Using 667 RAM in new Mac Pro

Apple is replacing my defective first generation 2007 Mac Pro 8-core with the currently shipping model. My old 8-core has 16 GB of 667 Mhz DRAM. Apple wants me to use this slower RAM in the new 2009 machine, which uses 800 Mhz DRAM. Is this OK? Will this work, just making my machine slightly slower.
Thanks.

Depending on how memory intensive the work you do is, the reduction would be noticeable if you had a basis for comparison. But you will not likely notice any difference since the machine's performance will pretty much mimic your old one, more or less.

    Supported GPU technologies (Mac):
    - AMD/nVidia OpenCL for direct link in MacOS 10.8.5 and higher
    - OpenGL for SG native
    Supported GPU technologies (Win):
    - AMD OpenCL, nVidia Cuda for direct link in Win7,Win8, Win8.1
    - OpenGL for SG native
Note: Although SG not utilises two GPU's, it should run fine on your new Mac Pro and use OpenCL for acceleration

  • Web browsers crashing and using up RAM on new Macbook Pro

    Hey everyone,
Recently I bought a Mid 2014 Macbook Pro to replace my old 2011 model that was destroyed by liquid damage. Though I like this new computer, I seem to always have an issue with it running low on memory, ESPECIALLY when using web browsers such as Firefox and Safari. Quite often I will be waiting for a URL to load or will try to scroll through a webpage when the browser will freeze and crash. I've been keeping more of an eye on how much of my 8GBs RAM is being used at any current moment, and typically it is ranging from 2 GBs free to around only 30 MBs free as run applications such as Pages, Firefox, and/or Safari. These issues have been preventing me from using software such as Photoshop and Avid Media Composer because I keep wondering if the computer can even handle such memory intensive software if it cannot handle web browsers. Also when a browser crashes, I never seem to get a crash report and typically have to Force Quit the software.
It seems extremely odd that my computer is constantly running into these issues. My last model had less RAM, yet I never seemed to have an issue with memory or crashing. Part of me is wondering if I have an application somewhere that is consuming too much, or if I accidentally imported some broken files/applications from my previous computer, or whether it is either the web browser's software or the computer itself.
    Below are my specs:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)
    Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C109)
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB
Media Name:    APPLE SSD SD0128F Media     Size:    120.47 GB (120,473,067,520 bytes)
Software i typically am running for work:
    Safari Version 8.0.3 (10600.3.18)
    Firefox 36.0.1
    Pages 5.5.2
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • New Mac Pro: What are You using to connect your eSATA external drives to you nMacPro?

    Hi,
I have some eSATA external HDs that I would like to use with my 2013 New Mac Pro.
I was just wondering what other  have been using to connect their nMPs to eSATA devices and how well it has worked.  I have seen a USB3 to eSATA cable from NewEgg.... which seems like a good idea ... if it will work.
    Thanks!

LaCie TB HUB has two TB ports which is good for daisy chain. Has two esata ports also. I connect a Voyager bought from OWC to one sata port and that's where my bare 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives reside when I need them. The other sta port has a Pioneer 207 blu ray drive. When I sleep my 2013 Mac Pro I turn off the power to the Voyager and the Pioneer. All work flawlessly.

  • White lines appear on videos since my new Mac Pro - Why?

    Hello,
    I'm the happy owner of a Mac Pro 2,7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5 / 64 gig RAM / 2X AMD FirePro D700 6144 Mo running on OS X 10.9.3 (13D65).
I'm using CC latest version but also Red Giant Magic Bullet LOOKS to color grade my videos (on an adjustment layer). I have 3 HDD (1 SSD in the computer with the programs + 1 external (Thunderbold) G-RAID for cache files + 1 external Pegasus R6 2 (Thunderbolt 2) for the footage).
Sometimes, when reading (but more often when exporting in Media Encoder) white lines appear on the video (see image below). Why?
Is that a Premiere problem? Is something going wrong with my Mac? I have already reinstalled everything from scratch but the problem remains...
I was working with the same programs on my previous iMac and I didn't have this problem.
    Any idea ?

Is it an Adobe or a Mac Pro 2013 related problem? Does everyone using the GPU acceleration have the same problem?
So far, it appears to be an issue with OS X 10.9.2 and up.  Some folks that are beta testing 10.9.4 have reported that the strange artifacts no longer appear while using Hardware mode, but a few folks are still having Premiere crashes with it.  My suspicion is that we're seeing two separate problems with Premiere on the new Mac Pro when using Hardware mode: 1) artifacts, lines, etc on exports and 2) application crashes.  Neither of these appear to happen when Pr and AME are put into Software mode.  Given the commonality of the problems (using GPUs on the new Mac Pro) some folks seem to think they're directly related.  My gut tells me they aren't.
The challenge for the folks at Adobe and other third party app developers is that the boys (and girls) in Cupertino are changing things within OS X a bit too quickly, for better, for worse.  Some of these changes are what I call "ninja patches" where they don't really explain what they're changing or why.  I strongly suspect that's what's going on here.  They sneaked something into OS X 10.9.2 and haven't un-sneaked it yet.  Folks are strongly encouraging Adobe to address this issue pronto, but if Cupertino keeps altering the guts of the OS, how can they?

  • Allocating RAM in Leopard on new Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro (early 2008) with Mac OS 10.5.1 and Photoshop CS3 10.0.1.
I just installed 8-GB of RAM (which shows up in About This Mac).
In Photoshop > Preferences > Performance, the dialog box says under Memory Usage...
    Available RAM: 3072 MB
    Ideal Range: 1689-2211 MB
Let Photoshop Use: 2764 MB (90%) - [which I have manually set so far]
    My questions...
    (1) Why is Available RAM not closer to the 8-GB I have installed? Available RAM based on what? If I had 32-GB installed would this still show Available RAM 3072? I thought Photoshop could be assigned 4-GB?
    (2) Ideal Range based on what?
    Thanks.

    >What Allen said. Above 3GB installed PS CS3 will use memory for scratch which speeds things up. I have mine set at 94% after some testing.
I have it up to 100% and that makes it fly with Forced VM Buffering plug in installed 9 GB of RAM and a internal stripe RAID made up of two of the four internal hard disk It is also equally important to have fast hard drives. The newer hard drives with 32MB cache are much faster than the older models. Use those to make a raid and see what happens.

  • "Best" configuration for new Mac Pro used for Aperture?

I'm getting ready to order a new Mac Pro and would like to configure it to optimize Aperture performance.
On CPUs - I have found no benchmarks which show whether Aperture would benefit from 2 quad core processors versus 1. Does anyone know of any benchmarks or have any experience using a single quad core? I don't want to spend $500 on a 2nd processor if Aperture can't use it.
On Graphics cards - I was sold on the GForce 8800, due to it's supposed blazing speed for gaming and it's larger on board memory. However, after reading the following review http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html , these guys seem to imply that applications such as Aperture actually run faster with the standard Radeon 2600 video card! If anyone has any experience or opinions on this review, I'd love to hear them!
On memory - I know from experience that Aperture will use all of the physical memory you make available to it. I plan on ordering the standard 2GB from Apple, then adding 8GB from 3rd party for total of 10MB.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can only say that when faced with the same decision last month, I went with a 2.8 8-core/8800GT/10gb RAM/library stored on 2nd internal drive setup and am completely satisfied with Aperture's speed. Beyond satisfied, really, borderline thrilled to be honest. No beach balls, perfectly responsive adjustment sliders, smooth and quick scrolling through images (even with Quick Preview mode turned off). Aperture 2 definitely takes advantage of all 8 cores - I have MenuMeters installed and can watch its CPU usage across all 8 cores. Exporting, for example, is fast and uses all cores for background processing.
I have seen a couple small anomalies though...when moving photos around in a light table, I get some odd flashing artifacts on the right side of screen that could be graphics card related. Visually annoying but it doesn't affect performance. I'm also seeing some weird behavior with keywords not appearing in Tooltips and in the Viewer, but it's intermittent and is most likely a software bug and not my hardware setup.

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D

Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Hi, I'm using the new Mac Pro
    2.7 GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    OSX 10.9.2
    I'm using After Effects 12.2.1.5
When I attempt to invoke the race trace 3D renderer in a comp, I get this error
"After Effects Error: Ray-traced 3D: Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer. Your project may exceed GPU limits. Try closing other applications. Try updating the CUDA driver. (5070::2)"
My preferences are set to use the CPU for Raytraced 3D since I do not have an Nvidia card.
So, obviously there is an issue here in that it thinks I have an Nvidia card.
I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
So my question is, what files can I delete/reset to cause After Effects to no longer look for CUDA files that do not exist on this machine?
I do not have the CUDA control panel in System Prefs, so THAT did not carry over.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

    > I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
Ugh. That causes so many problems.
The first thing to try is deleting the CUDA frameworks from your Mac: Look in /Library/Frameworks for the CUDA.Framework and get rid of it.

  • I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and have been trying to back it up on my Time Capsule for the first time.  However, it says there is no available disk space. This time capsule was used with my old Mac Pro that had a Home vault open on it.

The time capsule was used with my prior Mac Pro laptop that unfortunately had the home vault active on it.
My new Mac Book Pro does not have home vault open.  But I am unable to back up my new MAC pro laptop because it says there is not enough storage space available.  Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
When I go into the time capsule - it shows me NOTHING as being in the backup datas.  So, I don't know where to begin to delete all the old data off the
time Capsule and start with a completely empty machine.

Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!
