Using 32 LCD as montior

Any practical words of wisdom as far as my wanting to use (in my case) a Sharp 32/1080p LCD as ,my monitor? I know many mac mini users hook LCDs of various shapes and sizes as monitors, but these seem to be utilized as media centers and not as primary desktop monitors.
I was going to upgrade my 20" cinema display to 23" since that is the maximum screen monitor the mini will handle because of resolution limitations. But at $749, I figured I give a shot at a nice 32" 720P or better yet 1080P for about the same price point.
I know the resolution won't be up there like the dedicated computer monitors, but feel the size would be a better trade off. The reason I'm "wanting" a screen bigger than 23" is to help me better layout web pages I build while having other screens open in my other programs. I understand that a 32" monitor will probably have to rest at least 3 feet away from me, but I'm not sure the font sizes will be readable. Any experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks, you are right (my bad) I neglected the fact that I can get more resolution from a quality 22 or 24" dedicated computer monitor such as these 2...

with their 1920 X 1200 resolution vs the typical 32" LCD 720p/1080p in at around 1366 X 768 resolutions. Gee, poor me, guess I'll have to sacrafice with a little ole 24" monitor : ). I apologize for the extraneous urls...

  • The MessagePerformanceUtils:totalTime issue in Flex 4 (rpc.swc) using LCDS 3.1 running under JDK1.6

We are facing an issue while using LCDS 3.1 running under JDK1.6 in Sun Solaris v5.10 OS & Adobe Flex 4.
    Scenario :-
    ===================================
As part of our Flex-based client-server application (with Java backend) we have a performance report generation module. Following flex framework class is used to calculate the performance of various layer of a typical server-based request-response cycle.
; (available in rpc.swc library file)
(for example : server time, cairngorm time, UI screen rendering time, UI event generation time etc).
The totalTime was working properly before upgrading the rpc.swc to Flex 4 ; However it broke after migrating to Flex SDK 4; The totalTime is now coming as negative junk value.
As we understand that the above Flex framework class method works in conjunction with LCDS running at server side on JDK.
We suspect that the new rpc.swc taken from Flex SDK 4 is causing the issue !
    System information :
    Web Server : Weblogic 11G
Operating System : Sun Solaris v5.10 OS running on Sparc hardware.
Flex : Adobe Flex sdk 4.0
Flash player : Adobe Flash Player 10
    Browser : Internet Explorer 8
    LCDS : 3.1
    JDK : JDK 1.6.0_14
    ===================================
Has anyone faced similar problem before ? Any help or direction would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rabi
     mx.messaging.messages.MessagePerformanceUtils :totalTime

Nothing has changed in the Flex SDK sources for this class since sometime around 2008. Are you running against the same LCDS server as you were before you updated to Flex 4?  This certainly seems strange (and bad).  Do you see the same behavior with Flex 4.5?  What was the version of Flex you were using before switching to Flex 4.0?
If you can provide the additional information, we will look in to this.  A reproducable case that was a simple mxml application along with a simple destination config would help us narrow the problem.
    Sorry for the problems!

  • Using LCD TV as Display

I have a 12-inch iBook G4, and I wanted to use my LCD screen as my display. I bought a Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter, when I connected it up the picture looked grainy. It looks like it wasn't scaled up just blown up (if you understand that). I can understand this because the computer isn't really sending a digital signal, just a video output signal (i don't think that makes any sense either). Is there any adapter that will make it look just as good as on my computer, or a setting i can change. Thanks in advance!

The problem is the way the iBooks are designed to output a secondary video signal. In most computers, attaching a secondary monitor gives you the option to either mirror your first display (ie, a copy) or extend your desktop (giving you twice the space for, say, icons).
iBooks, on the other hand, only have the ability to mirror. The ability to extend your desktop to the external monitor has been disabled in the firmware. This means that your iBook, essentially, sends the *exact same* video signal to both screens. What you see on your laptop screen is what you get on the LCD. Including resolution.
If I recall correctly, you can scale that image down, but not up. The grainy image your describing is the signal being, as you said, blown up by the monitor itself.
Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about this. There are ways of hacking this problem, but none of them are supported by Apple.

  • Worthwhile using LCD TV as monitor for extensive writing?

    Hi there:
I'm only in the U.S. for 2 months and need to connect my iBookG4 to an external display but am loathe to buy a monitor. I have a View Sonic LCD TV 20" screen and want to know: 1) if it is viable to use the TV as a monitor (the optimum resolution is 640*480); and 2) if so, does a mini VGA to RCA suffice? (the TV only has RCA input). I write for about 8 hours a day so resolution is important.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
    Cheers

    Hi Kina71,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
The adapter and RCA cables will work but the results will be less than satisfactory. The resolution is too low for text. I don't think you could stand it for 8 hours a day. Why don't you look for an inexpensive 17" monitor (even a used one)? You'll need a mini VGA to VGA adapter also ($20 at the Apple Store).

  • Using LCD Tv as main display

I am running my macbook in lid closed mode and have it connected to a 22" LCD tv via a VGA cable, I am using the maximum resolution (1680x1050) and the display is very clear and sharp but is offset to the left. There is a 1" black strip down the right hand side of the display and the far left side is not visible. I have used the horizontal positioning setting on the tv but it does not let me move the image enough. I was wondering if there is anyway to get around this so that my screen is central on the tv ?
    Thanks

Inverting the polarity of horizontal sync might work, but that requires a program like SwtichResX.

  • Using LCD module in Multisim 10

Guys, I'm having trouble using the 20x2 LCD module. I interfaced it with an 8051 MCU module. And, I use the standard busy flag check(RS = 0, R/W = 1, d7 -> busy flag), but there are two problems:
    1)  If the LCD is set to trigger on falling edge, the busy check routine goes on an infinite loop,I placed an oscilloscope at d7 and En. Each time there is a falling edge at En, the busy flag (d7) goes to zero(not busy) and immediately comes back to one (busy). This is the case always.
Is this because there is some other setting to be changed or is the busy fuction not implemented?
    2)  If the LCD is set to trigger on high state, when one character is sent the entire display gets filled by it and besides, the busy check doesn't iterate even once(Is the simulated LCD so fast that it can process faster than the CPU? wierd)
I tried the same program in UMPS and it works fine. What can I do to make the LCD module work properly?

    Hello PCA,
I've been strugling with LCD for some times now. I will be very glad if you could show me what you did with the code, and connectiion.

  • Apparent port conflict using LCDS with JBoss

Hi,<br />I am somewhat new to this so please bear with me.  On my server I have lcds installed and sample.war working in JBoss 4.0.5.  I have written a datatier in Java against PostgreSQL 8.x and am writing simple mxml programs to test it.  I have had some success with this. All of the new code is installed in a copy of samples.war because I do not understand the configuration files well enough to toss the examples out.  My latest problem is that my recent versions of the war file get this error in my JBoss log file:<br />Exception in thread "RTMP-Server" <br />flex.messaging.endpoints.rtmp.RTMPException: The RTMP server has encountered a fatal exception starting up: Address already in use<br />     at flex.messaging.endpoints.rtmp.BaseNIORTMPServer.run(BaseNIORTMPServer.java:317)<br />     at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:595)<br />The port specified in the services-config.xml in my war is 2038, and I see JBoss also has an identical services-config.xml at:<br /> <jboss root>/server/default/flex/WEB-INF/flex.  <br />Has anyone else seen this?  Do I just need to change the port?  In both places?  Or is there something else I need to do?<br />Thanks!

    Robert,
Thanks for responding. Here is my Ant script, comments and all.

<!-- basedir. Hmm. we could actually put this Ant script IN THE ROOT of the sbda eclipse project, as it is mapped to svn.
Then we could have a separate script that checks out all of that stuff from svn, cd's to the root of the checked out
code, then runs Ant. In that case the basedir IS ".", because it is all run relative to wherever that checked out
code will lives. This also gets this script into ANT, which is a safe place for it.
So where does the 'first' script live? We have to use it before we check out from svn...
And what about the php code to handle uploads, sb_upload.php? For now that is separate, not directly in svn.
At least until we can get the eclipse for php to also use Subclipse.
Note: we also need to do a plain vanilla copy of the WEB-INF from basedir to the war dir. We do NOT wish
to create the WEB-INF from scratch!!

  • How to use LCD and Remote in PC mode

    Hi.
i wonder what programs i need to use the remote control and LCD in pc mode.
i have a mega 180 and this is my first time using it

To see CPU/SYS temps and CPU fan speed, to have to install and run PCAlertIV (the one from the CD bundled). However, lots of people has reported problems with that app. It eats a lot of CPU every 5 seconds. So... it's not recommended.
The remote works OK with MCIII but... it's veeery slow and its range is annoyningly short.

  • Projecting Ipad Using LCD Projector

I am in education. I would like to use an iPad in a classroom where i can have what is happening on the iPad screen be projected, using an LCD projector, without using another computer and preferably wirelessly. Can this be done?

As you describe it, only through an Apple TV connected to a projector.
If you can do without "wirelessly", you can do this (mirroring) through a cable connected to your projector.
On a limited basis, Epson just released an app that will send limited content (images, Word/Powerpoint/Keynote docs) to one of their own networked projectors.

  • Can I use LCD monitor with beige G3 233 mhz desktop?

    Dear all,
I have a beige G3 desktop and want to use an LCD monitor with it.
I work mostly in OS9, but browse and email in OS X 10.3.9.
My Mas has the original video card in it, the ATI 3D Rage II.
Could I use a 19 inch LCD monitor with my Mac? Or would it have to be a 17 inch one.
I read on here that the mac treats lcd monitors just like CRT monitors.
what is the maximum resolution and monitor screen size I could use with my Mac?
    Please help.
I only have a dinky 15 inch CRT monitor and would like a bigger monitor for Photoshop and animation work.
    thank you

    Both are probably contributing factors.
I know this will open up another can or worms, but you could consider overclocking your processor; most G3s will take a speed bump up a notch or two (266 or 300 in your case). It's relatively easy to do- search the forum for more info. As an alternative, a faster G3 chip (350-400) can be had rather cheaply from eBay (~$25). There are also a few 16MB Rage 128 cards on eBay, some as cheap as $10. Just make sure you get the Mac PCI version- AGP won't work. With the new video card and a speed bump, playing videos should be greatly improved. Just don't spend too much money on the old beast.

  • Implementing Server Push using LCDS 2.6

    Hi All,
We have created an application where we are using polling to get certain constant updates. Now this polling is client polling wherein the client polls the server at regular intervals to get the fresh data for certain actions.
Now we wish to take this to another level and implement Server Data Push so that the client does not keep polling unnecessarily and the server notifies the client as and when the data gets updated with the server. For this we have the DataService Transaction class that needs to be implemented.
But there are a couple of questions that are in my mind regarding this technology. It would be great if someone could answer them.
    My questions are:
    1) Does the LCDS server know which client to push data to in case of multiple clients looking at the same data scenario. e.g. Two clients A and B are looking at the same data. A performs an action and that action needs some time to get completed at the server. Now in case we use Server Data Push, will the LCDS be intelligent enough to send the message on completion of the requested activity to only A and not B.
    2) In order to push data to the client, the server will invoke some method which will return the desired data to te client. How do we keep the parameters registered with the server that this method would need while getting invoked. SInce, the call to the method will not be client initiated, how does the server know what parameters to be passed to the method in order to invoke it. How will this work in a multi-user looking at the same data/screen scenario.
The answers to these questions will really help us. In case anyone is well versed with this technology, please pitch in to give your inputs.
    Many Thanks.
    Regards,
    Shally

    Hi,
As also, suggested by you, we were thinking of using an RTMP channel only for this since its a two way socket that establishes a communication channel between the client and the server and then helps keep messages moving to and fro.
We have successfully implemented RTMP channel and achieved the following functionalities.
    1) A client initiated change which gets propagated to the server and then to all the clients.
    2) Server push to all the clients.
Now our last step is to implement data push to a particular client. As told by you, we will use the client id but we have some doubts and questions regarding this since we do not have the code examples or anything that could help us in implementing the same.
I would therefore request you to kindly lead us on the following fronts:
    1) Is the client id the one that is part of the request- response thread, I saw a client id being printed in the logs when a request is made and the response comes.

It would be great if you could provide us some code snippets just to give us an idea from where we can take it up ourselves.

  • Using LCD HDTV as a display Buyer Beware!

DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG TO USE WITH A MAC
I just purchased a G5 and wanted a screen larger (an less espensive) than what they sell at the apple store. I bought a 23" high def at Best Buy at the suggestion of the sales guy. The HDMI output to the PC does not work. There is a 1" border around the edge of the display where your pointer gets "lost" ( you cannot see the top and only a portion of the bottom bar) I went to return the monitor and Best Buy informed me that they would charge a restocking fee which I feel is very unfair as they were the ones that suggested the monitor. I highly recommend that you take your mac to your retailer (and I would stongly advise aginst Best Buy) to test the display before you purchase.
    Good luck all!

Composite Video (the yellow RCA-style jack) has NO provision for Audio. It is used in conjunction with Stereo Audio, generally supplied on two additional RCA jacks, Red for Right and White for left.
There are a number of non-interchangeable schemes that combine composite Video and Right and left Audio onto a multi-jack. The issue is which ring the Ground (for everything) is on -- that cannot be re-arranged easily. Your SONY TV may be using one of these:
    http://pinouts.ru/Home/avjackpinout.shtml
Clamshell iBooks use yet another different non-compatible pin assignment that puts the ground on 4, Video on 3, R_Audio on 2 and L_Audio on 1. That cable is often still available from Apple retail stores.
Sometimes you can get those signals to "play through" another device in your collection, such as a VCR that has the correct jacks.

  • New (used) LCD doesn't work!

    Hi all,
I have an old G4 with an ATY 128 RagePro card. I purchased an older 20" flatscreen (acrylic) from ebay thinking it was compatible. The apple comes up but then the screen goes black.
Is there anything I can do to make this work? Is it something I can do on my own? Please excuse me for not understanding a lot of the technical terms - I'm a full time student with 2 young kids and my current monitor is going FAST! Your help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Hi, again-
Did you try and push the monitor power button after it went black?
First, try and clear the PRAM.
To clear the PRAM. From system off, hold down Command-Option-P-R during startup but before "Welcome to Macintosh" appears. Hold the keys until you hear the second startup chime. Here's the explanation:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If that doesn't help, you can try resetting the PMU, via a little button, inside the computer, back by the little battery-
    Here's how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
If these still don't help, try starting up from your OS X install disc.( Insert disc into drive, start up holding the "c" key). If you have a screen while booted in the disc, you will need to reinstall your OS X, using "Archive and Install" from the installer.
After we figure out your monitor, it might also be wise to update your OS to 10.3.9. The download is here:

  • Bad display, use only external montior?

I recently acquired a PB Ti with a bad display. Further, both hinges were cracked off entirely so the screen was only attached by the wires. I'm heading out of town and wanted to get this machine set up for a friend to upgrade from their iMac G3. My thoughts were that i'd just cut the wires from the PB screen, thus removing it completely and attach an external montior.
Now, i only get a black screen on the monitor - no sign of life. The PB boots up fine (and when the display was attached it did support multiple displays) Is there a way to get around this? It seems as though the motherboard needs that electrical loop to know it has a display before it can send a signal to an external display. Anyone with experience please comment - thanks in advance!

You might try seeing if "closing the lid" on the TiBook will cause it to completely ignore the built-in display. I realize you can't close the lid since it is gone. But the way the TiBook thinks that there is a closed lid is through a magnetic sensor located under the trackpad. Depending on which model it is, the mag sensor is either to the left or right side of the trackpad. What I would try is this: Boot the Mac to a point where you are pretty sure the OS is running. Take a magnet off your fridge and slide it around slowly on the trackpad. At some point, the sleep light should come on meaning you have located the mag sensor. Now, try attaching an external display and waking the TiBook by plugging a USB mouse in. Make sure the TiBook's AC adapter is connected. Hopefully the external screen will now light as the primary screen and the missing lid will be ignored.
Another thing you might want to check, if you really did just cut the wires off, is that there aren't shorted out wires at the point where the cuts are. Sometimes on narrow pitch ribbon wire and other wire with closely spaced conductors, cutting through them will cause adjacent lines to short together. You might need a magnifying glass to check that and clean up the rough cut if necessary.
