Using 3gs in Mexico? Ayudame

I have an old unlocked (AT&T) 3gs. I'm going to be travelling in Mexico and wondered if I could use it?
I don't have so many calls to make, but data (maps) etc. would be awesome.
If so how do I get a sim? I'll only be at the airport and bus station in Mexico city. After that Taxco. There will probably be a place in the bus station, right? Can you get sims at Oxxo or only reload ones you already have?
I speak a little Spanish, but what are the words for sim, data plan, and other unusual words I might need?

So after a little more research it looks like to get a Mexican SIM it requires a CURP (their version of a social security number) or a pasport precented at a company store.
Has anybody done this? Is it fairly easy? Or should I not even try?

Best solution would be to give or sell it to someone in Mexico who can use it. You can do othing with it if it is locked o Mexican cell carrier.

According to Apple's latest info they do offer unlocking from their network

The iOS5 upgrade for the iphone allowed network operators to control the availability of the 'personal hotspot' feature. If your operator is one of those who charge extra for tethering (and most do) then by upgrading to ios5 you've facilitated them to remove the option for you.
Apple bowed to the demands of the opertators on this one.
I am with Tesco(O2) and as soon as I upgraded to ios5 I lost the 'personal hotspot' option.
I have the last laugh though; They cant control my Android phone so I put the Tesco mobile sim into that when I want to use tethering.
Get an Android phone or if you're in the UK use Three mobile who allow tethering.

Contact that carrier and ask if they offer this service and if you qualify

Purchasing an iPhone at the full retail sales price or non-contract price with a carrier at a non-Apple retail store in the U.S. does not equate to the iPhone being unlocked.
As already provided, the only place you can purchase a new iPhone as unlocked in the U.S. is at an Apple retail store or via Apple's online store.
