Using 3G mobile as a modem

Hi,
I am trying to set up the configuration to use my mobile a Nokia as a modem for the mini. All the configuration/pairing is done. I can set files to the phone and vice versa but when I initiate a connection by cliking on the phone icone, it displays in the upper bar first something like "Connectiong ..." then switch to "Disconnection..." , and it shows the "disconnetion..." for ever after and I can't cancelled the request. Obviously, I can't establish a connection.
Same story using the cable, tell me my configuration is incorrect.
Any experience of such a problem ?

There appears to be a problem in Mac OS X 10.5 in requiring a certain type of PPP protocol not supported by all GSM providers.
I had the same problem you appear to be describing, trying to use a Nokia or Sony Ericsson mobile phone via bluetooth as an internet modem. After successful bluetooth pairing the mobile phone and the Mac, I can browse the mobile phone content from the Mac, but attempts to connect to the internet fail ("connecting - disconnecting"). This is the case from within the Network systems panel and using Novamedias launch2net software (Novamedia ought to know better!). The problem dos NOT lie with the mobile phone, as it works fine as a bluetooth modem from a Nokia N810 Linux internet tablet. So it's a Mac OS setting or modem script problem.
The solution for me was to tell Mac OS X not to require a particular form of PPP protocol.
Instructions on how to do that are here:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=421419
"I ran into exactly the same problem with Treo 750 and was able to solve it by following these steps:
1. Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
2. Find PPP entry for the Bluetooth connection (search for "Bluetooth-Modem")
3. Find "CCPEnabled" parameter that belongs to this entry and replace "1" with "0"
4. Save the file
5. Connect and enjoy.
Basically it looks like Leopard enforces MPPE encryption/compression now and it's not supported by many GSM providers. I wish they made this setting configurable via GUI..."
Thanks to Aleksey for posting this solution !

    Hi,
Listed below is the step by step intructions to configure the Nokia device as a modem to a mac.
    Steps:
Connecting your Mac to the internet is convenient and easy with your a compatible Nokia S60 device. You'll need a Nokia S60 device that supports a 2G or 3G data connection (such as GPRS or HSDPA), a compatible Mac (with the latest OS X), a USB cable for your Nokia device or a Bluetooth-enabled Mac, and a network subscription with your mobile service provider.
To set up your device you'll need to know your operator's Access Point Name (APN) and have the packet data service enabled. For help with this please contact your operator.
In Settings select and open Connection >Select and open Packet data > Select and open Access point >Type in your operator's Access Point Name
Exit Settings. Your device is now ready to be used as a modem for your Mac!
Bluetooth Connection: Pairing between Mac and Device using bluetooth, follow the instruction from here: http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-as-a-modem/connect-to-your...
Note: Preferred mode is USB as it much faster than Bluetooth.
Connect the device and then go to System preferences- >Network- >Select Device (Nokia XXX)
Click on Advanced Tab > Modem tab
    - Vendor : Nokia
    -Model:GPRS (GSM/3G)
-Telephone Number: *99***1# (contact your operator to get this settings)
-APN: airtelgprs.com (contact your operator to get this settings)
    CID: 1
Once connected it will be highlighted in green.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Cheers
    Sandy

  • Using Pre Plus as a modem with laptop

Can I use the Palm Pre Plus as a modem tethered to my laptop with VZ Access Manager software from Verizon.  I used this method before with my Blackberry Pearl ($15/mo).  I don't want to pay $40/mo to Verizon to use WiFi (Mobile hotspot) feature on Palm Pre Plus.
    Thanks

    Hi
Can someone help me understand this product please? I've been a BB user till now but want to switch over to the PPP:
    1. Can it be tethered to the laptop as a modem AND work as a phone at the SAME time?
    2. What are the high speed connectivity - do they compare with a broadband at home or the 3G USB modems/sticks one uses on the laptop? If so, are there any limits to the data usage?
    3. I am paying 60 dollars a month for the USB modem AND 70 dollars a month for the unlimited WW data capability on my BB. It appears with the PPP I can get both the things done in the 29 dollar plan for US? Or maybe the 70 dollar plan for unlimited WW usage that can be used on my laptop too with high speeds? AM I correct or reading too much into it here? I am with Verizon currently. Does anyone else offer anything better that takes care of both the things - high speed internet access on my laptop AND a US/Canadian voice plan (I have it currently for USD 99.95/Mo - 1350 minutes)
    4. Is the PPP constantly connected to the internet like the BB is for instantaneous emails? And are there any limits to the enterprise activation as they are on the BB of one only?
    5. Any better alternatives here from Palm?
    Many thanks folks!

  • Using Vodafone Mobile Direct HELP!

I have successfully installed and used Vodafone Mobile Direct (v2.06.05 the latest for mac) on my MacBook Pro, Using 10.4.9. This is connected via a Vodafone USB modem.
It would not load one day and I got the message:-
An exception of Nilobjectexception was not handled. The Application must shut down.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software but to no avail... I can only assume the package has altered the registers in some way because I would have thought that a complete removal and reinstall should have fixed it.
I previously ran this package on my Powerbook G4 and am now using this again and it is working Fine.
Can anyone help me here... I live in the country no mains electricity, no telephone line and this is my only form of communication.
    Thanks for your help

I think one thing an install would change, and an uninstall most likely won't revert... is the Ports & Order in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
So you might take a look there to see what's checked, and you can drag the Interface you want to use for Internet to the top of the list. Might try deleting vodaphone related ones and reboot, then reconnect the vodaphone.
Might try uninstalling vodaphone, then trashing...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkConfig.plist
And reboot & reinstall vodaphone, & setup Networking again... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • How do I use my 8300 as a modem for my laptop

    Hi all,
I'm new to this forum. This is my first post...
I'm trying to set up my 8300 smartphone to be used as a tethered modem for my laptop to be able to get the full internet content anywhere with in cell coverage.
    Question 1:
I got instructions from the 'BlackBerry HELP' icon on the phone (my question was: how do i use my device as a modem) which seemed very complete. The modem is dial-up and when I try to connect I get Error 718 (basically a timeout error).
    Can anyone help?
    Question 2:
Since this uses dial-up, would I be using my cell phone minutes?
    Thank you, Lar

    hello,
first thing is to look on the forum if people have already solved your issue. In this case, the tethering subject is quite frequent. You will certainly find your answer among these discussions :

  • Is there any way to enable rSAP, use the iPhone as a modem, create sms folders, and show the day's calender on the home screen?

    Hi folks
Had iPhone for a while and generally happy, but it seems I still need to keep my old nokia E72 because I cannot seem to use the iPhone as a modem, nor does it support rSAP.
Also, while I like the threaded sms view, I'd also like the option to create sms folders to stash away my banking sms info, all of which comes from different numbers, and filled the sms inbox with hundreds of messages.
Lastly, having the meeting for the day diplayed somewhere on the home screen would be great if there were a way to do it. Yes, I can go into calender easy enough, but unless I develop the habit of checking it all the time, I often forget about a meeting whereas on the old nokia, it was always displayed.
What gives with the lack of flash support? Maybe ol Steve dislikes adobe, but it seems like a serious lack to me. Even the old nokia has some flash support.
Given that, I must say I love the seperate calenders and contacts. It's great to be able to keep home contacts seperate from work ones, but still have them on the same phone. Email is great two - full html support seems like a given but it works really well.

rSAP has largely been supplanted by ABAP, which the iPhone supports. Most modern smartphones, including the iPhone do NOT store any information on the SIM.
SMS inboxes. Not much to say. I've never had a desire to do this. I understand it could be useful, but it's unlikely to change.
As for meetings on the home screen... Wait for iOS 5
Flash: it's not JUST that Steve doesn't like flash. Adobe has failed to produce a workable version of Flash for iOS. Blame has to go to both sides.  I say good riddance to it.

  • How do I only use the wifi internet because I don't want to use my mobile data because I don't have Internet on my price plan?

How do I only use the wifi internet because I don't want to use my mobile data because I don't have Internet on my price plan and its costing me money?

Well, if you are running iOS 6.0 or later.
The option supposed to be in Settings>General>Cellular>Cellular Data---Off & Enable 3G---Off
I think you'd better check the settings in Privacy>Location Services.
Some items in it need Cellular data like"setting time zone" and "Find my iPhone'.

  • Windows 8.1 laptop cannot connect to the internet using USB Mobile Broadband stick.

I bought a new laptop and it came with Windows 8.1 installed. Well, things worked perfectly until I wanted to connect to the internet using my mobile broadband USB stick. I installed the software that came with the stick, and my laptop recognize
the stick but I still cant connect to the internet. The stick workes perfect in my Windows 7 and Windows 8 laptops, but IT DONT CONNECT WITH MY WINDOWS 8.1 LAPTOP. What can I do to troubleshoot this???
HOPE I AM SPECIFIC ENOUGH THOU...

    The PC Repair Guy,
If you haven't already, verify that you can connect to the internet through some other means such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet with your laptop to rule out any network setting issues.  If you are able to connect successfully to the internet, use that opportunity
    to make sure you have
Windows 8.1 Update installed as well as any other applicable updates your laptop may require.
You may also want to check the
Windows Compatibility Center to make sure that your device is compatible with Windows 8.1.
Another possibility is that the driver your laptop is installing for the device isn't the correct one.  Check the device manufacturer's site for the most up to date driver they have available for Windows 8.1.
    Hope this helps!

  • Using a mobile program to interpret Archived media

    Hopefully i'll make this clear;
I'm developing a program in Java ME that will provide a variety of media to the mobile user. They will navigate by way of a map, which will have 'hotspots' on it. When a hotspot is activated, they will be able to view a variety of media, from text to images and small soundbytes.
The actual content will be written by scholars; my job is to create a program that allows them to write the content, and then drop it into the delivery system (also devised by me) and distribute it. The data itself may be changed, and as such, it must be possible to reload and edit the data.
What I had in mind to solve my dilemma was a program with a standard swing interface which allows the scholars to enter their data into the system. Then, what I wanted to do was to 'grab' a pre-prepared ME program, and then use the Jar editor in Java to enter my media into the Jar file. In theory, this will also allow me to compress some of the text, saving valuable space.
However, I'm not certain how to go about:
    1) Changing the Jar file. Will I also need to make changes to the Jad file? Will there be other changes?
    2) How to get my media (images, audio, text) into the program once this has been accomplished.
Also, are there any additional API's for Java ME that I could safely assume are on most Java capable phones? The base ME API's are a little bare to say the least.
Any and all assistance in this is very much appreciated.
    -Dave

    Hi,
    According to
Why can't I find or install an app from the Windows Store?
If you can’t install an app and are using a mobile connection, it may be because you are on a metered connection. By default, tethered and mobile broadband connections are metered, meaning you can be charged by the amount of data you use. To switch your
    connection to unmetered:
Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.)
Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Network, and then tap or click Connections.
Step 3: Tap or click the connection you want to change, and then, under Data usage, turn Set as a metered connection on or off.
If this method was no use, please feel free let me know.

    Hello friends
I recently updated my SE Xperia mini pro 17i (2011 model) to ICS, initially there were some issues and I had to re-update it to finally get authentic interface of ICS. Even after the successful update I am unable to use the mobile network to access Internet, the only way  is to use a Wifi instead. Can somebody please help me out with this issue?

The first thing I would advise doing is contacting your current network provider and have them send you through the relevant internet settings.
