? Thanks for helping me here.

  • "Apple Display Thunderbolt" as TV

Hello guys! I wanted to use an "Apple Display Thunderbolt" as TV. I need an adapter to convert the HDMI signal from the decoder to form Thunderbolt monitor. Does anyone have any idea. just need the video signal, the audio can send to an independent sound system.

Cannot be done.  TB display requires a TB source and there are no converters/adapters available.
Note, even if there were converters/adapters  you coudn't do it due to HDCP (copy preotection).
However look at the Elgato products for TV input to your computer to be displayed on your monitor.  But even there HDCP will get in the way for HD.

  • Sony Vaio for the apple display

I have a sony vaio and an apple display. I want to use the apple display to display what I have on my vaio. Is there any adapter that I can use for the thunderbolt adapter (thunderbolt to firewire) to go towards my vaio (has a firewire port)to display my screen?

then plugged the ac adaptor in the plug socket, then plugged the monitor supply into the ac unit,
    then swtched computer on.

  • Apple Displays Vs. Other Displays

What makes Apple Displays so special that they are so much more expensive than the rest of the monitors out there. I have a three month old Macbook, will I have to use a Apple Display to connect to or will I be able to connect to any monitor out there. I would like to stick with an Apple Display but they are so much more expensive. Just wondering why.

You don't have to use an Apple display for your MacBook. Anything with a DVI or VGA plug will work. although you might need an adapter. I'm not sure which video adapters Apple puts in the box with a MacBook.
It is a misconception that Apple displays are more expensive than anything.
At the low end you have consumer displays, $200-$600. These use lower-grade components and are not particularly color-accurate.
At the high end you have professional color displays, $1500-$5000. This includes the Eizo and better NEC monitors. Color professionals use them because they have larger color ranges and are more precise, especially after running a color calibrator on them. These are superior to Apple displays, but they are also priced accordingly. Most people don't know about the high end of LCDs because you won't find them at Best Buy or CompUSA.
So Apple displays, and their prices, are in the middle. They can give you more professional color quality than the cheapo LCDs, but they won't give you color as good as the true high end. Obviously, if you don't make your living through accurate color, you don't have to care about the high end, or the Apple monitors in the middle. Just get any cheap LCD you can find and plug it in.

  • Mac Pro + 22" Apple Display

Apologies for this as I'm sure it's answered somewhere but I can't find it! I have purchased Mac Pro 8 Core 2.93 and simply wish to know if my existing Apple 22" (old style, horizontal lined casing)flat screen display needs any additional connections to link up with the Mac Pro out of the box. The new mac is standard specification, no additions. Thank you in advance for any advice.
    Tony

If the display uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will need a DVI to ADC adapter.

  • I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board?

As i had said, I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board? Is there a Fn key combo i'm missing or is the issue more serious then i realize? any and all help and hints would be greatly apprichiated, thanks in advance.
    -Powerbook User

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.
EDIT: Yes! Found a pdf of the PB manual it shows F7 is the toggle:

  • Using an external non-Apple display on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion

On Friday I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard and now I am not able to use my 23" Samsung monitor exclusively as my display. I can mirror the MacBook Pro's display, but then my HD monitor's resolution is downgraded.
I used to start-up my MacBook Pro pushing the "On" button and then quickly closing the notebook. When it has started and the display was shown on my Samsung monitor, I opened the MacBook and all would be well. I had the benefit of the full HD resolution of my Samsung monitor, with all the menus and the MacBook's screen would be blank. If I follow the same steps now, the moment I open my MacBook, everything shifts back to the MacBook and the external screen only shows the background picture, with no menus.
I am a photographer and use the large HD-quality screen to see fine detail when I am doing editing. I do not like to work on two screens at the same time, and would prefer it to just keep on working in the same way as previuosly.
Can someone please give me advice on my problem?

This may help but then it may not. I tested it with my iMac and non-Apple second display so results may vary.
With both the MacBook and the second display powered on go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement
Drag the Menu Bar to the second display and then drag the display itself to the other side of the second display. This should allow acces to the dock and Menubar on the non-Apple display and achive your desired results.
Note: If I sleep my iMac the second display stops so you may need to keep your MacBook open to use these settings
    Hope that helps
