Using 8 cores in Log & Transfer

Is there any way to set up Final Cut Pro 6 to be using all 8 cores of a MacPro when doing Log & Transfer operations? I.e. R3D to ProRes or P2 MXF to Quicktime.
Last I checked L&T only distributed across 1 core -- Compressor was needed to use all 8. Has anything changed?

At the moment I'm converting a large amount of AVC-Intra footage from P2 cards to ProRes on a Mac Pro. FCP's current CPU usage hovers around 525% in the Activity Monitor. It's evenly split among the 8 cores. At the bottom of the window, I'm seeing 30% of the CPU idle. I didn't do anything special to set that up. I don't know how well FCP currently uses the CPUs on other L&T jobs.

  • Using AVC Intra for Log & Transfer

    Just checking,
Can you use the AVC Inra setting in Log & Transfer for XDCAM instead of AVCHD and if so what is the difference the two settings?
    Jeff

    Hi Thrillcat,
The reason I asked this question is I was told that when importing XDCAM ftg I should use the AVCHD setting in Log & Transfer . I just noticed the AVC-Intra setting and thought this was a new flavor of AVC and thought I might use this as well for my XDCAM import.
    Could you set me straight?
    Thanks

  • Log & transfer issues from Canon 5D

    Hey,
There's some footage shot on a Canon 5D (in H.264 format), I want to use FCP 7's log & transfer feature to convert to apple pro res.  However the files are greyed out and unable to click on them. Equally as unsuccessful, I can't drag them from finder on to the log & transfer window.
The files haven't been moved since copying the data from cards (which they are no longer on) so unsure as to why they are not importing. I have tried from both an external hard drive and from a server but can't access them via FCP 7.
I can view them in preview, but not in Quicktime if this helps anyone find the root of the problem

Download  and install the free  'EOS Movie Plugin E1 for FCPV1.2'
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_ ii#DriversAndSoftware
Use the Log and Transfer to import H.264 footage form the camera or the card directly into FCP, you will have the options in the import window setting to decide what type of ProRes to convert to. Works like a charm..

  • After I used the migration tool to transfer contents of my previous MacBook Pro I cannot log in to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried using old and new passwords but to no effect. I cannot use my Apple ID. How can I re-set my MBook to factory setting pls?

I have been a proud owner of Apple products for many years. However, this problem is very frustrating! Any help will be appreciated. I used the migration tool to transfer the contents of my old MacBook Pro to my new shiny MacBook Pro Retina! After migration finished I tried to access my new MacBook Pro retina. However, when asking me to log in it refuses to accept the passwords from either the new MacBook or the old one! I do not have the option of using my Apple ID either.... Please help! Unfortunately, I am past my 90 day Apple Support!!

Restart holding down the CMD+R keys, launch Disk Utility and erase the HD, quit DU, and restore the OS. On first boot, use the Setup Assistant to do the migration. Details in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

I want to transfer the recently purchased songs onto my iPod so how can I do this now? iTunes now says that I have to wait another 55 days! There must be a way to do this since I have paid for them.

In iTunes sign out of your daughters Apple ID and sign in with your own.

  • "clips queued-idle" error using log&transfer in FCP7

Hi, I shoot HDV on a Sony Z5 and now want to use a Sony memory recording unit (HVR-MRC1) instead of tapes.
Today I ran some tests and the first time all went well: I connected the HVR-MRC1 with a firewire cable, opened log&transfer in FCP 7 and no problem importing all the files (after downloading a plugin).
But then I deleted all the files and recorded some new clips. Once I tried to import those in FCP, using log & transfer I could only import 7 of the 9 clips. Of the 2 clips it didn't want to import it said "clips queued - idle".
Also, I realised that none of the clips I shot could be previewed and I couldn'y choose an in- and outpoint before importing. I could only import the whole clip.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me with this. I'm looking forward to working tapeless, but I need to be 100% sure that I'll have access to all my footage.
    Many thanks in advance!

First thing, I always copy the material to a local hard drive before doing the log and transfer.  Make sure you copy the containing folder from the camera.  If you change the folder structure, fcp will not be able to access the material.
What settings did you shoot with.  FCP is not compatible with certain formats.  If you have access to Premiere, you may be able to convert the files to an fcp friendly format.
    Good luck.

  • Missing clips when using log & transfer

    Hi everyone,
I use a canon vixia hf m41, when I use log & transfer it works fine except some clips are missing!  There are less clips in the log and transfer window then there are in the stream folder..........

I tried this again last night with a slightly different result.  This time, all .m4v files were copied as .mov files to the Event folder, but no clips were created in iMovie.  I then tried dragging the .mov files from the Event folder to the Event in iMovie, but I received the following error:
"The files will not be imported.  They are not compatible with iMovie."
So, the .mov files that iMovie itself created are not compatible with iMovie.
I also verified that there are no non-Apple codecs in the Library\Quicktime folder per this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/9755974#9755974
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Using Log&Transfer with QuickTime files?

Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? I have been given a drive with .mts files converted to quicktime. The file names are utterly meaningless. Example: I have 30 QT's with duplicate names in different folders, from different shooting days. Obviously I need to relog everything, give it scene/take info. Wondering if I can use Log & Transfer to log the QT files?
The footage was shot 1080p, should I just bring in the .mts files thru log&transfer, ProRes?
Suggestions and guidance very much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply -
The .mov files are Apple ProRes 422(HQ).
As mentioned earlier I also have the original .mts files. Everything was shot AVCHD 1080p.
Short of slogging through thousands of incorrectly labeled .mov files I was thinking of just starting fresh with Log & Capture of the original .mts files.
One of the reasons I'm thinking of working with the .mts files and Log & Capture is that I can rename the clips while retaining the metadata of the original .mts files. My understanding is that this will preserve the link between the 'work print' and the camera original 'negative' so to speak. It will also afford me the easy ability to work in ProRes proxy and uprez later, tho I assume I can bring in the 'mov as proxy and do the same thing?
I've been known to be totally wrong and thus, I am here seeking wisdom.

  • Mac OS 10.5.5 or QT 7.5.5 breaks P2 ingestion w/log & transfer

    The title says it all.
I just upgraded a Mac Pro 2.8 dual quad-core with Mac OS 10.5.5 and QT 7.5.5. Everything worked spiffy before. Having been around the block several times, I performed all the usual routine maintenance stuff before the upgrade -- repairing permissions, etc.
Now, the machine will not ingest P2 media using the Log & Transfer function on FCS 6.0.4. I can still view, select, trim, rename -- but I can't ingest the clips. When one adds the selections to the queue, the program starts the process. The status window in the log & transfer function shows a spinning wheel as normal, but when the process is finished, the wheel freezes. An exclamation point then pops up. It's like the program has captured it, but then doesn't "build the file." FCS is not completing the process, in any case.
I wish Apple's left hand would tell the right one what it's doing!

We updated to 10.5.5 for security reasons and bugfixes, not so much because of a "compelling workflow change." In our opinion, 10.5 really wasn't ready at all for "prime time" when it was first released. Maybe we didn't have to upgrade to QT 7.5.5; but over the years we've found that QT upgrades tend to be more stable when system software point upgrades are done at the same time.
To answer your other question -- we don't tend to do complete HD backups, simply because they're a PITA. Sure, we've got the external drives to do it; we just don't have the time in many instances. I'm not saying we never do them.
Our digital video experience goes back to the Mac IIfx, the bad old days of Truevision Targa boards, and Premiere 1.0, so we tend to rely on our brains and our wits to get out of hardware and software issues. In this case, we still had the P2 clips, and if needed, could have ingested them on a different machine (fortunately we were not on a time-critical deadline). Call it hubris if you like, but our approach to troubleshooting works okay for us.
In our shop we have several machines to shoulder the work, and can afford to use one to test things before upgrading the lot of them. This was the case in this instance.

  • Lost Log & Transfer information

    searched forums but didn't find:
Was logging clips in Log & Transfer from firewire drive. Had dragged many clips to queue to batch with the intention of actually importing them on another machine. I saved my project, and was hitting appleS every 5 clips or so. FCP quit unexpectedly (its never expected) and when I reopened the clips were gone. Tried restoring; no help. Tried two different auto-save projects; no help.
Again, hadn't done anything except log a lot of clips and place them in the queue. Can ANYONE help me recover them, or are they gone in the ether? BTW, have been on hold with Applecare for almost 1/2 an hour.
Should have done it on an Avid...
    Thanks in advance.
    D

Thanks, David. I was hoping that comment would be taken in the spirit in which it was intended. Obviously, I'm using FCP for the right reasons. Just don't know it very well, yet. Hence my mistake:
I talked to a tech at apple care who told me that when using "Log & Transfer" (NOT Log & Capture) you do not record any of the metadata until you actually transfer the clips. In other words, you can't add a bunch of clips to the queue and come back later and transfer them. If you close FCP without running the transfer you lose all clip information that you've collected.
In this instance I was logging clips from a LaCie external drive loaded with P2 media, attached to the MacBook via firewire.
So the bottom line is that I wasn't using the software correctly, which is 99 times out of 100 the case with problems like these.
Appreciate the help, and pardon the sloppy posting, but I was trying to get my client back up and running. So, for future reference, I'll include it.

  • Log & Transfer of Canon HF 11: error message

    Hi guys,
I just got a new canon HF 11 (basically the same as the HF 10) and i tried to import footage using Log & Transfer but every time I click "add clip to queue" it spins a grey icon for a few seconds which then turns to a red circle with an exclamation mark inside and says "Error: No Data". I have tried giving the clip an in and out mark but this doesn't help.
    Any ideas,
    Thanks

I have had a similar problem with my Canon HG21 which has both hard disk and 32GB flash drive. My method is to copy files from the Hard Disk to the flash drive and then place the flash drive into a card reader. I was able to see FCE downloading in log and transfer for a second or two and then it went into an idle mode and never downloaded the file.
My solution was to delete ALL from from the flash drive followed by copying the videos and stills from the hard disk onto the clean flash drive. I realize you don't have the luxury of the hard disk, but perhaps you can extract the files using the Voltiac tool to clone the Canon structure from the camera and see if log and transfer will work directly from your hard disk on the Mac.

  • Log & Transfer with Mac OS 10.6.2

Having previously had a fully working, and it has to be said impressive, installation of FCE 4.0.1 I attempted to ingest some new footage recently. I had not used FCE for about 3 months as I had no need to.
FCE started up great and I was able to create a new project as well; but when I opened the Log & Transfer window and attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card, nothing. The folder name does not appear as the source at the top of the window and no files appear in the top list pane.
Now to troubleshoot here's my line of thought:-
    1. The latest footage is corrupt.
    2. The system has changed since Iast used FCE. (This is true and I will come to this soon)
    3. The FCE install is corrupted.
So here's what I've done to address each of the above steps.
    1. I returned to the last footage I'd successfully ingested and I could not add that footage's folder to the L&T window either, as a precaution I then trashed the preferences and tried again, still no good.
    2. As stated above my system has changed as since the last time I used FCE I've upgraded to Mac OS 10.6 and subsequently 10.6.2 also I've installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0. So to troubleshoot this I needed a test bed and so used a spare internal SATA drive as a new Startup Drive and performed the following.
    i. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    ii. Installed Mac OS 10.5.
iii. Patched 10.5 with three iterations of Software Update.
    iv. Installed FCE 4.0.
    v. Patched FCE to 4.0.1.
vi. Tested FCE and it worked perfectly, interesting but not the solution I would like.
vii. Installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
viii. Updated Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
ix. Upgraded Mac OS to 10.6 and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
    x. Patched Mac OS to 10.6.2 with three more iterations of Software Update and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
Ok a short pause in the overly detailed breakdown of what has occurred (I don't want anybody to be in any doubt as to my veracity in troubleshooting).
So as far as the above sequence is concerned Mac OS 10.6.x does not support FCE and AVCHD media, as an added 'feature' after two attempts at adding a path to the footage FCE crashes completely.
Maybe a 'clean' clean install is what is needed.
xi. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) again.
xii. Installed Mac OS 10.6 and patched with three iterations of Software Update.
xiii. Installed FCE 4.0 and patched with Software Update to 4.0.1.
xiv. Tested FCE and it still will not add a path to any media and crashes after a handful of attempts at getting it to do so.
So the third of possible causes i.e. FCE install corrupted is excluded as cause 2 Mac OS problems are the culprit.
Am I the only person with a professional spec (albeit a little long in the tooth, yet very capable) machine; built with the latest OS as per manufacturers recommendations; FCE software installed as per best practice and the media stored on a dedicated drive in the AVHCD file structure (as a footnote the software will not "see" the camera either) who is unable to use FCE as it will not do what it says on the tin. Unless the tin is 10.5.
Spleen vented is anybody able to help?

Impressive - you've been very methodical & thorough - I wish most posts were as thoroughly detailed as yours! But something else is going on. I have FCE 4.0.1 on 10.6.2 and it's working perfectly; ditto for a lot of other people here.
You mentioned that you +"attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card"+ - have you tried Log&Transfer directly from your camcorder? If not, try that and let us know what happens (or not).
When you copied that folder from your SD card, did you copy the +entire folder structure+ (all the way from the root of the SD card) or just the folder containing the video? That could be the problem (you need the entire folder structure for AVCHD video, not just the folder containing the MTS files.) What camcorder are you using?

hi, you should not do nothing with user root.
please, don't use root again for weblogic administration.
list all files with root permissions:
move to Middleware Home, example: cd /u01/app/oracle/Middleware
    find . -user root
if there are files with root permissions, change it to oracle:oinstall
    I saw this:
    Could not load Logmanager "oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager"
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager
Please check in DOMAIN_HOME/bin/setDomainEnv.sh file if exist this:
    JAVA_OPTIONS="-Djava.util.logging.manager=oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager ${JAVA_OPTIONS}"
    export JAVA_OPTIONS
    MWCONFIG_CLASSPATH=${FMWCONFIG_CLASSPATH}${CLASSPATHSEP}${COMMON_COMPONENTS_HOME}/modules/oracle.odl_11.1.1/ojdl.jar
    export FMWCONFIG_CLASSPATH
    if exist, replace for:
    JAVA_OPTIONS="${JAVA_OPTIONS}"
    export JAVA_OPTIONS
if not existe, its necesary for you to use /prosun/jasper/org.apache.commons.logging_1.0.4.jar in your classpath?. If it isn't necesary delete it, and restart the AdminServer.

  • Error message on MXF Log & Transfer

Haven't had this one before. I have another post running asking for assistance in converting MXF P2 card files to MOV without using FCP. I thought I should also post for help on the original problem.
I take in a lot of video shot on P2 cards for editing. I received files recently shot on the Panasonic HPX300. Started up FCP 7.0.3 (I won't upgrade to the balky newer version) and started the Log & Transfer as I have done countless times without an issue.
There is over 500GB of material here. MOST of it came in and then once put in the queue was converted and placed in it's proper place in the bins. However, a number of files did not transfer and this is the error message on each one:
"m" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
    Checked a few things:
    - The files and folders were not renamed.
    - I tried the files both from the original hard drive they were downloaded onto and another external of my own I placed copies on.
    - I do not have the original cards. These files were sent to me by the photog.
    - Here's the poser. When FCP starts and L&T is selected, and I chose the proper drive with the folders, the files show up in the upper area before being moved into the queue. When there, I can click on a file and see the video playing properly in the preview window to the left. No problem.
But when I move that video file to the queue for transfer, the problem files will reach about a third and then the error message. So I KNOW the files are there and they are playing back, but I cannot get them to transfer.
There is no rhyme or reason as to which ones fail. They come from the same folders, same contents, yet some will transfer and others will not.
Help is greatly appreciated on this one. THank you.
